A Sholom Success Story

W

hen Jules Levin was a member of the development team for the new Sholom campus in Minneapolis in the early 1980s, as well as one of its Capital Campaign Chairs, he wasn’t thinking he would someday benefit from Sholom’s expert rehabilitation services. Today Jules raves about the excellent care Jules and Rose Levin offered through Sholom’s Rehabilitation Department. Jules came to Sholom Home West’s Transitional Care Unit following each of two hip surgeries over the past few years. After each stay at Sholom, Jules continued his physical therapy as an out-patient to make further gains in his strength and endurance. A familiar sight was Jules striding down the corridor, testing his mettle and new hips. Now, at 95 years young, Jules is one of Sholom’s many success stories. Jules, in partnership for 68 years with his beautiful wife, Rose, have been residents of continued on page 5

everal months ago as Sholom began to develop a photo exhibit, the theme became obvious: honoring twelve of Sholom’s centenarians, individuals 100 years of age and older. According to the Pew Research Center, in 1990 there were 2.9 centenarians for every 10,000 adults ages 65 and older around the world. That share grew to 7.4 by 2015 and is projected to rise to 23.6 by 2050. At Sholom, too, the number of residents celebrating their 100th birthday continues to grow.

How to Get Started on Making a Will by Chris Farrell

A

nother celebrity has died without a will. Sad to say, celebrities like Aretha Franklin who die without an estate plan have plenty of company among the less famous. Merrill Lynch and the consulting firm Age Wave found that about half of those they surveyed 50 and older didn’t have a will. “Very few people talk with close family members about important financial topics, such as level of financial security, plans for living arrangements in retirement, inheritance or long-term care,” noted the Merrill Lynch/Age Wave report, “Family & Retirement: The Elephant in the Room.” Of course, you know you should have a will. Then why do so many people procrastinate on getting a will? My guess is the press of time. We believe many things are necessary for our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing — including estate planning. But living the good life has become very demanding. Time is the scarce commodity. We’ll get to that will eventually, right? So, here’s my suggestion for getting started. Record or write over the next weeks and months an ethical will, also known as a values statement or letter to our younger selves. Whatever you call it, the basic idea is to capture for your family and future family members — grandchildren and great grandchildren — what you want them to know about your values, what mattered to you in life, what traditions you hold dear and how you would like the world to become a better place. The process of recording an ethical will starts a conversation with family. Once

2 www.sholomfoundation.com

you begin capturing your values and discussing them with your family, it isn’t much of a leap to open discussions about your estate plan. “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward,” the late tech pioneer Steve Jobs said in his Stanford University commencement address. “So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. An advantage of starting the conversation with an ethical will is that there’s less pressure on everyone and more time to get comfortable with the topic. The discussions will lead you to finally meet with a lawyer or go online to write your will. Good estate planning isn’t only about a will. You will want to arrange your finances so that you can age comfortably, establish durable power of attorney in case cognitive decline sets in and write an advanced health directive. These details naturally emerge from initial discussions about values, rather than the other way around. To request a confidential Will Kit, please call 952.939.1593. At Sholom...Care Comes First

Family of Jerry Alch is so appreciative of the care Jerry “ The received while at Sholom. From the very first conversation we had with Sholom, throughout his stay, we were impressed and pleased. He received excellent, sweet, compassionate care from the nurses, aides, social workers – and from all with whom Jerry and we interacted. Everyone listened, responded and were helpful; and Jerry was comfortable and felt safe. Thank you so very much. —Janice Alch, David Alch, Sharron Steinfeldt and family.

family wants to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the “ Our wonderful, caring and professional care you have given “C” over the summer months. Your care for her has been nothing short of a miracle for our family! We were at a point where we just couldn’t provide what she needed. In this difficult time for us, it was an unbelievable gift to have found you, and you have given her a whole new outlook on life and she is content and happy at night when I pick her up. Of course, this time has given me a new source of free time to keep up with my work both at home and in my consulting business; I now can keep going. I was on the verge of having to give it up. We are flying out to Arizona for the winter. I really hate to leave and take her out of your program, but I know the warm weather and being able to walk outside every day will be the best for her. Thanks to the help you have given and how well it worked, I have decided for her to be in an Adult Day Center in Sun City whose program seems to be similar to Sholom. So, many, many thanks to all of you. You really made a difference for our family. We plan to be back at Sholom in early May. —The “L” Family

owe you a very large thank you. You were able to recognize my sister’s “ We needs before the family was ready to acknowledge them. My sister is very happy you were able to assist her move into Menorah Plaza. When she went to the hospital in August, it was a blessing she had moved out of her old apartment and into her new home. The whole family is relieved to have her receive such wonderful care and help. Everyone agrees this is a perfect place for her. Thank you! —J’s family and friends.

