SPOTLIGHT

Shiv Nadar University Day celebrations held

On April 5, 2024, the University Day celebrations brought together the founding family, students, faculty and staff.

In a beautifully curated gallery in the G Block, 18 academic departments, Dean of Student Affairs office, Career Development Centre and Atal Incubation Centre, showcased their achievements and important activities during the year.

Mr. Shiv Nadar, Founder and Former Chancellor of Shiv Nadar University, Mrs. Kiran Nadar, Chairperson of Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and Trustee of Shiv Nadar Foundation, Mr. Shikhar Malhotra, Chancellor of Shiv Nadar University, and Ms. Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Chairperson of HCLTech, Trustee of Shiv Nadar Foundation, were present on the occasion.

The celebrations included performances by student clubs, talk by two of our alumni and the highlight was the fireside chat with the founding family (Mr. Shiv Nadar, Mrs. Kiran Nadar, Mr. Shikhar Malhotra and Ms. Roshni Nadar Malhotra), where they shared their life journeys, interesting anecdotes and experiences with the audience.

Two alumni from the founding batch of the university shared their reflections. It was a delight to hear Meghna Joshi (B.Tech. Computer Science Engineering), currently working with Gartner, and Sharan Devkar Shankar, (B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering), who is pursuing a successful career as an independent cinematographer and photographer.

The day concluded with the launch of the 2024 yearbook by Ms. Kiran Nadar.

Our very special thanks to every member of the university community who made this day possible, and especially to the CDC team led by Ms. Anubha Bali who curated the day with such grace and dedication.

Industry Partnership Meet held in Hyderabad

Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR hosted the Hyderabad edition of the Industry Partnership Meet on April 19, 2024. It saw participation from over 50 organizations who discussed fostering collaboration between industry and academia in the “Emerging Technologies”.

Discussions during the event highlighted the importance of students cultivating expertise in automation and design technology and stressed the value of experiential learning through internships and project work. Students should be savvy with Mobility, Analytics, Cloud, and Security courses with hands-on project experience without losing focus on basics.

Night of Champions held

Sports is an integral part of Shiv Nadar University. No academic year ends without the celebration of the university’s stories of grit, courage, and determination in various sporting activities. ‘Night of Champions held on April 20, 2024, brought together the students and teams who brought accolades to our university nationwide.

Third Macroeconomics workshop held

The Department of Economics organized the third Macroeconomics Workshop on April 5-6, 2024.The keynote lecture titled ‘Carbon Credit Markets, and Regulation: Bad Measurement, Bad Design, and Wrong Expectations’ was delivered by Dr. Roberto Rigobon, Society of Sloan Fellows, Professor of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

A panel discussion on ‘State of the Indian Economy’ was also held which saw senior faculty and experts in macroeconomics as panelists.

The workshop served as an excellent platform for interaction with some of the most renowned economists in the world.

The Department of History and Archaeology holds ‘Towards Inclusive Global Histories: Challenges and Possibilities’

The Department of History and Archaeology and the Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies, New Delhi organized an interdisciplinary event titled, “Towards Inclusive Global Histories: Challenges and Possibilities” on April 5, 2024 at India International Center (IIC), New Delhi. The keynote lecture was delivered by Professor Jahnvi Phalkey, Science Gallery Bengaluru. On April 6, 2024, a doctoral workshop was held at the university campus on the same theme.

Dr. Atul Mishra, Associate Professor and Head, Department of International Relations and Governance Studies, spoke on the dimensions and challenges of contemporary Indian foreign policy at the 71st Professional Course for Foreign Diplomats of Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service, MEA.

The Young Thinkers Forum (YTF) receives the 2024 Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA) Recognition of Merit Award in the “Excellence in Innovative Practices” category

The Young Thinkers Forum (YTF), a flagship student experience initiative of Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR has received the 2024 Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA) Recognition of Merit Award in the “Excellence in Innovative Practices” category. The award was presented to Ms. Vinnie Khanna Mathur, Chair, Young Thinkers Forum, at the 2024 Middle East, North Africa & South Asia (MENASA) region of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) Conference at Qatar University, Doha.

