S
holom, where Care Comes First, means so much to so many. During a recent conversation with Knollwood Place Apartments tenant, Dalia Kaufman Katz and her daughter, Sonia Ungerman, they expressed gratitude for Sholom—a longvalued and life-changing resource for the Katz family. Dalia was adamant that she would Dalia Kaufman Katz and her daughter, Sonia Ungerman continue to live on her own. She is a strong, independent, and intelligent person who knows what is best. However, last summer, it was evident that a change was necessary. In typical “Dalia” style, she announced that Knollwood Place Apartments was the only place for her! Sholom’s broad continuum of care and many housing options and services were important to Dalia and her family; moving to Knollwood was the logical and best choice. This move continued a long relationship between Sholom and the Katz family. Today Dalia is thriving and loving life in her new home and her family continued on page 5
Knollwood Place Apartments— a community within a community
O
n a late winter afternoon, Sholom Foundation staff met with tenants of the Knollwood Place Apartments who had gathered for a committee meeting of the Tenant Council. We were curious to find out what these individuals felt about their lives at Knollwood and what makes living here so special. We asked the open-ended question and the cacophony of responses was amazing.

We heard many common refrains and statements: . . . I came from California to live near my daughter, but the first place I lived just never felt right. I walked in here at Knollwood and I knew I was home. continued on page 6

From Mark Freeman, President of the Sholom Foundation As President, I work closely with the Sholom Foundation staff, and this Spring, we have some changes. Jeffrey Sherman joined the Foundation team as Director of Philanthropy upon the retirement of Barbara Brooks, who provided more than 14 years of tireless and steadfast dedication to the Foundation and to the Sholom family. On behalf of the Board and all of those who love and admire Barbara, I extend my sincere congratulations and a heartfelt thank you to Barbara for her years of service and her many accomplishments at the Sholom Foundation. Her dedication has profoundly transformed the lives of countless individuals and families in the Sholom community, and for this lasting impact, we expresses immense gratitude. Jeff has extensive experience in nonprofit management, senior services, housing and fund development. In past years, Jeff worked in the Sholom Marketing Department and so he may be familiar to many. Before moving to the Twin Cities, he held leadership positions at the Jewish Home for the Aging in Los Angeles and Episcopal Community Services in San Francisco. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Jeffrey Sherman Education from Ohio State University, and a Master of Arts degree in Behavioral Sciences – Gerontology from the California State University. We are glad to have Jeff at the Foundation. I am also extending my thanks to each of you for your ongoing support of the Sholom Foundation. Every gift you make fulfills the Fifth Commandment in honoring those who cared for us. We appreciate your continued generosity. Enjoy the warmer weather! Mark Freeman, President, Sholom Foundation
Lessons learned at Sholom . . .
A
lmost fourteen years working at Sholom Foundation has given me an education I could never have imagined. My years working on behalf of all those served by Sholom have been an incredible experience that I will always treasure. How fortunate for me to have enjoyed this most meaningful and absolutely best career experience in well over four decades. Here are just a few of the profound lessons I have learned:
Barbara Brooks
1. We are never too old to learn I learned much from a retired teacher, Evelyn “Evie” Shore,z”l who moved into Knollwood Place shortly after I came on board and she took the place by storm. Evie, an indomitable spirit who, armed with scholarly research and a well-thought out plan, asked me to accompany her to a meeting with the “powers that be” at Sholom. She was in search of a small budget to begin an Academy at Sholom. Evie knew that the human brain continues to grow brain cells if it is stimulated

