PROPOSED APPROACH WAY

PHASE 1 : UNDERSTANDING THE SITE CONDITIONS FLOOD PLAINS

The farmhouse is situated on the banks of river Mahi, Prathampura. The idea for the development was an MAHI RIVER FLOOD PLAINS ecological appraisal of the entire plot Existing Site Section: with the immediate surroundings. To check and understand: - can ≈ 92 m SLOPE ANALYSIS a degraded, eroded and unstable ≈ 98 m piece of land be revived to create its own eco- system?

SOIL & VEGETATI

≈ 104 m

•The scope included- applying and evaluating the principles of contour bunding, cut & fill exercise ,water retention & harvesting techniques, agricultural techniques.

≈ 107 m

•Creating a usable land from the ravines which are un-stable and shifting in nature.

ALIVE & HOW!

REJUVENATION, 03 LAKE Vadodara, India PROJECT FILE: Area: 20,050 sq m Client : Vadodara government Project type: Lake rejuvenation Project commencement: 2015 Project completion : 2016

The Ciy of Vadodara used to be the home of around 35 lakes ,many of which are now kept derelict, empty and used as garbage disposal areas.

Map of Vadodara showing the rivers and lakes

The government of Vadodara has taken up the initiative to ecologically rejuvenate all of the lakes, the Manjalpur lake being the first one in order to ensure that the lakes are always filled with water. The primary aim was to clean the lake and the inlets of all the debris and then rejuvenate it. Vishwamitri river, a minor river, passes through the city and another minor river Jambuva flows from the south-east of the city to join Vishwamitri further southwards. There are many watercourses called “Kaans which form the main storm water drainage for the city. The storm water from the entire city drains into a few of the major kaans, which drains into the river. Thus the network of the two rivers and kaans forms the storm water drainage system for Vadodara.

Existing Site

UNDERSTANDING THE SITE CONDITIONS The lakes of Vadodara were originally the part of drainage system of the two rivers, Vishwamitri and Jambuva. The lake in concern has been divided into three parts due to development around it. Sadly, two parts are completely filled up and no longer receive water. The third , is a depression with wild vegetation growing in it and being used as a dump site for garbage. The slopes and the contours of the neighbouring area were studiied in order to form a design for the lake.

DELINEATING THE REGION BOUNDARY Extents of natural resources and impacts of the human imprint often go beyond political or administrative boundaries. Hence, physiographic factors may become the premise governing extents for landscape regional planning. Study region is the origin of tributaries, which drains into the river basin of Banas and Sulki. The entire region is a granitic intrusion with highest peak at 1600 m. This influences climate and rainfall of this region. The average rainfall that Mt. Abu region receives is 1600mm, while that of surrounding region is only 650 mm. Dams in the foothills of Mt. Abu becomes important natural resources, which further affects the settlements pattern, which has come up in the foothills. Hence influence of these natural resources were taken into consideration while defining the regional boundary. Mount Abu has a humid subtropical climate classified under Köppen-Geiger climate classification as Cfa also known as Cwa. A zone of subtropical climate is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild winters. Under the Köppen climate definition, this category of climate type covers a broad range of attributes, especially in terms of winter temperatures. The average annual temperature at Mount Abu is 20.08 °C. About 1554.2 mm of precipitation is received annually. The driest months are April and December with 2.6mm and 2.4mm average rainfall. Imagining a Nursery as an Urban Park

This project explores the possibility of designing a nursery as an urban park whose operations and practices become the main structuring system of the new landscape. Situated in the heart of the city of Vadodara, Gujarat, the site is adjacent to the most popular public park of the city - Sayaji Baug and also to the Vishwamitri River. The proposed design is a journey between the existing and newly designed landscapes - like weaving a network of connections across the park, river and beyond; a design that will integrate the context of the site and the uniqueness of local conditions, some of which are abused, derelict and altered. The connections of the existing park with the new landscape start and end with the existing trees. The site is a home to around 98 exotic and native species of trees. These provide an opportunity for the creation of an arboretum and a part of the nursery. An urban park and a plant nursery has been looked at as one unit in which a user will get the opportunity to see how a plant is grown as well as experience the feel, smell and habit of the plant once it grows fully. The design will showcase the plants as saplings, young, fully grown as well as in permanent garden spaces that can be looked at and experienced before buying them.

VADODARA

VISHWAMITRI RIVER SITE SAYAJI BAUG The only green open spaces left in the city are along the River Vishwamitri. The site mainly constitutes a number of such scattered open spaces around the river. Terrain: Flat with gentle sloping towards River Vishwamitri. Soil: Fertile alluvial soil and coarse deep loam. Climate: Dry and Wet tropical. Average Rainfall: 93 cm Area of site: 170 acres SITE GOOGLE IMAGE

Vegetation: Invasive species along the length of the river.

32

The site is flanked by Maharaja Sayajirao University on its West, and residences on the other 3 sides. River Vishwamitri cuts right through the site, along the existing garden. The Bhukhi and Bharucharaja tributaries of the main river meet it beyond the boundary of the existing park. A number of illegal settlements have been demolished along the river leaving barren open spaces that have been incorporated in the design. The Master plan of the city too has these spaces marked as green spaces.

FORM OF THE RIVE

EXISTING TREES ON SITE

A 25-km-long stretch of the river passes through the city on a curvilinear path. However, most of these curvatures of the river are cut and the river flow has been diverted into a straight, fast flow as a flood control measure. The slope of the river is very gradual and because of the alluvial soil, the river shows a number of meanders. The soil is fine, loamy, mixed calcareous which supports vegetation. The river forms a number of landforms throughout the city. Many sections of the river have deeper gauge section with high banks.

The garden has been planted with 98 species of native as well as exotic species of trees. Many of the trees being planted since the beginning of the park are more than a century old and provide the required aesthetics as well as serve as a habitat for a number of animals and birds.
