Exchange Student on Campus

FROM THE DEAN OF STUDENTS

April has been a busy month on and off campus as the snapshots of all the events and happenings in this edition remind us. It was a unique pleasure to have the founding family on campus at the beginning of this month. We cherish the lighter moments as well as life lessons they shared with such humility and candidness

Our new Student Council has hit the ground running, and it is heartening to see their involvement and commitment to their roles They are learning fast, and I am sure will go on to represent your interests effectively, in alignment with the values and vision of our founder

We have re-introduced room partner and room selection for the coming academic year To be eligible to participate, there are certain mandatory conditions that each of you must fulfil Otherwise, you will not be able to select room partners or rooms, and will have to accept what is assigned to you This is part of our ongoing emphasis on students learning to engage and take responsibility for outcomes Please read the relevant communications carefully and stay updated to avoid heartbreak and disappointment later As we approach the end of the Spring Semester 2024, with deadlines for projects and submissions, and the end semester exams just around the corner, some of you will be experiencing anxiety and stress to get it all done decently well in time. Here are a few thoughts that might make the task a little less daunting for those of you feeling overwhelmed.

Through millions of years of evolution, our brain is hardwired to look for threats, potential or immediate, and take evasive action This serves a valuable purpose when faced with predators, burning fires, rushing floods, crashing cars or any immediate physical threat to our safety

However, when we feel less than competent to negotiate daily challenges, our brains create countless “What if?” scenarios with imagined bad outcomes Be aware of thoughts that make you feel anxious and try shifting from “What if”, to “What is”

Assess the ground you have already covered and what is still missing or incomplete The missing bits will often be what you are most uncomfortable with and have been avoiding or putting off for too long It sounds so obvious, but we often spend too long on things we feel in control about and neglect the one subject or topic that we really need to brush up or get help understanding how to tackle.

There is a saying, “Knowledge is power.” Well, knowledge is not power; it is potential, because it is only when you act on knowledge you have that it can become power. We often accumulate more and more knowledge, read more books, and listen to more wise people, looking for some hack or magic formula that will set everything right for us

Instead, it is better to act upon what you know, making small changes and deliberately different choices every day There will be setbacks and disappointments and new challenges Ask what the situation can tell and teach you, what you could have done differently, and what the next best step might be Take that step You will learn with every effort and emerge more capable and confident each time you face and navigate a challenging situation

In less than a month, the Batch of 2024 will graduate from the University There will be mixed feelings and emotions as you look back on your journey at Shiv Nadar and at what lies ahead

As you step out into the wide world, we wish you all the very best and look forward to seeing you back on campus as Alumni of this wonderful institution.

All the very best to you all for the end semester exams and for a great semester break over the summer!
