Annual Employee Award Recipients Honored at the Sholom Annual Meeting Twelve Sholom employees were honored this year. Nominated by their peers, Sholom clients, and families, these employees are compassionate, capable, and give of themselves every day. Here are just a few of the comments submitted in nomination of these special individuals: CUSTOMER SERVICE EXCELLENCE AWARDS BettyAnn Baustert—Leasing Coordinator, Knollwood Place Apartments “BettyAnn does a fantastic job keeping tenants well cared for. She is a strong advocate for them and makes their needs known. One tenant told BettyAnn that her presence and work makes him happy to live at Sholom.” Jordan Clafin—Nutrition Services Cook, Menorah Plaza Apartments “Day in and day out, Jordan Clafin displays extreme patience, kindness, softness and politeness. long with our Sholom President, Chuck Selcer, I had the great pleasure to recognize our outstanding employees at our recent annual Sholom Community Alliance Annual Meeting. These employees were chosen for their excellence in customer service, caregiving and leadership and have made a difference at Sholom! Sholom employees are the foundation for all our services. To keep quality care and services of our residents, tenants and clients as our focus we need a strong cultural tapestry. To this end, the wellbeing of our employees is vital. When employees are educated (growth opportunities), have the necessary tools, and feel valued, they become engaged. Engaged employees raise our service standards and the experiences of our customers. Remarkable things happen when the flywheel starts moving—look out! I commit to working with all stakeholders to make this the best place to work and receive care and services! Please join me in this vision.

Carole Davidson—Susie Selcer Volunteer Leadership Award Recipient Sholom has been a family affair

This award pays tribute to individuals whose work within the Sholom organization and the greater community exemplifies the outstanding leadership, integrity, spirit, and tzedekah of the late Susie Selcer. Carole Davidson received this award at the Sholom Annual Meeting in July. Carole Davidson and her family have considerable history with Sholom. Her grandmother, father, uncle, mother-in-law and father-in-law were all residents at Sholom—some in St. Paul and others at the Ackerberg Sholom West campus. Her mother, Gladys Winerman, resided at Sholom Home West until she passed away in 2013. A Sholom volunteer for over 20 years, Carole served as Auxiliary president and chaired many Sholom Balls and Food For Your Soul annual fundraisers, annual fashion shows and Mother’s Day Teas. She has volunteered on serviceto-residents committees, at the Stanley & Barbara Cohn Gift Shop and at the annual Israeli Scouts events. Carole felt especially privileged to volunteer for several years alongside the late Evelyn Shore in the ACADEMY program created by Evelyn to provide ongoing opportunities for campus residents that promote brain health and interaction with others. Carole got to know many residents, families and staff at Sholom West, and when saw how much her mother enjoyed the musical programs, Carole established a fund in memory of her husband, Stephen, for annual support of additional music programs.

Carole and her mom, Gladys, sharing a beautiful day at the 2001 Butterfly Release on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus

Serving the Greater Community Carole is committed to several other organizations in the greater community as well, serving on both the Beth El Synagogue and Jewish Family & Children Service (JFCS) boards, chairing the JFCS Annual Benefit, and JFCS Mental Health Seders. Carole also works on the Hag Sameach program—shopping, packing and delivering gift packages. She has volunteered at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital, the Minnesota Recovery Connection’s Walk for Recovery, and is now assisting with the new senior center at JFCS in Naples, Florida. For over thirty years, Carole has led a life of volunteerism, leading and mentoring others—including her family who is following in her footsteps, sharing their time and talents, helping to make a difference in many lives. Carole Davidson’s commitment to both her Jewish and secular communities clearly emulates the spirit of the Susie Selcer Volunteer Leadership Award of which she is so deserving.

