President’s Letter
Chuck Selcer, President With our excellent team in place, we truly have exciting times ahead. I look forward to seeing the progress that will be made over the next 18 months as the team works to accomplish great things for Sholom! Now that I’m in the final months of my term as President of the Sholom Board of Directors, I wanted to take a moment to look back and reflect upon all that has occurred over the last two years. It has been an eventful and extraordinary time for Sholom. I am quite proud to have served the organization during this pivotal period in its history. When the first year of my term began, we were faced with selecting a new leader for the organization. There is enormous responsibility, along with a great deal of pressure,
to choose the right person. Ultimately, the Board selected Barbara Klick as CEO and we are thrilled with the choice! Her leadership and experience has given the organization and staff a tremendous burst of energy and sense of excitement as she has worked tirelessly getting to know the residents, tenants, staff and community. Her genuine warmth and caring is evident to everyone she meets. Barb’s extensive operations experience and active involvement in the healthcare community are exactly what Sholom needs to move forward in the ever-changing world of healthcare services. As Sholom has evolved under Barb’s leadership, I’ve been filled with a renewed sense of mishpacha or simply, family. Continuing that trend was when Barb and her executive team led the board through a strategic planning exercise. While they may not have realized it, they continued to keep the feeling of mishpacha when crafting Sholom’s goals and strategies for the next 18 months. (See page 14 for more on the strategic plan.) The poignant article in this annual report featuring Eleanor and Rosa makes me realize they have become family—a great example of what Sholom does every day. Ultimately, we connect people and we create family for older adults that don’t have family or families nearby. With our excellent team in place, we truly have exciting times ahead. I look forward to seeing the progress that will be made as we implement our strategic plan to accomplish great things for Sholom! In intricate, complicated and wonderful ways, Sholom really is a mishpacha (family) business. Sholom,

Insights from the CEO
Barbara Klick, CEO At an early age, I decided to make a career in health care because I wanted to make a difference. As my journey of service continues, I am grateful Sholom has chosen me to be their CEO. I joined this community in July 2016 and it has inspired me beyond words. There are many extraordinary residents, tenants (and their families), employees, Sholom Board Directors and community leaders that I have gotten to know over these past months and this feels like home, like family. Together we can better prepare for our changing world where 10,000 Americans turn 65 years of age every day. In 1965 when Medicare was established, the average age of death was just 70 years. Today we see many adults living well past 85 years. Our population’s needs are shifting and our community and services must follow. I see more people living with chronic disease, loss of meaning and purpose, isolation and depression and a less than optimum end-of-life experience.
As a community we have the opportunity to come together to alleviate loneliness and loss by connecting this aged population’s collection of wisdom into service for our community where interest and ability align. If we lift each other up, encourage one another and build upon the collective talents of the dedicated people in our community, together we can achieve great things. It is affirming to see all the good things the staff, the older adults we serve and the community do for each other. I also feel everyone wants to do so much more, to be better and achieve greatness. I firmly believe that goal can be attained through a solid road map. It begins with a strong, thoughtful strategic plan. The executive team and I, with the approval of the Board of Directors, recently updated the strategic plan to map out Sholom’s path from good to great. Building on that foundation, the executive team and I are working to be sure our “basics” are strong and solid. We are gathering data to produce metrics to quantify our progress and show results in order to be transparent to the community we serve. Our supporters are very interested in this information and are anxious to know what progress is being made. Ultimately our community wants to be able to tell others about Sholom’s successes and progress. They want to be proud of Sholom and we are determined to provide the feedback about our achievements and challenges to the community. We are partners in this, together, like a family. With your continued passionate support, we will achieve greatness. I am honored to be with you on this journey. Sincerely,

Eleanor Gantman Sholom Resident
Sholom 2016 Community Report 7
On a frigid January afternoon, Eleanor Gantman and Rosa Mensah sat down together in the Roitenberg Family Assisted Living lounge to tell us about an ordinary day at Sholom. Ordinary days often seem to be just that—ordinary, perhaps even mundane. But what Eleanor and Rosa reminded us is that it’s all about perspective. It’s all about taking the gift of the mundane and choosing to make it the best; for yourself and for others. That day might have been ordinary, but it was made extraordinary by the two women sitting by the fireplace, patting each other’s hands and smiling. The Sholom community is a beautiful collection of diverse people, ranging backgrounds and beliefs, all uniting for the simple purpose of caring for each other. From its oldest resident to its newest staff member, every person lends to that common goal. Rosa and Eleanor’s stories are a reminder that what each of us does each day, what goes noticed and unnoticed—it all matters. It makes a difference. Every single, ordinary day.
E
leanor Gantman celebrated her 100th birthday May 1, 2016. She recounts her life as a happy one filled with her mother, Bessie Lazer’s guidance, her own community service, raising three children, and the deep love that she and her husband, Joe, shared. Upon first impression, Eleanor is a kind and jovial woman who emphasizes the importance of smiling and being nice to people. Eleanor was born in Hopkins, Minnesota on May 1, 1916. She was raised in Youngstown, Ohio, until her father passed away from a car accident. Newly widowed, her mother, Bessie, moved her three daughters back to Minnesota and learned the kosher deli business. Within two years, she opened B. Lazer Delicatessen at 689 Selby Avenue which the family ran for many years. Eleanor worked in her mother’s shop and it was there that she met her future husband, Joe Gantman, a young man who had acquired his father’s meat market across the street. After a three-year courtship, Joe and Eleanor were married. They raised their three children, Jim, Ellen, and Gayle in St. Paul. “My mother lived with my husband and me as soon as we got married,” Eleanor remembered. “We had a happy life.”
“I’ve been doing crossword puzzles for years. I’ve always had a stack of puzzle books. I love it.”
After retiring, Eleanor volunteered at Sholom for twenty-two years. When Eleanor’s sister came to live at Sholom, Eleanor frequently visited her. It was around this time that Eleanor met nursing assistant, Rosa Mensah. Although the two women are of different ages and backgrounds, they shared a special connection and have been friends ever since. After Eleanor underwent open heart surgery seven years ago, making the permanent move to Sholom was the obvious choice. “There were no two ways about it,” Eleanor explained. “There was just a closeness to Sholom. And I had many friends here. It’s in my blood.” Despite her age, Eleanor still maintains a sharp wit and active lifestyle. She walks the perimeter of Sholom Home every morning, works crossword puzzles, plays bingo, goes out to dinner with friends and enjoys visits from her

