Burials Esperance Funeral Services provide funeral service within the Shire of Esperance. Phone 9071 3245. Each grave has room for two interments, meaning two people can be buried in one plot. Ashes can also be interred under the plinth or at the foot of an existing grave. At the time of burial a concrete plinth is placed at the head of the grave to allow a monument to be erected at a later time. A plot or grave number is attached to the plinth which matches records held at the Shire. Records are available in the onsite information hut.

Reserved Plots Under the Cemeteries Act, a person is able to reserve a plot for themselves and/or their family for a period of 25 years. When reserving a plot, payment is required and a Grant of Right of Burial issued, confirming your right to that plot. The Right of Burial is issued in one name, however two people can be buried in that plot. If the grant holder passes away, a new Right of Burial is issued to the applicant.

Pioneer Graves

Locating Existing Graves

Monuments & Headstones

The first registered burial in the Pioneer Section of the Esperance Cemetery is dated at 1896. Considering Esperance setlled in the 1860’s, you can imagine how many pioneers lives are unaccounted for.

The Shire of Esperance has a comprehensive register of interments in the Esperance, Grass Patch, Salmon Gums and Condingup Cemeteries. By visiting the Shire Office, gravesites can be located and a map provided for your convenience.

There are no restrictions on monuments within the older burial sections of the Cemetery.

The Shire of Esperance keeps all burials on a database, for friends and relatives looking for details and locations of graves within the Cemetery. The database is updated after every burial.

Old Section The denominational areas of the Cemetery for new burials and second interments are subject to availability and suitability of the plot.

Maps and burial grid references are available in the information hut at the Esperance Cemetery. Numerous options are available within the Cemetery. Burials are the most popular as the Shire of Esperance does not have a crematorium, however if cremated, options for interment of ashes are available. Also access Grave information through www.findagrave.com.

Under the current Local Laws, all monuments in the Lawn Section must: be made of natural stone, placed upon a base of natural stone, and comply with certain specifications. A bronze memorial plaque may be attached to the monument.

Infant Memorial Section A relatively new section of the Cemetery, this area is available for children from birth to 3 years of age. The section is paved with a feature of a dolphin in the centre.

Remembrance Wall

Cemetery Fees & Charges

The front side of the Remembrance Wall is for plaques relating to ashes interred against the wall in the Rose Garden. The back side of the Remembrance Wall is for plaque only memorials.

As at August 2022

Niche Wall The Niche Wall sits behind the Remembrance Wall at the Esperance Cemetery. It may not look full, but many of the niches have been reserved and it is at capacity. The Shire has plans to extend the wall in the near future.

Tributes While artificial flowers look bright and colourful at first, in time they become faded, disintegrate and scatter throughout cemetery. Non-biodegradable items such as artificial flowers, flags, stuffed animals, cans, stubbies, clothing, additional vases and staked decorations to name a few will be removed at the end of each month.

Lawn Section The Lawn Section opened in 1983, and is the most popular area within the Cemetery. Graves are neatly aligned in rows in a lawned area. There are many plots available with work continuing to expand the section. In 2005, a gazebo was erected to provide a sheltered area for funerals. The Gazebo was a collaboration between the Shire of Esperance and Rotary International.

Rose Garden This section is for ashes interments. Ashes at the front have a plaque on the curbing in front of the garden, ashes at the back have a plaque on the front side of the Remembrance Wall. There is a paved section of the Rose Garden and a bench seat placed opposite on the lawn.
