The design brief was to think of an installation which could be temporary in nature and be set up anywhere in India. The idea was to think of the most common place visited by people in the society which could then be re-interperated.

THE TEMPLE OF MAN

India being a secular country provided an ideal platform for designing an installation which could tap the religion sentiments of the people. The installation aimed at representing the idea of God in various religions. The deisgn tried to depict this idea of God through the play of light instead of idols or holy scriptures.

The design revolved around the architectural elements of hiduism, islamism, sikhism and christinianity. The central concept was to abstract the idea of a church, mosque, gurdwara and temple in terms of the scale, fenestrations and material. Initially light studies were done with light boxes which had literal design elements of different religions. The design had the function of a transitional space which tries to capture religion through spirituality depicted vis-a-vis architecture, rather than religious materiality.

A LIBRARY WITH EMOTIONS

The design brief was to create a library on M.G. Road, Gurgaon. The site itself has a lot of other activities going on in terms of the number of malls. Every mall on the road tries to stand out. The form approach for the design was to enhance or to amplify this character of the malls to such an extent that it divorces itself from the surroundings. The building was to cater to the context by not catering to the context. The intial concept of the building was to create a building which could be a response to the emotions of the people on road. Various flash mobs were done using color psychology. To limit the design idea, the color pschology was restricted to primary colors where blue represented a calm space, yellow represented a transitional space and red represented an impulsive and active space.

Scope of Accommodation: Library (on ramps) Audio-video Gallery Kids Space CafĂŠ Information Centre

The library was to be on ramps as it was imagined to be transtitonal in nature. Structurally, the vertical cores were to hold the ramps through suspension. The lifts are the main structural element of the building.

CONVENTION CENTER

The design brief was to create a convention center near M.G. Road, Gurgaon. The intial idea was to study the road patterns of Gurgaon. The study brought out two important patterns in terms of the two respective halfs of Gurgaon. The new Gurgaon region due to recent development had a grid-like pattern, while the other half (i.e old Gurgaon) had a much nodal configuration for the roads. The site is divided into two halves by a water body. The idea was to use these road patterns to generate the forms of the building on two sides. The site was to act as a microcosm for Gurgaon with old gurgaon on one side and new Gurgaon on the other split by the water body which symbolically represents the national highway. Scope of accommodation: Sports Center Audio video gallery Kids space CafĂŠ Office Standard Board Boutique Hotel Auditorium Exhibition Space Library Restaurants

The programming was also supposed to respond to the design brief. All the informal functions which include hotel, auditorium, sports center, old age, kids pace are a part of the nodal form (i.e old Gurgaon. All the formal functions like, office, library are a part of the grid form(i.e new Gurgaon) with the exhibition space tying the two forms through a bridge. /

Public Space

Office

The design brief was to design a hotel. so the idea was to design a nudist resort as it has a unique selling proposition and also caters to the context, as the hotel was proposed in goa.

THE NUDIST RESORT

The nudist or naturist ideology talks about how a person when nude connects much more with nature than he/ she does normally. The nudist ideology is very different from the idea of eroticism It is in fact contrary. Scope of accommodation: Restaurants Cafes Exhibition Space Shops Library Banquet Suits (70)

Programs Toilets Services

Suits

Landscaped Area

Circulation

Service Loop

Service Entrances

The idea was to rip off the earth’s surface on site just as one peels off a fruit’s skin and build the building under it, keeping the site as nude as possible. The agenda was to keep the site the way it was before building and adding minimum number of built forms to it. The resort had two phases, one for nudes and the other for non-nudes. The non-nudes are people who dress in minimum clothing to hide their genitals.

ARCHITECTURAL THESIS

Architecturally Challenging The Social Taboo Associated With Prostituion Sex work has been, is and arguably will always be part of the city and human history albeit with its own distinct flavor. Sex workers are as much a part of the city as any other having a right to the city like any other group. However, G.B. Road as we all know does not have the status of a legitimate part of the city. There is a stigma attached with sex work which is extended to the street. This results in a place that is poorly connected to the city both in its services, collective memory and imagination. The thesis deals with the issue of sex work on three levels - at the individual level, the community level and the G.B. Road-city level. At the individual level the thesis is concerned with how a sex worker interacts with the society. The community level focuses on how this community interacts with the society. The third and the final level poses problems that arise when G.B road as a street is read as part of a city.

Public and Private Building Intervention

The building itself acts as a sculpture in conveying a social message. It accounts for critical architecture.

Building Intervention

Public Spaces Private Spaces

The form is derived from the brothel itself. The brothel symbolizes the patriarchal order or mindset. The form is in a form of a brothel being brought down by the feminine form, indicating female dominance over male. The half which catered to the private sex worker community was a three-storey building containing vocational areas, health care, meditation centers. On each floor there was a play of public and private.

Built Landscaped

Brothel Intervention

The brothel intervention aims at dealing with the problem of the lack of social interaction of the sex workers with the community and the society. It aims at creating roof terraces and balconies for the sex workers. It also creates lanscaped spaces for the general public as GB road is situated at the very edge of old delhi. It gives sex orkers a chance to look beyond the hostile environment of the road

Community Intervention

The community intervention was proposed to intiate the interaction between the people from the society and the sex work community. The idea was to use Ajmeri gate as a tool to activate the entire space on account of a heritage site. The entire space was to be a plaza with three public buildings- an exhibition space, a mixed use development and the third being the public face of the building intervention itself.

URBAN DESIGN INTERVENTION

The design brief was to create a gateway to the village of old Gurgaon. The idea was encash on the pilgrimage on site. Sheetla mata mandir has been one of the most active sites in old gurgaon. The idea was to develop the entire area in such a way that it brings about economic growth for the people staying nearby and also for sheetla mata mandir to become a dominant reason for visiting old gurgaon. The dsign concept was of creating three axes along the road which would eventually connect themselves to the main bus stand.

GREENPLY EXHIBITION This exhibition by Romi Khosla Design studios was to be executed in Bangalore. The exhibition was for Greenply Industries. The entire project from design stage to its constrution was carried out under Mr. Martand Khosla’s supervision.
