First Capital Campaign.

Mike Saxon’s family has a long history with Sholom. His paternal grandfather was a resident at an early Sholom facility and both of his grandmothers lived at Sholom – one in St. Paul and one in St. Louis Park. Polly & Mike were regulars at several Sholom Auxiliary Balls, and then became volunteers and supporters. It wasn’t long before Mike was recruited to join the Sholom Foundation Board and Polly was recruited to the Alliance Board.

Mike & Polly Saxon

While Mike was President of the Sholom Foundation, the Foundation was requested to conduct a Capital Campaign to raise funds to meet several organizational needs for projects that had long been deferred or delayed. The Foundation accepted this role and has been diligent since day one to realize this goal. When asked about the Care Comes First Capital Campaign the Chairs shared, “We want the community to understand the vital role played by Sholom; the full scope of services offered today, and the preparations Sholom is making for the changing landscape of our senior community. We need to be ready for the increasing number of people who will need services that are as individualized as each client.” For these reasons, both couples have generously made significant philanthropic investments into the Campaign. Amy & Stan Baratz, both former Chairs of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation Annual Campaign, are known throughout the Twin Cities as philanthropic leaders and active campaigners for many causes. Amy & Stan shared, “For us, the mission is very clear – to provide a broad continuum of residential, social and health care services primarily for older adults within a Jewish environment. We are extremely proud to support this organization.”

For a listing of all donations, see pages 18–27.

Amy & Stan Baratz

Sholom is recognized as a leader in senior services providing independent and assisted living, short-term rehabilitation, long-term skilled care, memory support and a hospice program all within a Jewish environment. Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign embodies a commitment and a can-do attitude from the co-chairs. Sholom has never previously undertaken a campaign of this magnitude. These powerhouse couples, who are friends outside of communal involvement, are excited to spearhead this challenge and feel confident in its success. continued on page 7

ort thought that when he turned 70 this past August he would retire from his four decades of working in development in the Jewish community and leave his role as Vice President of International & Israel Global Philanthropy for the Jewish Agency. Stan Baratz and Mike Saxon, Chairs of Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign had other plans for him. After multiple meetings with Stan and Mike as well as Barbara Klick, CEO of Sholom and Joel Mandel, Executive Director of the Sholom Foundation, Mort agreed to join the staff at Sholom Foundation as Director of the Capital Campaign.

Mort Naiman

He will focus on building relationships with donors who believe in the importance of Sholom as it continues to provide elder care solutions in the Twin Cities and who also want to invest in the next chapter of Sholom’s more-than-a-century of history. Mort brings his knowledge and expertise, particularly at a time when increasing numbers of people will need continuing services. Mort and his wife Micki z”l have been supporters of Sholom for many years and are confident in the future of this organization and have made their own long-term personal commitment to Sholom. Mort’s mother, a Holocaust Survivor, toured Knollwood Place Apartments before her passing in March, 2018, and explored moving here from Florida. Mort invites others who care about providing residential, social, and health care opportunities for older adults within the Jewish community to join him in investing in this remarkable institution. Prior to joining Sholom, Mort worked at the Minneapolis Jewish Federation for almost two decades serving as Campaign Director and Director of the Jewish Community Foundation. Mort commented, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to be working with so many dedicated Capital Campaign volunteers who are not only making their own generous Capital Campaign gifts but are also meeting with prospects to share Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign message.” Amy & Stan Baratz, both former Minneapolis Jewish Federation Annual Campaign Chairs commented, “We worked with Mort at the Federation and know him to be like a bulldog – once he gets hold of you, he won’t let go!” z”l Mike Saxon added, “Leadership in St. Paul know Mort and Micki as this dynamic duo with a passion and commitment for community and a vast network of friends who respect what together they have accomplished. We are thrilled to have Mort join the Sholom Foundation staff to help with the Care Comes First Capital Campaign.”

Sholom Foundation – Impact, Community, Appreciation

– Sholom Foundation Immediate Past President, Mark Freeman

T

his month, my two year term as president comes to an end. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with this wonderful community of professionals and volunteers. My personal thanks goes to each member of the Foundation Board who has shared his/her expertise and passion to help us so much. I am very appreciative of our donors past and present whose generosity enables the Foundation to provide support to Sholom. The Sholom Community Alliance performs miracles every day as it ensures a safe and comfortable home for our seniors where they thrive and participate in meaningful and enriching programs. I also want to particularly thank Joel Mandel, the Sholom Foundation Executive Director, for his hard work and dedication allowing the Foundation to continue to grow.

