Welcome to Donsö! Organizing a new type of event has proven to be both challenging and rewarding. The commitment and motivation that the shipping community on Donsö has shown in the process is truly amazing. There are no such thing as ”Impossible” or ”Maybe” when discussing the outlines with the shipowners. Either we do it or we don´t. Combining an exhibition with pre-booked meetings and seminars has to our knowledge never been done before so the outcome is very exciting. From day one our vision with the event has been to combine quality with numbers, e.g have lots of meetings with the right people. 350 persons from 122 companies from Scandinavia, Finland, The UK and The Netherlands are participating, more than 3 000 meetings will be held. It gives us great pleasure to welcome you all to Donsö for two really productive days. Lars Adrians, Shipgaz Patric Westdahl, Swedish Marine Technology Forum.
The shipping island of Donsö Most of the vessels in the Donsö fleet never visit their homeport. The ships are, with some exceptions, way too big to fit into the harbour. About ten shipping companies have their head offices here – many of them being large actors in the sector of product and chemical tankers. The island of Donsö, in the southern part of the Göteborg archipelago, is unique. Nowhere else in the world are so many shipping companies gathered in one place. The shipping companies together employ more than 800 persons around the world. The island itself has 1 400 inhabitants. A great part of the transports of oil products in the northwestern part of Europe – in the segment of 5–20 000 dwt – are made by vessels from Donsö. Shipping has for centuries been an
important business for the inhabitants of Donsö, together with fishing and smallscale farming. Some hundred years ago the vessels were small and sailed with fish and other things that were to be sold in Göteborg. There are also documents found sho-
”The island itself has 1 400 inhabitants” wing that local shipowners sailed their vessels from Donsö to Denmark and Germany as early as in the 1500th century. Modern shipping history of Donsö started with oil about 100 years ago. A new market was created when the fishing vessels
were equipped with engines and needed regular refills of fuel. Some of the shipowners from Donsö started to sail to Göteborg where they bought barrels of fuel, which they brought back home and sold. The journey Göteborg–Donsö took about seven hours. Then, one day, someone got the idea to install tanks in his vessel – and the first bunker vessel was born. Many of today’s shipping companies of Donsö have their roots in these old bunker companies. Today, the tanker fleet of Donsö consists of around 50 vessels. About ten shipping companies have their head offices on the island and a few others are originally from Donsö although their head offices are now situated somewhere else. When you arrive in the harbour of Donsö – after a 30 minutes journey by ferry from Göteborg – you are met by a supermarket, some restaurants and loads of bicy-
cles and carrier transporters. White houses and a line of red boathouses. White sailing boats lie in the harbour and outside the supermarket is a note about a concert that has already been held. At a first quick look around, it seems like almost every house on Donsö have a shipping company’s sign outside. Looking more carefully you will discover, however, that this is not exactly true. Many shipping offices are situated in the harbour. The shipping companies of Donsö are with a few exceptions owned by families. The management often consists of father and son, or sons, cousins and other family members. It was earlier a matter of course for the young generation to continue with the family business. This is not the case today, although it is still quite common. Several chief executive officers on Donsö have said that recruiting new seafarers might be a future problem. Finding them as well as keeping them. Being an attractive employer is important. The company mana-
gements talk about thinking long-term and finding the potential seafarers early. – We take on board many apprentices in our ships. During the last two years we have doubled the number of apprentices, and in summer we fill the ships with deckhands in order to make young people interested in working at sea, one chief executive officer says. Since the shipping companies of Donsö are rivals to each other, you might think that they are not the best of friends. But nothing could be more wrong. Donsö is known for having a special spirit amongst the companies, the so called “Donsöan-
dan”. It has been said about the shipowners that when someone takes delivery of a new vessel, all the others are as happy as he is. By cooperating in things like education and delivery of equipment, the shipping companies get advantages that they would otherwise not have got. – One of our strengths on Donsö is that we discuss things. We talk about management, suppliers, regulations and vetting – but we never talk about cargo or money, one chief executive officer says. Despite ”Donsöandan”, there is of course some competition between the companies even on Donsö. The shipowners themselves describe this competition as inspiring and good for the safety at sea in general. As mentioned earlier, when a shipowner takes delivery of a newbuilding everyone is happy and come to congratulate him. But afterwards, back in their own offices, they all start to think of how to make their next ship even better. Klara Magnusson
Suppliers and customers meet at the Donsö Fair More than 350 persons from the shipping cluster of Northern Europe will visit Donsö during two days in September. Seminars and speedmeetings are on the programme. The idea was born during informal discussions between the shipowners of Donsö. What if an exhibition could be arranged, where suppliers and customers from the shipping industry could meet! And what if this event could be arranged on the island of Donsö! Tryggve Möller, Managing Director of Tärntank Ship Management AB, was the one who first came up with the idea. After a discussion with the other shipowners of Donsö they contacted the market depart-
ment of Shipgaz. This was in September 2008. - One of the reasons why this idea came
”Here we could meet all these suppliers at the same time” up is that so many suppliers want to visit us on Donsö, says Jonas Backman, Managing Director of Sirius Rederi AB.
