SOME HIGHLIGHTS

Hello Friends Jaime’s Bar Mitzvah Photomosaic - Steve and Diane Jason’s Bar Mitzvah

ARTIST STATEMENT 2003 - 2009

2003 - 2009 (age 45 - 51), I was working with my family in a highly demand ing business. My wife, Diane, and I had four kids, 2 boys, and 2 girls, all artists. Our boys earned their Bar Mitzvahs, one of them in Israel. I concentrated on a few major works and most importantly set the stage for my later works. My degree in Fine Art left me unskilled in graphic arts. I corrected that by taking the time to learn Adobe Photoshop and over time The Adobe Suite. If you asked my kids who my favorite child was back then they would all answer, Adobe, with big smiles.

With a strong technical background, I started to have an affinity for using software with my art. That is when I stumbled upon pho tomosaics. A photomosaic application uses thousands of photos. The software organizes them according to compo sition, contrast, and color and compares each to the main photo. The result is a single image created by thousands of photos. This project required me to digitize all of my work.

Since then, I have become fastidious in organizing all of my digital files. That exercise also led to the creation of something remarkable, the catalog raisonné of my art. Every piece has been documented and cataloged in a set of books in date order. You can follow the progression of my art from crayon drawings to the sophistication of today.

During this period a large portion of the time was dedicat ed to posters. They combine conceptual images with figures, poetry, and song lyrics. I was surrounded by music. I did not enjoy playing music but I liked to beconnected to it. Draw ing was my way.

I also found the back of my heels throbbing constantly. This led to surgery on both of my Achilles heels. I did them one at a time. The rehab was extensive. During the rehab that I started a fascination with making bugs. Since I liked lots of small experiments with styles they make for a convenient object.

Things that Happened 2003-2009:

2003 Space Shuttle exploded; Iran war; Yom Kipper war with Syria 2004 Mars Rover; Facebook launched

2005 Hurricane Katrina; Hurricane Wilma; Wilma left us with no power for 11 days.

2007 Apple iPhone introduced 2009 Obama elected

Notable work:

Uba Tuba - By juxtaposing multiple Tubas I created a very colorful compo sition.

Jaime’s Bar Mitzvah - After the Bar Mitzvah of our son in Isreal, I stayed for an extra week in a place called Sfadt, near the Sea of Galilee. I liked this place because there was an area of the town dedicated to painters. It has a strong spir itual place in history. I befriended one of the artist and he helped me to expand my way of painting by including dripping paint. His name was Catriel Efrony and has since died.

Jason’s Bar Mitzvah - I made a sensitive drawing of Jason reading his Torah portion which the Cantor sings. The Can tor trained Jason to read his portion. The background looks like a piece of matzah. A nice touch.

Slow Mover - My father had a life-threatening aortic aneu rysm. The immediate family went to Houston Texas where an ingenious doctor cooled his body and repaired the weakness in his artery. It was scary. I painted and worte a poem while he was in surgery.

Shark Valley - Based on a photo while on a bike trip to Shark Valley, a Florida State Park. It depicts a teenage alli gator partially submerged in the water. The piece is now on permanent display at the University of Florida in the student center called the Rietz Union.

Dreams Come True - I earned multiple grants to open a call center in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Because of this, I spent a lot of quality time up there. I use wood that has beaver teeth marks in it to give it spirit then wrapped it with fur, string, and beads. I was given access to a wood shop to make the base.

Insect Series - The beginning of an ongoing and evolving series based on bugs.

SHARK VALLEY, IS A PAINTING BASED ON A SET OF CANDID PHOTOS TAKEN BY THE ARTIST AT SHARK VALLEY STATE PARK, FLORIDA. ONE OF THE MOST EX CITING FEATURES OF THIS PARK IS THE FREE-ROAMING ALLIGA TORS. YOU CAN RIDE YOU BIKE AMONG THEM AND STAY ABOUT 10 FEET AWAY.

THE PAINTING DEPICTS A YOUNG ‘GATOR BASKING IN THE SUN, SURROUNDED BY SUN-BAKED WHITE LIMESTONE AND THE COOL FRESH WATER OF A CA NAL. VEGETATION AND NATURAL SAND MAKE THE TRANSITION BETWEEN THE WARM AND COOL COLORS, CREATING A BEAUTI FUL TRANSITION FROM ULTRA MARINE TO IVORY WHITE.

