The impact of COVID-19 on Sholom is profound. Your support during this unprecedented crisis has made a difference in the lives of each
Esther and Martin Capp were devoted supporters of Sholom, helping to provide for the needs of seniors in our community long into the future. They established the Martin & Esther Capp Endowment Fund during their lifetime, left a legacy for after they were gone, and participated in capital and annual fundraising campaigns. Susan Rosenblatt, granddaughter of the Capps, shared some insights into the values which continue to guide the family’s philanthropy, “My grandparents believed in hard work and in dedication to the community.” Lisa added, “My parents worked hard to accumulate the means by which they could lend a hand.
resident, their families, and to our staff. Thank you for your help.
f my parents, Esther and Marty Capp, were sitting with me right now, I’d thank them for their legacy and for allowing us to continue their philanthropic efforts. I hope they would be proud of our accomplishments,” Lisa Capp recently remarked when talking about her parent’s generosity. She continued, “By translating their values into actions, Martin and Esther Capp we endeavor to follow in their footsteps!” Recognizing a great need, the Capp Family donated $100,000 to Sholom’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund, helping to ensure that Sholom’s vulnerable residents will continue to receive uninterrupted care and services during these unprecedented times.

Sholom’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Campaign Garners Tremendous Support
T
he alarm bells sounded on March 13! COVID-19 was no longer a perceived threat; the terrifying illness was now at our doorstep. The Sholom Foundation launched into high gear, immediately establishing an emergency campaign to help mitigate the huge costs this new disease would bring to Sholom. The Sholom Foundation is honored to thank more than 500 individuals, families, foundations, and businesses which, in a matter of weeks, answered a plea for help! More than $660,000 has been raised for Sholom’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. At the same time, countless in-kind gifts of personal protective equipment (PPE), laptops and iPads, high-tech equipment and televisions, games and puzzles, and meals for staff arrived at Sholom’s two campuses to help ease the stress and anxiety caused by the COVID-19. (Please see pages 16 and 21.)
For a listing of all donations, see pages 17–23
Sholom’s resident population, with an average age of 86, is at an extremely high risk for serious illness as a result of COVID-19. With lightning speed, protective measures were implemented to safeguard our vulnerable residents. The Sholom Foundation recognized the costs for these vital actions would grow exponentially, as would the loss of revenue, both repercussions of the continued on page 9

21 for $2.1 – Care Comes First Capital Campaign Update
C
onstruction continues at an accelerated pace for the 1st floor renovations at the Knollwood Place Apartments. Protective barriers have allowed work to progress, and in fact, the beautiful new lobby, dining room, nosh nook, game and computer room, and program spaces will be completed ahead of schedule. Since renovations began, Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign Co-Chairs have been keeping their eyes on the amount of cash and pledges needed to pay for the $4.9 million Knollwood renovation.
“Thank you to those who have demonstrated support through their financial commitments,” said Capital Campaign Co-Chair, Amy Baratz. “It’s very heartwarming to see the community support this bold move.” Stan Baratz, also a Campaign Co-Chair added, “This is a huge accomplishment for our community – one in which we hope donors take great pride.” Providing a firm platform for the project is the $2.8 million already raised for the Knollwood renovation, leaving a gap of $2.1 million needed to complete the funding by the end of the year.