Over the past two years the Sholom Foundation has focused on raising funds for Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign. This crucial campaign aims to fulfill the current and future capital needs at both campuses, upgrade and introduce new technology, and strengthen employee programs and benefits, all to position Sholom for success in the future. My deepest appreciation goes to the Campaign Cabinet, our professionals and the many volunteers who have contributed so much time and energy on behalf of the Campaign. I am truly grateful for their continuing efforts. The progress of the campaign has already been noticeable. Significant renovations have been made on the second and third floors of Sholom Home West, improvements in technology have been made across both Sholom campuses,

and life-safety improvements are completed in the interior and Mark Freeman exterior of the Ackerberg Family Sholom West campus. In addition, the hard working and dedicated Sholom staff is benefiting through increased compensation and employment benefits. Care Comes First continues to be an important and transformational Campaign. The goal to raise endowment funds remains at the heart of Sholom Foundation’s work. The earnings generated from our endowments help generate financial support for Sholom’s programs and services and promote an excellence of care for every resident and program participant. The Sholom Foundation is projected to provide nearly $1.5 million toward the Sholom budget in Fiscal Year 2018-2019. I encourage you to consider establishing an endowment fund and adding your name to the Sholom Foundation Wall of Honor, thereby helping to assure Sholom’s future. Moving forward, my lifelong friend and colleague Steve Gottlieb is assuming the role as the Sholom Foundation President. Steve is an experienced and energetic leader with a sharp mind and a very warm heart. Steve has already made an impact and the Foundation will continue to flourish under his leadership. I am excited about Sholom’s future. This community continues to not only be generous with our time but also our resources. We are serious about our commitment to providing care for those who cared for us. L’shana Tova and all good wishes for the coming year!

Dear Directors of Sholom Home East, Having been a rehab patient at Sholom Home East in the Macalester Wing for almost three weeks, I want to commend you for maintaining such a wholesome, clean facility. As the Senior Rabbi in the Twin Cities – 57 years as the director of the local Chabad Lubavitch Movement – I am proud of the Jewish community for having such a foremost care facility in its midst. I want to especially commend you on the excellent staff – all of them! They exude joy. Keep up the good work! Sincerely, Rabbi Moshe Feller – Director and Senior Rabbi, Upper Midwest Merkos Chabad Lubavitch

Rabbi Moshe Fe ller

Where do I Begin? A Learning Series for Adult Children Partnering with Aging Parents – Classes About Resources, Education & Services – Funded by the Mike & Linda Fiterman

Family Foundation

L

inda and Mike Fiterman reflected on the time when Mike’s mom experienced declining health, especially during the few months prior to her passing. Linda said, “We were faced with many of the same concerns with which people struggle when their parents are aging and require ‘more’.”

“I’m having trouble finding resources that can help my mother”; “How do I know if Mom should be living independently, and if she moves, where should we look?”; “Dad shouldn’t really be driving but if he stops, he will be stranded”; “How do we talk about health care directives?”

Based upon their own experience, and confirmed by friends in similar situations, the Fitermans approached Sholom with a proposal to address an unmet need in the Community: to develop an educational program for individuals and families, to be prepared and better understand the roles they may be called upon to assume when parents and loved ones become aged and infirm. Sholom gladly accepted this request, and is excited to present Sholom C.A.R.E.S. Education Series. Throughout each interactive session, participants will focus on the aging process and learn how to access community resources, preparing them to address Linda & Mike Fiterman

