MATCH GEAR GUIDE 2011 | 2012 This is the ﬁrst Match Gear Guide ever produced by Shimano and features the very latest tackle suitable for the UK match angler. Take a look through the pages and you’ll soon see exactly what we mean. With a wide range of rods, poles, reels and accessories available, there is now something for all match anglers or those who ﬁsh like them. And don’t think that it’s only exclusive top-of-the-range tackle either. Shimano understand the needs of all anglers, which is why a lot of our tackle represents outstanding value for money and affordability.

DESIGNED IN THE UK FOR UK ANGLERS Although Shimano is one of the largest tackle companies in the World, we realise the need to develop tackle speciďŹ cally for certain markets. This is why a lot of the tackle in this brochure has been designed in the UK by some of the best match anglers available. There are several examples of this. The Commercial rod range has been especially designed for UK match anglers fishing modern methods on commercial waters. The new GEN X and GEN Z poles are designed to cope with strong elastics without the need to use heavy power kits. This is a direct result of the change in modern match fishing where fish are getting bigger and poles need to be stronger. The Super Ultegra and Commercial luggage ranges are also designed for UK match anglers, especially those who use barrows and carry made-up rods. Finally all Shimano 3000 sized reels come with shallow spools suitable for match anglers using between 4lb and 8lb reel lines.

DRAG SYSTEMS FRONT DRAG

As you would expect from one of the World’s leading reel manufacturers, there are many innovative and outstanding features on a Shimano reel. A glossary of the reel features, the technology and the beneﬁts they deliver is explained on this page.

GEARING S A-RB BALL BEARINGS The secret of long-term high performance is to prevent any form of rust, corrosion or oxidisation of the bearings. This can cause a reduction in the reels performance over time. S A-RB Bearings have extra shielding for improved protection against grit, sand or dust.

ROLLER BEARING Shimano is the only company to produce its own roller bearings. This piece of fine engineering holds the main shaft and provides an excellent infinite anti-reverse performance, essential when playing powerful fish of the drag. A Shimano roller bearing delivers a performance equivalent to 3-4 ball bearings.

The new generation AR-C Spool has a chamfered lip. This results in longer and more accurate casts with less effort, making distance feeder fishing or casting tight to islands easier.

In the last couple of years front drag systems have become more popular with match anglers. The reason is simple - carp! Shimano front drags have multiple discs which produce a low inertia start and consistently smooth performance. Providing you set your drag correctly, a Shimano front drag can be trusted to compensate for powerful runs and close to the net lunges.

AERO WRAP II

REAR DRAG / FIGHTIN’ DRAG

For a line lay second-to-none, you don’t need to look any further than Shimano Aero Wrap II line lay system. Using advanced engineering and super smooth oscillation systems we can create line lay with extremely close parallel coils resulting in smoother and improved casting distance.

Rear drag reels are still hugely popular and thanks to Shimano’s exclusive roller bearing, which reduces friction and holds the main drive shaft securely, making them almost as efficient as front drags. One big advantage of rear drags is you can change the spool without changing the drag setting. Another is Fightin’ Drag which is fitted to our mid and upper priced reels. This enables you to slacken or tighten the drag easily whilst playing a fish.

CASTING AND LINE LAY AR-C SPOOL

VARISPEED Varispeed produces exceptional line lay for long casting performance. Using two special gears (one of which is square!), Varispeed lays the line on the spool in a way that prevents it bedding in when playing hard fighting fish.

POWER ROLLER The special design of the Shimano Power Roller significantly reduces friction and line twist during the retrieve and when playing fish off the drag. The result is smoother casts with more consistency and less wear on the line.

P4 CONCEPT P4 REELS Shimano P4 stands for Power, Precision, Performance and Pleasure and combines uncompromising quality with mid-priced affordability. You won’t find better performance or quality in this price bracket anywhere. < The stunning Rarenium offers reduced weight compared to similar sized models. This improves the balance of short rods, and its low inertia multi-disc front drag makes it the perfect reel for top ﬂight match ﬁshing.

THE ULTRA LIGHT REEL FOR MODERN MATCH ANGLERS Built using Shimano’s exclusive Ci4 composite material, the Rarenium is 30% lighter than similar sized models. This provides better balance for short modern match and feeder rods.

