“The Indians use linen clothing, as says Nearchus, made from the flax taken from the trees, about which I have already spoken. And this flax is either whiter in colour than any other flax, or the people being black make the flax appear whiter. They have a linen frock reaching down halfway between the knee and the ankle, and a garment which is partly thrown round the shoulders and partly rolled round the head. The Indians who are very well-off wear earrings of ivory; for they do not all wear them. Nearchus says that the Indians dye their beards various colours; some that they may appear white as the whitest, others dark blue; others have them red, others purple, and others green. Those who are of any rank have umbrellas held over them in the summer. They wear shoes of white leather, elaborately worked, and the soles of their shoes are many-coloured and raised high, in order that they may appear taller.

The Begining of Floral Printing

When you think of printed fabrics, what pops into your head? Right now, we’ve got floral patterns on the brain, which isn’t surprising considering florals are perhaps the one of the most ubiquitous motiffs in fashion. Inherently beautiful, and available in a million different colors, textures, and styles, most of us likely have at least one floral dress or shirt hanging in the closet. Nowadays florals are a wardrobe staple, but how did the motif become so prevalent? Certainly they lend a touch of loveliness to a garment, but so can any other type of imagery. Aesthetics are only part of the equation. Long ago, flowers held deep meaning and symbolism, which people wished to imbue into their clothing. In addition to being a universal symbol of femininity

By the 1400’s and 1500’s, florals began to spread globally as European traders started purchasing the extremely ornate and detailed fabrics. These textiles would fetch very high prices, and subsequently, were considered a status symbol in Europe. Italy frequently traded in textiles with the Ottoman Empire, and the gorgeous velvet florals became a coveted design in Italian cities.

“Woodblock printing on textiles is the process of printing patterns on textiles, usually of linen, cotton or silk, by means of incised wooden blocks”. It is the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing. Block printing by hand is a slow process. It is, however, capable of yielding highly artistic results, some of which are unobtainable by any other method.

As for chintz, Dutch and British merchants brought the fabric to the west, where it’s popularity exploded. British manufacturers were at first mystified by the detailed and laborious process involved in the textile’s production, unable to replicate the beautiful results. Chintz was subsequently banned from import in 1680, only making its return in 1759 when a cheap production process had been developed.

Madhubani Art The painting was traditionally done on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts, but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas.

In the wake of the Industrial Revolution, textile production, particularly floral fabrics, had grown exponentially. Pieces that once could only be created by master craftsmen could now be replicated quickly and easily. This allowed complex motifs such as flowers to be more easily accessible to consumers, and florals’ popularity.

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” Miranda Priestley’s famed catty retort from The Devil Wears Prada may live on in infamy, but its been proven false time and time again. Fashion’s ongoing love affair with floral prints continues for Spring 2013 with a myriad of designers offering up their take on the iconic pattern. Be prepared to embrace your inner lady with floral print dresses, swimsuits, shoes, and even sunglasses. This season’s florals come in soft pastel colours and vibrant hues, all of which are some variation of the garden theme. While the floral print trend has been in full bloom for as long as we can remember, Spring 2013 brought with it oversized floral motifs that even included 3D designs. Erdem, king of the floral print, adapted his signature print in sorbet hued 3D appliqués that caught the eye of not one but two Hollywood A-listers before the collection had even hit stores.Another titan of floral prints, Oscar de la Renta, showed appliques so big, they were virtually life-size. For those less willing to live in bloom all season long, the floral trend still continues from previous years with

Around this time of the year, you can always count on a full floral fantasy to assure a smooth transition between seasons and this spring is no different. Betting on a modern take on florals, the spring 2014 fashion trends mark the new dawn of femininity. The blooming affair persevered on the spring 2014 runways, taking the form of light-as-air dresses, exquisite gowns, tailored suits, flowy skirts and silky jumpsuits alike. The technique used to print full-color images, such as color photographs, is referred to as four-color-process or merely process printing. Four inks are used: three secondary colors plus black. These ink colors are cyan, magenta, yellow and key (black); abbreviated as CMYK. Cyan can be thought of as minus-red, magenta as minus-green, and yellow as minus-blue.