Renovating the space for mailboxes.
“To date, the Capital Campaign has raised $16 million. A focus now is to secure the remaining funds for the Knollwood renovation, as well as funding for other high priority projects," said Mike & Polly Saxon, also Co-Chairs for the Campaign. The Capital Campaign Co-Chairs recently unveiled a special Knollwood Place Apartments Renovation goal of 21 gifts totaling $2.1 million. Asking 21 individuals, families, and foundations to each commit to gifts of at least $100,000 payable over 5 years, will secure the $2.1 million needed to complete the $4.9 million renovation project. Knollwood Place residents and their families are also being invited to participate in the Campaign. Even with COVID-19 and construction ongoing, potential residents love the virtual tours, are holding their apartments with deposits, and move-in dates are being scheduled. Residents are looking forward to the inviting new “Nosh Nook” dedicated by the Sholom Auxiliary with a $250,000 gift. For information on becoming a donor to the Knollwood Place Apartments Capital Campaign Renovation Project, please contact Mort Naiman at 952.939.1631, or mnaiman@sholom.com.
The “Nosh Nook” will be open and spacious.
Sholom Responds to the COVID-19 Emergency
S
holom’s staff, headed by Barbara Klick, Sholom CEO, heeded the early warnings of an impending devastating virus – COVID-19. Following the advice of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), a stringent course of action was immediately implemented, carefully designed to prevent and combat COVID-19 and to safeguard the health and wellbeing of staff. Sholom is exceedingly proud of its response to COVID-19. Staff rallied to the emergency and continues to employ expert professional judgement and thinking, implementing policies and procedures, calling upon many years of combined training, knowledge, best practices, and experience. Sholom’s amazing actions in the face of this emergency reflects the finest in leadership, professionalism, selflessness, dedication, and teamwork.
A resident’s son shared, “The nursing staff was fabulous: answering my questions in as a supportive way as possible, helping set up video calls, and most importantly, giving comfort to my mom.”
Enjoying a cold ice cream sundae on a hot afternoon.
Clinical measures were immediately initiated throughout Sholom. • Restricting all visitors from entering Sholom buildings, permitting only essential staff into resident areas. • Halting all group programs and activities, dining rooms were closed, even Passover Seders were cancelled. • Requiring staff health screenings at the beginning of each shift. • Monitoring vital signs of residents in the care center and assisted living. • Increasing the supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (face masks, gowns, face shields, disposable gloves). • Meticulously preparing isolation areas should they be needed by residents under investigation for COVID-19 and/or testing positive for COVID-19 but not requiring hospitalization. • Immediately strengthening staff education for infection control, recognition of COVID-19 symptoms, and meeting resident’s psycho-social needs, especially during social isolation.
Clinical measures, including wearing PPE, were vital.
“Our mother, Barb, who lives at Sholom Home West, tells us how comfortable she is. My siblings and I are glad Mom is comfortable and she is confident in the way COVID-19 is being managed. Thank you from all of us.”

Sholom Responds continued from page 3 Transparency – Sholom made the important decision to continue its practice of openness and transparency. Barbara Klick stated, “We have worked hard to create trust and cooperation and be open with our staff, residents, families and the community. Even though we anticipate there may be information that is difficult to share and hard to hear, we will ensure transparency through our website, telephone hotline, and emailed information. It is the right thing to do. We know these times are unprecedented and accompanied with fear and anxiety. We will continue to provide excellent care, complying with rules and guidelines, balancing it with reality and decelerating panic.” “I am so appreciative for the clear information we receive from Sholom about COVID-19. Our family is confident that all that can be done is being done, to keep everyone safe and healthy. I miss visiting with my mom, but we understand. Thank G-D for Sholom.” –Sonia Ungerman, whose mother lives at Knollwood Place Apartments.
Sonia Ungerman and her mother Dalia Katz who is a resident of Knollwood Place Apartments.
I cannot imagine there is another facility in this state where the residents are cared for like we are. We Jews of the Twin Cities are very fortunate that years ago this organization was created to care for the elderly. The staff is working so hard to keep us comfortable and busy during this difficult time. We are so appreciative. –Dalia Katz

