Shiv Nadar University is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, student-centric and research university. It was set up in 2011 by the Shiv Nadar Foundation, a philanthropic foundation established by Mr. Shiv Nadar, founder of HCL. The university is on the quest to become a globally acclaimed centre for learning and innovation and is the youngest university to be recognised as an Institution of Eminence by the Govt. of India. Through its innovative curriculum and interdisciplinary focus, the university is bringing a paradigm shift in higher education in India. Enabling students to accomplish excellence in their Major while pursuing other academic interests through various options under a Minor, the university inculcates critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The university's source of strength lies in its distinctive feature to provide education in a broad range of disciplines and the ability to go into depth in a particular area.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY CURRICULUM
At the undergraduate level, the university offers combinations of Majors in chosen fields of study and Minors from many other disciplines.
Students at the university hail from 27 States and Union Territories in India and are selected through a rigorous admission process. The student body reflects diversity in culture, talent and perspective.
In the decade since its founding, the university has assembled an impressive team of faculty from various disciplines drawn from the top universities in India and across the world. Key advisors to government, famous authors, and thought leaders in multiple fields teach and guide students at the university.
The university focuses on research in its broadest sense: basic and applied research, interdisciplinary research, scholarly publications, and creative expression. The cornerstone of the university's academic mission is its emphasis on undergraduate research through its flagship Opportunities for Undergraduate (OUR) program.
The university provides an exciting space for character, community building, and exchange of ideas. Classroom discussions often continue to the central vista of the campus, the library cafeteria and the beautiful palm groves on campus.
All programs offered by the university are delivered on its fully residential, 286-acre green campus that provides all facilities and activities for a fine living.
The School of Natural Sciences (SNS) is integral to the university's vision to build an institution of global education standards. The School aims to provide an international ambience in a local setting with innovative and engaging teaching methods, globally benchmarked curricula, world-class faculty and key partnerships in research. The School has four Departments: Chemistry, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physics. It also nurtures the Big Data Analytics Center (BDAC), the Center for Advanced Materials, the Center for Informatics, the Institute for Innovations & Inventions with Mathematics & IT (IIIMIT) and the Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering (CESE). The undergraduate, master and doctoral programs have been designed based on the university's interdisciplinary and research-based learning philosophy.
A Bachelor of Science (Research) student, besides taking the School's major courses, is expected to take a broad range of courses from Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Management to fulfil the credit requirements of the undergraduate program at the university. State-of-the-art laboratories and computational facilities are established in the School, keeping in mind the international standards.
Students get an additional opportunity from the second year onwards to experience the rich, new knowledge that often exists at the interface of more than one discipline through a unique Opportunity for Undergraduate Research (OUR) program. Our undergraduate students have contributed extensively to research publications in reputed international journals. The university is registered with DSIR, Government of India, as a Research Institution, and all the departments at SNS have received DST-FIST (Improvement of Science & Technology Infrastructure) grants.
Dr. Sanjeev Galande joined the university as Dean of the School of Natural Sciences in June 2021. He brings over two decades of experience as a renowned cell biologist, epigeneticist and academic. Dr. Galande earlier served the Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER), Pune, as a Professor of Biology and Dean of Research and development. At IISER Pune, he led the Centre of Excellence in Epigenetics (CoEE) and assembled a team of scientists to study the evolution of epigenetic mechanisms using multiple model systems. The CoEE focuses on epigenetic modifications underlying various biologically important phenomena and their role in gene expression, regeneration, cancer, behaviour, ageing, and evolution. He is credited for establishing a multidisciplinary program engaged at the interface of biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, cell biology, proteomics, and genomics. He has previously also served the National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS) in Pune as a senior scientist, where he was part of a group that elucidated how cellular signalling pathways eventually exert their effect at the level of chromatin to orchestrate cell-type-specific patterns of gene expression. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Indian Institute of Science in 1996. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the USA from 1996-2001, he studied the role of MAR-binding proteins in tumorigenesis. Dr. Galande was the recipient of the International Senior Research Fellowship, Wellcome Trust, UK, 2005-10, DBT National Bioscience Award 2006, DST Swarnajayanti Fellowship 2007, the coveted CSIR Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2010, GD Birla Award for Scientific Excellence 2015, and the SERB JC Bose Fellowship 2019. He has been a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences since 2010, of the Indian National Science Academy since 2012, and of the National Academy of Sciences since 2017. Dr. Galande was an honorary associate faculty at the University of Sydney, Australia, and a visiting faculty at the University of Turku, Finland.

Laboratory experiments are thoughtfully designed so that students handle modern analytical instrumentation and equipment, preparing them for careers in both academic research and industry. At every level, the undergraduate program is designed to meet and exceed the standards required for UGC and ACS (American Chemical Society) accreditation. The year-long Senior Project allows undergraduate students in-depth immersion in a chosen original research project. In addition to advanced laboratory experience, students acquire communication skills by presenting their research at intramural and national conferences and, in many cases, publishing their findings in research journals.
Our research labs also welcome interested students from other departments in collaborative projects, and many of our students perform part of their research in labs of other departments and interdisciplinary centres. Such collaborations often reach beyond the campus and link research at Shiv Nadar University with internship opportunities in the chemical industry and national laboratories.

It is true that since Physics is a fundamental science, it takes time for the latest results to be passed on to society. However, it may be no exaggeration to say that its impact on civilisation has been enormous. For example, the design of computer infrastructure would be impossible without knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid-state physics, and the theory of relativity is essential for precisely determining an individual's position in a GPS. In recent years, apart from traditional collaborations with engineering, there have been solid interdisciplinary research activities in close cooperation with biologists, chemists, and mathematicians to solve problems in various fields.
The Physics Department at Shiv Nadar University started its journey in 2011. The mission of the Department is to conduct outstanding research with national and international recognition by promoting creativity, excellence, and collaboration. Our major focus areas of research are materials science, condensed matter physics, computational and mathematical physics, particle and astroparticle physics, astrophysics, and soft matter physics, including fundamental and applied research.
A critical mission of the Department is to deliver excellent teaching and mentoring for physics enthusiasts. We provide students with a holistic, up-to-date, comprehensive curriculum to cultivate inquisitiveness and excitement about the physical world, including our platform for engineering students to engage in problem-solving skills. In addition to our well-organised introduction to physics fundamentals, we provide opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students to engage in scientific research. We maintain a sufficient and healthy level of funds from the university and external funding agencies, which enables us to support our Ph.D. students. Furthermore, we actively create interdisciplinary collaborations and various outreach activities. Our teaching program benefits not only students who aspire to become future researchers in Physics but also those who aim to acquire the methods and ideas of Physics and work in engineering or other related fields in our society.
