Sholom Announces New CEO!
S
holom is pleased to announce, by unanimous vote of the Sholom Board of Directors, the selection of Barbara Klick as the new Chief Executive Officer of Sholom.
A highly motivated healthcare professional, Ms. Klick has served for the last nine years as the Chief Operating Officer for Fairview Physicians Associates managing a network of over 2500 physicians. “Barbara has an extensive background in executive management in health care environments. Additionally, her time as a registered nurse and managing trauma and ambulatory centers have given her a deep understanding of clinical care delivery pathways. This was an added bonus, we didn’t expect to find,” says Chuck Selcer, Sholom Board President. continued on page 2

She brings a wealth of experiences having worked in the non-profit, for profit, and government health care arenas. Sholom’s Board of Directors believes Barbara’s experiences and capabilities will allow her to lead Sholom in successfully carrying out the organization’s mission into the future. Barbara holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas, as well as maintaining her licensure as a registered nurse. “It is an honor to join Sholom’s team to continue their legacy of service to the community. I am very passionate about seniors and see many opportunities. I am all in!” said Ms. Klick. Barbara will begin her new role at Sholom on July 1, 2016.
Recipe for Making Every Life a Story continued from page 1 • How can we gauge the excitement expressed on the faces of Menorah Plaza tenants as a University of Minnesota Raptor Center guide takes a bald eagle out of his travel cage to spread its wings to a 6-foot span? All of these engaging and highly interactive programs that tap into one’s brain to find words, music, unused abilities, and memories are now part of the robust therapeutic recreation program at Sholom, with more to come. This significant increase in the scope and depth of Sholom’s therapeutic recreational programming is due to a very generous Eagle spreads its wings. multi-year gift from the Firefly Scientist’s Foundation, and for which Sholom residents and staff are incredibly grateful.
Why did the Firefly Scientist’s Foundation choose to support Sholom? When we asked Melanie Broida, Director of the Firefly Scientist’s Foundation why Sholom, she had much to tell us: Why Sholom? I don’t know. Maybe because it’s Jewish. Maybe because I love hanging around the Sholom neighborhood. Maybe because Sholom volunteer, Renee, graciously invited me to help with her weekly sing-a-long at the Shaller Family Campus. And then the residents were so endearing that I kept coming back ...I love connecting with the Sholom elders and listening to their stories of a very rich and past era full of adventures, both home and abroad. If I love to be among these folks and hold many as role models, then, undoubtedly there must be other people of all ages who would love to be among them as well. continued on page 3
2 www.sholomfoundation.com
Recipe for Making Every Life a Story continued from page 2 It is clear to Broida that even though the folks with whom she has interacted may not hear or see or move as well as they used to, or their memory is not as sharp as it once was, they are definitely interested in participating at whatever level that is comfortable for them. The folks welcome and desire the activity, interaction and sense of accomplishment. With this in mind, Broida was determined A Bentson Memory Care resident to use the paints her sculpture in Northern Clay resources of the program Firefly Scientist’s Foundation to expand the opportunities for learning and enjoyment for all those served by Sholom:
The Sholom staff is very grateful and excited about the Firefly Scientist’s Foundation grant made in honor of Evie Shore. It is Sholom’s goal with this grant to ensure that the current therapeutic recreation program will now include more Sholom facilities and off-site locations, on more days of the week, for more hours in the day, and with more opportunities to interact with people of all ages.
If I can provide these wonderful and wise elderly folks at Sholom with reasons for getting up in the morning... If I can provide these folks with engaging activities in which they can participate at whatever level they are able...If I can help them enjoy enriching and interactive programs shared with family, friends, and neighbors of all ages, then those simple acts of doing and creating will not only help them enjoy life longer by stimulating their brains and senses, but also will give the younger folks insight and understanding into the lives of these elders.
Dorothy Aminzade show us her clay sculpture in the Northern Clay program
A tribute to a very wise and impactful educator Broida also spoke about how very fortunate she was to have known Sholom volunteer, Evelyn B. Shore of blessed memory. Evie, who lived at Knollwood Place for several years, devoted herself to creating and running a comprehensive program of The ACADEMY learning and active participation founder, Evie Shore for those residing in Sholom facilities. The ACADEMY at Sholom, as it was known, was based on Evie’s certainty that it is never too late to learn something new and that the brain can continue to learn at any age.
Prompted by her own volunteer experience, Broida encourages family and friends, as well as anyone wanting to connect with incredible people, to become a Sholom volunteer and help make Sholom programming the standard of therapeutic recreation for our elderly, providing them with the fullness of life they deserve until the end of their days.

