CoreSolid Series - CoreSolid is the name for spinning reels with the characteristics of high rigidity and high power.

XT-7 - XT-7 is the original SHIMANO composite reel material, used on reel bodies and spools. XT-7 is reliable, robust and lightweight.

Reel Size - Spinning reels are available in various sizes: 500, 750, 1000, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 - and beyond. The number indicates the line capacity: a 1000 sized spool contains less line than a 3000 sized spool. However, the bigger the line capacity of the reel, the bigger all the other components of the reel are as well. So in total, a size 3000 reel is bigger than a size 1000. The right size of the reel for a fisherman depends strongly on the rod used (length, casting weight), the way of fishing and personal preference.

Magnesium - Magnesium is used by SHIMANO for a select number of ultra high quality reels where weight saving is essential. The use of magnesium offers a weight reduction up to 10% compared to aluminium and can cope with both lightweight and high rigidity.

HAGANE Gear - The HAGANE Drive Gear is produced by SHIMANO’s cold forging technology, without the need for additional machining. This results in gearing parts which retain the characteristics of the pure material, keeping it as strong as possible.

LUGGAGE

Gear Ratio - The Gear Ratio of the reel indicates the speed of the reel. This is showed in a number which includes the amount of turns of the rotor (360 degrees) in one full rotation of the handle. Example: In a reel with a gear ratio of 6.0:1 the rotor rotates exactly 6.0 times in one handle rotation. A reel with a high gear ratio (HG or XG) is faster, which is an advantage when you need a fast retrieve speed. A reel with a low gear ratio is slower and because of that more powerful. A low gear ratio is an advantage when heavy bait / lead / lures are used, a high gear ration is an advantage when speed is required. Spool Capacity - The spool capacity indicates how much line can be spooled on the reel spool. This is often communicated in line diameter (mm) – meters and line strength (lb) – yards.

LINE

Maximum Drag Force - The maximum drag force is a number in kg / lb, which shows the maximum tension of the drag. For example, when the maximum drag force of a reel is 6kg, 6 kilogram or more of pressure needed before the drag starts to give line when it is fully closed. Line Retrieve per Crank - The ‘Line retrieve per crank / handle turn’ specification explains how much line is retrieved in one full crank with the reel handle. This is measured in centimetres. This indicates the retrieving speed of the reel. A fast retrieving reel is often wanted by lure anglers, because they can retrieve their lure very quickly. Generally: the bigger the spool size, the more line retrieved per crank. The same goes for the gear ratio: the faster the gearing (a higher gear ratio) means more line retrieved per crank when compared to a reel with a lower gearing.

Cold Forged Aluminium - Cold Forging means forging aluminium at a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius. Very heavy pressure is used to forge the aluminium or magnesium into it’s shape and this technology results in super strong and rigid reel parts. The commercial name of this technology which is used by SHIMANO is HAGANE.

SHIMANO BALLBEARING TECHNOLOGY (S) A-RB - Shielded Stainless Steel Anti-Rust Bearings. These bearings have undergone a special heat treatment resulting in high metal strength. Shielded A-RB bearings use either a rubber shield or stainless steel shield (depending on bearing size) for the ultimate in corrosion resistance and contaminant protection against sand, salt or dust.

Micro Module Gear II - a further advanced through state-of-the-art, gear tooth surface design and SHIMANO’s exclusive manufacturing technology. The surface of the drive gear and pinion gear have been analysed and updated from the ground up in pursuit of perfection. Starting from an already industry leading standard, reduced reel noise and even smoother gear feeling have been realised. X-SHIP - X-SHIP stands for Extra Smooth & High Power. It is a precision gearing system which enables smooth yet strong reeling. By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings and integrating a bigger drive gear with improved position, SHIMANO have increased the gearing efficiency and power of reels with the X-SHIP feature. It results in a reel with ultra-light handle rotation which is very powerful at the same time. G-Free Body - G-Free Body technology has been developed to shift the reel’s center of gravity closer to the rod. This has been achieved by moving the oscillation mechanism more towards the top of the reel. By moving the centre of gravity closer to the angler’s hand position, the G-Free Body helps to reduce fatigue and enhance casting comfort. SilentDrive - SilentDrive is a total redesign of 11 internal components with the result of reducing microscopic handle play eliminating noise and unnatural feeling from the worm shaft. The combination of the redesigned components and extremely fine tolerence engineering produces silent and super smooth reeling, even when under pressure.

SHIMANO SPOOL TECHNOLOGIES AR-C Spool - AR-C is a spool-lip design technology by SHIMANO. Through tens of thousands of casting tests and computer simulations, it has been determined that the AR-C spool lip design provides longer casting distances than a standard spool lip design, while preventing backlashes and wind knots. It also allows the line to flow off the spool in smaller loops during the cast which means less line slap on the first guide.

Long Stroke Spool - Increases the casting distance by 4% - 17%. This feature can be found on the new Stradic FL (figures are based on the FL and it’s predecessor, the Stradic FK).

SHIMANO BODY TECHNOLOGIES HAGANE Body - A reel with HAGANE Body has a body made out of precision machined cold-forged aluminium or magnesium. The creates stiffness and impact resistance, why at the same time eliminating flexing of the body. The HAGANE Body is highly rigid and protects gear rotation performance from heavy loads and shocks.

X-Tough Drag - X-Tough Drag incorporates large diameter drag washers at the base of the spool, which provide greater drag stability. The result is smooth and consistent drag performance throughout the fight. The Coil Wave Spring features steady elasticity at any compression level, and little deformation under repeated compression.

