2020 Kadima Campaign Supports Sholom’s Response to COVID-19 In the words of our ancestors, “Deeds of giving are the very foundations of the world” (Mishna Pirkei Avot) and “Tzedakah (charity) outweighs all the other commandments” (Talmud, Bava Batra). Thank you for your generosity and for continuing the tradition of giving.
T
he impact of COVID-19 on Sholom has been overwhelming — from skyrocketing costs of testing and personal protective equipment expense to lost revenue, yet Sholom is resolute in maintaining its mission to every resident and to our community. The median age of individuals we serve is 86 years old, an extremely vulnerable population which is at a disproportionate risk for serious illness as a result of COVID-19. Sholom’s concerted actions since the beginning of the pandemic demonstrate an unwavering commitment to safeguard the emotional and physical health of residents and staff. Arriving at the most opportune time, Sholom is thrilled to be the recipient of a $1.8 million grant from The Kadima Campaign of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation. These very welcome funds will assist Sholom in navigating the impact of COVID-19. In addition, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation generously presented Sholom with emergency funding of $401,000 early in the pandemic.
Realizing the great need a few months into the pandemic, leaders in the Jewish Community, through the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, created the Kadima Campaign which “will benefit every corner of the Jewish community, providing community-wide collaboration for COVID-19 recovery planning and implementation, and to enhance community security in Jewish agencies in Minnesota and the Dakotas.”

Cindy & Joel Shapiro – Service, Generosity, and Compassion
A
quote from a volume on Cindy and Joel Shapiro’s bookshelf reads, “There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer. With it beats the spirit of service, generosity, and compassion…,” an impeccable description of this dedicated community-minded couple. Sholom is extremely grateful for Cindy and Joel’s generosity of time, resources, and enthusiasm. Both Shapiros were raised in the Twin Cities by families who understood the importance of community and supporting organizations such as Sholom. Cindy said, “Growing up we always knew how essential Sholom was. My parents instilled a sense of social responsibility for the Jewish and larger communities. We continue their tradition of supporting Sholom and its continuum designed to meet the needs of seniors through residential options, health care, and social services.

Joel recalls that his Aunt, Shirley Jaffe, was a resident at Knollwood Place Apartments until she passed away three years ago. Joel said with a smile, “She had a wonderful experience living on the Sholom campus. Her schedule was so full, it was difficult to find time for us to get together!” continued on page 3