Susan Duchon, whose father resides at Sholom Home West said, “I am very pleased with ongoing communication with Sholom. Their staff called to tell me how Dad is being monitored and evaluated. The wonderful care he is receiving is just the same as before COVID-19. I can’t say enough positive things about staff.” Herman Shikrot
We gave to the COVID-19 relief fund in gratitude for all that Sholom does for the residents and the community. Our grandmother Renée was so appreciative of the amazing care she received. Renée had a great quality of life being on the Sholom campus. –The Kopilenko Family
Supporting Residents – A hallmark of Sholom is the depth of programming offered to residents which encourage socialization, communication, and engagement. In light of COVID-19 and ceasing all group activities, staff pivoted to provide the same level of service while providing alternative formats. Creativity became the watchword of Therapeutic Recreation. Generous friends of Sholom donated iPads, laptop computers, and video equipment. These offer a means of communication with loved ones, as well as leisure time enjoyment for viewing and streaming movies, concerts, and virtual tours. Entertainers relocated from the auditoriums to the parking lots, broadcasting their music into resident areas. Individualized activities including books, cards, games, puzzles, art and handcraft projects became even more available. Days were brightened with flowers, ice cream socials, and happy hour carts traveling from room to room. Virtual reality goggles allow residents to “travel” to far-away places. Memory boxes filled with familiar objects stimulate conversation and reminiscences. continued on page 5
Sholom Responds continued from page 4 Spiritual Care and religious services remain a priority. The Rabbis, Chaplains, and staff conduct services, study groups, and pastoral counseling using Zoom, telephone, and one to one visits (with appropriate PPE). In these uncertain times, Spiritual Care is even more welcome by residents and staff. Inspirational messages are widely shared, especially to uplift tired and overwhelmed workers. Rabbi Shalom Reznik-Bell stated, “We provide traditional prayers and pastoral care in non-traditional ways; the method of delivery may be new, but the essentials remain intact.” Staff response – Sholom staff members across all departments have risen to the occasion, demonstrating dedication and concern for the residents. Individuals assume added responsibilities, work long hours, while balancing work duties with concerns for one’s own health and the health of their loved ones. Some staff members were redeployed to deliver meals, mail, groceries, and to fill-in service gaps. Staff is called upon to help calm resident’s fears and assume the role of loved ones and volunteers who cannot visit. Front-desk staff has the painful task of helping families say good-bye to their loved ones until visiting is once again permitted. The definition of person-centered care has expanded to provide additional TLC and one-to-one focus for room-bound residents with increased attention.Sholom is proud of its staff: true professionals and heroes.
Shirley Jacobson
Shirley Jacobson, a resident of the Roitenberg Assisted Living residence, shared her feelings about staying safe during COVID-19. “I’m a bit lonely; I eat by myself, I walk by myself,” and she laughed, “I’m getting tired of myself! Never in my life did I think I would experience this, but I really can’t complain. I see the family on Zoom. My meals are delivered to my apartment and I receive calls from all over. I pray for the vaccine – we have to think positive!”
“Even with my mask, I water the garden daily. I’m eager for the tomatoes to ripen.”
Sholom plays such an important role in our community. In these extraordinary times, we wanted to help Sholom with additional financial support to assist with managing through the crisis to ensure a strong organization and continued quality care and services. –Randi and Barry Wolfish
Despite all efforts, some lives were lost at Sholom as the result of COVID-19. Each death is significant. We mourn for our friends, residents, and our co-worker. We miss these individuals being by our side. May their memories be for a blessing.
“May God comfort you among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.” “Ha’makom yenakhem etkhem, betokh sha’ar avelei Tziyon vi’Yerushalayim.” The COVID-19 emergency has had a huge impact on Sholom. For more information, please contact Jeffrey Sherman, jsherman@sholom.com, 952.939.1594.

Mom and Sholom – Connected for Good My mother, Marion Klein, was a resident at Knollwood Place (with my father) and then she moved to the Leo and Doris Hodroff Pavilion for Memory Care last November. The move wasn’t a surprise for us as she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s many years ago. In a very unusual turn of events, my mother also contracted COVID-19 and the combination of the two illnesses was overwhelming. Thankfully, she passed peacefully. As a family, we have talked quite a bit about Sholom and my mother. We don’t have the words to describe the amount of gratitude we have for the tremendous care she received. Even in these bizarre times where Sholom staff is operating in next to impossible conditions, we always knew she was safe and living the best life she could. We will never forget that. Looking back, there was never really a question of, if it were needed, where my parents would live out their days. It was always Sholom. There are a number of other places of care throughout the Twin Cities, but Sholom is and will always be different. My mother always had a strong connection to Sholom – especially from volunteering. But until this last weekend, while going through the things you go through when someone passes away, I never understood the depth of her connection. I came across a speech my mother gave in 2012 when she was honored as a Woman of Valor by the Sholom Auxiliary.

