6. THE RECONSTRUCTION OF OFFICE OFFICE
01 A Specialty Store for Textiles Interior Design
Design Concept
Design Brief Since my undergraduate major is textile design, I always need to buy pieces of cloth as materials and thus cloth stores becomes a place I visit frequently in my spare time. When I visit cloth stores, I found that domestic cloth stores have many problems in their function and layout. Thus, through further investigation and survey and the study on the traditional Chinese cloth printing and dyeing technology and its characteristics, I adopt the concept of “being tender and natural and try to solve the existing problems of the cloth store by changing the way of dis- play and layout. Meanwhile, advantages of existing cloth stores worth keeping are retained in the new design. Through improvement and extension, I aim to create a sale store for textiles that is well-organized, simple and cozy.
Through visiting existing physical cloth stores, I found that due to the limitation of store area, the owner would habitually pile up rolls of piece goods on the counter. Although a large amount of piece goods can be stored in this way, it is not good for displaying textures and decorative patterns of cloths. Thus, I try to make a change on this traditional, conventional way of display in the new design by unfolding pieces of cloth, making them dis- played in a more intuitional way.

GuQin and Architecture Based on research which exploring the relationship between Guqin and cathedral, I divide the building into three segments, which are corresponded with three tone colors of Guqin:
” Being depressed”, “Pouring out”, and “Being suddenly enlightened”
02 A Building Inspired by Guqin,a Seven-Stringed Plucked Instrument
Design Brief The feeling I get when playing guqin and the experience of my visiting Romanesque churches make me come to understand the subtle connection between sound and architecture. In this design, I try to transform the transition and change of different scales of guqin into three emotional keynotes, “being depressed” - “pouring out” - “being suddenly enlightened”, so as to establish a narrative physical space with the help of different design languages and give it speci c functions, making it be- come a public buildings.
Concept From playing guqin to understanding it, this musical instrument soothes my tension and uneasiness, enabling me to slow down in my high-paced life. When I visited Romanesque churches, I also experienced a similar feeling of peace and harmony. The solemn and symmetrical layout and the large scale of those churches give people a sense of deterrence. It seems that there is a fantastic connection between music and architecture. Therefore, I try to create a space that is, in a sense, similar to the Romanesque church and to convey the sound, rhythm and emotion of guqin through it.

03 PLAY, RELAX AND FUN SPACE
Design Brief This apartment is designed for six-month stayed people, and it is created to relax and have a rest. The inspiration is from the moment when we stayed in the apartment, we are used to ignoring the scenery of the space instead of watching the smartphone. On the contrast, when I visited Richard Serra’s exhibition, I found the surface of sculpture shaped the inside space so that it creates interesting view. So that I was exploring how the surface of sculpture shaped the inside space which could create a fantastic sight. By inspired Mobius Strip that has different curved patterns, I would shaped the sights of window with the constraction, so that this space could be replaxing studio where people would have difference views with standing in different positiones.

04 BAKERY WITH COFFEE SHOP
Design Brief The project is redesigning a shop to be new bakery with coffee shop. Based on the research about the different types of function, I tend to create a cosy space for the group and individual with analysing the ergonomics to create the most confortable distance. Furthermore, the multifunctional furniture is the key element in the space to manage the group area where people could have group activities. Besides, for individual, people could be in a constant state of relaxation and enjoyment.

05 FUTHER FUNITURE
Design Brief
This project is to design a table which favour the “food-selfieholic”. That is, for the people much easier, more convenient to take photos of their meal before having it. As far as we know that, it is a very popular trend/living habits, no matter what the age is. In this project, we tried to narrow the scope to look at specif- ic user type. They are, teenagers and students from the age of 11 to 20. In this project, we will explore the target users’ daily habits, physical behaviour as well as the relationship between emotional and physical comfort conditions. We found that there were many reasons for the target users to do such an activity (tak- ing photos of their meal before having it). For instance, to take photos as a memory of how nice the food they are having, to share the nice food on the internet instantly with their family and friends, and some to take a nice photo of the food just to fulfilling their emotional comfort. The project will show three different scenarios of how the current chosen user generate different activ- ities from the furniture (table). Scenario 1 will show the formal activity which include the three students are having meal together in a formal way. Scenario 2 will show the motion of the students rotating the table to make the food face towards themselves. Sce- nario 3 will show the motion of the the middle part of the table lifting up and the food become closer and easier for them to take photos. Site Analysis Through the study on this kind of real estate project, I find that there is a contradiction between the high demand of people working in the office area for convenient services and the long distance between people and facilities for the convenience. Thus, to white-collar workers who need convenient services, their experience of enjoying the services is affected by the time and distance. Moreover, shops scattered in the office area make the flow line disordered, which goes against the development of these shops. Meanwhile, the distance between the building area and the green belt reduces the degree of people’s intimacy to green plants.

Office Hour
Analysis: 1. Apart from having a cup of tea and answering the phone, white-collar workers spend most of their time working at desk; 2. if they need beverage or foods, they do not have enough time to go off the building to buy them.

It is a unit used to indicate the quantities of demands
Analysis: 1. the demand is greatest for the vending machine, green plants and the area for answering the phone; the demand is moderate for the area for rest and the coffee house; the demand is smallest for ATM, the small-sized restaurant and sports and leisure.

In the building area of this kind of Soho-themed project, shops are mainly located on the basement. In such a building area where shops are integrated in the office area, the farthest straightline distance between a shop and people is 320 meters. This indicates that people working in the office area need to spent more time to get convenient services.
Analysis: 1. since there is no restaurant in the building, people working in the building need to go off to find one, which needs 30 minutes at least. If the weather is bad, it will take 1 hour. 2. Part of the white-collar workers will choose to order the take-off, but if they have their meals in the working area, it will have a negative effect on the office environment. 3. The working time is too long, and many workers can only spend their midday rest on their sits.
Frequency of Utilization After the reconstruction
Answering the Phone Sleep Rest and Leisure Breathing the Air Coffee and Rest Catering
A unit like this is equal to 20 minutes. It indicates the frequency of utilization..
As it is shown in the chart, people go to the area for answering the phone, the area for rest and the small-sized restaurant everyday but go to the coffee house, use the vending machine and enjoy green plants infrequently.
The Original Building: 1.The division of the office area and shops ensures the reduction of the flow of people in the office area, providing the office area with a quiet and peaceful environment. 2.The degree of people’s intimacy to green plants is low. 3.Since retail shops for the convenience are not located inside the office building, when people working in the building are in need, they have to go off the building to buy things they need.
After the reconstruction: 1. Green plants added inside the office building can increase the degree of people’s intimacy to green plants. 2. Retail outlets for the convenience are integrated into the office building, which can reduce the time spent by people on buying things. 3. Shops in the office building are rearranged, which can facilitate the circulation of the flow of people.

The survey on the demands for all kinds of convenient services and the numbers of people using them finds that the demand is greatest for green plants, the area for answering the phone, restaurant, vending machine, area for rest, and the coffee house. The area of each functional zone is redistributed based on the numbers of people using them. By setting 3.5 square meters as a unit area, each zone is designed as a cubic box with different areas. By setting an office building as an integral whole, three floors as a unit, the functional zones are distributed on each floor based on the utilization frequency of each zone.

Solution
Each floor is seen as a unit. The external walls are gradually rotated in angle, and the overhangs are used to block the sunlight for the next floor.
Green plants are grown on the overhangs of the facade to further block the sunlight.