The Young Thinkers Forum is an extraordinary platform dedicated to guiding high school students, specifically those in grades 8th to 12th, on self-discovery and personal growth. The mission is to help young individuals identify their areas of interest and equip them with the knowledge and skills to pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career.

Dr. Ghosh’s paper “Nanostructured antimicrobial ZnO surfaces coated with an imidazolium-based ionic liquid”, accompanied with the illustration by Kumar Mohan was published in the journal - ‘Materials Advances’ of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

ACTIVITIES

Memorandum of Understanding with Fairtrade India signed

Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Fairtrade India on April 25, 2024. This association signifies a relationship between two organizations that believe in working toward social justice and sustainability. Mr. Abhishek Jani, CEO, Fairtrade India, and Ms. Ajanta Sikdar, Senior Consultant, Youth Engagement & Education Programme at Fairtrade India, visited the campus and were accompanied by members from Shiv Nadar Foundation, HCL Foundation, students, and teachers from Shiv Nadar Schools, Vidya Gyan, and Shiv Nadar University.

The university’s Fairtrade steering committee is leading this initiative. It is co-chaired by Professor Darryl Reed, Faculty, School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Dr. Sudarshan Naidu, Faculty, School of Management and Entrepreneurship; the members are Ms. Prachi Pandit, Senior Consultant, Shiv Nadar Foundation, Ms. Vinnie Mathur, General Manager, External Relations, Office of the Vice Chancellor, Mr. Anand Sharma, Senior Director, Administration, Mr. Dinesh Sajwan, Head, Procurement, all from Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR, and two students from the university - Ms. Subhashri S. and Ms. Navika Chadha.

The highlight of the event was the enthusiasm shown by students from the Shiv Nadar Schools, Vidyagyan and the university. The university is grateful to the partners who took time out and travelled to attend the event.

Launch of Bio Science Forum

The Department of Life Sciences launched a unique initiative, ‘BioScience Forum’, that bridges the gap between departments and disciplines within life sciences, on April 12, 2024. ‘The BioScience Forum@SNU’ is a seminar and discussion series dedicated to fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and exploring vast world of biosciences.

The inaugural talk titled ‘Exploring Evolutionary Perspectives on Epigenomic Regulation in Early Vertebrate Embryogenesis: Cell Fate Determination and Tissue Specification’, was delivered by Professor Sanjeev Galande.

Talk by Fulbright-Nehru distinguished scholar

Professor John Portz

Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR, in partnership with the United StatesIndia Educational Foundation (USIEF), New Delhi, organized, a talk titled ‘U.S. Election 2024: Biden vs. Trump 2.0’ on April 25, 2024. The talk was delivered by Professor John Portz, Fulbright-Nehru distinguished scholar affiliated with the Centre for Canadian, US, and Latin American Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Professor of Political Science, Northeastern University, Boston.

The talk examined the candidates, the election process, key strategies for each campaign and the major issues that are likely to shape the election.

Second edition of Crooked Lines launched

The second edition of ‘Crooked Lines’, short story competition for young writers was launched on April 22, 2024.

The competition is open to all Indian residents aged 16-18 years and gives the young writers an opportunity to showcase their skills on a national platform and win attractive cash prizes.

The jury comprises of Professor Sam North, novelist, scriptwriter, Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Exeter, Ms. Rashmi Menon, Executive Editor at HarperCollins Publishers India and Mr. Jerry Pinto, award-winning novelist, and a poet and translator.

Launch of Summit, inaugural annual undergraduate academic research conference

‘Summit 2024’, the inaugural edition of annual undergraduate academic research conference of Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR, was launched recently. This conference would give an opportunity to all undergraduate students at the university to showcase their research and engage in multidisciplinary dialogue. An amount of INR `40,000.00 has been set aside as prize money for different categories including ‘Best Paper Award’.

Themes for the research papers focus on ‘Sustainability and Green Future’, ‘21st Century Humanity’, ‘Culture and History’, and ‘Future Technologies and Innovation’, to solve a pressing real-world problem.