Sholom has feeling – life – a soul. And that’s something you can’t build. It comes from the people who work at Sholom. And my mother loved it. –Steve Klein
In it, she describes a time in her youth when George Kaplan came to her house to speak with her father. My grandfather, Isedor Goldetsky, was a builder and he had some land in St. Paul on Randolph near Snelling where he intended to build some apartments. George said, “Isedor, Sholom needs a new facility more than you need more apartments.” By the time George left the house, he had the land for the Sholom Home. Ironically, my mother’s uncle was one of the first residents. So altogether, I guess you could say it was no surprise my mother was at Sholom. Do we miss her? Of course, we wish she were still here – smiling and laughing in only the way she could. But now, we know she is smiling and laughing with others who have left us too soon. And I’m sure Sholom is part of her, too. With gratitude, Steve Klein, son of Marion Klein

Sholom Adapts to a New Reality
C
OVID-19 thrust Sholom into an emergency response overnight. Three months later, we continue to adapt to our new reality. Barbara Klick, Sholom CEO, said, “The effects of COVID-19 will be with us long into the future and recovery will require generosity, understanding, and patience. Our Sholom team was outstanding, honoring our values while demonstrating resiliency and teamwork, opening their hearts every day to our residents. As the pandemic evolves, our work will be reformed.” Our immediate outlook includes:
• Building upon the tremendous lessons learned through COVID-19, across all facets of Sholom.
• We are following MDH guidelines to allow residents and loved ones to safely visit.
• Honoring transparency with residents, families, and staff will continue to foster trust and strengthen our firm foundation.
• Meeting our community’s need for Sholom’s continuum by developing safe practices to welcome new residents.
• Maintaining connectivity through innovation.
• Continuing to celebrate Sholom’s more than 800 heroes on our staff.
• Investigating reliable ongoing COVID-19 testing until a vaccine is developed and/or much of the population possesses herd immunity.
Barbara continued, “We are embracing the challenge to establish a new rhythm in all that we do. I am optimistic as we begin to adapt to our new reality.”
• Working diligently to contend with the huge financial impact from COVID-19, suffering both a loss in revenue and an increase in expenses. Sholom appreciates the community’s wonderful response and generosity, however, your help is still needed as the virus will be with us for some time.
COVID-19 has had a huge impact on Sholom’s operations, as well as deeply affecting residents, families, and staff. Sholom is most appreciative for the emotional, financial, and in-kind support from the community. For more information, please contact Barbara Klick, Sholom CEO at bklick@sholom.com.

During this pandemic, it is important that we all do what we can to support those that are affected by COVID-19. Although we cannot be there physically to support the residents at Sholom, we were glad to make a donation to the Relief Fund in order to help the staff be able to provide what is needed for the seniors who are living there at this unprecedented time. –Carole & Marty Kaplan 7

“The flowers this summer are beautiful. I love helping to arrange them for residents and staff.”
As Jews we always want to help the most vulnerable in our community. COVID-19 has brought this more to light. I was moved to support Sholom’s COVID-19 Relief Fund to help the vulnerable seniors in our community. –Sharon Lazarus
When I was in the rehabilitation unit at Sholom last year, so many staff people helped me to get better. When I saw the announcement about the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund, I knew I could help the people who had helped me and who in turn were helping others. I was moved to write a check. I appreciate all that you do at Sholom. –Miriam Segall

