Sold - Tom Price holds its second successful auction

Twenty four lots went under the hammer recently and were bought at a great price.

The second stage of an auction held in Tom Price recently helped reinforce the strong demand for residential land with 22 single lots and a duplex block sold at a great price during the one-day sale. On March 19, 24 residential lots went under the hammer. Single lots sold from $190,000 to $235,000 and a duplex block was bought for $330,000. Prices were comparable with results from the first auction held in February, which were indicative of the strong demand for land in Tom Price. President Greg Musgrave said he was particularly pleased by four of the town’s longest established businesses purchasing properties. Fortescue Metals Group (FMG), in particular,

bought five lots to build accommodation for staff based in Tom Price, as construction at FMG’s planned Solomon Hub iron ore mine, just 80 kilometres from Tom Price, gears up. Just recently, FMG was given the initial tick of approval from the State’s environmental watchdog for the $US3.2 billion expansion of its Pilbara iron ore operations. The first stage of the Solomon Hub will have a workforce of almost 1,500 during the construction phase and an operations workforce of more than 1,500 - when the 60 million tonne per annum (Mtpa) mine starts exporting iron ore in 2013. Musgrave said it was encouraging to see FMG heavily invest in the town, which symbolised the start of a long-standing relationship between the two parties. “Andrew Forrest and FMG are here to stay and as their Solomon’s and Western Hub mines (a third rail hub) progress so will the extent of their local investment” Musgrave went on to say how the decision “reflected the nature of past discussions with Forrest because he had always been a strong believer in local economies and investment” “The land sales are a new beginning for the Shire of Ashburton particularly Tom Price . Both Tom Price and Paraburdoo will be revitalised along with other significant projects to improve the liveability of our biggest inland towns. This is what it’s all about; to provide residents with choices and a place to call home” “The future looks very bright just like the super full moon a few nights ago” Musgrave said. The subdivision was developed by the Shire of Ashburton in recognition of the shortage of accommodation available in Tom Price for residents and local businesses. The lots will be fully serviced and include underground power, water, sewer and Telstra connections. The sales were handled by LJ Hooker Karratha with the assistance of Perth-based auctioneer, Jason Whiteman.

Shire President Report Pannawonica sitting on many committees over many years. He has continued his community spirit by putting his hand up to sit on Council and represent the views of the town. Well done and congratulations Cr Wright. On another note, it’s generally common knowledge that our Shire possesses some of the State’s prized nature-based tourism assets and research shows that tourism within our Shire generates around $40 to $50 million in direct visitor expenditure. It’s for this reason Council formally adopted a Tourism Strategy signaling a strong commitment to developing and growing our local tourism products and industry. The strategy commits the Shire to some 47 recommendations and from the outset we need to allocate over $300k over the next five years. And this community support was evident after Cr Wright has been a long-serving resident of the Shire sold 45 residential and six light industrial

allotments in Tom Price during a two stage auction. It was encouraging to witness long-standing local businesses and individuals making substantial investments to secure industrial and residential land and a sustainable future to boot. Moreover Fortescue Metals Group’s purchasing of several residential allotments signals a strong commitment to our town. In essence the Shire made history (after selling land to private residents and businesses alike ) as this type of real estate activity has never been seen in a place like Tom Price. We’ve created a genuine real estate market in a town commonly known as a mining town. Private investment and development is critical in securing the future of any small town. Tom Price has been a mining town for over 40 years and now it’s changing (as local businesses believe in their future). They’ve made their intentions pretty clear they’re here for the long haul. Congratulations to everybody who took part in making history in Tom Price and the Shire of Ashburton.

Understanding Aboriginal Trusts benefits to three of the Lanuage Groups/Tribes in the Pilbara – the Banyjima, Nyiyapali and Innawonga people (“the Traditional Owners”). While the terms of the LUA are commercial-inconfidence, a charitable trust called the General Gumala Foundation was established to deliver the benefits of the LUA. Having our own Charity provides the safeguards needed to ensure we invest and spend the money in accordance with our mandate – poverty alleviation. This necessarily requires us to be prudent in where we invest the income derived from the LUA and prevents us from entering into speculative or risky investments that may adversely affect the interests of the current and future generations of Traditional Owners. There is what is termed a “fiduciary” responsibility or “duty of care” that requires us to act in a prudent and proper manner. Serious legal consequences can eventuate if people in positions My last story on Land Use Agreements (LUAs) of trust and responsibility act contrary to their generated much interest from the community fidiciary duties. multi-million dollar capital works program is in the pipeline to build 150 houses throughout the Pilbara – a massive social and developmental challenge! In seeking to become the leading indigenous corporation in Australia, Gumala has been working within an ambitious growth plan that recognises the centrality of self-determination while exploring partnerships with government and of course working closely with our special partner; Rio Tinto Iron Ore. The charitable nature of our work does not diminish our self-determination and willingness to identify and pursue opportunities that are consistent with the cultural norms and traditions of those we serve. Indeed, the fact that we are a charity provides us with another layer of protection while not preventing us from improving the living standards and quality of life for the Traditional Owners.