A New Year’s Message From. . . Chuck Selcer, Sholom President As I look back on this past year, I find myself marveling at all that has been accomplished. Thank you to Sholom’s Interim CEO, Peg Birk, for her leadership during the past year and keeping the organization on a solid path during this time of transition. I am also grateful for efforts of our staff, committed lay leadership and wonderful volunteers. I believe the upcoming year will be very exciting! Check this out: • The good work of the Sholom Board’s CEO search committee culminated in the selection of Barbara Klick, RN, MBA as Sholom’s new CEO. Barbara is an experienced leader whose foremost concern is the care and safety of those we serve. In just a few months, Barbara’s positive presence is making an impact on our residents, tenants, families and Sholom staff. She is accessible, a good listener and a problem solver. • We understand that an organization of this nature must continually make improvements in all of our facilities to remain relevant in the expanding world of eldercare. Our committees continue their work on plans and options for repositioning and upgrading the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. • Our “Catalysts” team of Sholom employees of various disciplines and strengths is advancing toward our goal to take the “best of the best” of customer service trends to develop Sholom’s own unique customer service standards. The team is developing a detailed tactical implementation plan and a number of changes have already been implemented! New employee orientation has been re-vamped and continues to improve with each new class! They have also begun consistently using “Everyone Deserves Sholom” as their motto. I close with a quick Hebrew lesson. Sholom (spelled Shalom or Sholom) is understood around the world to mean “peace” or a greeting, bidding “hello” or “farewell.” But, Sholom is more than simply peace; it is a complete peace—a feeling of contentment, completeness, wholeness, wellbeing and harmony. In this context, I think you will agree: Everyone deserves Sholom. On behalf of the Board and staff of Sholom, wishing everyone a new year of health, happiness and Sholom. Shana Tova,

Mike Saxon, Sholom Foundation President I am proud to report for our fiscal year ending September 30, 2016, Sholom Foundation will provide over $1.25 million to Sholom in endowment distributions, grants and estate gifts. Here are just a few of the ways our fundraising efforts enhance lives at Sholom: • The Sholom Healthcare Academy provides rigorous in-house certification training for nursing assistants along with a 50-hour customer service component unique to our metropolitan area. Staff that is welltrained and motivated will provide a better experience for those we serve. • Scholarship assistance to help Sholom staff further their education in order to better serve our residents. This includes a collaborative Licensed Practical Nursing degree with Rassmussen College. • Multi-year grants to significantly increase therapeutic recreational programs engaging our residents in music, art, writing, movement, pottery, education, day trips and intergenerational experiences that enhance mind, body and spirit. • Dollars to help ensure the care experience at Sholom is provided at a considerably higher level than State reimbursements and restrictive mandated fees allow. This support for Sholom only occurs with the help of dedicated volunteers and staff, AND the generosity of our community. In just about every culture, there exists a core value of honoring and caring for those who took care of us, creating a legacy of love and respect. Sholom is a crucial community resource that honors and exemplifies this value. In this Jewish New Year of 5777, please contemplate the WHY of your philanthropic giving. The insert in this issue contains many ways you can maximize the impact of your giving to benefit both Sholom long into the future and you and your loved ones, as well, creating your own legacy along the way. Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and peaceful new year,

Why Sholom Matters . . .

Arnie Lerman—“I Like it Here!”

A

rnie Lerman is a genuinely nice guy. A Bentson Assisted Living resident for six years, Arnie can usually be found somewhere in the vicinity of the entrance to the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus. Perhaps he’s on a couch reading the newspaper or a magazine. An avid reader, Arnie is seldom without reading materials at hand. He also enjoys chatting with the volunteers who bring their dogs to visit with the Sholom residents. Arnie is the kind of guy who can converse with anyone, pretty much about anything. At the age of 98, he says that most of his “education” has been gained from reading and “life experiences.” He met his wife, Toby of blessed memory, at the age of 16, married her at 22, spent three years in the armed forces and worked in the shoe repair business until he was 78. Then, because he was still a “youngster,” he spent six more years working at the Jewish Community Center, always interacting with others, always learning something new. Coming to live at Bentson was a good decision for Arnie. “I like it here. There are always people around and things going on. I participate in the things I enjoy, especially the weekly current events discussion group. I don’t always agree with everyone’s opinion, but I listen, and if I still don’t agree with someone’s point of view, I agree to disagree!” Arnie says he has a good life at Bentson. “I don’t go to every activity, but I like that this is a busy place with people coming and going, opportunities to meet new folks, you know . . . I get up around 5:30 a.m., have breakfast about 7:30 a.m., exercise three times a week and fill in the rest of my days with reading, visiting with other campus residents and staff, volunteers – human and canine – what’s not to like?”