“It’s HAPPY hour!”
“So many people have sent us cards while we are in our rooms. It is so nice of them.”
Capp's Cap continued from page 1 We believe our responsibility is to steward their funds and continue their tradition of giving where they placed importance. We are proud to carry on their legacy.” Marty Capp started his business in the late 1940’s, with little in his pocket, but believing that slow and steady hard work will bring success. He was raised on the west side of St. Paul, maintaining his dedication to the Jewish and civic communities. Esther Capp loved being with people, and excelled at helping those in need. Esther was a true “people person,” self-less, and loved by all. Susan noted, “Grandma was social, big-hearted, and a connector.” Both Martin and Esther were active in several organizations in the Jewish and general communities. The Capps were an observant Jewish family living in St. Paul. Lisa paraphrased her father’s words, “St. Paul must have places where Jews can be themselves and feel comfortable being Jewish. We need families who can sustain our Jewish organizations and participate in them. Dad felt very lucky he could make a difference through his support of the community.” Lisa took this to heart and recently served as a member of the Sholom Foundation Board of Directors.
Susan commented, “As grandchildren we learned that our grandparent’s philanthropy was motivated by a desire to benefit the community, knowing that not everyone is in a position to contribute.” The Capps also understood that their gifts encouraged others to be generous. Susan continued, “We donate just as my grandparents did and we, too, hope our contributions encourage more charitable giving.” The Capp Family generously contributed to Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign. Lisa Capp noted, “We strive to emulate the care my parents demonstrated for others. We are thankful we can support Sholom’s Capital Campaign.” (See page 2 for a Capital Campaign update.) Sholom is grateful to the Capp Family for their financial support and communal insight. To emulate the Capp’s example by establishing an Endowment Fund at the Sholom Foundation, to contribute to one of the many funds and programs, or to request information, please call Joel Mandel, 952.939.1593, jmandel@sholom.com.
Emergency Relief Campaign continued from page 1 virus. With swift and urgent action, contributions were sought to save lives and meet profound needs created by COVID-19. The community responded with generosity and heartfelt acclaim. Sholom Foundation President Steve Gottlieb said, “I am proud the Foundation’s dedicated efforts have yielded tremendous results. The community understands that ensuring care and services for our residents must continue, without fail.” Foundation Board member Debra Spencer wrote, “Craig and I feel good about contributing to the COVID-19 Relief Fund. My mother had a wonderful experience at the Shaller Family Sholom East campus while recovering from hip surgery. Not only was her rehab terrific, but also, the extra care, attention, and precautions because of COVID-19 put us all at ease.” As you read this issue of the Circle of Life, please remember how much your generosity of spirit and financial resources make all the difference! you for your magnanimous gifts to the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund, for your in-kind donations, and for ensuring that Sholom will continue to thrive within the Twin Cities Community.

Minneapolis Jewish Federation Helps Out! The Minneapolis Jewish Federation awarded $401,000 to Sholom to help offset and recover from the devastating financial ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sholom is most grateful to the leadership of the Federation for its foresight and generosity. There could not be a better example of Tikun Olam, repairing the world, than the support demonstrated by the Minneapolis Jewish Federation for the vulnerable seniors in our community. Sholom further applauds the Federation and is proud to be a partner in the Kadima Campaign – building the future together to raise additional funds to confront the ongoing needs necessitated by COVID-19.
Thank you to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation for your support and generosity – from all of us at Sholom.