Jules & Rose Levin continued from page 1 St. Louis Park for more than 50 years. They met when they were younger in St. Paul, but dating didn’t begin until they were reacquainted on the University of Minnesota campus a few years later. They moved into St. Louis Park after first living in St. Paul, joining the migration to the suburbs in the 1950s. Jules and Rose raised two daughters and the family now includes 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren! The Levin’s have been strong supporters of Sholom for many years. In addition to their ongoing generosity, the Levin’s established the Rose & Jules Levin Family Fund, an endowment fund designed to support Sholom long into the future. The Levin’s also number among the over 200 members of the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society, honoring those who have included the Sholom Foundation in their estate plans. Still active in the Twin Cities Jewish Community, Jules is a past president of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation, and B’nai Brith. Rose held leadership roles in Adath’s Women’s League and Hadassah. When asked about the background for her community involvement, Rose quipped, “My dad’s mom collected donations for Sholom even before the building on Midway Parkway

was a reality. Sholom has been important to us for a very long time.” Sholom’s Rehabilitation Team is proud of Jules’ success and sends kudos to Rose for her ardent cheerleading. Michelle Harris, Rehabilitation Manager at Sholom Home West says, “The benefit of Sholom’s Rehab Department is our highly skilled and well regarded therapy team, along with the continuum of care we provide. From in-patient care on the campuses, to Sholom’s Home Health Care in the community, to out-patient therapy at one of Sholom’s campus Rehabilitation centers, the full range of therapy services can be provided throughout the healing process.” The generosity Rose and Jules continue to demonstrate for Sholom enables the organization to grow and provide these life-changing services. Jules Levin is but one example of individuals who are active and vital today, thanks to hard work coupled with the expert and professional Sholom rehabilitation team. Your generous support for Sholom supports these vital programs and helps to create success stories like Jules. A Message from Jerry Rudick, President of Sholom

I

am pleased to bring greetings from Sholom and to update you on the Care Comes First Capital Campaign.

The current Care Comes First Capital Campaign is succeeding on several levels. First, thanks to the wonderful volunteers, donors and Sholom Foundation staff, the campaign has raised over $11 million! We still have a significant amount to raise before reaching the $44 million goal, but the effort and results thus far have been amazing. The funds raised have allowed several projects to be completed at the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus, and on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. We have successfully completed the elevator project at Knollwood Place Apartments, the parking lot resurfacing, and life safety system upgrades on the West Campus. Our Sholom staff and residents are thrilled with these improvements, especially with many changes and upgrades on the Transitional Care and Long Term Care Units on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Sholom Home West. Special thanks goes out to those serving on the capital campaign cabinet: Kerry & Scott Bader, Amy & Stan Baratz, Etta & Mike Barry, Jay Goldberg, Cindy & Harold Goldfine, Steven Gottlieb, Jennifer Gray &

Mark Freeman, Susan Feinberg Hughes, Phil Jaffe, Stefanie & Robert Karon, Barbara Klick, Joel Mandel, Harold Roitenberg, Polly & Mike Saxon, Cindy & Joel Shapiro. And, thank you to Sonia Ungerman for chairing the amazing team for the Special Gifts Division. The capital campaign achievements are only one area that deserves recognition. The entire Sholom Alliance Board and I offer our heartfelt thanks to Barbara Klick, our CEO, and the team she has assembled. Their amazing performance at raising Sholom’s standards and implementation of internal metrics to monitor performance gives me confidence that Sholom will continue to fulfill our mission and meet our operational and financial goals long into the future. The Sholom Alliance Board is looking forward to instituting a long-term strategic plan within the year, increasing our employee retention and continuing to improve our financial position. I am confident that goals in the Care Comes First Capital Campaign will be achieved because of support from you, the Jewish Community. We are all proud of the work the Staff and Board continue to do. And, we are especially grateful to all of you who continue to support Sholom and make this Sholom’s time to shine.

