Cups, Fried Eggs, and Unexpected Friendships...Wise and compassionate words from a young volunteer
M
adison Danovsky has been volunteering in memory care for four years now. At seventeen, a seasoned volunteer, Madison runs the weekly Thursday night bingo program at the Hodroff Memory Care Pavilion. She has met and established a special kind of friendship with many residents over the years, getting to know each resident, renewing friendships every week and sadly, losing many of these friends along the way. Madison, a high school senior, has written about her experiences working with Madison with Cece, one of her many our seniors at Sholom for a scholarship friends at Sholom application. An astute young woman who is wise beyond her years, Madison writes about her Sholom friends with compassion and love. These are some of her experiences. “Some of my longest friendships have to be remade every week.” She sits in her wheelchair staring off into the middle of the room, and groaning. “Oh, oh, oh,” as if the sound of her voice is the only thing keeping her anchored to the world around her. I walk through the circle of snoozing figures in the living continued on page 3

e have an exciting story of joy to share with you— Millie! She is a vivacious, 101-year-old woman who lives at Sholom Home West and, in spite of her wheelchair, was thrilled to dance at our KAIROS Alive Music & Dance program. I had the privilege to be a dance partner with our ladies and gentlemen who were dancing on their feet, in Barbara Klick, RN, MBA, Sholom CEO their wheelchairs, in their seats, or with their walkers. We all enjoyed ourselves and Millie was positively glowing! She grabbed the microphone multiple times to tell everyone she is 101 and she loves dancing! This is the best news we can report! continued on page 4

hen I accepted the role as the Community Liaison in Sales & Marketing for Sholom, I thought I knew everything there was to know about Sholom. Sholom is a simple nursing home, likely a person’s last stop on their journey, right? Needless to say, I was wrong! I had no idea of all the different things that actually go on at Sholom!

A Continuum of Care? First, I was overwhelmed with all the acronyms and industry Susie Held jargon! A “continuum of care?” “IL, AL, MC?” What does this actually mean? I soon found out! Sholom is so much more than just a nursing home. Sholom offers a continuum of care, including Independent Living (IL), Assisted Living (AL), Memory Care (MC), HUD Subsidized Apartments, Adult Day services, Home Care, Hospice, home-delivered meals, long-term Skilled Nursing Care as well as short-term rehabilitation. Every Day—A New Adventure Additionally, within each of these areas, there are a multitude of programs going on at any one time. The residents and tenants can be as busy or relaxed as they like. It is such fun to watch the residents and tenants participate in the Live 2 B Healthy® senior exercise program, or singing Karaoke to their favorite songs. While our Therapeutic Recreation staff provides the bulk of activities, it is exciting to see collaborations with other organizations and individuals that provide a variety of music and movement programs, intergenerational programs, classes and study sessions, sculpture, painting, writing, day trips, and so many other life-enrichment opportunities. Truly, our residents and tenants come here to live life to its fullest, together, in a very special community. You want to know the best part? The Sholom seniors are amazing! I am so blessed to be greeted each morning by two of my new friends, ages 100 (soon to be 101) and 92 respectively. We chat about current events before they go on their daily walk around the building. Or there’s the 95-year-old gentleman who comes by my office and gives me advice on life and love. I could go on and on! Sholom’s Best Kept Secret The best kept secret about Sholom? Sholom is filled with Treasures! These treasures are people of all shapes, sizes and abilities that contain wisdom, love, life and laughter. I had given up on starting a conversation with them early on as neither of them seemed happy about my stream of questions. She got her meal first, and dug right in. The kitchen made

hen Dick Picquet came to live at Knollwood Place Apartments last November, he was particularly pleased about its location, the proximity to bus transportation, and the amenities offered. Dick just felt like this was the right place for him.
Moreover, Dick has found out that he is just the right person for Knollwood Place. Along with his genial and outgoing personality, Dick’s profession in loss control and safety has provided him experience in teaching and public speaking. In February, Dick volunteered to facilitate one of the ACADEMY at Sholom’s Great Since he moved in, Dick has found Books video courses: “Presidents’ that there are many opportunities for Greatest Moments,” which is drawing learning and engaging in discussions many interested participants. Care Comes First, and refreshed our strategic plan. • Ensured functionality of all security cameras and updating of all emergency preparedness policies and education. • Connected with leaders of multiple Jewish and secular agencies to leverage and optimize services. We are intent on continuous improvement for our residents, tenants and employees. Sholom is here to serve our community with care, compassion and joy. Let’s keep the momentum going! Let me invite and encourage you to volunteer at Sholom where you will see the life-affirming environment we are providing for our residents with opportunities like the one our Millie so enjoyed (see page 6). Your support with gifts of your time or your resources is deeply appreciated— especially those of you who do both! We are proud of our history and even prouder of what lies ahead. At Sholom, we continue to be the community resource where Care, does indeed, Come First.

Want to Make a Difference in Someone’s Life? And Yours Too? • Volunteer to help with Sholom’s MUSIC & MEMORY™ program? Three years ago a few generous donors purchased iPods and headphones for use by Sholom residents with dementia and cognitive limitations. Staff and volunteers worked with the residents and their loved ones to create and record a personalized program of music from these residents’ lives. Then the volunteers and staff helped the residents listen to the music that held meaning in their lives on a regular basis.
• Expand your mind! Lead a discussion group following video courses from the Great Books Series? The ACADEMY at Sholom has amassed a wonderful and eclectic collection of video courses, ranging in subject matter from “The History of the Broadway Musical,” to “Forgotten Ellis Island,” “Philosophy and the Intelligence of Emotions,” “Great World Religions,” and many more courses to interest our residents and tenants as well as guests from the community.