Sholom’s Care Comes First Captial Campaign Announces Next Steps
P
olly & Mike Saxon, and Amy & Stan Baratz, Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign Co-Chairs recently shared a priority list of $8 million in opportunities (please see page 4 for details) vital to meet the needs of Sholom’s residents and program participants. The $8 million of improvements include completion of the first floor renovations at Knollwood Place Apartments, renovating the Sholom Home West main lobby, Rehabilitation and Occupational Therapy center and other public areas on the first floor. Using evidenced-based research, new flooring is proposed for the Hodroff Pavilion for Memory Care designed for individuals living with memory and cognitive issues. When these priority needs are fulfilled, along with the myriad of improvements already in place, the Capital Campaign will have changed the face of Sholom!
The co-chairs continued, “We are energized by this challenge and are confident the community will wholeheartedly contribute to these outstanding needs. The momentum is building to raise $8 million and everyone’s help and support is invited!” Sholom Foundation Executive Director, Joel Mandel noted, “The legacy of our Community’s generosity will be long-lasting, with transformative results.” The Co-Chairs reflected, “Welcoming the New Year, 5781, we are proud to recognize the accomplishments made possible by hundreds of donors to the Campaign. The campuses are safer and more secure, we have a new parking lot, and improved air conditioning systems, expanded Wi-Fi, and residents are receiving better care, thanks to new equipment and upgraded medical records systems. The beautifully remodeled first floor of the Knollwood Place Apartment building is a testament to the generosity of so many donors and the desire to renew Sholom.” Barbara Klick, Sholom CEO, remarked, “The Capital Campaign has provided residents, families, and staff with renewed inspiration towards a commitment of continuous improvement in our care, services, technology and physical plant. Our deserving residents are the grateful beneficiaries of such wonderful generosity. Providing funding for these important improvements help us continue the great legacy of Sholom as a tremendous community resource. We appreciate the continuing support.” To donate and play a role in Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign, please call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593 or jmandel@sholom.com.
The beautiful new lobby at Knollwood Place Apartments provides a warm, welcoming, and relaxed atmosphere for residents and guests.
Sholom Responds continued from page 1 Sholom extends its sincere appreciation to the Kadima Campaign Chairs Kris & John MacDonald and Cindi & Harold Goldfine, and Jon Halper, Gil Mann, Todd Leonard, and David Orbuch who all serve on the Principal Working Group; to the Community Distribution Committee comprised of Alex Bakkum, Lisa Furman, Alan Gibson, Valerie Kreps, Gabrielle Parish, Joe Thiegs, Seth Togal; to the Community Recovery Planning Committee chaired by Robin Neidorf, and the JCRC Security Committee chaired by Gil Mann; to Brad Birnberg, Jon Halper, Todd Leonard, and Steve Machov who served on the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund; and for the leadership of Jim Cohen, Minneapolis Jewish Federation CEO. Sholom is extremely grateful for this grant and is proud to be working with the Minneapolis Jewish Federation’s Kadima Campaign. This magnificent gift will help Sholom meet an array of challenges, costs, and opportunities created in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic: • Purchase electrostatic cleaners, supplemental housekeeping staff, and sanitizing measures to prevent and control infection and safeguard residents and staff. • Provide puzzles, books, cards, craft items and other individualized program supplies required when physical distancing ended large group programming pivoted to in-room sessions. • Cover additional costs for staffing and supplies needed for meal delivery to rooms and apartments instituted with the closing of congregate dining rooms. • Help provide iPads, laptops and other high-tech devices
which enable face-to-face contact between residents and loved ones. These devices are also invaluable for leisure activities accessing programs via the internet. • Install advanced electronic contactless kiosks which will take temperatures and check physical symptoms of staff at the start of each shift and visitors upon entry. • Meet the costs for overtime and on-call temporary staff (to cover ill or quarantined employees per MDH guidelines) and expanded infection control education. • Produce virtual tours of Sholom’s campuses and programs to offer a detailed view and information as part of the new resident admission process. • Establish “remote monitoring” as a new model of care. Remote monitoring enables individuals living independently in the community on or off a Sholom campus to have medical monitoring and intervention using technology (telehealth, telemedicine, and remote monitoring technology) under the aegis of Sholom. • Further professional leadership development opportunities to train and prepare future leaders to work in the post-COVID-19 era with new safeguards, guidelines and methodologies. Barbara Klick, Sholom CEO said, “At a time like this, we cannot be forced to make budgetary choices that compromise the safety and well-being of our community – and thanks to the Kadima Campaign, we won’t have to!” For more information, please contact Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593 or jmandel@sholom.com.
Cindy and Joel Shapiro continued from page 1 Cindy and Joel reiterated, “We are passionate about Sholom, as volunteers and donors, because supporting our community is the right thing to do.” Joel, along with his brothers and their families, have established an endowment fund, the Alan, Joel, & Robert Shapiro Family Fund, to help ensure financial support for Sholom long into the future. Volunteering is ingrained in the Shapiros. Both Cindy and Joel serve on Sholom’s Care Comes First Capital Campaign Cabinet and Cindy is a member of the Sholom Foundation Board. Additionally, Cindy has recently assumed the title of President of the Temple Israel Foundation Board. Joel is a past board member of Temple Israel and Temple Israel’s Foundation, as well as the Jewish National Fund.
The Shapiros said, “We are honored to be part of the Capital Campaign team that is raising funds to ensure Sholom remains up-to-date and meets the needs of the community.” They continued, “Along with celebrating Jewish customs, traditions, and holidays with our family, we also want our children and grandchildren to understand the importance of giving back, supporting Sholom, and other programs. We learned from our parent’s examples and we strive to transmit these lessons to the next generations.” Joel concluded, “Tzdakah is not just a one-time endeavor, rather, it is an ongoing responsibility and we feel very lucky we can contribute. Our hope is that other individuals will follow our example with their own support of Sholom.”