Mark Freeman, President of Sholom Foundation Remarks

I

n October, I began the second year of my presidency of the Sholom Foundation. I am so proud of the work that we are doing by raising funds to support all of the wonderful programs and services provided at Sholom. This past year was very exciting as we began to raise money for the Care Comes First Capital Campaign to address needs at Sholom. My thanks go to the countless volunteers who have spent their valuable time as well as contributing meaningful and much

8 www.sholomfoundation.com

needed financial support to the campaign. Although much of the Foundation’s time this was focused on the Care Comes First Capital Campaign, we did not lose sight of our goals to continue raising endowment funds to secure our future. The upcoming year promises to be filled with excitement and opportunities as well, continuing our work toward achieving our goals in both the Capital Campaign and in endowment fundraising. In doing so, we recognize that there are opportunities that have arisen with the enactment of the new tax reforms that continued on page 9

Mark Freeman Remarks continued from page 8 were signed into law in December 2017. The new tax law may affect the income taxes on estates and on annual gifts. It is recommended that people review their planned giving to insure that gift plans are up to date and include considerations for the effect of the new tax laws. When structuring your planned gifts, please consider a gift to the Sholom Foundation. Your help continues to provide support for Sholom, a place to serve the older adults in our community, enabling access to programs and services which promote independence and engagement in life-enriching experiences. On any given day, in any one of our Sholom residences, you will find many opportunities for our residents to enjoy, learn, and interact with

others in a safe, vibrant and caring environment based upon our timeless Jewish values. It is heartwarming for me to see the beautiful portraits of our 100+ year old Sholom residents. I am reminded of my grandmother, Ann Miller, who lived at the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East. Ann lived to be 104 years old and would often tell me how much she appreciated the care she received, and the relationships she developed while living at Sholom. I know that like many of our residents, life at Sholom helped make her last years so much more meaningful. With all good wishes for a healthy and happy 2019!

R

esidents at Knollwood Place Apartments had the tremendous opportunity to participate in a creative non-fiction writing class co-sponsored by Sholom and Rimon: The Minnesota Jewish Arts Council. This joint effort brought the skills of experienced writing instructor, Judy Brier, who facilitated this program for residents of the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. The class received rave reviews from its participants, who actually, are better known as writers. The writers gave kudos to the instructor who knew exactly how to bring out the best in their writing and taught important technical skills. Over the 20 sessions, the writers completed a weekly assignment and presented their short story, poetry, or prose to the class. These dedicated individuals were steadfast in their craft, and each worked diligently to improve his/her technique and writing style. The instructor offered a new topic each week, drawing upon the participants’ life experiences: youth and growing up, family, the concept of change, the aging process and what it is to be a senior in today’s culture. The outcome of this course far exceeded the original goal. Participants were able to hone their skills, create a record of events in their lives, share stories, and in addition, a sense of community unity was cultivated.

Residents who knew each other only by name or by sight developed a strong camaraderie. Long conversations were prompted by the writing and the content, with deep dives into people’s backgrounds, geneology, and shared experiences. This Creative Writing Project is representative of Sholom offerings fostering an environment where residents engage in meaningful experiences, enhance self-confidence, develop and further skills. Your support for these life changing opportunities is greatly appreciated.

They Come to Sholom to Thrive!

A

friend whose mother lives at Knollwood Place Apartments recently said, “I never can get a lunch date with my mom, she is too busy—lectures, exercise, bus trips— she’s having more fun than I do! Where do I sign up?” In the past, activities in senior residences and care facilities were provided primarily to keep the days from becoming too long. Sholom’s programs have entered a new generation and are the product of the talented and expert Therapeutic Recreation Department professionals. Armed with understanding that each of us seeks meaning in life, and focusing on basic human needs—physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual—this team creates opportunities for meaningful engagement and avenues to seek what is important in life. For the most part, Sholom residents are no longer working. Sholom staff understands that individuals continue to need daily activities which can help shape the day and keep minds active and alert and even add new layers to an individual’s identity. Recreation and constructive leisure activities play a strong role in a person’s physical health. Noted in a recent fascinating article in Provider, a health care industry periodical, studies have demonstrated that activities can play an essential role in the physical healing process. Researchers who study the aging process, theorize about “engagement” and “disengagement” as one advances in years. The former theory advocates for continued interaction in the world, while the latter focuses on pulling back and moving into a quieter existence. Therapeutic Recreation staff take into account both ends of the spectrum and all in between while maintaining an individualized approach,

