Packing Tips for Moving to a New Home

Moving to a new home can be very stressful, but if you pack wisely, you can at least make the unpacking part more enjoyable. The act of moving is stressful even if you have cheap movers to help you get everything to the new place, but moving also means starting over, which can be an immense relief, sometimes. Use some of the tips below to help make this transition not just easier, but more fun. 1. Hire a moving company. If you have a moving company in place to help you get your things to the new place, you take a great amount of stress off of yourself. This also means you can focus on getting things packed up, instead of worrying about getting them to the new place. 2. Make yourself a care package. You can avoid some of the chaos that comes with unpacking if you make yourself a care package to use while you are unpacking. This should include the things that make you comfortable, like your favorite coffee cup, an iPod to listen to while you unpack, soothing tea like chamomile, a tea pot, or coffee, coffee pot and filters, and maybe a phone book or fliers for the nearest pizza place, so you don't have to cook right away. Be sure to leave this box out as you pack, so you can throw last minute items like your toothbrush and cell phone charger in it. You can either take this one box with you, or have the moving company put this one box on the counter when they get to the new house. 3. Take time out for spiritual needs. Whether you believe in energy, Catholicism, or any other spiritual domain, try to have your religious items ready for use. There may be no better way for you to start your new life off right than by blessing your house in some way, or smudging it, depending on your own spiritual beliefs. These things are supposed to be done before you unpack anything and set up your home, allowing you to have a fresh start in more ways than one in your new place. 4. Don't just pack by room. Many people simply pack things up and label the boxes for each room. This at least is a bit helpful to you and your movers, but you can add a bit of detail to make it even easier on yourself. Use labels like “kitchen/cupboard” or “kitchen/utensils,” so you can easily find what you need. If you have a child, this is the perfect job for them to do while you are packing. 5. Mark large items for movers. There are some things that are not going to be “packed,” but still have to be moved. For example, if you have a large mirror, you can write a note on the mirror in dry erase marker so the movers know where the mirror goes. The dry erase marker easily wipes off, later, but in the meantime your movers know where to put the mirror.
