It has been ten very medically challenging months since our precious daughter was born after years of waiting and a very complicated pregnancy. She continues to defy medical odds. When our Rav instructed us to make a seudas hodaah with a minyan, the obvious choice was Kollel Chatzos, as they have been learning and davening for Ahuva Bracha for more than a year.
EVERY MIDNIGHT
the distinguished talmidei chachomim of Kollel Chatzos gather in locations across the globe. During the darkest hours, when the rest of the world sleeps, they immerse themselves in vibrant Torah learning, bringing zechusim and yeshuos to klal yisroel.
The seudah took place in the Monsey kollel at 1 am with the entire Kollel and numerous guests in attendance. Immediately thereafter the talmidei chachomim continued their nightly learning. It was such a beautiful and meaningful way to give thanks to Hashem! It gives us tremendous strength and hope knowing that the kollel members have her in mind every night.

CRISIS: Over 71% of non-frum Jews in North America are intermarrying and approximately 90% of Jews are not Shomer Torah U’mitzvos. What can we do to help?
(In 1950 the intermarriage rate was 6% and in 1970 it was 17%. Today far more Jews believe that having a good sense of humor is essential to their Jewish identity rather than observing Jewish law — 42% compared to 19%.)
SOLUTION: Do Kiruv QUESTION: Is there a Torah obligation on every individual to do kiruv? YES! In fact there are a number of chiyuvim involved. Here are just a few of the mekoros that obligate us to do our part in kiruv.
V’ahavta Lirei’acha Kamocha: Rav Chaim Volozhin based on the Rambam explains the Mishnah in Pirkei Avos “Oheiv es habrios u’m’karvan l’Torah,” love people and bring them closer to Torah, that the greatest act of Ahavah is to bring someone closer to Torah. Torah and a relationship with H-shem are the greatest possessions. If we love someone we want them to have the most important thing in life. Hashavas Aveida: The Chofetz Chaim explains that if we must return a lost object to its owner, it’s a kal v’chomer that if he has lost out on his relationship with the Torah his eternal connection to the Ribono Shel Olam we must surely try to return it. Ahavas H-shem: In the Sefer Hamitzvos, the Rambam explains that part of the Mitzvah of Loving H-shem is getting others to love Him also. If one truly loves H-shem, he would want to tell everyone about H-shem as we learn from Avraham Avinu. The Sefer Chareidim (Perek 68) quotes the Zohar that the reward of someone who is mekareiv people is unfathomable. Kiddush H-shem: Chazal tell us that everything H-shem created is for Kavod Shamayim. When H-shem’s glory is challenged, certainly we must do something about it. The Rambam in Sefer Hamitzvos describes Kiddush H-shem as “l’farsam ha’emunah hazos ha’amitis b’olam” to publicize this truthful belief system throughout the world. Lo Saamod Al Dam Rei’echa: Don’t stand idle over your brother’s blood. If you see someone drowning, you have an obligation to save them. The Shlah Hakodesh make a kal vachomer that if you need to save someone who is physically drowning, how much more so for one who is spiritually drowning.

Harbatzas Hatorah: The Gemara (Bava Metzia 85a) writes that H-shem is mevatel a gezeirah for someone who teaches Torah to the child of an am haaretz. Kol Yisroel Areivim Zeh Lazeh: Jews are guarantors one to another. So if you are not keeping a mitzvah it is my responsibility to help. This is because the Jewish People are one. We are all cells in the body of Klal Yisroel. Hence we can be motzei one another in kiddush, etc. Hocheach tochiach es amisecha: This doesn’t mean that we should go around reprimanding people as H-shem’s minister of truth. It means, as the Rambam explains, that you care enough about another person that they don’t hurt themselves. It requires sensitivity and judgment, how and when. It requires that we don’t embarrass anyone and that you speak b’nachas and that he feels it’s for his benefit. This pasuk also teaches that we need to correct others, otherwise we carry their sin. The Chofetz Chaim explains that when we die H-shem may say to us “Why didn’t you keep Shabbos, learn Torah, and wash Netilas yadayim?” You’re going to think “What’s going on, I did all that?!” Unless you tried to correct those who didn’t keep the Mitzvos, you will carry their sin. Every Jew is a guarantor for each other. Hachzakas Hatorah: The Shaarei Teshuva quotes the Talmud Yerushalmi that Arur asher lo yakim.. includes someone who can strengthen people to perform Torah U’mitzvos and does not do so. Ohr L’Goyim: We are meant to be a light unto the nations of the world, that brings all people to the recognition of Hakadosh Baruch Hu and to His service. We entered into a bris at Har Sinai that we would keep this commitment as an am. But how brightly can the light of Klal Yisrael burn for the nations of the world, if most of its members are lost to assimilation? The greatest benefit to getting involved in Kiruv is that it changes you. Whether it is understanding the ikarei emunah or hashkafos hachaim that you become familiar with, or whether it is the Ahavas Yisroel that is generated by reaching out to Acheinu Kol Beis Yisroel, your life and your family’s life will be forever enriched. You are giving yourself the greatest gift. Additionally you will IY”H merit Divine blessing, as many of the gedolim have said, when H-shem sees that you are taking care of His children, He will take care of you and your children - midah k’neged midah. A great Chasidisha Rebbe once said that just as the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed through Sinas Chinum - baseless hatred, the Beis Hamikdash will be rebuilt through Ahavas Chinam - unconditional love. All it takes is a small act of Ahavas Yisrael to reach out and make a difference.

Although kids may be home for summer break, most parents work throughout the summer months. This can lead to kids spending a significant amount of time left to their own devices (literally). Make sure kids get some fresh air with sports and extra-curricular activities that don’t involve computers and gadgets. Children nowadays face health risks like sleep deprivation and obesity due to lack of physical exercise. The lack of homework can be used as an opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children in a positive way. Children who have positive relationships with their parents are a lot less likely to seek unhealthy digital content.