My pictures don’t do me any justice as I am even more gorgeous and fair than my photo suggests. I have a very expressive face with understanding and intelligent eyes. I have a slim, tall stature with a short stumpy tail. Although I would like to be the only one in your heart and home I also love the company of other dogs so if I am adopted and have canine brothers or sisters I would be excited too. My

favorite way to bond is walks and spending time in the countryside. I’m still maturing with time and I do chew like most dogs in my age group but I want to grow up an obedient little lady so I would appreciate and benefit from dog training. Because of my size and breed my ideal place would be a home with a large yard or property to spend my time with the people I love. I’m looking forward to meeting you and becoming a part of your family and earning a place in your heart.

Tom Price Community News World’s Greatest Shave Shaving it all off for a cause is the incentive behind the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave campaign which is run yearly and raises money for the 30,000 Australians who face a daily battle living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders. As Inside Ashburton went to print the funds raised nationally stood at just over $8 million with this figure set to expand as the Leukaemia

Foundation edged closer to its $15 million goal. Events were held all over Western Australia. In Tom Price, Shire of Ashburton community services coordinator Heather Patmore headed an event outside the Shire’s Community Services office. Teigan Don from All is Hair in Love and War joined in the fun, donating her time on the day to help shave heads and raise funds. “I was really pleased with the day and to see

people helping to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation to help support patients and families living with the illness. I would also like to thank Teigan and staff of All is Hair in Love and War for donating their time to carry out the shaves,” Patmore said. A BBQ and all shaves on the day raised $511.80 towards the cause, with Chris Patmore bringing in the highest fundraising amount for going the distance shaving his hair, beard, mo and eyebrows.

Women come together to celebrate all things feminine Over 50 women from Tom Price gathered to celebrate the 100th year of International Women’s Day (IWD) at a breakfast in March which was organised by the Nintirri Centre, Women’s Health, YMCA, Shire of Ashburton and Rio Tinto. North Tom Price Primary School principal Rochelle Williamson guided everyone through the programme with ease as the MC for the event, sharing her personal stories and

achievements along the way. Guests received inspirational speeches by a number of keynote presenters including Rio Tinto general manager Sinead Kaufman. To finish the morning off the Choir of Hard Rocks took to the stage to perform Shania Twain’s “Man, I feel like a woman”. A variety of bright and colourful paintings and pictures were also on display showcasing the talent of local

female artists and photographers. The IWD raffle was also drawn at the breakfast and first prize was won by Shane Turner, second went to Leanne Wassell, third to Anthony Ashton and fourth to Joyce Drummond The organising committee would like to thank all the guests who attended and in particular the entertainers, guest speakers and volunteers. Thanks also to all the local

businesses that supported this event including Rio Tinto, Shire of Ashburton, ESS, Savannah Engineering, Betta Electrical, Leonie Bailey Charted Accountants, Lestok Tours, Karijini Café, Tom Price Pharmacy, All is Hair in Love and War, Curio Corner, Leading Edge Computer Store, Nameless Café, Pilbara Food Services, Muzzy’s Home Hardware, GFR, Byblos Construction, Tom Price Post Office and WorkPac.

Revitalisation changes Tom Price forever As the photo shows what a difference a few weeks work can make; and who would have thought we would see the last of the old dilapidated facades of our main shopping centre. The revitalisation of the Tom Price town centre is taking shape and by the end of July the mall will look like a modern pedestrian walkway banked by garden beds, grassed surfaces and trees not to mention a new bus shelter and public toilets. The demolition aspect of the project is on target and the project is scheduled to be completed in July/August. It will

truly be a feature of our town where people can sit in shady comfort and take that cuppa while catching up with friends. It’s the beginning of a true shopping precinct with a new professional services building commencing at the end of this year. Watch the village green space for more development and don’t worry, the trees planted in the grassed area are being nurtured for replanting. Well done to everybody who has helped with the successful progression of this great Shire asset.

