A Magical Relationship

J

oey Kristal and Dixie, a 9 year old Shih Tzu, have been a Pet Therapy hospice volunteer team for a year, and they love it. From the beginning, Dixie formed a bond with individuals, caregivers and families alike. Joey speaks very fondly of their first visits with an individual who preferred to be in his room. When Dixie came in, he would absolutely light up. He enjoyed watching Dixie as she sat by his feet and would stop what he was doing to visit with her. He talked about how beautiful Dixie was and often spoke with staff about his time with the dog. “Hi, Dixie” could be heard as Joey opened the door to this individual’s room and a meaningful conversation ensued. With each successive visit, their connection became stronger and more significant. Joey shared positive feelings about her experience as a hospice volunteer, “I am so happy to be able to volunteer in this way and be present with these individuals. I am sad when we lose individuals, but I know I’ve had a role in their life and Dixie helps complete that. It is an unbelievable feeling to know we’ve been a comfort to someone at the end of life. The folks we serve may have limited family members or are busy with jobs and kids or families who live out of town, which makes our roles mean that much more. Just knowing others are spending time with their loved ones relieves some of their pressure and stress.” continued on page 3

da depends upon her nurse call pendant to reach the Home Care Staff in the Bentson Family Assisted Living Residence on the Shaller Family Campus and when she engages the pendant today, she has peace of mind. Ida knows the recent WiFi upgrade assures call signals will get through to staff without interruption and staff will immediately be there to help. With thanks to Sholom’s good friends, Michelle and Steve Shaller, the WiFi system at the Rossy and Richard Shaller Family Sholom East Campus was recently upgraded. Residents, families, and staff are extremely happy with the improvements. The nurse call pendant system in the Bentson Building is a major beneficiary of the WiFi upgrade.

State-of-the-Art Equipment and Real-Life Scenarios Build Strength and Endurance

“I

s there really a machine that can help improve my balance?” “Why is a car sitting on a roof-top patio?” “Why is there a washer and dryer in a rehabilitation area?” All relevant questions for Sholom’s Rehabilitation Departments. Sholom’s Rehabilitation programs, where Care Comes First, focus on recovery from injury or illness by building strength and endurance, all achieved through expert Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapies designed for Sholom residents and community outpatients. The Rehab Centers are located on the Shaller Family Sholom East Campus in St. Paul and the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus in St. Louis Park.

Sheri and Steve Lear

The Fingerhut/Deikel Rehabilitation Center on the Shaller Campus is striking in its utilization of advanced techniques and innovation to achieve individualized results. With thanks to donors, Sheri and Steve Lear, and Affiance Financial, the purchase of the Biodex Balance System brings technological developments in fall prevention through assessment and treatment. A second innovation is The Simulated Real-Life Rehabilitation Scenario Practice Program which enables an individual to practice newly learned therapeutic skills while engaging in realistic everyday situations.

Biodex Balance System A key Quality Improvement Indicator at Sholom is Fall Reduction and Prevention. According to the National Council on Aging, falls among seniors are one of the leading causes of injuries and can have serious consequences. The Biodex Balance System revolutionizes fall prevention by combining science and technology to first assess fall risks and then treat balance issues. Demonstrated in the picture, Dick is standing on the platform of the Biodex machine. Built-in computerized sensors target an individual’s fall risk and using that data, the Biodex automatically devises a series of exercises to mitigate those risks. Dick is happy to talk about his experience, “This is amazing. Every time I use the Biodex, I feel I’m more stable and my walking is better. I don’t want to fall and this is helping me feel strong and surefooted.” This tool enables detection of subtleties in balance and other impairments which, without this technology, are difficult, at best, to diagnose. This is a benefit for the rehabilitative process with a focus on improving lower body strength, gait, and endurance. The machine’s capabilities are flexible, making it useful with a wide variety of ability levels as well as targeting specific issues.

Joey has been a social worker in Minneapolis public schools for 22 years, so she is no stranger to the helping professions. However, she had never worked with clients at the end of life. Being a hospice volunteer with Sholom Johnson Hospice is extremely satisfying, and it offers Joey a new avenue in which to apply her skills and to share Dixie’s loving personality. She eagerly anticipates her weekly visits. The Pet Therapy program has a role front and center at the Sholom Johnson Hospice Agency. At present teams only include dogs, but in the near-future will include rabbits. Together they will play an important role in helping to increase comfort and reduce stress. Often language barriers can be difficult to overcome, but pets have an uncanny ability to break through. Another individual who had a difficult time communicating formed a fast bond with the dog. She would sing and smile while holding and petting Dixie. Pet therapy can be valuable when language, dementia or illness thwarts conventional communication.