IN THIS EARLY WORK THE SIG NATURE BLOCK IS SIGNED STE PHEN SHOOSTY. LATER IT IS SHORTENED TO SHOOSTY. THIS ISMOST LIKELY THE FIRST TIME I USED THE NAME SHOOSTY. LAT ER IT WAS TRADEMARKED AND ALL OF THE WORK WAS SIMPLY SIGNED SHOOSTY. I WAS RUN NING A BUSINESS AND SIGNING CHECKS. I DID NOT WANT MY CHECK SIGNATURE TO MATCH MY PAINTINGS.

SHARK VALLEY, IS PART OF THE PERMANENT COLLECTION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA.

THE SMALL SECTION IN THE FRONT WITH THE METAL RAILING IS A PARK CREAT ED AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE SHOOK THE PROPERTY. I THOUGHT IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT PLACE FOR A CHILD TO DOVEN IN PRAYER. I PROCEEDED TO DRAW AND

PAIT THIS LOCATION IN THE SWELTERING HEAT. THAT IS HOW I LEARN THE EXPRES SION, “WILD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN,” REFERRING TO ONLY WILD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN WOULD STAND IN THAT KIND OF HEAT FOR ANY LENGHT OF TIME. I TOOK THESE PHOTOS WHILE MAKING THE PAINTING. IT WAS AMAZING TO ME TO SEE THE COLOR SHIFT. I NAMED IT, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, THINKING, HEAV EN, HAS DIRTY LAUNDERY WAITING.

DRAWING COMPLETED BY A STREET ARTIST ON THE TOP OF MONTMARTRE, PARIS, THE SAME LOCATION WHERE IMPRESSIONISM WAS START ED. I WISH I VISITED MONTMARTE WHEN I FIRST WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST. JUST BEING THERE YOU FEEL SOMETHING OF WHAT THEY MUST HAVE FELT.

HERE’S THE STORY I LEARNED: MONTMARTE IS LOCATED ON THE TALLEST HILL IN PARIS, A PERFECT PLACE FOR WINDMILLS. WINDMILLS ARE USED TO GROUND FLOUR. FLOUR TURNS INTO BREAD. BREAD CREATES CAFES TO SELL THE BREAD. ONCE YOU HAVE BREAD YOU NEED SOMETHING TO WASH IT DOWN. AT FIRST IT WAS MILK, BUT IT DIDN’T TAKE TOO LONG TO FIND WINE WAS A MORE POPULAR CHOICE. THUS A PARTY.

RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER BELOW THE HILL IS ALSO THE FAMOUS CABARET, LE MOULIN ROUGE.

IN 2004, I WENT TO THE PORTRAITURE SOCIETY OF AMERICA CONVENTION. BE FORE THE CONVENTION, I FILLED OUT A FORM. THERE WERE TWO CHECKBOX ES, ARTIST OR AGENT. I CHOOSE AGENT. LATER I WAS CALLED BY DECLAN WALSH. HE SAID I WAS THE ONLY AGENT IN THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES. I TOLD HIM IT WAS A LARK WHEN I FILLED OUT THE FORM AND WE BECAME FRIENDS. I SHOWED HIM MY OFFICE WHICH AT THAT TIME HAD OVER 300 EMPLOYEES IN THE HEADQUARTERS BUILDING. IT WAS IM

PRESSIVE. I WAS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A WAY TO GIVE OUR WORK MORE DEPTH OF CULTURE. I OFFERED HIM A FREE SPACE AND TOLD HIM I WOULD TELL ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS ABOUT HIM TO SEE IF WE CAN SELL PAINTINGS. IN RETURN, I ASKED HIM TO MAKE A FEW PAINTINGS THAT RELATE TO THE FAMILY.

Slow Mover

BY STEPHEN SHOOSTER, FRIDAY, 3 JULY 2009 AT 4.30 PM, HOUSTON, TX WRITTEN WHILE MY DAD WAS HAVING MAJOR SURGERY

ONCE UPON A TIME I WANTED A ROARING ENGINE WITH RED AND WHITE STRIPES, A FAST MOVER. I WOULD ROLL DOWN THE MAIN STREET REVVING MY ENGINE AT STOP LIGHTS; ALL HEADS WOULD TURN, A FAST MOVER.

THEN ONE DAY MY DAD FINDS OUT HE HAS A TICKING TIME BOMB IN HIS CHEST, A WEAKNESS IN THE ARTERY. WITHIN A WEEK MY WORLD IS UPSIDE DOWN, FINDING MY MOM AND BROTHERS PLAYING SCRABBLE IN THE ICU WAITING ROOM WHILE MY DAD FIGHTS FOR HIS LIFE.