continued on next page
Lessons learned continued from page 2 by new information. What a concept! Under her leadership, many new, interesting and impactful experiences took hold at Sholom and since then, while the names and characters, and even the programs have changed, life for those living on the Sholom Campuses has been greatly enriched. 2. “Community” matters Did you know that the average age at our Sholom facilities is pushing 90? In fact, we have many folks over the age of 100! My second lesson: Isolation is our enemy at any age, but particularly as we enter our older years. A sense of community is a surefire way to find reasons to wake up every morning just to see what the day has to offer. Participating in conversations, music programs, or lively current events discussions is good for our brain. Dancing and exercise — at whatever level we are capable of is good for muscle strength and balance. And even smiling and laughing with others is good for both body and soul. Engaging in the community around us enhances our lives every day. 3. The incredible power of one’s attitude This lesson was from the wonderful individuals I met at Sholom and so enjoyed over the years. I am in awe of folks who have been around for decades or even more than a century. No matter their limitations at this time of their lives, they engage in life — enjoying a story or sharing their experiences with youngsters. Sholom’s intergenerational programs on both campuses are the highlights of both young and old alike. Time and again, I have seen how a “glass is half-full” attitude engenders the possibility of joyful experiences every day. Somewhere I read: One’s ALTITUDE is determined by one’s ATTITUDE. So very true. Some of my very best moments at Sholom have been to see individuals new to any one of the Sholom facilities, at the moment they get past their fear, their sadness or anger at leaving one home for another, only to discover that one doesn’t come to Sholom to die. Rather, one comes to live and participate in a new phase of one’s life.
4. Sholom is a vital & necessary part of our community For well over 100 years of service, Sholom remains a vital community resource thanks to the generosity and fortitude of a community that values and honors our elders. A far cry from the original concept of a “rest home for the aged,” Sholom keeps growing and evolving. Even the Sholom I knew 14 years ago has changed, evolving as the needs of our elders change, providing relevant and important services for a population of folks that are coming to us, not in their 60s and 70s but more likely in their 80s and 90s. What extraordinary people in our greater community who have supported and continue to support Sholom with the gifts of time, talents and treasure. The volunteers and lay leaders of Sholom, Sholom Foundation and Sholom Auxiliary are among the finest people I have ever met, as is the caring and committed Sholom staff. Are there more lessons to be learned at Sholom? You bet! I plan to further my “education” at Sholom as a volunteer. AND, I highly encourage those of you who have so generously taken the time to read my departing “opus,” to volunteer YOUR time, talents and treasure to Sholom to whatever extent you are able. I guarantee that the payoff is worth it. You will touch many, many lives, and yours will be touched in return. After all, we are never too old to learn! Barbara Brooks

At Sholom...Care Comes First I cannot tell you what a comfort it is to know what good care Mom has had for over almost a year at Sholom. And more specifically, I am especially grateful to you for your attention to Mom. Your advice has been invaluable, but so has your evident concern for Mom. Please inform all the Sholom staff of my appreciation for their care and their professionalism. You have a remarkable place there.—Resident’s son Our Leadership asked me to pass on their thanks for the excellent care that Sister Marjorie received. Sister Mary Ellen Coomb asked that this appreciation be shared throughout the Shaller Family Sholom’s East campus as Sister Marjorie was on each floor of Chapman for a time and a tenant at Bentson for a time. Clearly each area took great care of her. Thank you! — A Sister of Sion