4

aging issues as they arise. A second emphasis is developing a partnership – by working as a team, adult children and parents can successfully navigate any problem or concern. The need for this education is well documented. As of July, 2016, the population of Hennepin and Ramsey counties is aging significantly with a quarter million people over age 60 and of those, greater than 60,000 are at least 80 years old. Many seniors look to families for support. Stakeholder focus groups captured the most salient issues. Participants included adult children of aging parents, seniors, family members, and professionals in the Jewish community including JFCS, JFS, JCC, gerontologists, university professors, nurses, and social workers. Session topics highlight common concerns: • Money, finances, and planning • Driving • Sharing your values as you age – parents and adult children. • Housing and where to live • Caring for the caregiver • The ABC’s of community resources, and who can help • Death and bereavement • Developing an end-of-life care plan – what is it and why it is important Sessions will be held at a variety of venues around the Twin Cities, including partner Jewish agencies. Each of eight sessions will be offered twice, once in Minneapolis and once in St. Paul. There is no charge to attend. With much gratitude we thank Linda and Mike Fiterman for their generosity and for bringing this issue to the fore. The results of this series promise to be enlightening, helpful, and reassuring. Sessions are scheduled through the end of 2020. To preregister for the October 27th session, ‘Sharing Your Values as You Age,’ with your parent or adult child or to request a program brochure and more information, please contact Chris Kellogg at 952.939.1578 or ckellogg@sholom.com.

f you only seek the “predictable”, you will miss out on great people and great things. You would, in fact, miss knowing the incomparable Karen and Fred Gordon.

Fred was raised in Stillwater, Minnesota, where only a handful of families comprised the Jewish community. Karen hails from Minnesota Lake, a small agricultural town in southern Minnesota. She studied and converted to Judaism in 1971. In unison they said, “Considering neither of us have typical Jewish backgrounds, we don’t fit the same predictable pattern as other donors or volunteers. Community continues to be very important to both of us – and we are thrilled to be part of it.” Karen and Fred Gordon believe in Sholom’s mission and are proud supporters. Fred observed, “Two things impressed us most – the fantastic care provided, unlike anywhere else, and the strong sense of community which remains one of Sholom’s great differentiators.”

Fred & Karen Gordon

The Gordons commented, “The residents identify with the mission and feel part of the community. The staff is integral to the Sholom Community and helps shape it. Sholom is a vital part of the Twin Cities Jewish Community and in turn, the community supports the mission.”

Early on, the Gordons discovered, if you reach out, join, and volunteer, you are welcomed with open arms. The Gordon’s early community involvement concentrated on Temple Israel and the Jewish Federation. Their impressions from a 1980 Mission to Israel became the catalyst for their future involvement and philanthropy. They noted, “We were introduced to people from all across the world, and the Jewish Community was the common bond!” Karen and Fred were invited to join the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus Capital Campaign as donors and volunteers. With Karen’s medical background as an occupational therapist, and their jointly held desire to advance the Jewish Community, they answered the invitation with a resounding yes. Karen offered, “My grandfather was this larger-than-life kind of guy who was a physician in rural Minnesota for over 50 years as well as mayor and head of the school board. He also donated funds for a community building, which is still in use today.”

“I’ve taken on my grandfather’s sense of community and made it my own. By his example, we support what is important,” Karen reflected.

Karen said, “I am privileged to help make an impact as a Sholom Foundation Board member.” Fred is a tremendous advocate for Sholom, and he continued, “We have worked hard as neither of us comes from wealthy families and we know there is also a certain amount of luck that plays a role.” The Gordons are members of the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society and Fred shared, “Through a testamentary gift to the Sholom Foundation, our support will continue long after we are gone and the crucial work that Sholom achieves will endure.” The Gordon’s emphasized, “The more active you are and the more you connect with people you can help, the happier you will be. We feel terrific that we are connecting with people and are able to make lives better.” Our sincere thanks are extended to Karen and Fred Gordon for sharing their insights and acting upon their values. Who is the Life of the Party? The Kane Family – for 50 years!

W

hen the Kanes are in the house, you’d think it was New Year’s Eve! The music is loud, the conversation is animated, and the energy is out-of-control! For 50 fun years the Kane family has been dedicated to bringing joy to Sholom while setting an example of tzedakah and volunteering. While growing up in the ’20s and ’30s, brothers Sam and Aaron Kane shared an unusually close bond with their first cousin Joe Kane. In the fall of 1968 Joe's dad, the brothers' Uncle Harry, moved to Sholom Home East, then located on Midway Parkway. The following spring there were festivities aplenty for Mother’s Day, but nothing was scheduled for Father’s Day. Seeing an opportunity, Joe, Sam, and Aaron created a fantastic event, a casino night, to make sure Harry and the other men had a terrific Father’s Day celebration. Thus began the Kane family Father's Day tradition at Sholom which celebrated its 50th anniversary this past spring.

