The First Two Accusations On VV Mineral For Illegal Mining Proven False
As mentioned by the Indian Bureau of Mines, VV Minerals, India, was the company that was involved in the illegal mining of Monazite in Tamil Nadu. However, the newspaper article that was published about the thorium scam did not mention any names. According to them there were speculations about the fact that some people were not allowed to enter the mining premises on the sand mining sites. Hence their first claim was
that there was some illegal activity going on in the beach area and the company involved was transporting monazite to their warehouses, hence not allowing anybody to enter the site. The second claim arises from the amount of Thorium reserves in the country. According to the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research, commonly known as AMDER, in a report presented in the lok sabha in 2002, there were 12.8 tonnes of thorium present in India. But, in a similar report presented in the year 2012 stated that there were 10.7 tonnes of thorium present on Indian beaches, raising a question about the 2.1 tonnes of monazite missing in the given period of time. This indicated that there were about 235,000 tonnes of thorium missing in the intervening period and the private company alleged for this was VV Minerals. Nevertheless, these confusions have now been cleared. The DNA article which was published on 28th April 2014 by Jaideep Prabhu, throws some light at the possible explanations to these claims. For the first claim, he said, there could be two logical explanations. On one hand, when one talks about restricting access, it has to be noted that, allowing unauthorized people in their private facilities is breach of security and safety. In fact it is even illegal for private companies to allow pedestrians without the right permissions to enter the premises where nuclear minerals are stored. Also, these mining facilities are
supposedly under the jurisdiction on AERB and only after you get authorization from them is it possible for the visitors and inspectors to enter the premises storing nuclear minerals. Therefore there is a very simple yet logical explanation as to why people without permissions were denied access in the storage facilities and mining areas. Claim 2 which talks about the missing amount of Thorium reserves in the period between 2002 and 2012 declares that 235000 tonnes of thorium are missing from the Indian beaches and it also stated that the missing thorium is illegally hoarded and exported by private companies like VV Minerals. This is hardly even possible because this nuclear mineral may be abundantly available in our country, but, it’s not rare in other parts of the world. It is widely found in parts of Brazil and other countries; therefore it is not an extremely rare and valuable mineral that needs to be illegally exported for greater value because it is readily available in other parts of the world as well. And, the figures claimed in the accusation do not match up to the actual consumption or production of our country. . Because, this much amount of thorium could possibly power India at present rated for approximately 700 years. The annual consumption of thorium is 4 tonnes annually. And the world consumption can be summed up to 10 tonnes. According to the
statistics the IREL itself exports about 5 tonnes of monazite per annum. Therefore, it is understandable, that the numbers quoted in this scam do not match up to the actual consumption. VV Minerals India is a highly recognized heavy mineral mining company in the world. It is family grown business started by Mr. S Vaikundarajan, Chairman of VV Group of companies. They are India’s biggest mining, manufacturers and exporters of Garnet. They have been awarded as the ‘Number One Garnet Exporters’ of our country. They also undertake Zircon mining, Rutile mining and Ilmenite mining.