All about Flower’s

Floral print often brings to mind tiny flowers and muted shades. But not this season! Bold-color backgrounds featuring large flowers evoke feelings of tropical islands and umbrella drinks. Avoid fussy details and accessories (opt for nude heels), and let the boldness of the color scheme take center stage. Put your sun-kissed shoulders on display with a sexy strapless floral dress. This feminine look is perfect for lazy days in the sun and casual nights on the town. Look for flirty details such as ruching, soft gathers and self-belts. Add some gladiator sandals for a contemporary look. You don’t have to be a teenager to wear a floral-print mini dress. Featuring spaghetti straps and a daring short length, the babydoll-style sundress is perfect for a neighborhood pool party or a day at the beach. Pair it with some jeweled flat sandals to showcase your gorgeous legs. If short is not your style, go long… really long. The maxi dress is perfect for every figure. To avoid the muumuu look, opt for maxi dresses with minimal upper-body material – strappy or strapless, but no sleeves, please!

Instead of a tank top with shorts, try a tank-style floral-print sundress. A mid-thigh length offers a playful, romper-style look. Add a pair of canvas espadrilles and you’re ready for fun. Eschewing her usual monochromatic style, the 41-yearold designer was spotted wearing a midi-length dress that was sprigged with a charming micro-bud pattern. It’s quite different from the flower prints she’s worn in the past; take the Pop Art version she donned this summer or the athletic-inspired iteration of the look she tried earlier this winter.Of course, accessories are key when it comes to making the look blossom in the right way. In this case, color-coordinated stilettos from Francesco Russo and a zip pouch of her own design do the trick, while oversize shades and a gold Rolex amp up the posh pick-me-up factor further still. Victoria Beckham finally tells us why she never smiles: Floral prints aren’t exactly anything new, but designer Victoria Beckham is making us reconsider the ladylike motif as a mood-brightening antidote to the darker side of winter fash.

Though the technique of printing fabrics with wood blocks is ancient, Western Europeans adopted it only a few hundred years ago. Zucchi, an Italian textiles manufacturer, has amassed a collection of some 56,000 examples from 1785 to 1935, and has created a museum for them in Rescaldina, near Milan. Now the company has dipped into this trove to create a line of bedding, table linens, throws and area rugs. The Zucchi Block Collection is based on 16 archival motifs, with every item in the group identified with the number of the block from which its pattern originated. Designed by Marta Giardini, the textiles are printed on pure linen that has been given a crumpled look, or on cotton percale. Prior to the invention of woodblock printing, seals and stamps were used for making impressions. The oldest of these seals came from Mesopotamia and Egypt. The use of round “cylinder seals” for rolling an impress onto clay tablets goes back to early Mesopotamian civilization before 3000 BC, where they are the most common works of art to survive, and feature complex and beautiful images. A few much larger brick (e.g. 13×13 cm) stamps for marking clay bricks survive from Akkad from around 2270 There are also Roman lead pipe.

A few years back, I bought a plain linen duvet cover with the idea to transform it using hand block-printing techniques. Like any good student, I knew I needed a bit of inspiration, along with a few tips and tricks.”

About Block Printing

Linoleum block printing can seem very intimidating at first, but with a little guidance and the right tools, it’s really a great new medium that all artists should give a try at least once. All of these tools can be bought at your local craft supplier. I bought a block printing kit at Michael’s Arts and Crafts store, and this included all of the basic printmaking materials that are needed. Speedball Art is a great supplier for block printing supplies. They are affordable and of good quality, especially for a beginner. “Linocut” is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed.

