HAITI LIFE TREE
Off-Grid Utility station for the people of Haiti
The Life Tree Project is a network of off-grid, self sustaining infrastructural units that aim to respond to Haiti’s most immediate urban challenges: limited access to clean drinking water, electricity, and youth education. Each unit pumps ground water to be stored on elevated tanks, which then filtered and distributed strategically to a community of approximately 7000 people. It will generate enough energy not only to supply clean water for nearby community, but also provide electricity for music education of children, and attract communal gathering through screen projections. Driven by preceeding two-year long research, ilfe tree units are designed to exist in most vulnerable cities of Haiti. The Life Tree engages at multiple levels encompassing research, analysis and integrative design proposals that investigate the region’s most relevant social and cultural issues and translates them into design and policy proposals to meet specific community needs

Existing wells and sanitation facilities are plotted on the map to identify those areas that do not have any of these infrastructure facilities. Those areas that do not have any infrastructue amenities are considered the most vulnerable areas.

FABRIC FORMS
Robotically positioned fabric forms for concrete casting
Fabric forms enabled us to achieve a faster, simpler and economic way to cast concrete forms with precision and flexibility, when traditional methods to cast complex geometry is expensive and time consuming. Flexible fabric formwork is adaptable and can be controlled. The team chose to use lycra as the material for formwork, the basic shape is defined by the fixed end conditions in the x,y,z coordinates, which the robotic arms stretch to develop the shape. The extent of stretch and rotation of lycra gave us a series of forms. It retained a natural unpredictability combined with high precision.

“Praxis is the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, practiced, embodied or realized. It may also refer to the act of engaging, applying, exercising, realizing or practicing ideas. The work of the studio is distinguished by the fact that the entire design and construction of the building is carried out manually by a network of architects and skilled craftsmen. The studio has approximately 200 resident people working on the buildings, that use locally derived materials and construction methods. In the exhibition, materials, models, mock-ups, drawings that were actually used in the studio were transported from India and reconstructed in Tokyo. They are assembled in a way the visitors have the opportunity to experience the air, light and sound of the Studio. 30

ARCHES,VAULTS IN EARTH ARCHITECTURE projects in Compressed Earth Blocks, Guastavino Tile Arch and Rammed Earth
Vaults and domes in exposed masonry are featured in several projects. The team of masons skilled in this method of construction are from Auroville Earth Institute where they learned this technique. The domes and vaults are constructed ‘free spanning’ which is without a formwork, thereby reducing the cost and, increasing the pace of masonry construction. The arches are stabilized using Nubian Technique that was developed in ancient Egypt. All vault shapes are calculated to develop catenary forces in the masonry. Their thickness and span can therefore be optimised. I have worked on resorts, residences, churches, pavilions and have conducted workshops, on Guastavino Tile Arch System and Catenary Vaulting with compressed blocks, for Architecture students. 36

UNDERGRADUATE WORK
selected projects from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi
School of Plannign and Architecture is ranked seventh in Asia and I was awarded an admission through a highly competitive All India Public Exam. I have a five year accredited degree with licensure in India. My Thesis in final year (backwater precinct development) dwells on several social issues at macro and micro levels along the backwaters of Kerala, India. The Urban Design program was on Transit Oriented Development, designing an Urban Center along the Metro Corridor, with urban agriculture. Housing semester, designed a Housing promoting inclusivity by creating spaces that allow people to interact on streets which are on multiple levels. Seeing architecture as a service to humanity, chose an elective on Urban poor. I have headed HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Cooperation) in the University, worked on Slum Redevelopment and organised shows to promote the artists of the Informal Settlement.

Establishing a connection between the field and the city - Punnmda Kayal
THESIS - REVIVING WATER TRANSPORTATION A Backwater Precinct Development, Kerala
In an age where the world is shifting towards its cities and rural development has taken a backseat, this thesis proposes a transformational change at a backwater precinct connecting the rural paddy fields with the main city by reviving the old water transportation network. The boat terminal along with the ancillary facilities makes a statement giving its people what the land missed for so long. The architectural solution is a structure where almost all surfaces and spaces have more than one function. The roof as part of the land reformation, creates spaces for viewing the boat race and the backwater. The spatial transformation connects the town’s two parts, creating a social hub for this coastal town.

The floor plates are independent of the roof structure and are supported by columns within the building. The louvers on the South facade help in minimal heat gain filtering light into the various spaces in the building.
Within the building are the various kiosks, information and ticketing counters. The restaurant on the first floor spills out into the Nehru Boat race Pavilion. 51

HOUSING
Inclusive housing, Working Drawings and Slum Redevelopment
Housing is a major concern in most urban areas with increasing migration. Parts of the city have become ethnic enclaves with people sharing similar interests and lifestyle. Inclusive Housing - We had to design a huosing with people of different economic strata living within the same housing community. To promote inclusivity, developed a scheme where houses are built on streets which are at multiple levels. Working Drawings - I have made working drawings for a housing in New Delhi to receive licensure in India. Slum Redevelopment - I headed HUDCO (Housing and Urban Development Corporation) engaged with the informal settlements in the city. The team did an extensive analysis of Kathputli Colony, a slum pocket since several years.
