THANK YOU! These past few weeks have been like no other. We were challenged, tested and pushed, yet with the help of our volunteers, our community angels, we kept our services up and running. Pesach came and so did the outpouring of even more support from our volunteer angels. You offered before we asked, you worked tirelessly even as we had limited space in which to work. You worked non-stop until Pesach to package meals, matzah and grape juice, and prepare seder plates. You donned the masks, rolled on the gloves and kept your distance with a focus on the task at hand. Words cannot express our appreciation. Thank you on behalf of our community. BIKUR CHOLIM RESPONDS TO COVID 19 Bikur Cholim has applied innovative measures to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in our community. Thank you to all our donors who made these services possible. We must have the community’s continued support to implement them further. Bikur Cholim: Continues, under Sherry Nussbaum’s dedicated coordination, to deliver meals to those who are unable to cook. Shops for the home-bound and for those with anxiety, or other disorders. Operates a buddy system to care for seniors and others with vulnerabilities. Entertains seniors via zoom meetings and conference calls with our senior program director, Esther Basser. Maintains a comprehensive list for follow up calls to those in serious distress, in addition to weekly calls to isolated seniors. Assists vulnerable community members to access government benefits. Over Pesach and Shabbat, we: Provided transportation to and from hospitals for patients who were unable to access public transportation. Distributed sandwiches, in conjuction with ECHO, to front-line hospital workers, conveying a message of support from the Jewish community. As the COVID-19 situation continues, we, the undersigned rabbis of COR’s Executive Rabbinical Board would like to reiterate the critical importance of following the social distancing and other guidelines as outlined by the respective health authorities without compromise. We know that it is difficult because we gain so much strength from Jewish communal life, but it seems clear that, for now, the ratzon Hashem (Gd’s will) is that we demonstrate our community’s strength by staying at home. We thank all of the COR certified food service establishments for implementing the required social distancing guidelines and to consumers for their compliance. Your continued adherence to these protocols is keeping us all safer and is of the utmost importance. We are mindful of how challenging it must be for our city’s kosher establishments to operate in the current conditions. Please support them during these difficult times. We have also been asked for our respective positions regarding individuals operating minyanim in their homes, in backyards or even in parks. As we and senior rabbis have previously stated, during the current COVID-19 crisis, individuals do not have an obligation to daven in a minyan or perform other communal obligations that would necessitate gathering together. We do however have an obligation to safeguard our lives - v’nishmartem meod l’nafshoseychem - and those of our neighbours around us. This means heeding the advice of medical professionals regarding social distancing and other guidelines that have been enacted in order to save lives. Unless the current situation changes, we the undersigned rabbis are not and would not participate in these minyanim and we ask others to follow our example. We are particularly sensitive to those who have lost a loved one and have an obligation to recite kaddish. Indeed some of the undersigned rabbis are in that very position. But rest assured, it would be a great honour for the departed neshama to protect the lives of those of us who may be vulnerable to this disease and continue to daven at home. We can also create an aliyah for the neshama by learning mishnayos or performing other meaningful mitzvos. These are difficult times. The world needs our prayers. Hashem hears our heartfelt prayers from home. As Dovid Hamelech wrote in Tehillim (Psalms): Ashrei Yoshvei Veysecha, Od Y’halleluka, Selah -- Happy are they who dwell in Your house; they will praise You, always. Now is the time for us to offer our praise from home, in our mikdash me’at. And through those prayers, may we turn our homes into dwelling places for Hashem until such time that we merit a return to our shuls and the ultimate return of us all to Yerushalayim to dwell with Hashem in the rebuilt Beis Hamikdash.