Paul Ross—An Extraordinary Volunteer

P

aul Ross is by all accounts one of the most hardworking of our Sholom volunteers. He is an outstanding member of the Jewish Community and has dedicated many resources and a lot of time to serving it. No one actually knows how many years Paul has been touching lives at Sholom, but we never want him to stop. Out of many Sholom programs Paul has helped grow, two have special meaning and enjoy constant success.

1. Current Events is a weekly program held every Saturday afternoon in the Nosh Nook at the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus, during which a discussion leader and Sholom tenants discuss the week’s political and world events. Paul has been the primary discussion leader since the program began many years ago. With additional help from volunteers Al Stern and Mitch Fink, the program has branched out in the community, inviting knowledgeable people to share thoughts with Sholom attendees. 2. The Music & Memory Program, inspired by the documentary “Alive Inside,” was developed for individuals with dementia. Through Paul’s hard work and determination, this national program was established at the Shaller Family Campus. With the combined efforts of both staff and volunteers, donated iPODS are filled with music of an individual’s life—music that actually helps to “waken” areas of the brain that respond positively to recognizable songs and music. Volunteers and staff help residents to listen to the music—a very heartwarming experience. The results are happier, less agitated, more responsive residents and appreciative families. In fact, this impactful program is now expanding to the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. And it all started with Paul’s determination to bring this program to Sholom. Paul is a gift to Sholom for his unparalleled dedication and we are infinitely grateful for this gift.

A Letter from Susie Held Sholom Auxiliary President

Dear friends, It has been a great year as the Auxiliary President, thanks to all of you and a special thanks to Nancy Getzkin for her guidance along the way! Here are just a few highlights: Our Ladies Night Out with Designer Bag Bingo was a good night for all! Good food, wine & fun had by all! Be sure to come again this fall! Our 6th Annual Food for your Soul event on June 16th was a great success with over 300 guests. We raised just about $100,000 to support programs at Sholom. My sincere appreciation, on behalf of all those who benefit from the Auxiliary’s support, to Rollye Rinkey, her committee and ALL the hosts, volunteers, and sponsors who made this very important and FUN fundraiser such a wonderful success. Our Mother’s Day Teas at both campuses, along with many other special programs sponsored by the Auxiliary continue to delight our Sholom residents, family and friends. As always, our Knishes are Delicious! Be sure to order some for the holidays. And, speaking of knishes, join us on October 19 at the Annual Fall Luncheon when we present our incredible Knish Ladies with the Woman of Valor Award. We are so very pleased to use the funds we raise, in part, to sponsor the fun and impactful Live 2B Healthy® exercise programs at Knollwood Place and Roitenberg Family Assisted Living on the Ackerberg Sholom West Campus and at the Bentson Assisted Living and Roitenberg Adult Day Center on the Shaller Sholom East Campus. Finally, I have some exciting news to share with you! I have accepted a full time position at Sholom as Manager of Corporate and Community Engagement (formally held by Jeff Sherman). This is a great new challenge for me and I’m excited to start my new role. As you can imagine, I will be quite busy with my work at Sholom and will not be able to remain in my role as president of the Sholom Auxiliary, but will continue to be involved with the Auxiliary as the Sholom staff liaison. So, we are in need of a president for the Auxiliary. Please don’t let the title of ‘president’ discourage you from thinking about taking on this role. I’ve had a wonderful year as president! AND...Nancy and I are both here to assist. We already have lots of plans in place, so the coming year is looking great. Please contact me at sheld@sholom.com or 612.910.1827. I look forward to our continued work together to make the residents and tenants of Sholom feel at home! Thank you!