Catalysts of Customer Service According to the National Institute on Aging, the U.S. population aged 65 and over will double in size within the next 25 years. By 2030, almost one in five Americans—about 72 million people—will be over age 65. As the silver tsunami of boomers continues to grow, so do their expectations. No longer will people settle for the average—for simple, ordinary services. They are looking for experiences. Extraordinary experiences—the kinds of which previous generations did not desire or require. Sholom not only recognizes there is a need for physical plant updates and upgrades, but also, there is a tremendous need for revitalization in how Sholom delivers care services. While Sholom explores important physical plant renovations and additions to each campus, tangentially we are also exploring new methods of customer service delivery. A cross-section of Sholom employees was assembled in November 2015. These individuals of various disciplines and strengths have begun studying new ideas and models. This team, named the Catalysts, has the goal to take the “best of the best” from their research to develop Sholom’s own unique customer service standards of the future.
From now to the year 2030, Minnesota will be aging like never before. The baby boomers—1.5 million strong in Minnesota—will lead the way.
There are plenty of new technologies, clever concepts and even trends that could help Sholom offer better service to consumers. But, the fundamentals of great service remain the same. It’s about the feeling of being recognized, listened to, valued and cared for. Essentially, when it comes to customer service, it’s not about what consumers think. Great service is about feelings. Ultimately, trends are only a means to an end. We hope to be able to begin delighting, surprising, and serving consumers in new ways in which they want to be served. Join us in encouraging the Catalysts in their important work.

Why Sholom Matters . . . Maurine Ziv knows why
I
n 2013, Maurine Ziv and her husband, Bob, moved from Sacramento to the Twin Cities and Knollwood Place to be near their family. What she found was an additional family she didn’t expect to have. This past February, following a bad fall requiring hospitalization and surgery on her hip and femur, Maurine found herself recovering at Sholom Home West. For eight weeks, Maurine received a full regimen of physical and occupational therapy until she was ready to go home and be on her own. “I didn’t think I would ever walk again! My femur was broken in four pieces and it was so difficult to move at all. But the staff at Sholom made it happen. They were so kind and patient during those first days, and even though they commiserated with me as I cried and told them my fears and concerns, they also made sure that I was working on my recovery every time I saw them.”
Maurine tells us the staff at Sholom – both the therapists and caregivers on the floor – was like having a new family. “Everyone knew who I was and on every shift, there was always someone to help me with whatever I needed, even in the middle of the night.” The eight weeks at Sholom West are behind Maurine now and she is getting to know yet another family of friends at Knollwood Place. Husband Bob’s health is such that he now resides at Sholom West, but Maurine visits him frequently. In fact, coming to and from her visits, Maurine often runs into the very staff who took such good care of her, just like she was part of the family.
IN MEMORIUM
Sheldon C. Masnek
September 5, 1927–May 20, 2016 Sheldon Masnek spent the last eight years of his life at Knollwood Place with his beloved wife, Sally, dedicating himself to his family and the Sholom community. A devoted volunteer, Sheldon led weekly Shabbat and holiday services at Knollwood Place, Roitenberg Assisted Living and Sholom Home West, assisting Rabbi Reznick Bell Sheldon Masnek in every way he could. He was instrumental in raising funds to restore the Knollwood Torah and made sure that the Torah was safely taken to Chicago and returned in good repair. Sheldon welcomed newcomers with a smile and encouraged all to get involved, always going out of his way on behalf of others. Sheldon was a loving, kindhearted, warm and caring man who touched countless lives in the Sholom community. A true mensche, Sheldon will be dearly missed. May his name be for a blessing.

