hires has grown from very small beginnings to be a recognized and trusted brand around the world. From its bases in Leominster, UK; Epping, NH, USA; Co. Wexford, Ireland and Xiamen, China; Shires ships product to specialist retail partners worldwide. The Shires philosophy is to manufacture its own product range wherever possible. This enables retail prices to be extremely competitive while allowing quality to be above average compared to the market in general. Our staff have gained experience over a long period in selecting the best materials from partnerships with suppliers in international locations to ensure that products are fit for their intended purpose while also being at an affordable price level. In 2009 Shires was awarded a Royal Warrant from H.M. The Queen. This is awarded to companies who supply the Royal Household, in our case the Royal Stables, with product over a certain period. Suppliers must meet certain ethical standards in order to maintain the Warrant. Shires also supports the World Wildlife Fund in their project to reduce pollution in the Ganges area of India where much of the leather used by the equestrian and footwear trades is produced. We understand that we as producers and the end users of our products are privileged to have an association with one of the most noble animals – the horse. During the period in which we have been in business we have worked with experts in their field to produce products which give both horse and rider the comfort they deserve. Today’s technology has produced materials that help horse and rider to maintain a good level of comfort when competing at all levels. Safety is also of prime importance when working in a sport where both horse and rider can at times be at risk. All of Shires products are thoroughly tested before being put on the market and meet the required safety standards where applicable. What is the Shires Equestrian’s Royal Warrant? Our Royal Warrant, as suppliers of equestrian equipment, clothing and footwear, is a mark of recognition of those who have supplied goods or services to the Households of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales for at least five years, and who have an ongoing trading arrangement. The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors: HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales. Getting The Fit Right Shires has been designing and manufacturing horse blankets for 50 years and knows blanket fit is key. To help determine the right fit for your horse, use our blanket fitting guidelines listed below:

Measuring Your Horse • Measure your horse before you go to your local tack shop. This can be done with a tape measure. Simply put one end of the tape in the center of your horse’s chest and the other end on the horse’s buttocks where you would expect the blanket to finish. • Horse blankets are sized in centimeters, inches or, feet and inches. Make sure you check what size blanket you are getting as a 66” blanket will not fit a 6’6” horse. • When you’ve bought the blanket, take it home and try it on your horse over a clean bedsheet or clean summer sheet—make sure you leave all the tags on. If the blanket fits, then remove the tags and use; if not, you might be able to return the blanket to the retail store you purchased it from as long as it is in a saleable condition —check with your retailer at the time you purchase the blanket.

How Can I Tell If The Blanket Fits? 2

A blanket will not stay in place unless it fits properly. A badly fitting blanket will slip and could cause discomfort for the horse and/or be strained to the breaking point. • The blanket should fit well over the withers and the shoulders so that the horse can move freely without the blanket slipping back. • The chest straps should be fastened so that the fabric overlaps underneath them. The straps should be tight enough to hold the blanket in place, but not so tight that it causes the blanket’s shape to distort on the horse’s back or could cause pressure points around the horse’s chest and wither area.

Blanket & Neck Size

• Cross surcingles should be fastened so you can fit a hand’s breadth between the surcingles and the horse’s body. This means that the straps are tight enough to prevent legs becoming caught should the horse lie down, but not so tight that the horse will be uncomfortable. • If the blanket has leg straps, they should be fastened so that the left strap is passed around the left hind leg and fastened back to the left side. The right strap should then pass around the right hind leg, loop through the left strap, and then fasten to the right side. There should be about 4 – 5” between the strap and the horse’s leg to prevent the blanket slipping without causing the horse any discomfort.

ShireTex® advanced breathable fabrics are used in all Shires turnout blankets. Tough and durable, these fabrics are coated with a specially formulated hydrophilic coating that is designed to attract excess sweat and moisture. The difference in air temperature between the inside and the outside of the blanket then draws this sweat/moisture to the outside of the blanket where it dissipates into the atmosphere. Tests under controlled conditions ensure their suitability for horse blankets. Seams are taped to further ensure blankets are leak-proof.

Bit Fit

Fit Is Key To A Happy And Responsive Horse

It is not just the mouthpiece that changes size for a smaller or larger bit, the ring and cheek* size can vary according to the mouthpiece size, too. These sizes are indicated as measurements A or B at the end of the bit descriptions which correspond to the diagram above.

For the correct height a straight bar bit should sit neatly into the corners of the mouth and a jointed one just high enough to create gentle wrinkles. * where the bit has cheeks, e.g. hanging cheeks or Pelham, the measurement given is for the cheek rather than the ring.

Routine Mouth Care

Make it part of your horses stable management routine to have his teeth checked regularly by a good Equine Dental Technician or Vet. Ask them to show you how to part your horse’s lips and look at his mouth and bars after active work as this will enable you to be aware of bitting problems before they become issues. Note: do not put your fingers inside your horse’s mouth!

Routine Bit Care

For a long life and your horse’s welfare, wash the bit after every use, checking it’s condition and dry it with a clean towel. Store in a dry environment. Keep a close eye on your bridle and look out for stitching, loops, clips or buckles that may be in need of repair.

To Measure Your Horse For A Bit: Stand in front of your horse (for safety, with your face turned to one side) and with your hands hold a contact with the bit. Approximately 5mm (1/4 inch) on each side is correct (a little more can be allowed for loose rings). As a guide there should be space to fit one finger between the horse’s lips and the bits ends on both sides. There should be adequate space on both sides to clear the lips to prevent pinching but not so much that the bit can slide across the mouth. Note: Rubber bit rings need additional width. Remove the bit and lay it flat on a firm surface. Measure between the two corners of the bit, inside to inside (C) to find the width size of your horse’s mouth.

Understanding Special Materials Copper

Copper adds warmth and helps with salivation for dry-mouthed horses to keep the mouth soft.

Sweet Iron Copper

With a warm and pleasant taste, the sweet iron copper combination helps to promote salivation and encourage softening of the mouth. Raised copper ribs encourage lightness for horses that lean on the bit.

Brass Alloy

Copper is alloyed with a harder metal to produce warm, durable bits which aid salivation and are more palatable than stainless steel.

Blue Alloy

The blue alloy mouthpiece oxidizes easily to create a warm and sweet taste. Blue color will fade with use.

EquiKind

The EquiKind mouthpiece has a durable covering with a palatable apple flavor to make it gentle on a horse’s mouth.

Rubber

Rubber allows less movement and provides a softer mouthpiece.