X-Protect - X-Protect is a three-lipped rubber seal system which is designed to keep low pressure water out of the reel. The grease between the second and third lips resists high pressure water. Besides the rubber seals, a labyrinth construction is added in order to make it waterproof for a much longer time. All of this does not effect the smooth rotor rotation or line roller performance.

Aero Wrap II - Aero Wrap II is a worm gear oscillation system with a specially designed pitch to create optimal oscillation speeds for the AR-C spool design. The one speed oscillation system provides a line lay with one speed (the same speed upwards and downwards). The two-speed oscillation system (the spool moves upward quickly and downwards slowly) layers the line onto the spool in a precise criss-cross pattern that reduces line-to-line friction when casting.

HeatSink Drag - HeatSink drag improves performance by transferring heat away from the spool, reducing spool surface temperature by up to 100 degrees. Rigid Support Drag - When hooking a large fish, the smoothness of the initial movement of the drag is the most important to avoid line break. By supporting the spool with the main shaft and two bearing links in the spool, it is possible to suppress the spoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flutter and to provide stable and smooth drag performance. Cross Carbon Drag - This carbon drag material provides a wider range of drag settings, along with the smoothest SHIMANO drag performance ever.

X-Shield - By placing sealing gaskets in 12 critical locations throughout the rigid aluminium body, SHIMANO is able to create a water resistant structure that can hold up against the toughest conditions. CoreProtect - CoreProtect is a SHIMANO technology which is developed to keep water out of the reel, without creating a heavier rotation feeling. This innovation is used in three areas of the reel:

One Piece Bail - One Piece Bail is a bail made of one piece of material, which allows the line to slide very smoothly over the bail to the line roller. Its seamless design reduces friction and reduces the chance of tangles or cuts to the bail arm.

1 The Drag Area. This is the most critical area when comes to balancing water resistance without affecting the light and smooth rotation of the reel. A surface protection coating causes water to bead. This beading action prevents water from flowing into the small crevices. 2 The Body Area: To protect the body, CoreProtect utilizes a series of 12 different seals and a flat body joint with surface treatment. The anti-reverse switch has also been removed from the body. 3 The Line Roller: A line roller with CoreProtect has a sealed one-piece design that provides water resistance and low maintenance. The sealed design does not require oil as part of regular maintenance.

SPIRAL X CORE is the newest and most advanced SHIMANO blank construction. The patented SPIRAL X construction is further enhanced by the appliance of high-strength carbon infinity tape with Nanoalloy® resin technology. Compared to SPIRAL X the torsional and structural rigidity of SPIRAL X CORE is improved by 10-15%. Nanoalloy® technology is a registered trademark of Toray.

SPIRAL X construction consists of three layers: a blank made of vertical fibers, an inner layer, and an outer layer both comprised of carbon tape that tightly winds the blank diagonally in opposite directions. By using this carbon tape in place of a conventional horizontal fibre sheet, Spiral X achieves enhanced torsional rigidity without adding extra weight. This in turn facilitates instant power transmission for precise casting and fighting fish. LUGGAGE

BLANK CONSTRUCTION Many SHIMANO rods make use of exclusive carbon technology to achieve lighter, stronger, more responsive rods. This delivers improved performance, which leads to more enjoyment, and ultimately more fish.

In HI-POWER X construction, the blank’s outermost layer is diagonally wrapped with carbon tape, which forms an array of “X” shapes. The width of the tape, its winding angle and the part of the rod being wrapped are fine-tuned according to the target fish species. The flexibility allows SHIMANO to adjust these wraps during construction for precise actions, enhanced overall strength and added twist resistance.

The main blank construction technologies are Spiral X Core, Spiral X and Hi-Power X construction.

NANO NANO is a multiple carbon sheet construction using nano resin distribution technology to ensure all layers of carbon sheet are uniformly bonded together. The result is increased overall rod strength and weight reduction of the blank. LURES

MUSCLE CARBON is a high-performance material that reduces the gaps between fibers by bundling carbon fibers at a higher density than ordinary carbon materials, and reduces the resin that fills the gaps. ROD PROCESSES / MATERIALS XT CARBON SHIMANO HIGH PRESSURE CARBON is a process which creates stronger, more responsive blanks. Pressure is applied to the blank surface during curing (heating) which evenly distributes the resin through the carbon fibre matrix. The result is a much stronger, more consistent performance and improved response.

XT CARBON is used throughout the SHIMANO rod range. The number following the XT (XT100), denotes the quality of carbon fibre used. The higher the number, the stronger the blank. Where different types of carbon are combined to create the required action both numbers will be shown (XT60/40).

With the NANO PITCH manufacturing method SHIMANO is able to wrap a molding tape which is used in the process of baking on a blank finely and with high precision. Because of the NANO PITCH method blanks are tightened up to the extreme while at the same time more uniform pressure is applied, the circularity becomes higher and it contributes greatly to overall rod strength.

Traditionally, solid carbon tips are made by forming carbon fibre cloth into a solid cylindrical carbon fibre bar, which is then ground to a tapered profile to make the tip. Because the fibres in the carbon cloth are multi-directional they become damaged during the surface grinding process which can weaken the final tip and give inconsistent results. SHIMANO TAFTEC tips utilise a pre-stretched T-3500 directional yarn fibre with low resin saturation. This directional alignment of the fibres results in much less damage during the grinding process and results is a spineless construction which tests have shown to be much stronger, lower in weight, faster in action and more sensitive. TAFTEC tips are used throughout the SHIMANO rod range where sensitivity is an important requirement of the the rod.