Knollwood Place, a site for the prestigious Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
T
he Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), an affiliated program of the University of Minnesota College of Continuing Education, is a vital community of older adults who are brought together by their intellectual curiosity and love of learning. OLLI offers a wide range of volunteer-led courses and activities. “A health club for the mind” is the OLLI motto, and the organization’s enthusiastic members make full use of their club’s many programs. There are no tests and no grades—just the excitement of learning and discussing something new. Knollwood Place was officially made a teaching site for OLLI in 2014 and ever since, an OLLI class has been offered each semester – Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. “We are delighted to provide a home for this prestigious organization and particularly pleased that these courses are made available to 10–15 current Knollwood Place tenants at no charge,” says Knollwood Place Leasing Coordinator, BettyAnn Baustert, “and the feedback about the OLLI program from visitors to our campus and our participating tenants has been fantastic.” Knollwood Place tenant, Stephen Spielberg, says: “This is a wonderful opportunity on our doorstep. The subjects vary each semester so we are treated to a diverse collection of knowledge.” Just this past Spring, our own Dr. Jason Fenton was the course leader on the subject of “The Five Books of Moses (The Torah): A Critical Appreciation. Dr. Fenton is a former lecturer in Jewish Studies at UCI and Cal State Fullerton, and current KPA tenant. “When I moved to Minnesota three years ago, one of the many things that impressed me about my new community is the widespread interest and dedication to continuing education that is exemplified by the OLLI program. The classes are not only interesting and intellectually stimulating for the students, it keeps those of us who are teaching the classes sharp too. I appreciated the short commute from my apartment on the second floor to the “classroom” where I taught my class at Knollwood.” As Baustert tells us, “We have always known that you are never too old to learn, and the OLLI program at Knollwood Place just proves that point!”

A SIMPLE BEQUEST A simple statement in your Will or Living Trust is all it takes to leave your legacy. Gifts by bequest may be made in cash, securities, IRA and other retirement accounts, real estate or tangible personal property and may be fully deductible in determining your estate taxes. Do you have a Will? When was the last time it was updated? Good for you. You have a Will. Only a very small percentage of folks actually have a Will or have any kind of estate plan in place.
as Sholom Foundation, it is important to leave your legacy – not just your possessions and financial assets, but your values as well.
But, here’s the catch. When was the last time you updated your Will?
The values that you hold dear may remain the same for your entire life, or change due to experience and maturity. Your assets most likely will change during your lifetime. And, as the circumstances of your loved ones evolve, their needs are likely to change too.
• When your children were born? Do you mean those children who are now adults with children of their own? • When you bought your first “starter home?” Do you mean before you bought your third or fourth home and your condo in Florida? • When your father passed away peacefully under the care of Sholom Hospice? Was that when your mother moved to Knollwood Place and found a built-in community of friends with whom she could enjoy her days and alleviate her loneliness? No matter the size of your estate that you want to pass on to your loved ones and favorite charities such
It’s only too late to create or update your Will and your intentions after you are gone. Take some time to think about what you want your legacy to be. Take a look at the Leave a Legacy insert in this issue. There are many ways to make your legacy count – some simple and others more complex. Talk this over with your advisor. And, if Sholom is in your plans, no matter the amount, please let us know. We want to honor you with membership in the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society for sharing your values with those served by Sholom.
Want to know more about bequests and other ways to make a lasting impact? Call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593. Or visit www.sholomfoundation.com and click on Gift Options/How to Give. Be sure to check out our “Gifting for your family and the world around them” insert in this Circle of Life issue.
Leave your Legacy. Influence the Future. We invite you to join the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society, honoring those who provide for our elderly loved ones with a commitment to the Sholom Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in Minnesota, through their wills and other charitable gift plans. There is no finer example of the power of giving than what we can achieve together. Sholom Auxiliary Endowment Funds The Sholom Auxiliary provides countless volunteer hours and crucial financial resources for the comfort of Sholom residents. What if you could ensure that your annual support of the Sholom Auxiliary would continue when you are no longer here to write that check? You can! Consider establishing your own named Auxiliary endowment fund or donate to any of the existing Auxiliary endowment funds listed here. 4% of every Auxiliary endowment fund is used annually for the benefit of Sholom clients. All gifts and beneficiary designations should be made payable to: Sholom Foundation, for the benefit of the Sholom Auxiliary. To find out more about creating your own Sholom Auxiliary Endowment, contact Barbara Brooks at 952.939.1594.