Care Comes First Capital Campaign Confirms riorities
J
ust over three years ago Sholom launched a bold initiative, the Care Comes First Captal Campaign, that to date has secured nearly $18.5 million from valued supporters. Thanks to the generosity of many donors, Sholom has been able to improve many projects at the Knollwood Place Apartments, upgrade technology, provide resources to help train and retain staff, complete projects to ensure Sholom remains a vibrant place of care and community, and much more. As the calendar year comes to a close, Campaign Co-Chairs Amy & Stan Baratz and Polly & Mike Saxon are delighted to present these remaining funding opportunities: • Completing the funding for the first floor renovations at Knollwood Place Apartments. The majority of the costs have been covered; however a gap remains to meet residual expenses. • Providing a match for Sholom’s Employee Retirement Plan. Sholom’s 403(b) plan is a welcome avenue to recognize staff for its diligent efforts. This benefit is a vital recruitment tool in an extremely competitive market place. Due to COVID-19 costs,
Sholom temporarily suspended the employer’s match in June 2020, and there is a strong desire to have the match reinstated. • Replacing carpet and flooring in the Hodroff Pavilion for Memory Care. Upgrades will emphasize durability, comfort, and most important, color and design selected specifically for individuals living with memory and cognitive impairments, guided by evidence-based research. • Renovating the Sholom Home West main lobby, kitchen, deli, public restrooms, and updating furniture and fixtures throughout the first floor. From its inception, the Campaign has prioritized upgrading and modernizing resident areas to offer added comfort, ensure a homelike environment, and to attract new residents to the campus. • Renovating the Rehabilitation Center at the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. New surroundings, equipment, and an improved Occupational Therapy studio will modernize the program. If sufficient funds are available, a significant feature will be real-life rehabilitation modules simulating every-day scenarios to encourage rehabilitation and recovery. • Modernizing the Sholom Home West’s physical plant, including upgrades to the elevators, replacing the roof and chillers, upgrade/replace boilers, plumbing, and HVAC components. Some windows will be replaced as necessary.
Guests and residents at Knollwood Place Apartments will be graciously welcomed at the new reception desk.

Knollwood Residents are eagerly awaiting to have lunch in the new Nosh Nook.
These projects present opportunities totaling $8 million dollars, and the community is invited to participate in the Campaign to help secure Sholom’s future. For more information, please contact Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593 or jmandel@sholom.com.
Residents of Knollwood Place Apartments will enjoy meals in the beautiful and very comfortable dining room.
A Friend of Sholom Boosts Staff Morale When it is Needed Most
T
ables filled with Farmer’s Market produce lined the parking lots at each campus on an October afternoon, overflowing with brightly colored carrots, a plethora of potatoes, crimson beets, crisp apples, leafy cabbage, and ripening pears. The sumptuous produce was available for Sholom’s staff, made possible by a generous friend of Sholom. Even tote bags to carry the produce were provided. Longtime staff members Bonnie Goslinga and Sue Crawford exclaimed, “The Farmer’s Market was a terrific idea, and the produce was delicious,” a sentiment shared by many. In August, a gift from the same individual served a delicious middle-eastern style meal to staff, at no charge, delivered piping hot from the food trucks parked at each of Sholom’s campuses. Also receiving a fleece-lined Sholom-inscribed jacket, every employee raved about the event.
necessitated by COVID-19. Employee determination resonated with the donor who chose to acknowledge Sholom’s staff for their tireless efforts before, during, and after COVID. This generosity successfully delivered a major boost to staff morale and engagement, and the timing was perfect.
In late spring, 2020, a very generous anonymous donor, contacted the Sholom Foundation, knowledgeable of COVID-19’s devastating impact. He believed there was a need to boost employee morale and camaraderie. The donor was very impressed with Sholom’s staff and the delivery of care and services, and even more so with the disciplined manner in which Sholom addressed the pandemic. Clearly, Sholom’s dedicated staff members were the real heroes, stepping up and accepting more responsibilities
This gift helps to recognize the tremendous work performed by Sholom’s devoted staff members. To contribute to this and other important efforts at Sholom, please contact Joel Mandel, Executive Director of the Sholom Foundation at jmandel@sholom.com or 952.939.1593.
This gift will fund five to six employee events throughout the year. Each interactive and health conscious activity will foster esprit de corps and encourage staff enjoyment and fun. Richard Lutz, Sholom’s VP of Human Resources said, “Sholom is thrilled with this gift. We can now offer outstanding events we’d previously not been able to include in our annual budget. Sholom’s staff joins me in expressing sincere appreciation to this special individual.”
Staff thoroughly enjoyed shopping for produce and the delicious meal, thanks to a wonderful friend of Sholom.