Sometimes these suppliers arrive unannounced, and since the shipowners on Donsö know that it takes a while to reach the island, they often feel that they have to welcome the suppliers even if the timing is bad. - We felt that we then couldn’t always meet them professionally, and so the idea came up that it would be great to have an event where we could meet all these suppliers at the same time, Jonas Backman says. Lars Adrians, Marketing Director of Shipgaz, liked the idea of a fair on Donsö when he heard about it. Together with Patric Westdahl from Swedish Marine Technology Forum Lars Adrians has created an event that focus on relations between supplier and customer. - The companies attending the fair will
get pre-booked meetings instead of having to wait for people to, hopefully, visit their exhibition stands. This is a unique way for, for example, a supplier to get perhaps 15 customer meetings in only one and a half day, he says. The concept is similar to speed-meetings. All visitors get a list of the participating companies and people, and from this list they choose with whom they want to prebook a meeting. This is made in advance. When the exhibition starts everyone get their personal schedule with their prebooked meetings. A meeting lasts for 20 minutes. Lars Adrians believes that the managing directors of the shipping companies will be fully booked during the event. - Inspectors and chief engineers will also be popular, I think. We have decided that this fair will focus upon operative personnel – those who will actually use the spare parts or other equipment that the supplier offers, he says. According to Lars Höglund, Managing Director of Furetank Rederi AB, the onboard personnel has great influence on what to be bought and used on board their vessel. - The crew has a great opportunity to influence on wich equipment to buy. But it is of course also a matter of money, he says. All the shipping companies of Donsö will send some of their onboard crew to take part in the fair. From Furetank eight masters, chiefs and first mates are coming.
The other companies are sending all between three and 16 persons. The importance of creating relations seems to be well understood in the shipping cluster of Northern Europe. More than 120 companies will visit the fair; 70 of
”The fair on Donsö is not planned to be an one-timeonly event.” them bringing their own exhibition stands and the rest coming only for the meetings and seminars. In total, around 350 persons will participate. Lars Adrians is content, as is the group of Donsö shipowners that has taken part in planning the fair. The fair attracts not only shipowners from Donsö and their subcontractors. Several companies from for example The Netherlands and Norway are to be seen on the list of participants. Among the shipping companies are names as Stena Oil, Laurin and BRP. The fishing industry will also be represented. Apart from the pre-booked meetings and a dinner for all participants on Monday
evening, six seminars will be held during the fair. Five of them are open for all visitors. The sixth is only for the shipping companies and is related to competence development. Participants in this seminar, held by the Swedish Club, can include this in their education. The fair on Donsö is not planned to be an one-time-only event. – If it succeeds – and we think it will – this fair will be a recurrent event. Not every year but maybe every second year, Jonas Backman says. Lars Adrians agrees. – A fair with this concept have not been done in shipping before, he says. Klara Magnusson
The fair will be held in the new sports hall. All the shipping companies on Donsö have taken part in sponsoring the hall that was opened last autumn. By arranging the fair they support the sports club Donsö IS. Part of the receipts from the fair will be donated to the club and its work. The fair is arranged by Shipgaz together with Swedish Marine Technology Forum. The shipping companies of Donsö take part as host companies. This means that masters, chief engineers and first mates from their own fleets will participate in the fair.

WÄRTSILÄ SENITEC. FOR A HEALTHY OCEAN. Life demands clean water. Effective and secure treatment of bilge water from ships is a clear necessity for a healthy ocean environment. The Wärtsilä Senitec M Series oily water treatment units guarantee a resulting oil content in the treated water of below 5 ppm. Real case measurements show this figure to be even lower during normal operation. The Wärtsilä Senitec units are certified according to IMO MPEC 107(49) and US Coast Guard US 46 CFR §162.050.
