STREET LIVES IN A BLOCK This project is a Public-Private Partnership project with a school, residential units and public programs in it. It aims to improve the current condition of the Chelsea site by using the alphabet massing system. After studying the site, we found several problems and decide to solve them through the following design strategies. Condensing urban programs and Layer them, Three-Dimensional circulation network, Themed partition of ground landscape topography. Visually connect the block to the neighboring High Line. Besides, this design uses the alphabet massing strategy to offer a high-density multi-units housing with plenty of light access and open spaces. By writing our own alphabets with this system, we could not only adjust the massing with current urban context but also let enough sunlight to go through and get to the ground. Last but not least, by using multi-residential unit modules we offer high-density neighborhoods with enough shared open spaces for the community in the block.

Alphabet Massing Strategy We use the Alphabet Massing Strategy to contain the network circulation system with Art Loop in the residential layers. It could offer a high-density multi-units housing with plenty of light access and open spaces. Louver system covers the residential part and it allows to rotate to maintain the best lighting environment. We have tested different letters and layout of letters through cloud-based computing software to verify the best environmental performance combination. Besides, we also using software to analyze ventilation condition through the alphabet to determine the location of operable windows. By writing our own letters and arranging the alphabet, we could find a balance with FAR and light condition. And this could become a system that could apply to other metropolitan sites. We could develop high rise or middle rise residential prototypes that show different dwelling compositions with their corresponding variation of volumes and landscape.

From the Section, we layered programs with the order of existing programs but vertically. Residential on the top, open floor in the middle and Elementary school + Art Gallery on the bottom. The Art loop that start from the gallery weave through the residential ( showing as red ). Those shop front space could help artist who living in this block to show and sell their artwork. Meanwhile it enrichs the experiences in residential space.
10
The Roof of the ground level, which is occupied by the elementary school and art gallery, is also the portico of the open floor. It is constructed with market infrastructure and it allows the street artist could exhibit and sell the artwork, just like the artist on the High Line. And all of this could become multiple traction points that draw attention to the visitor from the Chelsea Park. Besides it also becomes a branch of the High Line that allows visitors to explore the site and also connect to the front park.
11
The Sixth Facade As we bring in and bring up the Chelsea Park, the ground floor becomes dynamic. Terrains and ramps occupy the in between space from the fingers which is school located. The ultimate height of ground floor is exactly the height of the High Line, which helps to guide the view from the Frame. The ground topography is divided into 4 different themed parks. It includes Listening, where the school could hold an outdoor class; Playing, where kids could play ball games like Basketball or Tennis. Exhibition, where Art Gallery could extend their exhibition to outdoor terrain; Multifunctioning, where it could hold a Conference or a Fashion T-stage Show or becomes a part of the Art Gallery.

CELESTIAL IMPLANTATION In China, with the situation of ever-growing population growth and the land shortage, The demanding of the residential district at the urban gradually increased. However, modern residential district contributes little to the community interactions, and also lacks delightful scenery viewing space. The design took fully the advantage of current resources around the site that adjoined to the urban river as well as landscape park along the river. Extended the precious urban green space from three dimension. The facade of the whole area derived from the sculpt of mountain, connected the low-rise residence and the high-rise residence and controlled the height of the buildings organizationally. Used the semi-enclosed form of the frontier commercial complex as reference, applied it into the residential district and created place of community communication through four semi-enclosed group.

Divided the area into 2 districts to create a passageway leading to the river for both visual viewing and traffic
Interlaced the four stripe of building to avoid the sight block and to provide more scenery for the habitant
Encircled the four semi-enclosed aggregations to build space for community communication and interaction
Activated the enclosed group by swing the boundaries and improved the daylighting hours
15
Green Space Extension The landscape along the river usually becomes connection of urban greening system, exploited the space along the river as landscape stripe. The site of this design happen to located at a riverbank park in Tianjin, so the priority mission was to fully utilize the natural resources surrounded the base. Besides, open space for the residents to relax and play is also indispensable, it provides recreational areas for residents and helps to enhance the beauty and environmental quality of neighborhoods. Extended the green space into the entire plan of the site, then implanted plants in vertical direction and formed the original concept. The platform that covering soil to carry the green plants provides a celestial space which could be utilized for scenery viewing and for communication with neighbors.