Stunning Renovations at Knollwood Place Apartments Enhance a Community of Friends Touring through the beautifully renovated lobby at the Knollwood Place Apartments, on to the Fitness Center, the Town Hall Auditorium, the dining room and Nosh Nook, and lastly through the program spaces, one marvels at the tremendous efforts that made these magnificent changes possible. A heartfelt thank you is extended to each Care Comes First Capital Campaign donor, to the Capital Campaign Cabinet, and to the leadership of Sholom, Sholom Foundation, and the Sholom Auxiliary. Together, these visionaries possessed the foresight to recognize the need and the determination to accomplish the goal.
meeting for a walk, shopping, participating in all that Sholom offers, and above all, sharing a laugh. “If it weren’t for Sholom, we would never have met, and look what we would be missing,” Marge exclaimed. Libby concurred with a huge smile.
Gathering on a lovely fall afternoon, three sets of friends, wearing masks and sitting physically distanced, enthusiastically discussed the delight in living at Knollwood. Each one declared their thrill with the beautiful new surroundings. Removing masks only for their photographs, these residents shared their stories. Libby Goldman spoke up, “One of the nicest things about this wonderful building is the opportunity to meet new people and if you are lucky, you will find new friends.” With gales of laughter wafting down the hall, Libby Goldman and Marge Sussman recalled the start of their friendship. Both were living alone and sorely missed being around people. Yearning for the closeknit community of the Knollwood Place Apartments, each moved into the building on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus early in 2019. One morning while sharing coffee and a muffin, their friendship immediately blossomed. Known for their terrific sense of humor and their love of fun, Libby and Marge spend time together

Marhyam and Pearly
Pearly Rudin and Mahryam Daniels were shirt-tail acquaintances before becoming residents at Knollwood Place Apartments, but their friendship began to grow, reconnecting at Knollwood. Pearly’s mother was one of the first tenants in the building and Marhyam, through her volunteer work at the Sabes J.C.C., was quite familiar with Sholom’s housing programs. Each instinctively knew Knollwood Place Apartments would be their right choice. Today Pearly and Marhyam spend much of the day together and enjoy each other’s company. Marhyam added, “What a thrill to be living here! Knollwood has always been a welcoming community, and now it’s even better.” Pearly added, “We’ve looked forward to the end of the construction. Now I get to re-establish a daily rhythm with my new friend.” Dalia Katz and Sharon Milavitz, met and became friends through Sholom, but years before either thought about living on the Sholom campus. Down the road, Knollwood Place Apartments became home for Dalia when she realized living alone was no longer safe and Sharon was unhappy living by herself – her house was just too big. With both at Knollwood, their long-standing friendship continues to flourish. They sit at the same table in the dining room, accompany each other on appointments,
take a stroll around Knollwood’s pond, and even finish each other’s sentences. Dalia and Sharon value being just an elevator ride away from each other. They love the new surroundings and cannot wait for the Nosh Nook to reopen. Sharon said, “The building is gorgeous and it makes life here even better. Living alone is a shallow life; I feel alive when I see everybody here.” Dalia added, “I feel fortunate to live here and it is like I have a second family. I am so thankful we have a place like this in the Twin Cities. The remodeling is more than I could have imagined.”