RARENIUM Ci4 FA If ever a reel was designed for the UK match angler Rarenium is it. Built using Shimano’s exclusive ultra light Ci4 material, as soon as you pick one up you’ll immediately feel the difference - the 3000 model weighs just 200g (that’s about 30% lighter than most of it’s competitors!). The benefit of this becomes apparent when you combine the Rarenium with modern match rods, especially models designed for match carp waters. Pellet waggler and short feeder rods immediately feel better balanced and more responsive.

TECHNICAL DATA However there’s more to Rarenium than just a lack of weight. With 6 ball bearings, plus a roller bearing, the Rarenium has all of the smoothness and power you’d expect from a Shimano. This power, combined with the low inertia multi-disc front drag, makes fi sh playing easier, quicker and safer, especially when using through actioned rods like the Speedmaster and Beastmaster Commercial ranges. TWINPOWER FC Built with a lightweight body made from aluminium and XT7, the Twin Power has lower gear ratios than many other match reels (2500 and 3000 - 5.1:1. 4000 and 5000 - 4.8:1). AS GOOD TODAY AS IT’S ALWAYS BEEN Stradic is one of the most popular Shimano match reels. The balanced double handle, quick gear ratio and faultless front drag combine to produce a stunning high performance reel.

STRADIC FC Stradic has been around for years and has stood the test of time. The latest FD model continues the Stradic reputation with a traditionally fast retrieve ratio (2500 and 3000 - 6.0:1. 4000 and 5000 - 5.8:1), a feature that many match anglers prefer. Another well liked feature is the double handle (2500, 3000, 4000 models), which balances the reel perfectly and produces smooth performance when working at top speed. In fact for float fi shing the Stradic 2500 and shallow spooled 3000 really take some beating. As with all Shimano front drags, the advanced low inertia multi-disc drag makes fi sh-playing much more efficient, especially when using lighter hooklengths between 0.10mm and 0.13mm for carp. This range also features a compact bodied 5000 size which comes with a longer single handle making it excellent for feeder fi shing at range.

SHALLOW SPOOLS The 3000 sized Shimano reels are supplied with shallow spools. Shallow spools have enough line capacity for the most common match lines right up to 10lb for commercial carp waters without the need to use excessive backing.

The Super GTM-RC is a fast retrieve version of the Super GT. Available in 2500, 3000 and 4000 sizes, the fast performance makes it perfect for float or long range fi shing where speed equals more time fi shing and less time winding! To provide the required smoothness at high speed the Super GTM is fitted with 3 ball bearings, a roller bearing and a double handle for optimum balance.

ULTEGRA Ci4 XS-A | XS-B For anglers wanting extreme distance casting feeder reels the two Ultegra XS models are the ones to look at. Taken from our carp range the 4500 and 5500 sizes are compact ‘Big Pit’ reels (the sizes don’t conform to our normal match reel sizes) which have become popular with top match anglers in the know! Essentially both models perform the same functions, the major difference being the Ultegra Ci4 XS-A is a new model with an ultra light Ci4 body. This extra lightness enables even greater rod speed to be achieved when casting, giving increased distance.

TECHNICAL DATA The Ultegra XS-B has one less ball bearing, plus a roller bearing and an XT-7 body. Both models feature AR-C spool, 2 speed oscillation and Aero Wrap II for stunning line lay, which enables the line to fly off the spool with minimal resistance. When fi shing at extreme range you need a reel that can eat up line on the retrieve and both Ultegra models, in both sizes, retrieve over a metre of line per turn on the handle. CARBON TYPES

ACTIONS

Shimano has access to many types of different carbon grades, resins and technical manufacturing processes which combine to produce outstanding rods at all prices. You will see next to the specification boxes an ‘XT’ figure which denotes the quality of the carbon. The larger the figure, the higher quality and more costly the carbon (XT100 is better than XT40). To make exceptional rods we blend different grades of carbon together to produce the right combination of lightness, stiffness and strength. We also have different resins and manufacturing processes which can improve rods. Biofibre provides additional strength in top and mid prices models whilst Geofibre is used for our entry level models to produce similar results. Our latest technological advancement is HPC (High Pressure Carbon). This eliminates weak spots and increases strength by evenly distributing the resin during processing and is now being used on top of the range products.

Developing the correct rod action is essential and we take great care to produce the correct action profi le. Ultimately, rods have to have correct fi sh-playing actions to give you the best chance of success and maximum enjoyment. We also understand the need for lightness and casting performance in certain models and always work on fi nding the right compromise.