Volunteers add to the fun and festivities

The Kane boys hosted quite a party which was repeated many years running. Casino Night included a delicious dinner, drinks and a live dance band. It was the “real deal” with noisy casino tables and nurses became dance partners. Klondike Kate and her entourage from the St. Paul Winter Festival added to the great evening. The Kanes knew how to have fun and guaranteed a great time to everyone who attended. Soon the next generation of Kanes joined the team to help plan and shepherd the event. Following in their fathers’ footsteps, Terry (Sam’s son), Barry (Aaron’s son) and Bruce (Joe’s son) made sure the fun continued. The event became even more personal for the family again when Sam Kane lived at Sholom from 1983-1990. When the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus opened in St. Louis Park, the Kane Casino Night moved west. Through the years the event shifted from a Father’s Day event to a large bingo game with prizes and all residents having an opportunity to participate. As the Kane family has grown, so has the involvement of younger generations. Terry’s grandson Rob Schwartz was on board this year, as

6

were Bruce’s sons Steven Kane and Michael Kane, and all brought a cadre of volunteers to make sure the night was a success. Families of Sholom residents, too, were encouraged to join with their loved ones at Bingo night. “As the average age of the residents goes up, and capabilities change, we have an even greater reason to bring joy to Sholom. Dancing is no longer part of the event, but having fun remains our number one goal,” said Terry Kane. “While this began with the desire that Uncle Harry should have a good time, we continue to look forward to making people happy.” Bruce Kane said, “We love planning the Kane bingo event. I am thrilled that my sons, the next generation, are part of this. Fifty years is a milestone, and we are committed to continuing the Kane tradition at Sholom.” The Kanes are equally dedicated to Sholom through their financial support. Terry and his wife Mitzi are contributors to Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign. We also gratefully acknowledge the Mitzi & Terry Kane Family Fund and the Estelle and Joe Kane Family Fund. These endowment funds at the Sholom Foundation help support Sholom’s services and campuses, and promote excellence in care, today and for generations to come. Mazel tov to the Kane family on the 50th anniversary of bringing fun and joy to Sholom. For more information, please call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593 or jmandel@sholom.com.

Itʼs All About the Grands! by Aimee Feldman

W

hen I think back to my childhood, I barely remember a time when I didn’t have a grandparent living at the Sholom Home. My paternal grandfather, Sam Kane, or Zaida to our family, moved to Sholom on Midway Parkway in 1983 at the age of 69. I was 9 and when most of my friends were going on fun adventures with their grandparents, I was visiting Zaida at Sholom. He had Parkinson’s, was confined to a wheelchair and became mostly nonverbal as the years passed. I have many happy memories of visiting him and going to music programs, magic shows, ice cream socials and other programs offered to enrich the lives of Sholom residents. I also remember many caring and committed staff members who cared for my zaida. My other grandfather, Harry Latts, moved to Sholom in 1992. He lived in the Memory Care Unit and while it was hard to watch him decline amid the effects of dementia, I never had any doubt that he was in the best of hands at Sholom. I got a different glimpse of Sholom when two of my husband Noah's grandparents lived at Sholom in St. Louis Park. Noah's Grandpa, Bob Berg, lived at Sholom Home West briefly in

(Zaida) Sam Kane with Aimee Feldman age 9

2005 and his Grandma June Berg lived at Knollwood Place Apartments from 2012-2015. Until June moved to Knollwood Place Apartments, my experience was limited to the care centers. It was fun to see the other Sholom services and watch June enjoy group outings, plan and participate in social events and play in regular card games. We were happy to see that Sholom can meet the needs of older members of our community in so many different ways.

Chairs named for Care Comes First Capital Campaign

continued from page 1

Polly, Mike, Amy, and Stan recognize that it was more than 30 years ago when Sholom opened its doors at the Ackerberg Family Campus in Minneapolis and a decade has passed since the doors opened on the new Shaller Family Campus in St. Paul. Now is the time to ensure Sholom has state-of-the-art facilities and rehabilitation services, the most modern systems and infrastructure, current and up-to-date technology, and the capability to employ the most qualified and caring staff possible. “For more than a century, Sholom has been committed to meeting the unique needs of the elders in our community, and to this day our residents are at the center of everything we do,” said Mike. “With the help of our generous donors, we’re taking personcentered care to the next level by updating our campus to redefine home and revolutionize care for the individuals we serve.” Polly & Amy commented, “We understand that each generation needs to make things better for the next while recognizing everything earlier generations did for us. In the very same way, incumbent upon the four of us as Chairs of the Care Comes First Capital Campaign is to improve the world for the generations who follow.” Our Chairs recognize that for Sholom to be relevant for another hundred years, we must do something different beginning now, for the people we serve. There is no denying for Sholom and the broader community this is an essential need. “Community support for Sholom has been extraordinary and is greatly appreciated,” commented Sholom CEO Barbara Klick. “I am elated that the Capital Campaign is being chaired by individuals of this stature and whose dedication to our residents is unfailing.”