n March, 2020, the CARES ACT, Coronavirus Aid Relief, and Economic Security Act was passed to provide relief from the negative effects of COVID-19. The SECURE ACT, Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement was signed in December, 2019, to encourage Americans to increase their retirement savings. The effects of these new laws not only help individuals, but also charitable organizations like the Sholom Foundation. The CARES ACT – • Provides a new deduction for charitable donors who don’t itemize when filing taxes. A tax deduction up to $300, reducing tax liability, is allowed for cash contributions made in 2020 to charitable organizations, such as the Sholom Foundation. • Increases the deduction limit up to 100% of a donor’s adjusted gross income for cash gifts made to charitable organizations like Sholom Foundation, for individuals who itemize their tax returns. The SECURE ACT – • One provision of the new law requires non-spouse inherited IRA’s (with some exceptions) to be distributed within 10 years, modifying the practice of extending the IRA distribution over several years. As a result, many
10
people are thinking about the option of a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) as a way to reduce tax liability while benefitting organizations like the Sholom Foundation. Through the CRT, the donor will receive payments over their lifetime or up to a specific period of years, and at the end of the trust, the remaining principal is distributed to support a charity like Sholom Foundation. These Acts include many options which may offer you and charitable organizations such as the Sholom Foundation many advantages. We recommend you consult with your financial advisor to better understand the details of these new laws to determine how your particular situation may benefit. For more information on making a gift to Sholom Foundation through your IRA, gifts of appreciated securities or real estate, and retirement benefits, please contact Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593, jmandel@sholom.com. Seeking Colorful Artwork to Help the Healing Process
R
egaining strength and good health after an illness or injury requires diligent therapy, a professional staff and, great encouragement. You will find all this and more at Sholom’s Transitional Care Units (TCU) on both campuses. A bright and cheerful atmosphere is also a valuable component! In an article in Art World in 2019, “Fine Art is Good Medicine,” Menachem Wecker writes on the introduction of art into health care settings. Wecker found strong proponents who support “art is good medicine.” A great deal of research reinforces his thesis. Jane Lifson, a community member with strong ties to Sholom, firmly believes that a colorful environment is a factor in wellness. She is helping to transform Sholom’s TCU rooms into beautiful and joyful spaces with colorful artwork and pictures. To accomplish this project, Jane is seeking donations of artwork for Sholom. If you are an artist, Jane would love to talk to you. If you are not an artist but you have bright and colorful artwork stored at home, this message is also for you.
Jane is seeking: Painted artwork or photographs that are full of color and interest such as landscapes, faces, stills, abstracts; think lively and colorful. • Art that is framed and ready to hang with glass or plexiglass. • Artist submitted copies are acceptable. • Please, no nudes, religious pieces, or black and white photos or art. Approximately 1.5’ high x 2.5’ wide (smaller pieces are acceptable if we can group 3 or 4 together). Larger pieces may possibly be accommodated. If you have artwork you would like to donate which you think meets these criteria, please email a picture of the artwork to Jane at: jane@lifson.org, and include your contact information, or please call her at 763.300.8303. Jane is eager to talk with you and share the details. Thank you!

At Sholom, There is Alwa
“What beautiful bouquets! You’d think it was my birthday.”
Residents stage radio – controlled auto races.
On behalf of the Bentson Foundation, we are proud to assist Sholom through the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund. Our valued relationship with Sholom goes back several years. We know Sholom has been impacted by this awful disease. We also understand the importance of helping to ensure adequate staffing, materials, and resources to keep Sholom’s residents and staff as safe and healthy as possible. We are very happy to support Sholom in this vital effort. –Judi Dutcher, Executive Director, Bentson Foundation
“Getting fresh air, I can get a break from my mask.”
“It isn’t like sitting across the table from my kids, but I can still keep an eye on them!”
“I have been thinking about Sholom recently. Some years ago my mother-in-law was in town from New York City, at the time for back surgery. After surgery, she was in rehab at Sholom Home where she was cared for in extraordinary fashion. Over the years my wife Gabrielle and I have visited many Sholom residents and it’s easy to imagine my own mother, living in a similar facility in Florida, walking your halls. For me, Sholom Home sits at the intersection of deep Jewish culture, tradition, respect and vulnerability and I have great admiration for the work you do.” –David Parish

ys Something Happening! MindVue’s team is a perfect combination of Senior Care, Health Care, and Technology, the result of which is delivery of extraordinary 360-degree video of visual entertainment from across the globe viewed through virtual reality goggles. With appreciation to our Mom, Eddy Cohen whose initial excitement spurred making this happen for the residents at Sholom. –Eddy Cohen’s family “Today we are touring Paris and the French countryside and I don’t have to leave my room.”
Hand crafted mask – A Sholom Special. Eddy Cohen thoroughly enjoys the experience of virtual reality goggles as often as possble.
We at MindVue are committed to providing the largest positive impact for seniors through our work. We are thrilled to be working with Sholom and look forward to providing many fun experiences for residents. –Chris Allen, President MindVue - VR Wellness for Seniors Celebrating a 63rd anniversary – from afar.