I am extremely grateful to the entire team for the wonderful, comprehensive care my grandmother received from all staff—nursing, massage, volunteers, Rabbi etc. We were “blown away” by the care my grandma and our family received. I wouldn’t live anyplace else continued from page 1 could not be happier. Dalia’s daughter Sonia, said, “We wanted Mom to move so she would not be so isolated. We are tremendously excited that she is doing so well at Knollwood. She has re-established old friendships, formed new ones, and is an active member of the community. Mom being alone is no longer a fear of ours.” Fleeing Castro’s Cuba in 1960, and sponsored by first cousins, Fern and Bernie Badzin, Dalia and her husband, Dr. Beni Katz made their new home in Minneapolis.
Over the ensuing years, Dalia has maintained her relationship with Sholom and placed utmost confidence in its care and services. Dalia lights up when she describes her longstanding friendship with a woman she met at Sholom while Beni was a resident. And now, Dalia and her longtime friend see each other daily as both are residents at Knollwood. A few years ago, Dalia came to Sholom’s Transitional Care Unit for rehabilitation post knee surgery, refusing to consider any other rehab unit in town! In summer, 2017, Dalia suffered an accident and fall, followed by a long convalescence. When she was ready to return home, Dalia said, “I’m going to Knollwood, without question! I will have the community I need. This place is something else, and it is the place for me!” Approaching her first anniversary at Knollwood, Dalia enthuses, “I love it here and I wish I’d moved sooner.” 1964
Beni embarked on a successful obstetrics and gynecology practice associated with Mt. Sinai Hospital. Dalia too worked at Mt. Sinai. Dalia soon assumed the full-time loving task of managing the Katz household and raising three beautiful daughters Sonia, Amy, and Dina, eventually welcoming their spouses Ron Ungerman, Mark Rotenberg, and Matt Cohen and the Katz in Dr. Beni and Dalia generations to follow. By 2006, Dalia and her daughters made the difficult decision that Beni should move to Sholom. As hard as they tried at home, the demands of Beni’s condition were better addressed by the professional team at Sholom. Even though many years have passed, Dalia continues to express her great appreciation and respect for the Sholom staff and the loving care shown to Beni and fellow residents. “Whether cooperative and lucid, or difficult to understand, each and every resident was treated the way we would want to be,” she commented. The Katz family was grateful for each day of the five years Beni lived at Sholom.

Knollwood community raises funds to enhance the High Holidays experience
T
here is strength in numbers, and the folks at Knollwood Place Apartments exemplify that axiom.
Spearheading a fundraising effort for the purchase of a white Torah cover for the High Holidays, Maurine Ziv and Shirley Rothstein asked the Knollwood community to raise contributions from tenants and families for the purchase. Not only did the community raise enough for the Torah cover, but a new podium for religious services and other programs as well. Maurine and Shirley tell us, “We are a family here, and are thrilled with everyone’s commitment and efforts. In fact, with the excess contributions, a dedicated fund for special projects at Knollwood Place has been established and we encourage all to ‘feed’ this fund any time, for any reason!”

Rabbi Reznik-Bell said, “We are grateful to the Knollwood Havurah for fulfilling this wonderful Mitzvah within our community.”

The feeling of Knollwood Place reminds us of a comfortable old neighborhood with friendly folks, backyard barbeques, and softball games “down the street.” At any given time, folks can be seen chatting in the lobby or over a bowl of soup in the Nosh Nook at lunchtime. Intellectually stimulating programs, lectures and events are available for all tastes and interests. Multiple seatings for Shabbat dinner accommodate several generations, allowing tenants to continue to host their families as they did in their family homes. Knollwood Place Apartments is much more that an apartment building—it truly is a community. This program is funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater St. Paul and the Minneapolis Jewish Federation in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s LIFE & LEGACY™ initiative. It enables donors to fulfill their philanthropic goals while strengthening the Twin Cities Jewish community, now and in the future. Legacies left by members of our community help sustain vital programs, services, and institutions that assist the vulnerable and advance Jewish life locally, in Israel, and around the world. In the year since its inception, almost 500 families and individuals have completed Letters of Intent that will provide for one or more recipient institutions of the Twin Cities Jewish community representing millions of dollars in future gifts. Sholom is very grateful to be among the many intended recipient organizations to benefit from this innovative and collaborative program.

Sholom Auxiliary Endowment Funds The Sholom Auxiliary provides countless volunteer hours and crucial financial resources for the comfort of Sholom residents. What if you could ensure that your annual support of the Sholom Auxiliary would continue when you are no longer here to write that check? You can! Consider establishing your own named Auxiliary endowment fund or donate to any of the existing Auxiliary endowment funds listed here. 4% of every Auxiliary endowment fund is used annually for the benefit of Sholom clients. All gifts and beneficiary designations should be made payable to: Sholom Foundation, for the benefit of the Sholom Auxiliary. To find out more about creating your own Sholom Auxiliary Endowment, contact Barbara Brooks at 952.939.1594.
