In the bustling neighbourhood of Prabhadevi where children make every place their playground, and adults wonder: ‘where does “telemedicine” meet healthcare?’, daycare facilities coupled with mental healthcare and physical care for children and adolescents co-exist at a busy roadside junction with buildings lending themselves to the activities in an attempt to create a Safe-Scape for children and a rhythmic pause for its patients and visitors with the help of characteristic ‘V’ shaped columns and a form-breaking vehicular cut out in its linear profile.

Professor and ex student - Akshay Kamble of Ambedkar College, Dadar: “ ... anything particular about the teachings here? and how does it relate to Shivaji Park on 6th “DespiteDecember?”theircourse, every student learns about Dalit history and Ambedkar’s importance in the Dalit movement. Students help with the activities by organizing food and water for the people and help them travel to and from Chaityabhoomi. I did the same when I was “Soyounger.“would you like to share some other information about the activities?” “Many people bring in equipment to sell here, some come and buy the materials to build stalls to sell books, paintings, poetry, art and flags, which make the whole street Blue.

- A Blue Street, a case study on Dr. Ambedkar for the KRVIA Exhibition Architectural Design Studio 2021, semester VI under Rohan Shivkumar

The main road of Shivaji Park and the space outside Chaityabhoomi during the first week of December is one of the crowdest spaces that people witness in the area. With families travelling from all over India, the footfall of this lane reaches its yearly peak, with numerous stalls, shops, signages, banners and barricading structures built all around the profile of the street spreading across a span of 1.4 km, turning the whole road

The perennial and ephemeral programmes and spaces can interweave, creating a Pradakshina - which can then orient a person through the space with their right side facing the programme - especially spaces of learning and knowledge (as seen in buddhist cultures with Pradakshina walkways being arranged clockwise)

The Ambedkar college in Dadar coaches students of more than 6 different courses, and has a library on its 1st floor - so for the programme related to the site, a soft archive that stores and displays the work of the students is the formost idea - to create a space where music, art and inculcation can wholly co exist and intersect.

The people visiting from all over India and also living here as an ephemeral programme can understand and read the manuscripts, as well as view the work and the thesis of the students of the college - who can work here as well as use the space as an eating area, and a residential provision for their families to live in - borrowing from the programme of the former Siddharth Hostel.

REHABILITATION NEAR THE PANCHAKKI - An ongoing studio project Programme brief

Architectural Design Studio 2022, semester VII

The context of Panchakki in the urban fabric of Aurangabad involving the Kham river fosters a complex relationship of the river with the cohesive communities living along its banks- the Nava buddhas and Muslims. The main programme is rehabilitation of the informal settlements along and opposite the Panchakki, and the ones along the barapulla gate; on the site so that they can positively interact with the river. Additionally there would be transit living spaces for visitors and waqf board officials housing would be done in under PMAY, Smart Cities Mission and the Kham River Restoration (Varroc, Ecosattva, AMC and Waqf)

Active methods of behavioral rehabilitation can be adopted, with densely packed, creative ways to manufacture spaces between houses. The basis of the project is the main focus to REVIVE, The river and the Panchakki can be looked at through various criterias like water infrastructure, materials, water treatment, waste disposal and landscape strategies to restore the river edge [River] and design, built form, organization and topologies [Panchakki]

DESIGNING THE URBAN EDGE - KARANJA

REED

THE URBAN EDGE

Calculated on a basis of 40 people’s daily usage, the beds can be used to filter the greywater output using reeds and other plants, with a maintainence path routing from the housing area dedicated to repairs and cheking of the beds and the collection ponds.

The species of plants looked at to revive the UrbanKokilakshaedge: Cocklebur or Adhasisi

Pergolas engulfed within tree foliages as shown in plan

sea garden space - that visually and ecologically restores the greenery at the edge of the land BEDS

The wide concrete pad on the edge of the site brings in people arriving here from the ferries and other boats - and also serves as a road for trucks bringing in material for ship builing and maintainance. Creating the buffer space between the grasslands and the pad had to be connective to the housing and amphitheater space and short in height as to not block any views of the sea from the raised platforms behind the edge.

Sections

A jaali designed from their cultural community symbols is a repetitive pattern in the design.

The Rann of Kutchh in Gujarat is filled with salt pans and dotted with salt farmers that dont have a good relationtionship with the government, as a result, every october there are campaigns and officials from non profit bodies that come and try to rehabilitate the culture and financial freedom of the salt farmers and their families.

DESIGNING IN GEOGRAPHIES

Architectural Design Studio 2020, semester IV

The project looked at Incremental housing - and modulated typologies that could better the relationship of the people with the sand, with the sun, and within themselves as well.
