6.11 Environmentally Sustainable Design Strategies & Opportunities

6.11.1 Exterior

6.11.2 Roof

Building Layout & Orientation: Predominantly north and south oriented. Sunshading provision to eastwest facades.

High Solar Reflectance Roof Fins Roof tops hardscaped with high solar reflectance with the adoption of light colours.

Natural Daylighting: Living spaces and common areas have natural daylighting to reduce energy use for artificial lighting.

Sustainable Materials: As much as possible using locally availbe and sourced building material to reduce carbon footprint from material transportation. Modular facade system to minimise material wastage during construction.

Office Gardens: Bring nature closer to the office spaces and help to increase air quality.

Energy Efficiency: High performace glass, curtain wall, roofing systems to minimise solar heat gain to and cooling loads of airconditioning systems.

Natural Ventilation: Carpark designed with natural ventilation as much as possible. Use of mesh to provide natural ventilation while still maintaining building aesthetics. Use of CO sensors to regulate demand for mechanical ventilation.

Green Features: Drought tolerant plants; autochtonous plants to minimize irrigation need.

Stormwater Management: Water collection and treatment for water features, landscape irrigation, greywater system and MEP equipment cooling.

Waste Management & Treatment: Recycle waste building material during redevelopment and sewage treatment plant & recycling (paper, glass, plastic, food & organic waste) post completion of the redevelopment.

W Group Office Tower, Bonifacio Global City, Metro Manila, Philippines | Final Concept Design

In this project I worked on coordinating with the team to layout and print the document, including doing planning the office and carpark levels. I also partcipated in drawing the plans, sections and elevations together with the team. I also took charge of the rendering direction and 3D printed a model of the final tower design. My personal contributions within the team are outlined below:

RICK MATHER ARCHITECTS_ LANCESTER UNIVERSITY SPINE: UNIVERSITY SPINE REDEVELOPMENT

The project’s aim is to rejuvenate the principal pedestrian walkway on Lancaster University’s Bailrigg campus - the ‘Spine’. The proposals involve re-defining the Spine as a necklace thoroughfare with enlivened building frontages, and a series of characterful connecting spaces with diagonal relationships to knit the campus together. The proposals are informed by the original 1960s campus vision and a sense of the original rich design concepts. Bringing this to the 21st century the scheme envisages a rejuvenated spine that is firstly about space and variety whilst providing functionality, shelter and protection. The approach to has been developed by reviewing and understanding the historical nature of the site and surrounding context. This research informed the proposals and has identified potential opportunities for existing structures to be reused and enjoyed by new communities through contemporary intervention.

My personal contributions within the team are outlined below: - Early Experimental Models: Sketch Up + Physical Models at 1:250 and 1:500 - Site Modelling in 3D for Flythrough Video + Rendering - Rendering images in Photoshop - CAD: Detail construction drawings Programmes used: Sketch Up 3D, Microstation (BIM), Adobe Suite

31

32

Site Photos Before & After Construction:

A single unifying new hardwearing ‘carpet’ of paving underpins a rich and warm material selection enhanced by soft landscaping. Complementing this, lighting is key to provide a vibrant, changeable and safe spine, which - married with wayfinding and entrances - will make a lighter brighter and more navigable route. Cantilevered canopies provide shelter and enclosure whilst also opening up long views and openness to spaces, courts and gardens. Views to the sky and allowing light into the spine have been prioritised and the canopy is configured to maximise light reflection and diffusion throughout the year. The design solutions and material selection are robust and durable with a focus on use, maintenance and longevity.

NUS_Y5 DESIGN YOUR LIFE: LEARNING AND WORKING IN THE AGE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE UTOPIAN PROPOSAL SET IN 2049 HONGKONG Supervisor: Dr. Rudi Stouffs

Process • Research & Thesis writing • Modelling (Rhinoceros 3D) • Rendering • Model making (Laser cutting, 3D printing)

‘Design Your Life’ is a communal retreat that melds self-development with the envisioned technological advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital manufacturing of 2049. The retreat’s form and structure emphasize an extensive configurational flexibility supported by a framing structure embedding robotic pathways to transport user-designed and manufactured wall components. As such, it represents the ultimate makerspace, where participants are invited to work on any scale, including the facilities they inhabit and use. _ The premise of the thesis is set in Hong Kong, Cheung Chau Island in 2049, and grapples with the challenge to human dignity and self-actualisation in a world overtaken by A.I., but also posits the opportunities it affords to reimagine fundamental approaches to architecture. The thesis imagines 2049 to be a time of social and political instability, being two years after 2047, the year in which the ‘one country, two systems’ political framework would be terminated. Technological progress would have also enabled A.I. to take over many basic human jobs.

49

MEDIAPOLIS: ARACADIA PROCESS Arcadia, defined by us as ‘life lived naturally’, was a notion we followed throughout the semester in the context of Mediapolis and the future of work, both which are increasingly saturated and defined by the digital media. As the research progressed, we ended up with 3 concepts that would define our architecture: The Collective is the Power; as a reaction to the site of Mediapolis, the heart of media. It is a metaphor of the current state of media and a dynamic that we wish not to exclude, even as we tackled with issues of the site on a masterplan level. Connecting the Mediapolis site to issues in Singapore and the larger neighbouring region, our

50

proposal critiques the responds to the successes and failures of the current masterplan.

with the Zone eluding to a soft power – the power to lure, with the strong and repeated language forming its prominence and character.