REEL SEATS Your Shimano rod will have either a custom designed Shimano reel seat or a branded Fuji reel seat. Whichever you chose you can be sure that our reel seats ensure the reel is firmly connected to the rod and won’t fail you.

GUIDES The type of guides used on a rod have a direct result on its action. At Shimano we select the best guides for the rods use, considering lightness, profi le, strength and positioning.

SPEEDMASTER COMMERCIAL Speedmaster Commercial is new for this year and offers the serious UK match angler the best rods possible for modern match fishing methods. There are three different styles of rod, each designed with a specific use in mind Pellet Wagglers, Feeders and Light Float. All make use of our exclusive HPC (High Pressure Carbon) manufacturing process. This not only eliminates weak spots, it also means we can use less material in the rods and still retain the strength required. The result of this is a range of rods that are light, slim and perfectly balanced with an almost elastic fish-playing action. The Pellet rods come in two versions, a multilength 9’-11’ (great for short work) and a more powerful 11’ 6” for open water. CATANA FEEDER The Catana feeder rods have been built around a high performance XT40 Geofibre blank, which maximises power and compression when casting, yet retains the sensitivity to handle big fi sh safely, even on light lines. There are nine models in the range, ranging from a traditional 11’ Light through to an unusual Long Range 16’-17’ model. This extra length version can cast phenomenal distances and was designed for the continent but does have some applications on larger UK waters. Star of this range is the versatile 12’ Medium which can handle feeders up to 3oz in open water situations, Method feeders on commercials or block end feeders on medium sized rivers for chub. Shimano’s Vengeance Feeder range offers a great combination of performance, strength and quality all for well under £100.00 Built on XT30 blanks with added Geofibre for strength, the Vengeance has a classy part cork part EVA handle, fitted with a Shimano screw down hood reel seat and Hardlite guides. There are four traditional models (Light, Medium, Heavy and Continental Heavy) plus two remarkably good telescopic models, and a versatile 12’ Multi Match - which is a feeder and float rod combination with a feeder top section and a float top section. All models have good fi sh-playing actions suitable for carp fi shing on commercials, and the added Biofibre gives a robust characteristic suitable for catching large weights quickly.

GEN X TOP KITS

The GEN X Concept was the result of over three years intense research into the perfect design taper for a pole so that it can be fished at its full 16m length more easily. The result is a series which offers the perfect combination between stiffness, balance, weight and low diameter. The Aspire Ultra, Fire Blood and Super Ultegra are all produced on the GEN X mandrel, meaning that sections will interchange and a large range of affordable generic spares are available to fit each pole. The design of the match top 3’s incorporates a very short, large bore number 1 section. This can be elasticated with up to a number 8 elastic without any cutting back. For heavier elastics up to 20, and all hollow elastics, you can remove the number 1 section and fit a large internal bush directly into the number 2 section. Because the number 1 section is short, it means that you keep the maximum length possible whether you’re fishing light or extra heavy elastic. Also within GEN X is a full range of top kits in 3, 4 and 5 section options. These come in four different grades - Pro, Plus, All Round and EV to enable you to tailor you pole to suit your preference. A cupping kit (exactly the same length as a top 3 kit), half extensions and a generic parallel extension are also available.

GEN Z is a more cost effective version of GEN X and follows the same principles. GEN Z can be found on our new Carp Cruncher, Exage and Technium poles. GEN Z kits are available in top 3, 4, and 5 section options in two grades - All Round and EV. There is also a matching cupping kit that is exactly the same length as a top 3 kit.

When fi shing at lengths up to 11.5 metres, the benefits of a lower diameter pole are obvious, and that’s what you get with the Exage Slim. TECHNIUM MATCH

AERO SUPER MATCH

Technium Match uses the Shimano Invisitec triple construction process and has a light burgundy coloured core. With an excellent strength to diameter ratio, and class leading abrasion resistance to take the knocks of feeder fi shing, this sinking line has only 12% stretch (normal mono has up to 25%), and is perfect for increased bite detection when feeder fi shing.

Aero Super Match is Shimano’s newest line and one that is set to get heads turning. Stronger than other lines in its class, the new Aero Super Match is a tough line that can take the knocks of constant casting and fi sh-playing in big weight situations. It’s also supple, casts well and has a semi-translucent dark colour that looks and feels great. Finally, it’s one of the best value mono’s available in the UK.