Third edition of Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR’s Business Simulation Challenge (BizSim)

held The 3rd edition of Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR’s Business Simulation Challenge (BizSim) 2024 was organized by the School of Management and Entrepreneurship at the university. It drew MBA aspirants from across India and saw participation from 15 institutions. Devesh Agarwal from the Royal Global University emerged the winner with Shashank Pandey and Ashutosh Dubey from Galgotias University securing the 1st and 2nd runnersup positions.

First Responder training program to handle emergencies on the campus held

In order to enhance community participation in campus safety, the Office of the Dean of Students organized a three week ‘First Responder’ training program which was facilitated by HCL Health Care. The students, wardens, and security staff engaged in a dynamic learning experience, honing critical skills in first aid, crisis management, and security measures.

Dr. Iram Gufran’s documentary titled ‘A Terrible Beauty’ premiered at Visions du Reel International Film Festival, Nyon, Switzerland, as part of the International Medium Length and Short Film Competition section.

Dr. Gufran, Associate Professor, Department of Art, Media and Performance, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shiv Nadar University, Delhi NCR, used the documentary format to create this science-fiction fable which is shot in China and foreshows the rise of AI.

Awards and Recognitions

Aksaj Bharatwaj won the best paper award in the 6th IEEE International Conference on “Emerging Smart Computing and Informatics”.

A project undertaken by Aksaj Bharatwaj during his summer internship at Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow (Madhya Pradesh), has occupied a place of prominence in recently concluded “Inno-Yoddha’ competition and also won the best innovation prize.

Xcelerate 2.0, business simulation and pitching competition held

Xcelerate 2.0, a 24 hour business simulation and pitching competition with an objective to bring out the entrepreneurial spirit in students was held from April 13-14, 2024. The event saw 150 participants from 50 colleges across the country. The participants pitched their ideas to a panel of esteemed judges. Mr. Divyanshu Anand, Vice President, PayTM gave the key note address during the closing ceremony.

Iqtisadiyyat, Annual Economics Conclave held

Iqtisadiyyat, annual Economics conclave was held on April 6-7, 2024. The conclave saw fireside chats, Nifty Nirvana competition, Policy Shastra and Mad Ads competition and various interactive sessions.

The event encouraged the students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and explore their interests beyond conventional boundaries, fostering a holistic learning experience that extended beyond textbooks and classrooms.

Students from Shiv Nadar school, Gurugram were also a part of the event.

Participation of students from Ridge Valley Public School in Culture and Literature event

100+ students from Ridge Valley Public School participated in the Culture and Literature event held at the university campus on April 19, 2024.

The students got a unique insight into diverse literary themes and perspectives. The event included an engaging workshop on “Critical Thinking: How to think about what we take for granted”, by Dr. Chinmay Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences; a session by Dr. Sreejata Paul, Assistant Professor, Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences delving into the life and works of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, South Asia’s First Female Science Fiction Writer; a workshop titled “Music and Literature: The Blues” by Professor Sambudha Sen, Senior Professor and Head of Department, Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences exploring the intricate relationship between music and literature.

Community Initiatives

Dadri Development Program (DDP)- Its key focus areas currently encompass education (school /community sports), healthcare, skilling and livelihood, agriculture, social safety (with a special emphasis on women), and nature conservation.

Highlights

Soft launch for the “Ujjwal Dadri” project at the Community Health Centre in Dadri block conducted. The initiative, focusing on substance use prevention, was graced by esteemed guests including Medical Superintendent and Block Health Manager along with other health officials from CHC, DDP core Program team and NGO partner. The event also witnessed participation from frontline workers - ASHAs, Anganwadi workers, and students from various villages of Dadri.

The soft launch of women empowerment program, ‘Shilp Shakti’, dedicated to skill and upskill local women artisans in rural and peri-urban areas of Dadri block under ‘Dadri Development Program’, held at Chithera Gram Panchayat, the launch witnessed the participation of women SHG members (NRLM) and Shiksha Plus initiative beneficiaries. The event was honoured by distinguished guests including Shiv Nadar University faculty members, BDO officials, DDP core team members, and NGO partners.
