Our love of horses gives us the perfect distraction

Aren't we fortunate! It would be easy to feel a bit despondent with the many problems in the world currently. However, our love of horses and involvement in their wellbeing gives us the perfect distraction where we can forget about the cares of the world and focus on our equine friends.

This year Shires Equestrian is 57 years old. During that time, we have worked hard to develop a range of products for both horse and rider that allow you to enjoy your equestrian activities. Safety is of prime importance when riding and working with horses. Our design team and our manufacturers are aware of this. You can purchase our products knowing that they have all been designed and tested with safety and functionality in mind.

Shires is the umbrella for ranges we have developed over a long period in the industry. ARMA is our main brand for horse equipment, along with Velociti leatherwork and of course Shires blankets. Aubrion is the clothing brand for riding and casual wear. Moretta covers footwear from riding boots to country and lifestyle, our Karben safety wear offers the rider protection in case of a fall. And then there are EZIGROOM and EZI-KIT yard ranges. Some of these names may be relatively new but they have a long history of development.

Fit is key to a happy and responsive horse

It is not just the mouthpiece that changes size for a smaller or larger bit, the ring and cheek* size can vary according to the mouthpiece size too. These sizes are indicated as measurements A or B at the end of the bit descriptions which correspond to the diagram above.

To measure your horse for a biT:

1. It is important that a bit is the correct width. Too wide will cause bruising and trauma, too narrow and it will pinch. For the correct mouthpiece width there should be a ¼ inch (5mm) clear on both sides. An index finger placed on each side is a good measure of the appropriate width.

The mouthpiece is measured between the inner ring hole edges as shown as C in the diagram. For the correct height a straight bar bit should sit neatly into the corners of the mouth and a jointed one just high enough to create gentle wrinkles.

2. With the bit at the correct height, place a gentle contact on both reins and then look from the front to judge the protruding mouthpiece width. For safety’s sake, keep your face to one side in case he suddenly lifts his head up. With a loose ring bit, take the measurement from the inside of the whole through which the ring passes. Seek professional advice if you are unsure.

Routine Mouth Care

Make it part of your horse’s stable management routine to have his teeth checked regularly by a good Equine Dental Technician or Vet. Ask them to show you how to part your horse’s lips and look at his mouth and bars after active work as this will enable you to be aware of bitting problems before they become issues.

N.B. Do not put your fingers inside your horse’s mouth!

Routine Bit Care

For a long life, and your horse’s welfare, wash the bit after every use, checking it’s condition and dry it with a clean towel. Store in a dry environment. Keep a close eye on your bridle and look out for stitching, loops, clips or buckles that may be in need of repair.

Stable Enrichment

In their natural environment, horses and ponies spend a significant part of their day foraging for food. When stabled, the time spent feeding is greatly reduced since the need to search out food is removed. Without foraging material, horses may direct their attention towards bedding or surfaces.

They can also display habits such as crib-biting, wind-sucking, hair eating and wood chewing/licking. Horses on box rest or restricted diets can adopt these unwanted habits too.

Increasing forage time can help discourage bad habits. Introducing a small mesh haynet (e.g. Greedy Feeder Net, p.260-262) or a stable toy such as the Ball Feeder which drip feeds horse nuts, can help extend feeding time. Activities that will alleviate boredom and stimulate interaction can also help. The Equine Scratcher is great for physical activity as well as being practical.
