Necessary Medical Center Gains Traction in Israel “It is a 45 minute drive and she is losing blood fast. Let’s leave NOW.” “But sir, isn’t there a closer hospital to Beit Shemesh or something? Maybe there’s a doctor nearby who can treat my daughter and stop the blood??” “I wish there was, but what your daughter needs is a blood transfusion to resupply her with blood, and there is no place near here that can provide that for her. You’ll have to hang tight. Let’s go.” My rav and close family friend, Rav Benjy Kwalwasser, was a witness to the tragic scene of this little girl who was hit by a car on her street in Beit Shemesh. The end of the story is heartbreaking. Due to the long distance to Yerushalayim, which is the nearest hospital to Beit Shemesh, this precious neshama was reunited with its Creator after too short a time in the world. That is not the only story.

Stillbirths, deaths, and lifelong defects are the result of no hospital in Beit Shemesh. We have an opportunity now to raise the level of medical care in Israel and specifically in the Beit Shemesh area, both in quality and quantity, and to save lives.

The current population of over 200,000 residents in Beit Shemesh and the surrounding area is predicted to double over the coming decade. The closest hospital is 45 minutes away and there is no well-equipped 24/7 urgent care center. There are multiple roadside and home births every month, and, as you have just read, there have been fatalities, as a result. A Beit Shemesh hospital is desperately needed, and that is why Rav Benjy Kwalwasser created Israel Medical Centers together with Dr. Efraim Rosenbaum. Executive Director Rav Eliyahu Cohen is working closely with doctors and professionals to make this exciting initiative a reality. IMC has partnered with Terem Urgent Care Center in order to upgrade the facility currently helping out the community and is working on bringing OB/GYN services, a CT Scan and MRI, a Dialysis Center and more to the local urgent care center. IMC has already brought a bilirubin machine to Beit Shemesh and has received certification to transport a CT scan into the facility. This is all to serve the immediate need. Concurrently, IMC is working toward the first ever hospital to Beit Shemesh. May our efforts to bring better and more accessible medical care to our brothers and sisters in Beit Shemesh prove fruitful, so that together, we can begin to save lives. 1. Slurpees Be sure to double check that your flavour of choice is listed on the COR Canadian Slurpee List. If it is not, then it may not be kosher. It is further recommended to verify the kashrus of the flavour by requesting permission to check the label on the box of syrup that is connected to the Slurpee machine.

2. Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt & Ices There are several options for kosher ice cream, frozen yogurt and ices. If you are adhere to the requirements of Cholov Yisroel then you must be sure to purchase packaged products that bear a reliable kosher certification and are marked with the Cholov Yisroel designation. Soft ice cream designated as Cholov Yisroel is available at several COR certified stores and restaurants. The Inside Scoop at Bathurst and Lawrence is COR certified and its designation is not Cholov Yisroel. We recommend that consumers purchase ice cream and frozen yogurt from kosher certified establishments that are supervised by a mashgiach and not from stores that are unsupervised, especially in situations where it is not possible to verify the kashrus status of each product independently. Ices that bear the DE designation are dairy equipment which means that they are pareve but have been pasteurized on equipment that was previously used to cook dairy product that is not Cholov Yisroel.
