How to Pack for Moving Day It Takes Time Moving from one home to another is often one of the most stressful times in a person’s life. From planning the move to the actual day, it’s important that anyone about to embark on this journey be prepared and be prepared early on. At Shleppers Moving & Storage, we recommend that families and individuals planning a move start their preparations as early as six weeks in advance. Early planning will not only make the actual move smoother, but will help you save on time and money in the long run. Schedule a Mover Making an appointment with a reputable moving company is imperative when it comes to moving. While it may seem cheaper to ask friends or relatives for their help, a professional service will know how to quickly and effectively transport a large load without any mishaps. When you are scheduling a mover, take into consideration your actual moving date. During peak seasons or on the weekends when demands for vans and trucks are at their highest, it’s important you reserve days (ideally weeks) in advance to secure your spot and at the best rates possible. Stay Organized Staying organized will help you navigate through the chaos of the move. Some helpful ways of organizing before you pack include: ● Keep a Binder of Contracts and a List of Valuables: Keeping track of the everyday documents you will need to transition into your new home is imperative to staying organized during the big day. These documents can include moving contracts, rental agreements, birth certificates or copies of utility bills. Additionally, creating a list of the valuable you are packing will help you account for them after the move. ● Survey the Rooms: Before you begin packing, survey the room and organize items into the following categories: keep, sell, donate, trash. Separating your items into these categories will help you get a better since of how much and what needs to be actually packed away. Packing The most tedious part of the moving process, packing often requires the most amount of time and causes the most amount of stress. While it may seem easier to simply throw everything into boxes, being a smart packer can greatly ease your stress during your move. Depending on the size of your room, it’s often recommended that you begin packing two to three weeks before the moving date.

● Box Infrequently Used Items First: Start by packing the items you don’t use on a daily basis first. Avoiding over packing the boxes, as additional weight can increase chances of breakage or improper handling during the move. ● Label, Color Code or Number Moving Boxes Based on Room: Labeling your boxes will help movers know where to place them in your new home. Be sure to clearly mark boxes as “fragile” when applicable. ● Dealing with Large Furniture: Wrap large furniture like drawers or refrigerators with plastic wrap to keep them from getting scratched or damaged during the move. Wrapping furniture will also protect it from dirt and grime. ● Dealing with Valuable or Small Objects: When packing delicate objects, keep them safe by wrapping them in bubble wrap or soft cloth. Be sure to pack them in small, easy to carry boxes. ● Everyday Items: Keep essentials (like scissors, paper towels, tape) in a clear plastic bin. During and after the move, the bin will give you quick access to the things you immediately need. ● Electronics: Before you pack away your electronics, take a picture of your current wire configuration so you remember how everything should be connected. ● Weight Distribution: When packing a box, be sure to pack heavier items at the bottom and keep lighter items on top. It’s often a misconception to pack heavier items in larger boxes. Avoid doing this as it makes the box more difficult to carry.