Distance as Power;

We interviewed media veterans, start-up founders and venture capitalists to grasp a sense of how our proposal can remain relevant and contribute to Singapore’s media industry. We also visited a co-working space, the Hub, whilst researching on the history of office typology and critiquing the successes and failures of different models. These debates formed the backbone of our proposal of architecture in the future of work. We are influenced by the typology of the courtyard, as seen in Trinity College, as a means of social integration. Formally, we were especially inspired by Santiago Calatrava as we optimized our column and floor slab structurally, simultaneously crafting a tropical façade design – and exploring the design of the three modular components in 3D printed iterations. *

with distance signifying a consolidated power. This imbues identity on the context of a ‘non-space’ – where the space is defined by a lack of context, with much of its previous history flattened out. Grappling with such a site, we did numerous massing explorations at 1:50 scale to test how our proposal respond and mend the rifts of the site. Simultaneously, we looked at our programmes and planned our spaces through the viewpoints and narratives of 3 major users of the building: the resident, the start-up founder, and the events visitor. Building as the Zone;

51

FINAL PROPOSAL Our final proposal is a building that fosters a natural state of living and social integration – what we defined as the Arcadia at the beginning of our inquiry. To push the concept of power and a strong identity in the site, our proposal reflects an even clearer definition from the surrounding buildings. It stands as a building that holds its own unique identity and atmosphere – aspiring to be a destination in Mediapolis - or as a critic remarked, an ‘Instagram-able building’. Our modular systems consist of the floor slab to column module, which is multiplied and slightly modified throughout the building, in addition to the tropical façade module. The porosity offered through the optimised floor slab to column module design allows natural light to penetrate deep within the building. The arches also work to hold up the weight of the building, creating open

52

spaces for collaborative work, as well as a flexibility to modify the modulated floor slabs as needed. The modular tropical façade is designed to provide sun shading and rainwater collection properties, adding diversity and tropical protection to the open-air working spaces. We iterated our floor slab to column and tropical façade modules, all the while experimenting with 3D printing and deliberating on the opportunities the technology offers us in construction. Hence, we foresee our proposal as a 3D printed concrete building. Following our iterative process, our final proposal surprisingly eludes to the Baroque and the Rococo style formally. Despite similarities to these styles that are highly aestheticized and decorated, however, our proposal remains unyieldingly structurally logical. As 3D printing quickly integrates itself into the construction industry, our proposal perhaps suggests that as the construction process becomes more

automated, there will be a nostalgia for styles that modern architecture has long abandoned – the celebration of the attention on craft and detail that has suddenly become very feasible.

BARTLETT_Y3 FINAL BUILDING PROJECT BRICK & BREAD HOUSE AT GOLDERS GREEN: PRESERVING & CELEBRATING RITUALS Process • Research & Thesis writing • Modelling (Rhinoceros 3D) • Rendering • Model making (Laser cutting, 3D printing)

The Brick and Bread house is a socio-political statement that the identity of any community is built upon knowing where one comes from, and embracing that. My programme for the Brick and Bread house stems from the social, cultural, religious and historical rituals of Golders Green. It responds to the Jew’s Sabbath bread rituals, bringing them together with more secular brick-making historical precedent to a community house that encourages social interaction between the high percentage population of Jews and non-Jews in the area. The essence of the building also borrows from the historically relevant Arts and Craft movement that was prevalent in the area against the advert of tube train development - seen as an enroaching capitalist threat against the suburbs. It aims for a rustic, industrial feel and its programme is a throwback to the sharing of skills through crafts as a means of community bonding. Very aptly next to the tube station, it is architecture as a political and historical statement. Also situated next to the Hippodrome theatre, a development historically significant to Golders Green but in recent years procured by a private institution, the brick and bread house also borrows the architectural type of the theatre, symbolically returning the theatre to the people. The rituals in the Brick and bread house are also elevated to be performative; with hopes that the public see similarities in their making processes as they see similarities in different segments of community. What results is a building that is one part architecture, one part political statement, one part community - as it embodies and grows with the community.

BARTLETT_Y2 WIFI SIGNAL MAPPING TENT IN ICELAND: DESIGN, FABRICATION & INHABITATION Process • Research & Thesis writing • Modelling (Rhinoceros 3D) • Rendering • Model making (Laser cutting, 3D printing)

The tent was built as part of a mapping project to map out the advert of technology, specifically WIFI connection, in the rural areas of Iceland whilst travelling there on a school trip. Completed at 1:1 human scale and within airplane luggage limitations, it exists in two states. The first - a wheel-like structure that roams around with a signal detecting LED light that flashes with the existence of WIFI; and the second - an inhabitable structure to sleep at night when I rest from exploration in the day.

1:1 Tent made from corrugated cardboard, nylon fabric, wood blocks. It has 2 states - a wheel to search and illuminate Wi-Fi and a shelter.

Far Left: First state - Night time, a shelter in the cold Left: Second state -The Rolling tent, roaming and illuminating Wi-Fi signals in Iceland. Long exposure photograph

The Peace & Power Pavilion is a temporary structure designed as an urban resting and recharging place to counter the lack of free seating in retail mall settings. The construction is designed to be modular and easily set up and taken down. Presence sensors trigger moving and interactive lights on the spine edges when people sit on the seats, and each seat comes embedded with handphone chargers for users to put down their phones and interact with each other in this new environment. Music is also embedded into the structure. In this structure, it is hoped that visitors are able to experience a ‘Moment’ with strangers in the normally isolating retail mall setting.
