The Art of Music 2019- 2022

My drawings and paintings on the subject of music is extensive streching back 50 years. I love making live sketches while watching and listening to the bands. I prepare myself like I’m one of the musicians. I get my things ready and wait until they are ready to play. When the music starts I feel the rhythm and begin to draw. When the music stops, I stop. The speed of the gestures makes for exciting results. My method is simple. I use needle-point ink pens from the office supply store. My favorites are the Pilot, Rolling Ball, Precise V5, or V7 with Black Ink. They have very fast ink. These pens keep up with the speed of my drawing. I have yet to find anything that works as well in an art supply store. I have also standardized on my favorite paper. It is 300 gram, hot-pressed, watercolor paper. The paper has a little tooth. It adds character to the final completed work. When I was taught gesture drawing in a studio with a live model we used cheap newsprint and charcoal. The idea was to use inexpensive materials to keep things loose. We would always start with ovals to find the shapes and then tune those in. It always consisted of timed poses. They ranged from 2, 5, 10, and 30 minutes, respectively. I deviate from this formal training while drawing the musicians by using squares and cubes instead of ovals. The results are exciting.

The first thing I do is look around and check the environment and especially the lighting. This helps set the mood and gives the drawing substance. I may add some background elements as the band sets up. Then, as the music begins to get into a groove, I feel the rhythm and start drawing. I never know ahead of time what I am going to end up with. I use cubism liberally. Because the musicians are moving around I frequently give them two noses, two heads, and ten arms. The shapes begin to interact and the drawing becomes a composition. It’s usually messy. When you first see my drawing you might not be able to pick out the figures. When the set is over I like to show the musicians my drawings. Their joy is genuine and infectious. I love the interaction and surprise when they see my work. The bands usually play from a setlist. They play the music that they practice over and over. I make a new unique drawing each time I listen to a band. Each drawing is an invention based on whatever runs through my mind to my hand. Back at the studio, I like to process the gesture drawings with my iPad Pro. I redraw the drawings using vectors. This allows me to sharpen the lines and tease out the highlights. The result is precision fine art that is scalable, exciting in detail, and exacting in the final work results.

Clarence Spady played 7-26-2021 at a free concert sponsored by the Honesdale County Creative Arts Council. They do these concerts frequently especially in the summer. It was held downtown on a beautiful lawn in front of the courthouse.

I was on an RV tour and discovered that musis was playing that night so made it a point to be there. I am two drawings and at the end of the show was brought on stage for photos. Later the works was added to the blog and I was asked if they can use the images for futre banners. I agreed. It’s nice ot make friends all over based on the arts.

We were walking around Chicago a lot. The traffic lights have little men below them. PEN AND INK They light up when you can walk. Above them are the traffic lights themselves. Red, 12” X 12” Yellow Blue and Turning Signal. I made the traffic light and then connected it to the Winter’s Jazz Club Sketch 1 bass player using the keys of the bass. The bass player is oblicious to this. Connected they become a Walking Bass Line.
