measured drawing Year I - Semester 1 Faculty: Shweta Manchanda Richard Barraud Satyakam Saha Radhika Vishwanath Location: Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, Agra, India Brief:
This measured drawing study was done in the second semester in a group of five. We travelled to Agra to study the Mughal architecture of the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, also referred to as the “jewel box” or the draft for Taj Mahal. The mausoleum was built in 1622 by Nur Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir, for her father. Situated on the banks of Yamuna river, the complex is built in sandstone and the tomb built in marble is placed in the centre of Char-Bagh (four-quartered plan). We measured the entire Char-bagh complex and the tomb structure in detail.

open air theater Year I - Semester 1 Faculty: Shweta Manchanda Richard Barraud Satyakam Saha Radhika Vishwanath Location: Jahangir Palace, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India Brief: In Orchha, we explored the architecture of the 17th century Jahangir Palace, characterised by the intricate details, complex forms, domes, and chhatris/canopies. Uses of many traditional architectural elements like arches can be seen built in stone. To contrast the traditional architecture with contemporary architecture, this open air theatre is designed with a simple cube form tilted on both axes to make it interesting, where one inclined surface of the cube becomes the seating area. It was envisioned to be a temporary structure in the large courtyard of Jahangir Palace, built in contemporary materials like steel and glass.

WA N T TA N D A L E
The focus of this first semester studio was to understand forms, and their representation in form of drawings - plans, sections and elevations. The design started with exploring simple geometries in a different orientation. The sketches on the left show the conceptual development of the Open Air Theatre in form of a cube tilted in both axes. To help visualise the form and the sections, physical block models were made, followed by a detailed model of the final form. All plans and sections were hand-drafted and rendered.

cultural centre Year II - Semester 4 Faculty: Mekhla Parihar Ramneet Kaur Akshay Shrinagesh Location: New Delhi, India Brief: The focus of this fourth semester studio was on site planning and response to immediate context. The site is located in a prominent location in Delhi, open on all sides and surrounded by office buildings, and a railway station behind. The brief was to design a cultural centre with an elaborate area program which includes auditorium, cafes/restaurants, gallery and exhibition spaces, offices and an observation deck on top of the building. The concept was to make a porous ground floor level to welcome pedestrians and a tapering tower that culminates into a observation deck.

The sketches on the left show the basic form development in response to the immediate context - establishing connectivity between railway station and the main road on the front, adding porosity by making courtyards as a response to the extreme climate of Delhi and so on. To further explore the form, physical models were made at every stage of the project.

office building Year III - Semester 6 Faculty: Shweta Manchanda Vandana Balakrishnan Debashish Majumdar Deepti Gupta Location: Rajpath Area, New Delhi, India Brief: The brief called for redevelopment of Nirman Bhawan which houses various ministries of Government of India and is a part of the Central Vista planned by Lutyens. It is accessed through Maulana Azad Road from the south of the site and the Rajpath gardens lie on the north. Details of services according to the bye-laws were in focus, along with energy efficient design through active and passive strategies. With a site area of 22500 sqm and built-up area of 40500 sqm, the program was split into 70 % office spaces to house the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Ministry of Medium and Small Enterprises, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and 30 % space for commercial activities for the general public, which includes exhibition and gallery spaces, retail outlets under government initiatives like Khadi Gram Udyog and other initiatives to promote local arts and crafts.

mixed use tower Year IV - Semester 7 Faculty: Ranjana Mital Kartik Dondeti Monish Siripurapu Location: Cape Town, South Africa Brief: The ongoing seventh semester studio focuses on parametric and computational design, using softwares like Rhino and Grasshopper for form development, simulations for radiation, temperature and daylight analysis, and optimisation of the design through orientation and design of a parametric facade/building skin. The site is a cultural and historic landmark which is located in the heart of Cape Town, and the brief calls for design of a mixed use tower with a cultural centre and office spaces on the top floors. The design challenge is to respond to the strong cultural context while using computational design tools to optimise the performance of the building.

Location
While the picturesque city of Cape Town is known for being one of South Africa’s biggest tourist attractions, it’s also where many local and international businesses choose to base their offices. The Central Business District is a major business district in Cape Town’s metropolitan area and serves as the financial centre of the Western Cape and South Africa. The South African parliament is located here, as well as the seat of government (for six months of the year). The Western Cape provincial government and City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality also have their head offices in the Cape Town CBD. City of Cape Town

Castle of Good Hope and Military Museum
Proposed site: GRAND PARADE It is located in the prime location of City Bowl area of the Table Bay district of Cape Town. This is where the Dutch built their first fort in 1652.; where slaves were sold and punished; and where crowds gathered to watch Nelson Mandela’s first address to the nation as a free man after 27 years in jail, made from the balcony of the Old Town Hall. The square is generally used as a market place and parking area but has also been the venue of major political rallies. It has some small structures for the market and two statues - one of King Edward VII and the other for the Volunteer War Memorial. This site can be redeveloped and a mixed use tower can be made to house the existing market and other additional functions. Site dimension = 125 x 250 meters; Site area = 30,000 sqm = 7.4 acres