Being a hospice volunteer with Sholom Johnson Hospice is extremely satisfying, and it offers Joey a new avenue in which to apply her skills and share Dixie’s loving personality. Joey and Dixie also visit with a married couple. One spouse was not that interested in having pet therapy services, but knew how much his spouse would enjoy time with Dixie. Having Dixie visit was wonderful for her and he was happy she felt so good in the dog’s presence. Both clients were relaxed with Dixie and Joey was then able to engage with both. Pet Therapy is one of a multitude of services available through the Sholom Johnson Hospice Agency. Rhonda De Bough, hospice volunteer coordinator shared, “Volunteers are integral to the hospice program. Pets who volunteer develop a magical relationship with the patient in a way that is profound and unspoken.” The Pet Therapy Teams participate in hospice training, and pets are tested and certified. When they are ready, teams are matched with individuals who select this benefit. We salute and thank our Sholom Johnson Hospice Agency Pet Therapy volunteer teams. Their work is heartfelt, amazing, and truly magical. For more information on this and other volunteer opportunities with Sholom Johnson Hospice Agency and inquiries about the program, please contact Rhonda De Bough at 651.328.2209, or rdebough@sholom.com.

Opportunities to Support Sholom

R

yan Winkler, Minnesota House of Representatives Majority Leader recently toured the Ackerberg Family Sholom West Campus. Winkler, whose district includes part of St. Louis Park, visited with staff and residents to gain a better understanding of Sholom and learn some of the financial challenges inherent with operating a multi-faceted senior organization. Sholom excels in the senior services arena, offering two continuum of care campuses providing several levels of care, services, and programming to meet the needs of seniors – mind, body, and soul. Throughout the United States, many seniors depend upon governmental assistance to help pay for their care. At Sholom, approximately 55% of the operating costs for the care centers are paid through government programs, primarily Medicaid reimbursements, which fall short in paying for all actual costs.

Sholom and partner organizations engage in frequent conversations with elected officials to help them understand our role in the safety net for seniors and the cost for those services. In addition, Sholom continually evaluates the operations to ensure efficiencies while exceeding standards of care. Thank you for your steadfast support of Sholom. We hope you will select from the opportunities listed below to continue your support of Sholom.

A new generation of donors for Sholom

S

holom welcomes a new generation of contributors to Sholom. Some of the youngest donors to Sholom are Rina Schoenberger, age eight, and her sister Shira, age five. At Louise and Steven Schoenberger’s home, tzedakah is not just a concept, it is learned and practiced. Rina, a second grader at Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School, and Shira, a pre-K student at Beth El Aleph Preschool, are putting their lessons to good use. Last winter during Chanukah, the four Schoenberger children: Michah, Laiala, Rina, and Shira each received Chanukah gelt, but rather than using the cash for themselves, each child applied their gift toward a charitable organization of their choosing. A family round table discussion focused on types of giving, how tzedakah can make you feel, and what is important about the organization receiving support. After some thought, Rina and Shira agreed upon Sholom as the place to direct their gelt.

What motivated their tzedakah to go to Sholom? Ruthie Schoenberger, Rina and Shira’s great-grandmother is a resident at Knollwood Place Apartments. Since the time they were toddlers, dinner with Baubie Ruthie at the Irving and Ceil Schechter Dining Room in the Knollwood Place Apartments was a weekly event. Ruthie proudly showed off the kids, and made sure nobody went home hungry. Both girls talk about continuing to spend time with their Baubie, playing cards, and just “hanging out.” Through school programs, they have danced and performed on the Sholom campus many times. Birthdays are celebrated during Shabbat dinners at Knollwood Place Apartments. They are very comfortable at Sholom, and they love to visit. When it came time to make a donation, Baubie Ruthie’s home was at the top of the list.

Tzedakah is a family tradition. Just look at Nancy and Mike Schoenberger, Rina and Shira’s grandparents, who have established an endowment fund at the Sholom Foundation which generates financial support for Sholom Alliance services and facilities, and also promote an excellence of care, for generations to come. They are also members of the Sholom Foundation Heritage Society. (See page 19 for more information) A special thank you to two of Sholom’s youngest donors, and to their entire family for their support. For more information on creating and supporting a Sholom Foundation Endowment Fund, please call Joel Mandel at 952.939.1593, or jmandel@sholom.com.