Onslow Community News Expression of interest sought over comprehensive Onslow airport plan In preparation for a major industry boom in Onslow, the Shire of Ashburton has been developing a comprehensive master plan for the Onslow Airport that will provide a framework for future enterprise planning and identify priorities for investment by the local government, aviation industry, resource companies and smaller private sector operators. For some time, Chevron has been planning to construct an LNG plant at the Ashburton North Strategic Industrial Area after announcing it was its preferred site of choice for its planned Wheatstone natural gas project. Shire of Ashburton president Greg Musgrave said the anticipated cost of the project was $30 billion, making it one of the biggest projects ever undertaken in Western Australia. He also said BHP Billiton’s (US$1.5 billion) Macedon domestic gas project was anticipated to commence shortly which would also be built in the same area. “We constantly hear about the unprecedented growth speculation on Onslow and given around 5,000 construction workers will move through

Onslow (excluding BHP’s project) access to flights to Perth direct or indirect is of concern to the community as identified through consultation in 2010. Consequently in December 2010, council voted in support of Onslow to be a deregulated RPT route and approve in principle Skippers Aviation to operate such a service. Musgrave said the decision paved the way for not only an upgraded aerodrome but also provided a substantial opportunity to develop industrial land in close proximity. At the March 16 council meeting in Paraburdoo, council presented an Onslow Aerodrome Master Plan. “The master plan shows potential development and business opportunities on surplus land close to the aerodrome and this makes a lot of sense, for example it’s not inconceivable for several freight companies established close to the airport to service urgent overnight freight requirements without jeopardising airport operations” “Nonetheless to realise this ambitious and worthy plan it required two planning amendments to be initiated along with a development plan based on the master plan and at the Paraburdoo meeting

Onslow Basketball and Netball Competition

Council voted to initiate the amendments”. Musgrave said the Shire would prepare the necessary amendment documents and refer them to the Environmental watchdog before community consultation can commence. “Depending upon the EPA position, advertising could start in June 2011,” he said. “All along the Shire of Ashburton has made decisions to assist Chevron with their LNG plant project and to open up land to ensure we maximise business opportunities for local and corporate businesses alike” “Approving the Onslow Aerodrome Master Plan and initiating planning amendments is another example of this” Musgrave said. The master plan anticipates a land release that will potentially provide lots of between 2000m2 to 1ha for a range of purposes including airport operations, freight logistics, commercial reasons and light industrial uses. As Inside Ashburton went to print, the Shire was calling for an informal register of interest from those potential operators who wished to participate in the Onslow Airport Enterprise Centre.

The Onslow Water Spray Park The Onslow Water Spray Park is officially open after months of anticipation from locals keen to test out the latest attraction. The park is open from 9.30am to 8pm daily and will be maintained by the Shire of Ashburton’s environmental officer.

The park will be cleaned daily and will close in case of severe weather warnings such as thunderstorm or cyclones. Plans are now underway to begin building a new parking area on Third Avenue for those who wish to use the park.

Paraburdoo celebrates International Women’s Day

Jasmina Stojanovic Milic said it is a great honour to finally become an Australian citizen and share Australian values and responsibilities, after her citizenship ceremony on February 25 in Paraburdoo. Both her and her husband Goran and their six-year-old daughter moved from Melbourne to Paraburdoo in June 2010, when her husband took up a fulltime job at Rio Tinto working at the light

vehicle workshop. “We decided to relocate to Paraburdoo because we were living apart from each other as my husband was flying in and out. I also got pregnant so fly in/fly out job was off the table, but apart from all that, moving to Paraburdoo has been a great experience and an opportunity to realise our goals and a great place for kids to grow up.”

This year’s event was held on Thursday March 10 at the Paraburdoo Shire Hall. The evening drew a huge crowd of ladies young and old. There were a variety of stalls and performances and some amazing food to enjoy. Not only was it a chance for the ladies of the community to have fun, but, it was also used as a fundraiser for the Kelmscott Bushfire Appeal. We raised a great deal of money with the final total

being $3182.00 to pledge by the Paraburdoo Community, so well done everybody that donated and came along. Although the Karingal Neighbourhood Centre hosted the event it would not have been possible without the generosity of the sponsors and key donators of the night. SAFE organised the cupcake and raffle day in Tom Price on March 26, which not only raised much needed funds but also created interest in some of their current foster animals and raised the level of public awareness of the great work that SAFE do in the community. The money raised from the day will go towards basic essentials like beds, bowls and food. “From our sales of cupcakes, raffle tickets, stubby coolers and wristbands we raised $286.00.