Creating Your Legacy Through the Endowment Path In this Circle of Life issue we are examining the “WHY?” of philanthropy. What are your practical and emotional reasons for considering a legacy gift such as an endowment? By thinking about those reasons, looking at the various ways to make a meaningful impact, each of us begin or continue our journey of making a difference in the lives of others. The dollar value of a legacy can be of any size; whatever you have to share after you are gone is the right amount. But it’s the “Why” you want to create that legacy that can be so very meaningful to you and future generations:

Our Tradition. Jewish tradition teaches that one of our key responsibilities is to make the world a better place for future generations–Tikun Olam. Many of our friends who support Sholom with annual gifts are establishing Sholom Foundation endowment funds to ensure that their annual giving will continue long after they are gone. Others have included Sholom Foundation in their estate plans with the same purpose in mind. Strengthening Sholom. There will always be a need for ongoing financial support that sustains and maintains our facilities, services, programs and staff. An annual distribution from an endowment fund at Sholom Foundation eases some of that financial pressure. A strong endowment gives Sholom the flexibility to remain current and relevant, and provides for a financially stable future, as well.

Personal Satisfaction. Making a real difference by doing something transformational and lasting is highly satisfying. Many endowment donors tell us that by endowing a program or service now when they can witness the impact, they are fulfilling one of their highest personal goals.

To continue to provide for Sholom after you are gone, a gift now or by bequest of approximately 25 times your current annual giving will generate your annual support for Sholom in perpetuity. Give Joel Mandel a call at 952.939.1593 to learn more about Creating Your Legacy through the Endowment Path. Be sure to check out our “Getting to the “Why?” insert in this Circle of Life issue.

The Name Lives on. An endowment fund may carry a donor, family or loved one’s name so the legacy of the donation becomes permanent. Perhaps the most meaningful outcome of creating a named endowment fund is that in doing so, future generations may be encouraged to do the same.

Leave your Legacy. Influence the Future. We invite you to join the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society, honoring those who provide for our elderly loved ones with a commitment to the Sholom Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in Minnesota, through their wills and other charitable gift plans. There is no finer example of the power of giving than what we can achieve together. Our Sholom Foundation Heritage Society members are acknowledged in our publications and recognition walls at both Sholom Campuses.

George Kaplan Left a Legacy of Great Impact on Sholom and the Twin Cities Community

G

eorge Kaplan (1883-1959), demonstrated on a daily basis why he gave so much of himself to his beloved St. Paul Jewish community. Born in Russia to a family of humble means, his family emigrated to Montreal, where as a young man, George taught Hebrew School, instilling in him a lifelong commitment to all forms of Jewish education. Kaplan’s family moved to St. Paul in the early 1900s. By 1905, George founded the Kaplan Paper Box company in his garage and later the Minnesota Envelope Company, and thus began his incredible philanthropic journey in the Jewish community.

Gena Janetka, the only descendent to be named after her great grandfather, is the family guardian of George’s portrait. Located in Gena’s office, the portrait is a tribute to the meaningful legacy George Kaplan left for future generations of his family and the Jewish Community.

As his businesses prospered over the years, Kaplan brought along the Jewish community with him. He was known to give any Jewish person in need of a job a position at one of his companies, and he generously shared his financial resources with several local Jewish institutions, including Talmud Torah and Herzl Camp. George sponsored Jewish immigrants, helping many Jews come to the states to escape the Nazi oppression, giving them employment and financial assistance. Kaplan was very generous in his support of Sholom. In 1957, he was one of the driving forces in establishing the George Kaplan Sholom Residence on Randolph Avenue in St. Paul, which would ultimately merge in 1971 with the Jewish Home for the Aged to become Sholom Home, Inc. A visionary with great compassion, he saw the future for Sholom and shared his resources to make it happen.

