Frances Nemet Age 100 • Born in Austria

When Hitler came, you had to go wherever you had a visa. “ If you didn’t have a visa for the United States, you couldn’t come here. My family and I fled Austria for Colombia. I liked Colombia. It was a beautiful country and very hot. That many years ago, it was a little more primitive. (It’s more modern now.) My brother had a hotel there, and I helped in it. We were lucky we were out of the war zone.

We didn’t know anything about the war.” View of statues and a mural in Santisima Trinidad Plaza, Cartagena, Colombia

Several years ago, my grandson took me to a Twins game. A player hit a home run, and the ball came to me. The fellow on the other side of me was going for the ball, and I said, ‘You can’t have it!’ I caught the ball, and it was all on the big screen. My grandson who was up in the concession area looked up and saw me on the big screen and said,

‘There’s my grandma!’

“ When I was working, I’d meet up with my two neighbors each

morning, and we’d walk around Lake of the Isles together. Then I’d go home, shower, dress, and get to work by 9 a.m. I used to do the food buying for The White House Restaurant. I loved my job.

I worked until I was 82 years old.