wonderful family. “My son and his wife live close and they are so good to me. My daughter-in-law is the best,” she says fondly. An ordinary day for Eleanor begins at 6 a.m. She gets up and gets herself ready for the day. “After breakfast, I get the newspaper and start with the crossword puzzle and daily news. And I cuss out the president left and right! Then I ask my table mate if she’d like to go for a walk and we go. I take part in a few activities and bingo when they have it.” When asked if she is surprised by her longevity she replied, “I never thought I’d live to be this old. I don’t feel this old. I’m going for 101!” Eleanor expressed that her philosophy is
R
osa Mensah was born in Ghana, West Africa, and came to the United States in 1987. She remembers landing in Minnesota in January wearing a thin jacket. She didn’t expect it to be so cold. “I told my sister that I wanted to go back,” she recalled with a laugh. While living in Ghana, Rosa took care of her grandmother. “In my country they don’t have nursing homes, so when I came here, I thought, I could do that.” Rosa got her nursing assistant certificate in 1988 and has been working in the field ever since. She came to work at Sholom 15 years ago, has worked in every building on the West Campus and Menorah Plaza and now floats between floors in the health center. “I wasn’t looking for a job. I came here as a private duty aide and saw that this was a nice place. I looked around and fell in love with it. I applied and got a job.” When asked about her friendship with Eleanor, Rosa didn’t hesitate, “We love each other. Today is like a birthday for me—taking photos together, sharing stories. I love this.” “Everybody loves her,” Eleanor affirmed with a short nod. “I love Eleanor,” Rosa replied in her gentle way. “She and I go way back. I used to care for her sister when she was here.” Rosa is often smiling and tries to help others have the best day possible. An ordinary day for her consists of cares, laundry and helping

residents to meals and activities. “I come to work and I smile. If [the residents] ask me for help, I help. I want everyone around me to be happy. If I don’t see you happy, I ask what’s wrong.” “I love Sholom, I’ve been working here for 15 years, so you knows it’s a good place to work. The only thing I would like to see improvement in is that, currently, when they hire people, they don’t stay. This is a nice place to work compared to other places. But when we are short-staffed, the load is really hard, and you get tired and you go home and you don’t want to do anything. If that can be fixed so that everyone isn’t so tired, I really think this would make this place the best place to work.” Rosa also expressed her gratitude to Sholom for being willing to work with her schedule in the summer so that she is able to run her clothing design business. “Sholom has been good to me,” she said. Surprisingly, Rosa and Eleanor also share a name. Eleanor explained, “When I was born I was given a Hebrew name and an English name. But my mother couldn’t spell my Hebrew name so she just called me Rosa. When Rosa and I met, I said, ‘That’s my name too!’” In name and at heart, Eleanor and Rosa are very much alike. They live by example, and emphasize that it all comes down to kindness and going the extra mile to love someone.

What People Are Sayi My sister, Terry, has been at Roitenberg for slightly over a week. She is happy, safe, thriving and enjoying the social opportunities. She is proudly hosting her extended family for dinner at Roitenberg. Leanne and Paula have been a joy to work with and made the transition as smooth as possible. Thank you for making it possible for Terry to be within Sholom’s circle of care!
To the dear, caring people at Sholom who treated me with such TLC during my rehabilitation stay, I want to thank you all so much. I surely appreciate it. If I ever need care again, I’ll know where to go. —Dolores S.
We will never forget the warmth, love and attention given to our mother…from Knollwood to Roitenberg to Sholom Home West. Our mother passed—she was taken from us in peace and dignity, aided by the wonderful Sholom Hospice people!! Thank you. G-d Bless.
I want to thank everyone for all you did for my mother. The Sholom staff (from administration, home health care, therapy, maintenance, dining room) always showed professionalism and grace in what was many times a difficult situation. Often she would call me to tell me how someone had helped her. How wonderful that at the end of someone’s life they would be shown so much kindness. She loved living at Knollwood! —Robin W.