Grandchildren, David Toushin and Leslee Shapiro speak of their grandfather’s impactful legacy to the St. Paul community and beyond. They saw him as a man with a tough exterior, yet with a soft and giving heart, whose philanthropy touched just about every Jewish institution in St. Paul. George’s legacy lives on with the George Kaplan Memorial Foundation which continues to provide for many of the very institutions his was instrumental in establishing.

When it’s time to seek memory care, Let Sholom do the caregiving, so you can focus on loving.

BACKER

Create your Bed & Breakfast Legacy and make an impact! There are now over 165 friends and families who actively support the Sholom Bed & Breakfast program. Many of our donors make a monthly gift of $25 or more, while others make an annual donation of $300 or more, some as much as $1,800. These generous donations help Sholom provide compassionate and person-centered care to our Sholom residents. Every Bed & Breakfast benefactor is making a positive impact on our Sholom, and as the number of these donors continues to grow every year, so does the overall impact of this important program. Have you ever thought about what will happen when you are no longer here to support Sholom with your Bed & Breakfast donation? How can you make sure your Bed & Breakfast support continues after you are no longer here to send in your annual contribution? The answer: ENDOW your monthly or annual Bed & Breakfast contribution by establishing your own Sholom Foundation Bed & Breakfast Fund in the amount of $10,000 or more and your gift will provide an annual distribution to Sholom in perpetuity. There are several ways to do this: • Make a tax deductible donation of $10,000 or more to Sholom Foundation to create your own Bed & Breakfast endowment fund. • Create your Bed & Breakfast Fund by transferring appreciated stock that you have held more than one year to Sholom Foundation and receive a tax deduction for the market value AND avoid capital gains tax. • If you are 70 ½ years or older, you are required to make an annual required distribution from your IRA. If you request that your distribution be made directly from your IRA to Sholom Foundation to create your endowment fund, not only is the donation tax deductible, it counts toward your annual required distribution. This law allows these distributions up to $100,000 per year. • If you need your financial assets now, make Sholom Foundation a beneficiary of all or a portion of your retirement fund or life insurance policy upon your death. Check with your advisor about what might be the best way for you to provide for Sholom and benefit yourself and your family as well. And, for more information about how you can create your Bed & Breakfast legacy, call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593.

Gifts & Naming Opportunities For endowment gifts of $10,000 and more, a designated fund, in your name or the name of a loved one, may be established. All funds are acknowledged with plaques on the Walls of Honor at Sholom Home West and the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus. For larger gifts, in addition to establishing a fund, you may wish to dedicate or name specific areas, rooms, equipment, furnishings and programs of the Sholom Community Alliance. For more information call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593.

Sholom Auxiliary Endowment Funds The Sholom Auxiliary provides countless volunteer hours and crucial financial resources for the comfort of Sholom residents. What if you could ensure that your annual support of Sholom Auxiliary would continue when you are no longer here to write that check? You can. Please consider establishing you own named Auxiliary Endowment Fund. To find out more, contact Barbara Brooks at 952.939.1594.

Wishing You a Sweet New Year!

Everyone Deserves Sholom . . .

Sholom (or Shalom): Understood around the world to mean “peace” as well as a greeting bidding someone “hello” or “farewell.” But Sholom is more than simply peace; it is a complete peace—a feeling of contentment, completeness, wholeness, well-being and harmony. In this context, I think you will agree: Everyone Deserves Sholom.” —Chuck Selcer, Sholom Board President “In just about every culture, there exists a core value of honoring and caring for those who took care of us, creating a legacy of love and respect. Sholom is a necessary and unique community resource that honors and exemplifies this value.” —Mike Saxon, Sholom Foundation President • Imagine if there wasn’t a Sholom in the Twin Cities providing care and service to over 800 of our elderly loved ones on any given day. • Now, imagine the difference it would make if ALL of our Sholom friends celebrated this Jewish New Year with a gift to Sholom. Mail, call 952.939.1664 or visit www.sholomfoundation.com to make your impact on Sholom.