Ben Steinberg – A Creative Force in Senior Housing

B

en Steinberg, past Sholom Foundation Board Member and commercial real estate finance and investment executive, received the Susie Selcer Leadership Award at the 2019 Sholom Annual Meeting.

Family Fund and are members of the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society. Ben and Maxine continue to be active members at Temple Israel.

“The award honors an individual whose work within the Sholom organizations and the Twin Cities Jewish Community exemplifies outstanding leadership, integrity, spirit and tzedakah, presented in tribute to Susie Selcer,” said Chuck Selcer, Susie’s son and a past President of the Sholom Foundation and the Sholom Alliance. “Ben has been a fixture in Sholom leadership and commands the respect of everyone working in the organization today. He was instrumental in developing our senior housing. Ben says a lot in few words, and people listen.” Bob Karon, Sholom Foundation Board member, echoed these sentiments, “Ben makes excellent contributions to the Sholom Foundation Investment Committee and to the Foundation. His expertise and knowledge is invaluable.” In the late 1960’s Ben and his wife, Maxine, arrived in the Twin Cities from Chicago. Experienced in real estate finance, Ben was recruited to a task force of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation with the mission of helping the Jewish seniors living in the old Northside. The task force evolved into the Community Housing and Service Corporation with Ben as its president. During his tenure, there were several successful milestones, including acquisition of an apartment building that provided affordable senior housing; Menorah Plaza was planned and constructed; and the Community Housing and Service Corporation and Sholom Home merged into one senior-focused community organization. Ben also served on the planning committees for the development of both Sholom campuses. At the award presentation, Ben said, “I focused my community efforts on Sholom for the last 50 years because I felt my life’s work in real estate gave me something to offer toward housing our seniors. In turn, it has been rewarding to see what we have accomplished together and to contribute to the Sholom Community’s growth and success.” Along with his real estate expertise, Ben has generously served the Sholom Foundation Investment Committee and the Sholom Community Alliance Budget & Finance Committee. Maxine also served Sholom as a member of the PR and Marketing Committee and as a Marketing Director. Together they established the Ben and Maxine Steinberg

Ben Steinberg Family

Throughout our lives, Dad has been a role model of the joy and accomplishments that come from participating in our Jewish community and helping neighbors and friends. Sholom has been an integral part of our family. Our parents are an inspiration! Their grandchildren have volunteered at Sholom and want to find more ways to support their community,” said his daughters, Nikki Gagerman and Tracy Steinberg Arnold.

They added, “It is Dad’s deep appreciation for all that Sholom has given him that makes us understand his commitment. Dad truly received a profound sense of community and personal growth from this work.” Mazel Tov to Ben on this award and for his 50 years of service to Sholom and the Twin Cites Jewish community.

Paul Ross – Pied Piper and Innovator z”l

P

aul Ross was a doer, a problem solver, and a Sholom Volunteer extraordinaire. Residents clamored for his weekly discussions and warm greetings were his specialty. Paul passed away earlier this year. One of his enduring legacies is the development of the Music and Memory Program at Sholom. In 2014, Paul and his wife Connie watched the documentary Alive Inside. Paul, a music lover, instinctively knew that replicating the music program portrayed in the film would benefit Sholom residents living with dementia.

Paul contacted Barb Gutzmann, Director of Therapeutic Recreation at the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus to begin and nurture what would become the Music and Memory Program, and to date, more than 150 residents have been positively impacted. Outstanding benefits Paul Ross include increased cognition, motivation, appetite, and recall as well as a reduction in falls, depression, and anxiety. The Music and Memory Program has become a tremendous option for residents living with dementia. Alive Inside features music as a tool to enhance the lives of those with dementia. As a result of the disease, portions of the brain no longer function. However, the brain has many receptors for music and can reach other pathways triggering memory and recall. Social scientists discovered that working one-to-one with the individual, aided with headphones, an iPod and an individualized playlist, amazing results can occur. Individualized playlists are based upon the resident’s favorite music. A staff person or volunteer sits beside the resident, and using a headphone splitter, listens along with the resident. As a reaction occurs, the resident is directly engaged to begin communication. Reactions are gauged by physical movements such as arm movements, eyes opening, and ultimately speaking.