Planning Outline The 26 ha site area should satisfy the demand of commerce, dwelling and office. As a result, the three buildings of commercial center are located front to the street. At the interior region arranged four residential congregated group and implanted community complexes at the outer flank of each groups. The community complex contains various function including Health Center, Convenience Stores, Banks, Nursing Home, Medical Station, Child-care Center, Kindergarten, Youth Center and Small-sized Gymnasium.
17
Residence Type Analysis At the distribution of the residence types, implemented diversity design to satisfied various demand of different people. Set the office and residence as main function of type in low-rise building area. People from all the types could entered the celestial garden by walk under 2 levels. Arranged vertical transportation core every 35 meters in this large span residence architecture. Minority of types possess its own vertical stairs connected to the garden or the other types.
Holistic Approach During the planning of the project, divided the base site into two zones, the west one and the east one. The central of this residential district resembled the canyon that lead the people from outside the district stepped into and reached the river landscape park. The double zones are close to the symmetrical and each zone was consisted by two semi-enclosed aggregated group. The opening orientated to the central landscape. Buildings in the groups set the tunnel hole at the ground floor so as to connect the outsides or the other group. The tendency sculpt of district facade mutate the form of mountain, gradually declined the height from the flanks to the center and dramatically climbed at the central area. Interlacing the parallel high-rise residence to insure the adequate daylighting and to open the wonderful horizon of the inside buildings.

FROM CORE TO HEART In this art gallery design, based on the principle of harmony with the environment, surrounding situation of the site could be investigated and analyzed firstly. The location of the site is adjacent to the urban central square. The square is not only provide the insufficient city green space, but it also plays the role of transfer stop to converge and disperse people. In this sense, I tried to transplant this function into the art gallery, arranged the courtyard space as the core of the architecture, in order to attract the pedestrian flow to converge at the core and then spread the traveler flow into the heart of the architecture. Besides, the circular architecture could also preserve an existing tree at the center of this site. The tree could also be the visual center of this building that guide citizen to walk in the courtyard.

Process of Experience The whole process of the experience is divided into two sections. At the first section, people experienced starting from the open space of urban square, after stepped into the narrow space of the street, finally through the tunnel space gathered at the core of the architecture. At this point, one could get a clue of the general shape of this gallery so that they could choose their visiting way. The second section begin from the courtyard, after entering the semi-open space of the vitreous lobby, individual eventually enclosed by the solid architectural space, which is the invisible heart space of the gallery. Visitors could directly get into the permanent exhibition area or step in the temporary exhibition area, or just listening a lecture in the public auditorium. Two sections of the experience reappeared the role of the square to the city.

ALTERATION OF ETERNITY Chicago is a unique city for its modernization and historical standing. Within this metropolis, complex interweave happened between systems. As the time goes by, some of the systems have been demolished and some have been renovated. Infrastructure system and building system are one of them. The bridges that lie on Chicago river have spanned there for decades although the city buildings and landscape changes over years. This inspired me of thinking eternity and transience in this city. In this site, a hybrid library will be erected at the intersection of Upper Wacker Dr and Lake St. One of the challenges is to connect complex multiple levels around this corner. There are 3 transportation levels, including Lower Wacker Dr, Riverwalk level, Upper Wacker Dr, and Metro Line level above the ground.

Infrastructure Platforms The principle of this design is creating infrastructural structure platforms that would allow maximum flexibility for the interior function and also keep the possibility of future renovation. Newly functioned masses would add to the library to satisfy the requirement of society. To accommodate the contemporary housing problem in the downtown area of Chicago, currently, those masses are mostly apartment. In terms of the library, It is a place that not only for reading or research, it should meet the increased need for social, interaction, practice, and expression. Those functions are embedded in masses that could be hanging or stacking on platforms which would be the main reading space in the library. And these masses could be added or subtracted due to the function requirement changes based on time. In this way, this infrastructure-liked city Library could last long enough (like the bridges) to serve the public as a hybrid architecture.

Perception of the City After 1900 Chicago pollution abatement of Lake Michigan, the city has been raised about 3 meters. This give the city intricate and interesting multiple levels that could alleviate the ground traffic problem. So it is important to help people perceive the multiple level structure . Using stairs and escalator guide visitors flow from Upper Wacker Dr either to the Riverwalk level or going up to the hybrid library. Another strategy to perceive this city is to stretch out housing units. Due to the Chicago downtown area is build in grid manner, it is hard to see this city from the building that lie in the grid. The best way is to break the grid from the sky, by stretching and interlacing units, the resident could get different viewing angle of this city. Every unit could perceive (peep) the street or the riverside view from their own corner of the house.