10 www.sholomfoundation.com

knowing that one size definitely does not fit all when developing and implementing programs. The Department’s strength lies in creating many offerings and helping the individual select what resonates. The MacPhail College of Music offers several programs including an extremely successful intergenerational class combining residents with young children from nearby schools. Journeys around the world introduce food and culture from lands far away. A recent visit to Thailand featured dancers in ornate costumes. OLLI classes bring university level discussions to each campus. Musical guests provide entertainment, but often, residents take over the microphone, guitar, and piano. Off campus outings are frequent. Emphasizing mental/cognitive stimulation, programs specialize in recall, current events, and historical events. Board games and discussions are varied for cognitive levels and all call for focus and concentration. TED talks bring a wealth of information, humor, and varied points of view. Hand work such as baking, crafts, and table top gardening are favorites. And for those who prefer quiet and solitude, staff assists these individuals with one to one sessions. Exercise classes are scheduled almost daily. Live 2B Healthy® is an organization specializing in fitness for seniors and holds classes on both campuses. Balance class and yoga reach capacity. The David Feinberg Vitality & Aquatics Center offers a wide range of fitness sessions, including use of the warm water therapy pool. Exercise rooms on both campus get a work out! Meaningful engagement, individualized goals for leisure and recreation, and implementing opportunities to keep minds, bodies, and spirits active and involved, regardless of physical or other limitations are the ultimate desired goals. Your generous support allows these wonderful opportunities to take place and continue to grow.

Are you grateful to Sholom for the services you or someone you care about received at Sholom? Make a tax deductible donation in appreciation.

Sholom Foundation benefits from your support Here are some options we hope you will consider: • Gifts of appreciated assets such as securities or real estate are an excellent way to benefit the Sholom Foundation. • Making a gift to the Sholom Foundation of your old, unneeded life insurance policy can benefit the Foundation and help you by receiving a charitable income tax deduction, reduce the size of your estate, and help with your cash flow. • Tax brackets are new in 2018. You might find yourself in a lower bracket with a reduced tax bill. Have you considered making a larger contribution to the Sholom Foundation with the savings? • Consider “bundling” or “consolidating” multiple year charitable contributions in one year. • The tax deduction for charitable cash contributions has increased. This would be a good time to donate. • Naming the Sholom Foundation as a beneficiary of a Qualified Retirement Plan Account will allow your gift to benefit the Foundation by passing it on to us tax-free. • Making a Rollover Gift directly from your IRA to the Sholom Foundation may offer you many financial advantages. This information is offered for your consideration and is not tax, legal, or financial advice. We recommend that you consult with your personal financial advisor for information and results specific to your situation.

Reduce Your Tax Burden even if you don’t itemize

An IRA Charitable Rollover Gift:

Do you own an IRA or other qualified retirment plan? Are you looking for a tax-wise strategy to make gifts to support our mission? If so, consider making an IRA charitable rollover gift.

An IRA rollover has several significant tax advantages. It allows you to give from pre-tax assets. If you do not itemize or are subject to charitable deduction limits, the IRA rollover still allows you to give while receiving tax benefits. An IRA rollover gift could also help you avoid income that could push you into a higher tax bracket. Call 952.939.1593 or email info@sholomfoundation.com for a complimentary, no-obligation look at the tools and strategies we have to help you reach your goals. Gifts & Naming Opportunities For endowment gifts and pledges of $10,000 and more, a designated fund, in your name or the name of a loved one, may be established. All funds are acknowledged with plaques on the Walls of Honor at Sholom Home West and the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus. For larger gifts, in addition to establishing a fund, you may wish to dedicate or name specific areas, rooms, equipment, furnishings and programs of the Sholom Community Alliance. For more information call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593.

Sholom Auxiliary Endowment Funds The Sholom Auxiliary provides countless volunteer hours and crucial financial resources for the comfort of Sholom residents. What if you could ensure that your annual support of the Sholom Auxiliary would continue when you are no longer here to write that check? You can! Consider establishing your own named Auxiliary endowment fund or donate to any of the existing Auxiliary endowment funds listed here. 4% of every Auxiliary endowment fund is used annually for the benefit of Sholom clients. All gifts and beneficiary designations should be made payable to: Sholom Foundation, for the benefit of the Sholom Auxiliary. To find out more about creating your own Sholom Auxiliary Endowment, contact Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593. Endowment gifts of any size are welcome and may be pledged over a period of years or as a bequest. Cash gifts or pledges starting at $10,000 or estate gifts starting at $20,000 will establish a named Auxiliary Endowment Fund at Sholom Foundation and will be recognized on the Walls of Honor at both Sholom campuses.