Don’t Be Fooled by These Myths About Women Donors They don’t give big donations . . . They are uninformed about philanthropy and transformational giving . . . They have to rely on a man such as their husband before they can give money . . . Myths like these have been around for years. But recent studies are dispelling these myths, showing that in almost every income bracket, women—wealthy or not—outpace men when it comes to giving, according to the Women’s Philanthropy Institute in Indianapolis. Research also shows that many women, especially single women of all ages, develop a different kind of connection with the charities they support. On the whole, women give largely because they want to help others, many becoming more actively and personally involved on boards and committees. What we do know at Sholom is that women at large have the power to make a transformational gift, no matter the size, that will leave a lasting legacy at Sholom. Consider this: • Women are living longer • Women are making more money, and • Women may be inheriting twice—once from their parents and again if they outlive their spouse. If you fit any one of these categories above, or even if you don’t, a designated gift to Sholom Foundation from your estate will continue to make a difference for years to come. Every estate gift helps to ensure that this vital community resource can continue to provide services, facilities and life-enriching activities of daily living for our seniors in an environment based on Jewish values and practices. Hooray for the women who give to Sholom! And, hooray for the men who give to Sholom! Call Joel Mandel at 952-939-1593 to learn just how easy it is to create your own legacy.
Creating a Lasting Legacy from Gratitude
M
argie and Marvin Scherzer had an affinity for Sholom going back to the old Sholom Home East on Midway Parkway in St. Paul. In fact, shortly before Marvin passed away in 2010, he was cared for at the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East on the Shaller Family Campus, for which Margie was very grateful. Marvin had left a bequest for Sholom that established the Marvin & Margie Scherzer Family endowment fund at Sholom Foundation which will provide support for Sholom East for years to come.
Since that time, Margie would call each December to ask what the Sholom residents needed and she would make sure they got it: anything from a treadmill for physical therapy to blanket warmers for the residents. Margie, herself, had spent time recuperating in shortterm rehabilitation at the Chapman Sholom Home East and always, when she sent her donation, she would express her gratitude for Sholom. This past December, Margie’s donation purchased 44 flat screen TVs for the Chapman Sholom Home East along with an electric piano and a portable vital signs machine. Margie & Marvin Scherzer
Sadly, Margie passed away in February, but she and Marvin had created their own legacy at Sholom, one that will continue to touch lives of those served by Sholom long into the future. And for that we express our gratitude to this kind and generous family.

Sholom Donations Why Sholom Matters. . . Dear Sholom Hospice Group, Many thanks for your kind words to and about Irv. Thank you for your help and caring for him. Our family is grateful to you for all you did to help during a very difficult time. We could not have asked for more. —Charlotte Nudell & family ...................................... Dear Staff at Sholom Home East, Enclosed is a year-end gift. Could you use it for a little “day brightener” for some resident who could really use help? I want to thank you for all the wonderful care that you gave to my husband, Elliot, back from 1999 through 2007 when he was a resident at your great old facility over at Snelling & Midway Parkway. I remember Rabbi Shalom Reznik Bell and others whose names I can’t remember. A big Todah Rabah [thank you very much] to you all again! Elliot was one of the poor, but you all made his last days rich. Thankfully, Jane K.

Why Sholom Matters. . . To all the caring staff at Roitenberg Adult Day Center [at the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus], Thank you for taking such wonderful care of my wife/our mom. She really loved her time there and you gave us great peace of mind. (She was part of the Roitenberg Adult Day program for three years and recently transitioned to the Phillips Memory Care at Bentson Assisted Living Residence). —From a grateful husband & family The Sholom staff should know how wonderful the care of my mother has been while in short-term rehabilitation at Sholom. The family is so thrilled our mom can now stay in long-term care. —A phone call from a happy and relieved family Dear Staff of Sholom, Just a note to thank you for the fabulous meal for the Valentine’s dinner on Wednesday night. It was a wonderful event and my mom was thrilled and is still talking about it. The music, food and decorations added up to a great and caring evening for all. Thank you so very much for all your efforts, kindness and care. We appreciate this meal and all that Sholom is doing for our mom and everyone there. —A happy & grateful family

Gifts & Naming Opportunities For endowment gifts and pledges of $10,000 and more, a designated fund, in your name or the name of a loved one, may be established. All funds are acknowledged with plaques on the Walls of Honor at Sholom Home West and the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus. For larger gifts, in addition to establishing a fund, you may wish to dedicate or name specific areas, rooms, equipment, furnishings and programs of the Sholom Community Alliance. For more information call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593.
Sholom Auxiliary Endowment Funds The Sholom Auxiliary provides countless volunteer hours and crucial financial resources for the comfort of Sholom residents. What if you could ensure that your annual support of the Sholom Auxiliary would continue when you are no longer here to write that check? You can! Consider establishing your own named Auxiliary endowment fund or donate to any of the existing Auxiliary endowment funds listed here. 4% of every Auxiliary endowment fund is used annually for the benefit of Sholom clients. All gifts and beneficiary designations should be made payable to: Sholom Foundation, for the benefit of the Sholom Auxiliary. To find out more about creating your own Sholom Auxiliary Endowment, contact Barbara Brooks at 952.939.1594.