Paul would be proud of the program’s many successes including: • Jack is a widower, non-verbal, and spent his days sleeping or staring. When his iPod started, he opened his eyes, and smiled. The volunteer was able to engage Jack

one-to-one, who shared stories of dancing with his wife and even recalled the car he drove when they were dating. • Jane, at 104, was a non-verbal and unresponsive resident. When Jane wore the headphones, the music reached her. Barb Gutzmann and Paul Ross Responding to the confer on the development music and staff of the Music and Memory member’s voice, Jane Program. smiled and became more alert and opened her eyes.

Staff discovered the iPod offers a secondary benefit for residents who are part of the ongoing Music and Memory Program. • Sarah is a Holocaust survivor. Often when a nurse would approach Sarah to give her medications, she was transported back to the war and refused to cooperate. Her iPod playlist included Take Me Out to the Ballgame and A Bicycle Built for Two. After 30 seconds of listening to the music through her headphones, Sarah relaxed and took her pills, all the while singing along with the music. • Ben often experiences increased anxiety and restlessness in the late afternoon. An iPod listening session with his music relaxes Ben and his symptoms are reduced or delayed. Paul and Connie advanced their dedication to Sholom by establishing the Connie & Paul Ross Family Music & Memory Fund for the Shaller East Campus. Additionally, Sholom is also extremely grateful for the creation of a second endowment fund, the Connie & Paul Ross Family Fund. Connie & Paul Ross are proud members of the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society as are their children, Francie & Barry Ross. Paul didn’t seek the limelight. However, an extremely proud moment was accepting the Susie Selcer Leadership Award. Paul Ross’s legacy lives on through the programs and resources he established. For more information on supporting Music and Memory Program and other Sholom programs, please contact Joel Mandel, 952.939.1593 or jmandel@sholom.com.

Wow! 7 out of 10 of us don’t even have a Will, let alone a Charitable Legacy Plan. Here are several reasons why creating a Will is important:

e

You can control how and where your estate will be distributed

e

You can make specific bequests to family members and others who are important to you

e

You can make charitable bequests to your favorite charity – might that be the Sholom Foundation?

e

It may save taxes and control unnecessary expenses in the administration of your estate

e

If there is no Will, the state determines how your estate – no matter the size – is distributed, regardless of your good intentions

Whatever the size of your estate, you have the ability to leave a legacy for your loved ones, a charity close to your heart, and for the world in which you live, when you take the first step. Please call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593 or jmandel@sholom.com to learn more about creating a maximum impact and leaving a powerful legacy.

What makes Sholom 5-Star Quality For You? Quality, from the State’s perspective, looks at many factors, including:  A resident’s ability to make choices and have autonomy.  Residents are happy and develop friendships, and are treated respectfully and with dignity.  Residents receive excellent care.  Resident rooms are comfortable and clean; common spaces, including outside areas, are accessible and easy to use.  There is a wide selection of food choices available and it is tasty. Residents shared, in their own words, what Sholom’s 5-Star Quality means to them. Here is what they say:

Barbara Kluender

Marilyn Burback

Amy Hauer

13

Barbara praised the staff at Sholom Home West for their positive attitudes and listening skills. She takes daily walks and gets out frequently with family, including the recent State Fair. Staff respects Barbara and treats her with dignity. The kitchen produces good food, and she always finds something she likes. Barbara has experience in other nursing homes, and unlike those, she added, “Here, I have a large room, a good roommate, and big windows with trees right outside. The activities here are terrific. I’m doing fine.”

Marilyn is surrounded by huge photo collages of her loving family which adorn her room. Marilyn has lived at the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East on the Shaller Family Campus for a number of years, and said, “When I came to visit Sholom, I thought I was at a hotel.” She continued, “The staff is helpful, and I’m treated well. It is just super here. I really dig hot dogs, and that was on the menu for Labor Day lunch. I was thrilled. There is no question – this is a quality place to live.”