Falls are a moment in time when confidence and quality of life can both deteriorate. We were focused on the idea there needs to be a way to prevent these falls; to develop a proactive way to prevent people from falling. We approached Sholom with this concern, and they responded with a wonderful solution – the Biodex Balance System. We learned that as donors, we were able to talk to staff about a need, and we worked together to develop a realistic solution.”

SIMULATED REAL-LIFE SCENARIOS Merely steps from the rehabilitation center, simulated real-life scenarios take place on the rooftop-level Tankenoff Training Center Patio. Co-located on the patio is the Saxon Automotive Group’s Training center featuring a full-sized 4-door automobile. The auto scenario provides individuals with reduced mobility and dexterity practice getting into and out of a car. This scenario, too, is a vital training tool for families and care givers to safely assist with transfers when transporting loved ones or clients. Alongside the vehicle, the sidewalk scenario encourages practice walking on city-like sidewalks and streets. One element includes a curb as well as a sloping cut-out section of pavement. On the opposite side of the patio, three walking paths replicate neighborhood surfaces: one is comprised of gravel and small loose stones, one is constructed with uneven stone pavers, and the third is designed with bumps and divots under a cover of outdoor turf.

Bob said during his daily rehab workout, “I’m getting stronger and feel better every day. I’m looking forward to getting back into my car. Also, I don’t want to miss out on my summer walks checking out the gardens and flowers in my neighborhood.” A household scenario complete with working kitchen and laundry is showcased inside the rehab center. process of brewing a cup of tea, using a washing machine or collecting meal components from the refrigerator require modifications when, for example, a walker is introduced for safe movement. Also serving as an evaluative tool, scenarios help assess the need for additional help and adaptive measures.

Simulated real-life scenarios are vital to the rehabilitative process. The Scenarios (1) encourage learning new techniques to maintain independence (2) offer practice opportunities which help individuals thrive (3) continue to manage activities of daily living in the face of physical limitations.

Dorothy came to Sholom to rebuild her strength after a fall and is eager to return home. The simulated real-life rehabilitation kitchen offers Dorothy plenty of practice navigating familiar territory, but now with new assistive devices. Dorothy stated, “I appreciate being able to move around the rehab kitchen and figure out how to make this walker work for me! I want to stay as independent as I can so if they can show me how to stay safe, I’m all for it.”

Sholom takes great pride in the Rehabilitation Department’s successes and receives excellent reviews. In 2018, 1,623 patients participated in Rehabilitation programs, for a total of 37,033 therapy sessions. For more information about Sholom’s Rehabilitation Services, please contact Andrea Horvath at ahorvath@sholom.com, or 952-939-1676.

Upgrades Bringing Peace of Mind

continued from page 1

When a pendant is activated, a signal is sent to portable telephones carried by staff members. The outcome of the system improvements is all positive with Sholom residents enjoying a better quality of life. Elizabeth, a lead home health aide talked about the value of the updated portable telephones and the WiFi, “We respond to calls much faster than before. Residents don’t have to wait as long for one of us to arrive. We can receive notifications everywhere in the building now so I don’t worry I will miss one. If I’m with a resident, I can easily call one of my co-workers to answer another call. The residents are less anxious and feel more at ease and so does our staff!” The Shaller’s commented, “This truly is about ensuring a high quality of life for those entrusted to Sholom’s care. Not only do we as a community need to guarantee professional services and programs but we also must provide for the infrastructure which enables this important work to be carried out. As a family, we are thrilled we can help support the crucially important work at Sholom, just as we did when the campus opened ten years ago.” As a result of the WiFi system upgrade, current cyber safety and security standards have also been enhanced, greatly reducing Sholom’s susceptibility to a cyber-attack. As aging equipment is replaced, cyber security increases, thereby protecting data of all kinds, including health records and financial information. Safety and security is always a priority, with data systems included. Upgrades are also evident in the Roitenberg Family Adult Day Center. Notifications are consistent in reaching the portable telephone in the Center, improving response time, advancing safety, care, and concern for each program participant.

At the Shirley Chapman Sholom Home East, the WiFi upgrade ensures that telephone calls and online communications are dependable and uninterrupted. Staff can easily contact fellow staff members reducing the wait time for assistance or information. Terry, of the Shaller Campus Dietary Department reports, “Telephone reception is so much better! We are able to clearly understand calls from resident telephones throughout the campus.” This system upgrade yields tremendous outcomes: • Improved communications and information sharing • Improved cyber security • Faster response times to residents • Improved service delivery to residents Sholom extends a thank you and sincere appreciation to Michelle and Steve Shaller. Their generosity and foresight allows Sholom to maintain the highest quality services.