They may not be groundbreaking, but they will forever be considered the embodiment of spring, familiar yes, but never falling far from extraordinary. The Block Printing Designs and Techniques

“Linoleum printing is a form of relief printing, one of the easiest and most direct of all the printmaking methods”. Linocuts can be simplistic and graphic, or as intricately detailed as you want. It’s a subtractive process, meaning you cut away, or subtract, the areas you do not want to print.. Sketching : The first step is to sketch the design. It is important to reverse the image if you are using text, as the printed image will be the reverse of what is on the block. Once I have the image ready, I then transfer the design on to the linoleum to give me an outline of where to carve. Carving : The next step is to carve the design. I carve away the parts that I don’t want to print, as the ink will be applied to the raised surfaces to print the design. Whatever surface is untouched will be what prints onto the paper. Carving a block can take anywhere from an hour for a small piece, to several weeks or even months depending on the size and detail of the image. Painting over it : Once the block is carved, I trim the excess off with scissors to give it a straight edge, and then it is ready for printing. There are many different types of ink on the market, and it’s important to test them out to find the best one. I use oil-based inks because they give the best even coverage and print well on both fabric and paper, but there are lots of options out there.

Embossing : The most important part is applying the pressure evenly, since the color will be stronger in some areas of the print than others if uneven pressure is applied. This is also a step that takes some practice and perfecting. Printing over the material : The ink then takes several days to dry, so unlike other printing processes, there is a long wait time before the prints are ready to use. The oil based inks can take from two days to a week to fully dry, whereas water-based inks will dry slightly faster. The inks are made to dry slowly so that you are able to print without having the ink dry on the block; if you print with a fast-drying ink or paint, it will sometimes start to dry before you have even finished the print, giving a very uneven coverage.

While there are many techniques for reproducing images in color, specific graphic processes and industrial equipment are used for mass reproduction of color images on paper. In this sense, “color printing involves reproduction techniques suited for printing presses capable of thousands or millions of impressions for publishing newspapers and magazines, brochures, cards, posters and similar mass-market items. In this type of industrial or commercial printing”. The technique used to print full-color images, such as color photographs, is referred to as four-color-process or merely process printing. Cyan can be thought of as minus-red, magenta as minus-green, and yellow as minus-blue. These inks are semi-transparent or translucent. Where two such inks overwlap on the paper due to sequential printing impressions, a primary color is perceived. For example, yellow (minus-blue) overprinted by magenta (minus green) yields red. Where all three inks may overlap, almost all incident light is absorbed or subtracted, yielding near black, but in practical terms it is better and cheaper to use a separate black.

But to call these fabrics either Dutch or West African is to ignore a far more complicated set of origins. Yinka Shonibare, the well-known Nigerian artist whose work often features these prints, has made a career out of exploring the history of the designs. “The fabrics are not really authentically African the way people think,” Shonibare has said. “They prove to have a crossbred cultural background quite of their own.”

India’s recorded history of clothing goes back to the 5th millennium BC in the Indus Valley civilization where cotton was spun, woven and dyed. Bone needles and wooden spindles have been unearthed in excavations at the site. The cotton industry in ancient India was well developed, and several of the methods survive until today. Herodotus, an ancient Greek historian described Indian cotton as “a wool exceeding in beauty and goodness that of sheep”. Indian cotton clothing was well adapted to the dry, hot summers of the subcontinent. The grand epic Mahabharata, composed by about 400 BC, tells of the god Krishna staving off Draupadi’s disrobing by bestowing an unending saree upon her. These images show dancers and goddesses wearing what appears to be a dhoti wrap, a predecessor to the modern sari. The upper castes dressed themselves in fine muslin and wore gold ornaments. The Indus civilisation also knew the process of silk production. Recent analysis of Harappan silk fibres in beads have shown that silk was made by the process of reeling, a process known only to China until the Clothing in India varies depending on the different ethnicity, geography, climate and cultural traditions of the people of each region of India.