Joanne Crosson

Joanne is happy at the Shirley Chapm Sholom Home East and when asked a 5-star quality, she quickly answered, “Yes She is pleased with the treatment she re and her wishes are respected. Joanne s much time in her room, but does enjo programs when she is able to attend. assists her with self-directed meanin activities as well. She has made good fr among staff and residents alike an applauded the nurses and aides.

Amy is an animated and articulate resident at Sholom Home West. Amy’s motorized chair gets her where she wants to go and on her schedule. Amy shared that staff has a good rapport with the residents and their families, and the nurses are attentive and responsive. She said, “People listen to what I have to say. I am pretty independent, and I’m able to go out with my family.” In fact, Amy attends most of the Lynx basketball games. “My needs are being met. The food is good and I am very satisfied. I participate in activities, and other residents are very friendly. I am well cared for.”

Sholom Re for 5-Star Qua Sholom is proud to announce the achievement of 5-Star rating in Quality Measures by the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This distinguishing acknowledgment follows a regularly scheduled review of the facilities by examining levels of care and other metrics. This top grade designates and signifies “much above average quality” as determined by CMS. “Achieving Five Star Quality Measures for both of our facilities shows the hard work, dedication, and compassionate care our team provides each and every day and is now even more recognized outside the walls our residents call home,” said Barb Klick, Sholom CEO. “I could not be prouder of our team, our Board, the Auxiliary, the Sholom Foundation, and the community for their help in making today’s Sholom the best it can be.”

man about s it is!” receives spends oy the . Staff ngful riends nd

Barb Klick continued, “Those who know us have seen Sholom’s community impact and high quality care for the last 110 years. But for those who don’t know us, or don’t know us well, this Five Star recognition is an invitation to get to know us better, and to support this award winning 5-Star organization.” “We are proud of this recognition but we will not rest on our laurels,” Klick emphasized. “Sholom’s leadership continues to find new and innovative ways to address the needs of today’s senior and provide the type of care and community our residents deserve.” We are also pleased to note that the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East has received the overall rating of High Performing in the US News and World report of Minnesota’s Best Nursing Homes. This award is a further testament to Sholom’s long history of quality care for our seniors.

Lev Vasilevsky

was excited to share his thoughts quality, “All around us on the Shaller y Sholom East Campus is quality, and very happy to be here. I live a good eople look after me. I’m happy with m – a Jewish home, a Jewish place to practice yoga, and I’m a vegetarian. can do both here at Sholom – it all works well!”

Maury is pleased to say he is happy and feels safe at Sholom Home West. His needs are met, and staff pays attention to him – including reminding Maury to use his walker to stay safe. He finds plenty to eat, whether it’s the entrée or one of many alternatives. Maury looks forward to weekly Shabbat services and attends the Yiddish class as part of his routine.

Leo Fine is very friendly and there’s always a twinkle in his eye. Leo’s wife Maureen joined the conversation. Leo has a good roommate and nice surroundings. They appreciate staff for engaging Leo in conversation, rather than merely assuming his desires or needs. Leo loves the activity programs, and as a musician, he is especially excited when they have a musical focus. Maureen, who lives in the community, concurs that Leo is treated with dignity and care, and this makes the entire family happy.

Bonnie defines quality very simply, “Sholom’s maxim says it all: Care, Compassion, Community. Staff members are caring and compassionate, and community is everywhere around us.” She went on, “There is strong support for Sholom and people feel welcomed. Because the staff cares, you can feel yourself getting better.” Bonnie participates in a wide variety of interesting programs and staff ensures she can attend them regardless of the program’s location throughout the campus.

Chuck is a well-spoken and talented individual who resides at the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East. Beside him sits his computer, his paints, and an easel holding a canvas-in-progress. Some of his art, including a blue ribbon winner, decorates his room. Chuck said staff is known for treating residents well. He is very social, visiting with neighbors on his hall, and throughout the building. Chuck added, “Staff members constantly extend themselves and I am very appreciative.”

Mom loved Sholom because it felt “hamish,” like home. She loved the food in particular. Mom made special relationships with other residents and with the caregivers who helped put her back on her feet after a scary health crisis. Thank you, Sholom, for being there for us. We owe Sholom all the gratitude. Mom stayed just a short time, but that time offered her a great quality of life as she was being nursed back to health.”