I LET MY MOM WIN EVERY TIME, TO LIGHTEN HER SPIRITS AND BECAUSE SHE’S WAY BETTER THAN ME. WITH A TUBE IN HIS THROAT AND HEART EXPOSED, BODY COOLED DOWN, WE LAUGH IRREVERENTLY, NERVOUSLY, FULL BELLY LAUGHS.

WE HELD HOPE IN OUR THOUGHTS, NO OTHER CHOICE. FINALLY EIGHT HOURS LAT ER... ALIVE... REPAIRED. THINKING BACK, ALL I WANTED WAS A FAST MOVER.

NOW, FOR MY DAD, THE ONLY WAY BACK WAS THROUGH THE CHASM. THE ONLY WAY BACK TO OUR WORLD FOR HIM WAS THROUGH A DEEP VALLEY, BEING TEST ED BY 1,000 CHALLENGES. BANG! RESTART THE HEART, STITCH BY STITCH. THWACK, THWACK, STAPLES IN THE CHEST. STITCH BY LOVING STITCH, PRONTO.

ROLLING DOWN THE CAVERN INTO THE CAVE IT’S DARK; HE CAN’T SEE A THING... THE CAVE, THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT, THE FIRST STEP, NO WINDOWS, LOTS OF AT TENTION.

HE HEARS A NOISE.

A SUBWAY ASSAULT. HE THINKS, “HOW AM I BREATHING?” INTUBATED LIGHTS FLASH DRIP, DRIP, HE THINKS, “THE ENEMY MUST HAVE ME TIED DOWN.” HIS LEG TWITCHES... NO ENERGY... SLEEP. THE ONLY WAY BACK IS THROUGH THE CHASM. BANG, AWAKE AGAIN. CAN’T TALK. DRUGS MANAGE HIM, A LITTLE OF THIS... AWAKE, THAT... ASLEEP HAZE, NOISE.

HE THINKS, “WHO AM I? WHO IS HE?” THE ROBOT IN HIM RESPONDS. HE THINKS. “I MUST BE CAPTURED.” REST, TORTURE, REST. HANDS FLAIL, HE THINKS “I MUST ES CAPE, CAN’T TALK, CAN’T WARN MY BUDDIES. MARSHALING STRENGTH I HAVE BRO KEN MY HANDCUFFS.” HE THINKS WITH NO THOUGHT OTHER THAN FREEDOM, JERKS THE TUBE FROM HIS THROAT, FREE, I... I CAN’T BREATHE, DYING, TRAPPED, MEDIC! SAVED! OXYGEN, SAVED. RE GROUPING, HE THINKS, I HAVE TO ESCAPE. UNDER FIRE. KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN. GRENADE!

26

THEY GOT ME. CAPTURED. TRUTH SERUM. CAN’T... CAN’T FIGHT, DELIRIUM. NAME, RANK AND SERIAL... SLURRR, TAKING PUNCHES. I’M HERE, KIND OF... DELIRIUM... I HEAR FELLOW PRISONERS, “GET OUT, I TELL THEM TO GET OUT... RESIST!” IT’S FUTILE - UNCONSCIOUS.

I WOULD BE DRIVING DOWN MAIN STREET ALL HEADS TURNING, A FAST MOVER... ROARRRR

MY BUDDIES... THEY ARE SAVING ME. CARRYING ME AWAY FROM THE ENEMY. CLOSE CALL. OUT OF THE CAVE. I HOPE THEY DAMAGED THOSE GUYS. WEAK ... DRIFTING... SLEEP. SAFE FOR NOW.

“WHEW,” CLOSE CALL, RE-GROUP... TIRED BEYOND TIRED. NURSING ME BACK STILL STUCK IN THE VALLEY. “DOROTHY,” I CALL HER NAME, “GUIDE ME.”

HIS STRENGTH RETURNS SLOWLY, HEART BEATING. AGAIN FELLOW SOLDIERS RESCUE HIM. DRAG HIM TO A FIELD HOSPITAL. MORE NURSES, STRENGTH, SLEEP. RACING DOWN MAIN STREET IN MY FAST MOVER... ALL HEADS TURN.

HE THINKS, “THEY SENT ME BACK TO A REAL HOSPITAL. WALLS AND TOILETS COME INTO FOCUS. I MUST BE OUT OF THE VALLEY. I SEE DOROTHY - “HI.” “HI,” BACK... AND KIDS...THEY GET ME UP ON MY FEET... SO TIRED.