At Sholom...

My father-in-law, Bob Less recently moved into the Bentson Building on the Shaller Campus. We anticipated this transition being incredibly challenging. The Bentson staff have been incredibly welcoming and have worked so well with our family’s fear and anxiety. Bob says everyone has been extremely professional, treats him with dignity and respect, and he has been really pleased with his care. He likes the food and the people he’s meeting, and Bob is a most active tenant, looking forward to his exercise class every morning, the Torah study discussion, and even joined in a baking activity! We are teary-eyed with delight watching him thrive at Bentson. He had been pretty homebound the past few years with a 24-hour caregiver, but now he’s wheeling himself to get onto the elevator and navigates to meals. Seeing him on his first Shabbat here, greeting all who he saw, with a hearty “Good Shabbos,” – all of this is way beyond what we imagined his moving here would bring.”

– Elyse Less

When our mother could no longer be in her own home, the next best place for her to be was at the Sholom Home. Although initially going for rehabilitation following a hospitalization, mom ended up staying there for the final leg of her life’s journey. At one point, I asked mom if she was ready to return to her own home. Mom responded, “not yet.” Perhaps she recognized, as did we, that she still needed the compassionate and caring attention she received from her many providers during her stay at Sholom.”

My dad lived happily at Knollwood Place Apartments for almost five years. He is now 100, and needs additional care so dad moved to Sholom Home West. He is doing well and regaining energy. In fact, he uses his walker some of the time, getting him out of his wheelchair. Moving to a new place can be difficult but the staff has been very welcoming. Deb, the head nurse is very accessible as is the social worker. One of the nice things is I can take Dad back to Knollwood Place Apartments for dinner to see his friends. I’m happy that our family’s Orthodox philosophy of life is respected, and that staff has shown me every life has worth. It is great to have dad in a Jewish environment.”

Why is it Important to Have a Place for Jewish Seniors?

A

t a recent discussion held at the Knollwood Place Apartments on the Ackerberg Family Sholom West campus, the question was posed, “Why is it important to have a residence or place for Jewish seniors?” This is what the seniors had to say:

• “The Sholom logo summarizes it well: Care, Compassion, and Community. Care and compassion are vital, and being part of the Jewish Community is, for me, key to the place I’ve chosen to live. I am home!”

• “Because I am Jewish – where else would I go? My kids are Jewish; they went to Talmud Torah. My Judaism is very important to me and so this place is important to me.”

• “I was living somewhere else when I first moved to Minneapolis to be near my kids. After two months, I came running to Knollwood Place Apartments. I wasn’t comfortable until I moved here; I wanted a Jewish environment. I want to spend time with others like me, with a common background. No matter where we grew up, we know each other.”

• “I am comfortable here; there are so many good things which take place. I grew up in this Jewish Community, and have always been part of it. It is important for Sholom to be a strong member of the Jewish Community.” • “I enjoy the Kosher food here. I love a Jewish menu with tastes and aromas from all times in my life; it brings back many memories of family gatherings.”

• “I believe Jews remain Jews through the years and it is important that as they approach older years they remain together with people with whom they shared the past, and who give their lives long-term meaning in history. That they are living as they believe God would want them to live.”

Your Tzedakah Acts Twice •

A community member commented how touched she was by the contributions to Sholom Foundation in memory of her husband.

Several individuals honored a long-time friend’s milestone birthday with contributions to Sholom.

Friends of a bride’s grandparents made donations in honor of the upcoming marriage.

Why contribute to Sholom? When making a tax-deductible contribution, your action benefits twice! A tribute donation honors and recognizes an individual or their memory while actively supporting the life-changing and dedicated work of Sholom. Your support helps provide care and services for over 4,000 individuals annually within a Jewish environment. What kind of tributes can I make? Donations may be made in honor of a birthday, anniversary, wishing a mazel tov on the birth of a baby or a job promotion, in memory of a dear friend, or loved one, to wish someone a speedy recovery or in appreciation of someone. How is the person or family notified? When a contribution is made, the individual or family is notified with a beautiful card designed by Sholom residents and will include your personal message.

May I direct my contribution? Contributions may be directed to Sholom Foundation, Sholom, the Sholom Auxiliary or to a specific program or fund. When thinking about a special way to celebrate a simcha, to recognize a loss, or to honor an individual or event, please consider making a tribute contribution to Sholom. Your tribute Honors and Supports.
