THE LONG DISTANCE MOVE! TIPS AND HELPFUL HINTS
MOVING CAN REALLY SUCK‌ Every kind of move is stressful, time consuming, and physically exhausting. But a long distance move demands a unique set of skills.
It is a huge change in your life to relocate yourself to a different state or even across the country.
•
We have put together a couple ideas to help make this big ordeal easier and maybe even fun!
KNOW WHERE YOU ARE MOVING! Are you moving into a big city with little parking? Are you moving to a small town that snows a lot? How much space are you going to have? Before you even pick up the first moving box you need to plan! Weather. Your new lifestyle. Vehicle requirements.
* Extra tip: Got pets? Every city and state has different requirements for your little paw pal. Double check local laws about leashes or inoculations.
LET’S SIFT THROUGH YOUR STUFF! You will want to pack the important items, obviously, but what about everything else? For things you are on the fence about use the “ONE YEAR RULE”. If you haven’t used it in one year maybe you could
donate it or sell it in a yard sale. •
There are four categories to sort your stuff into:
Keep
Donate
Sell Trash
Let’s box this house up! Okay so you know what’s going with you. Now you have two options, which have their own pros and cons. •
Packing it yourself:
•

do the packing, they are also

professionals. They are more

from breaking and keeping your boxes organized.
Stay on time! There are so many things to schedule during a long distance move. Make a list of all the things that need to get done. Then make a calendar of everything on your list. You’ll be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to manage when it’s written down in front of you.
Don’t do it alone! During the moving process have all your friends and family help you. Let them lend a hand as you pack, paint the walls back to its original color, or host a yard sale.
* Extra tip: Don’t forget to give everyone your
new
address, or at least get
everyone’s emails and addresses, so that when the holidays come around you still get those heartwarming cards!
And now on to your car! Do you have a car? What are you doing with it? Will you need it in your new city? If you are going to be taking your car definitely consider driving it to your new home. Shipping automobiles can be a complete nightmare. Companies that do this usually require at least a one-month notice and they usually can’t guarantee an arrival date.
Pre-planning is the key! Start the whole process early so you don’t have to pull your hair out. Make your lists, calendars, and preparations early. Also, remember that once you get there it’ll take a bit of time to acclimate to your new home. Give yourself the chance to settle in.
Extra tip: To make unpacking easier number all your boxes and keep a short list of what is in everything. It can be a lifesaver when you can find the can opener in less than two hours!