THEY MAKE ME WALK. HAND ME A WALKER, AND TEETH, AND HEARING AIDS, AND GLASSES. I WALK SLOWLY, ONE STEP AT A TIME, TIRED; SIT, SLEEP, NEED HELP TO MOVE, ANYTHING.

THE SUN RISES... THEY HAND ME MY TEETH, HEARING AIDS, GLASSES, BREATHING TOY, EVERY MORNING A ROUTINE, DRAW BLOOD...

AND ME, I GOT MY SLOW MOVER READY FOR THE DAY ONE STEP... ANOTHER.

I GOT MY SLOW MOVER, WHO NEEDS A FAST CAR. I GOT MY SLOW MOVER... STILL... DAD SURVIVED

I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GO ON A SAIL FISH ING TRIP TO MEXICO ON A PRIVATE YACHT IN 2004 WITH THOMPSON CIGARS. I DROVE TO THEIR OFFICE IN TAMPA AND BOARDED A SMALL PRIVATE PLANE. IT LANDED IN ISLE MEJOR, MEXICO. I WAS WITH DOUG CROWE THE OPERATIONS MANAGER FOR THOMPSON AND TWO OTHER VENDORS THAT WORKED FOR THEM. ONE WAS A MAN NAMED RUDY WHO WAS ONCE IN THE ARMY.

THE FISHING WAS WORLDCLASS. THE BOAT HAD A CAPTAIN, FIRST MATE, AND A SHIP’S MATE. WE SAT IN THE BACK UNDER THE SHADE WATCHING THE DEEP BLUE WATER AND OUR TALL FISHING POLES WHICH WERE SITTING IN LONG METAL CUPS.

IN THE SKY WE FLEW SOME KITE LINES THAT KEPT THE FISHING LINES FAR FROM THE BOAT. ONCE A FISH STRIKED THE LINETHE KITES WOULD DETACH AND THE ROD WOULD BE ACTIVE.

THE WHOLE THING WAS AN ART. THE YOUNG SHIP MATE WAS A LOCAL MEX ICAN BOY. HE CAREFULLY MADE THE BAIT READY, PERFECTLY TIEING A SMALL FISH WITH A LEADER LINE. ONCE A HUGE FISH WAS ON THE LINE AND WE STRUG GLED TO BRING IT IN THE

CAPTAIN BACKED UP THE BOAT UP.

I WAS SMITTEN TO GO ON THE TRIP AND SPEND TIME ON THE PRIVATE PLANE AND BOAT BUT THE EXPE RIENCE OF CATCHING FISH WAS AWFUL. THE GUYS WERE DRINKING ALCOHOL.

I DON’T DRINK, THE BOAT CREATED A SICKLY MOTOR OIL SMELL, THE ROLLING SEAS WERE SICKENING, AND AS A FISHERMAN, I FOUND THE EXERCISE OF BACKING UP THE BOAT TO BE DISAPPOINTING. I PREFER BACKWATER FISHING.

THAT NIGHT RUDY PICKED A FIGHT WITH ME. HE WAS SUCH A MEAN PERSON I FELT UNCOMFORTABLE SLEEPING AT THE APART MENT. THAT NIGHT I DID A CONTEST WITH ONE OF THE OTHER GUYS AND WE BOTH DID 100 PUSHUPS. IT WAS A TESTOSERONE FILLED TRIP.

THE NEXT DAY I DECIDED NOT TO GO ON THE BOAT.

INSTEAD, I GOT A GAS POWERED GOLF CART AND TOOLED AROUND THE IS LAND TO DO DRAWING AND PAINTINGS. AT ONE CORNER OF THE ISLAND, THERE IS A SCULPTURE GARDEN THAT JUTS OUT INTO THE OCEAN. IT’S A VERY FINE PARK. I LOVED THAT.

BACKGROUND - WHILE TAKING A DAY TO DRAW AT MOMA (THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, NEW YORK CITY), AND SEEING THE GAUGIN PAINTING, I SAW INNO CENSE, NATIVE MYTHOLOGY, AND A SECURITY GUARD. THE SECURI TY GUARD WAS MORE INTEREST ING THAN THE PAINTING AT THE MOMENT, ALIVE AND VIBRANT, ALERT, YET PASSIVE. I SAW VIG ILANCE. THE GUARD, WAS IN A ROOM THAT IS SAFE, COOL, PRO TECTED, AND HE NEEDS TO BE FOREVER WATCHFUL. VIGILANCE IS WHAT ALLOWS THE FIGURES IN THE PAINTING TO BE CHILD-LIKE WITHOUT KNOWING THEY WERE BEING SAFEGUARDED.
