community that welcomed everyone without judgment through good times and struggles.” She also mentioned the variety of outreach programs that were offered including starting

a support group for people suffering with depression and bi-polar disorders. “We kept faith and hope during our struggles.” Zion’s congregation has been a part of the Lincoln section of Ephrata since 1852. It was originally a Union Church, meaning it shared a building with another congregation: Salem Lutheran. Groundbreaking for the current building on Apple Street, was held in April 1901 and Dedicated

in June 1902. Known by some as “the Back Church” it now shares a parking lot with Salem Lutheran, the front church. The stately brick church features some beautiful stained-glass windows, hardwood floors and a stenciled ceiling. Although the congregation is dissolving, Church Council is looking for ways to continue the ministry that has been a part of Lincoln for more than 160 years. All-you-can-eat Beef Potpie dinners, concerts and movie nights, and the always popular Easter Egg Hunts

have been regular events at Zion’s. Maintaining a church presence in the community is very important to the members of the church. Many churches have closed in recent years and the buildings are torn down or converted to apartments or other businesses. Zion’s doesn’t want that to happen in Lincoln. “We think this is a wonderful opportunity for another church group to take possession of this beautiful building and continue to do God’s work in the community.” Now decked out for the Christmas season, services continue to be held every Sunday morning at 8:45

a.m., but plans are underway for a final Service of Celebration to be held the Sunday after Easter, April 19, 2020. No details are available at this time, but it will be a celebration and remembrance of the ministry of Zion’s. For more information about Zion’s, or if you know of a group who might be interested in maintaining the building as a House of Worship, please contact Council President, Michelle Fisher at 717-271-8775, or email at michellynn81@ gmail.com.

Storytime Registration At Lititz Library

One of the main goals of Play K is making the transition into kindergarten a smooth one for children and families. Each week, the nine key learning areas from Pennsylvania’s Learning Standards for Early Child hood are reinforced as children and parents play together and participate in activities. Each program leads with a circle time, where children can learn about sitting down, raising their hands, and taking turns. Children will also be introduced to calendar skills, new vocabulary, shapes and writing. Afterwards, there will be an activity and/or craft that reinforces the topic being covered and develops their fine motor skills and scissors skills. Play K will be offered every Thursday from Thursday, January 2 to Thursday, February 20 at two different times: 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. To register, call the library at 717-354-0525, or visit the library at 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland. Advance registration is requested, but not required.

Chapter Eight Part One The farmhouse and the barn each have certain handily accessible outbuildings grouped about them. There are no hard and fast rules concerning these buildings; some farms no doubt have all the buildings mentioned in this lesson, while others may have no more than a house, a barn, and possibly one or two others. Also, there are no hard and fast rules concerning their placement in one area or another. The following account of the buildings on our young guide’s farmstead is thus well within the realm of possibility. O! wann ich yuscht en Bauer waer, Un hett en gut Schtick Land, Dann hett ich aa mei Seck voll Geld, Un aa noch in der Hand.

Announcing A New Pennsylvania German Reader and Grammar This week we are very pleased to be able to announce to all our good Dutch readers the publication of A Pennsylvania German Reader and Grammar by Earl C. Haag, our friend Im Friehyaahr seet er’s Hawwerfeld, and colleague, who teaches English and German at Penn Un blanst, aafangs im Moi, State’s Schuylkill Campus. We received our copy the week Grummbeere, Welschkann un so Sach; of May 9. Every chapter, with the exception of the last chapter begins with a short poem in the dialect, Doch kann er en sei Gaarde geh which is followed by a reading selection in the dialect and in Un brauch sei Sach net messe, English. This is followed by a Dutch to English vocabulary Un alle Daag frischer Selaat based on the reading selection. Following the vocabulary Un gude Arrebse esse.* there are “Vocabulary Notes,’ which give additional information on some of the vocabulary items. The remainder of the chapter is given over to a grammar lesson. *David B. Brunner, from “Wann ich yuscht en Bauer Here are excerpts from Chapter Eight, which will give waer.” you a cross-section of a typical chapter. *** Der Hof Am neegschde Daag is mei Friend, der Tschan, widder verbeikumme, un mer sin glei in die Summerkich neigange. an der Kich aabaue losse, un hen daer alt Holsoffe in die Summerkich neigschtellt. The Farmyard On the next day my friend John came by again, and we went right into the summer kitchen. There stands the large kitchen stove of black iron. He had never seen such a large, old iron cookstove. The stove had once stood in the kitchen, and then my parents had the summer kitchen built right in back at the kitchen, and placed that old wood stove into the summer kitchen. *** Vocabulary aabaue: to build on (add to) es Eise: iron eisner: iron (see note) die Sache (plural): things Vocabulary Notes eisner: Like schee and glee, eis adds an n before endings. Grammar A. Past participles Used as Adjectives. 1. Past participles may be used as adjectives, both predicate adjectives and attributive adjective. No changes are made and no endings are added to past participles used as predicate adjectives: Der Schpeck iss gschmokt The bacon is smoked. Die Oier sin gebrode - The eggs are fried. *** We are certain that those readers of the Eck who are searching for additional printed materials in their effort to learn to read and write the dialect will welcome Professor Haag’s new Pennsylvania German Reader and Grammar. We recommend this new book to them without reservation. At the same time, we would like to call this book to the attention of those many, many Old Order parochial schools here in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and elsewhere. We have here a book which can also be used to teach dialect speakers of any age to read and to write our beloved Mudderschprooch! We are especially grateful for this new book on Pennsylvania Dutch as we move ever closer to the celebrations of the tercentenary of the settlement of Germantown in Pennsylvania in October of 1683! The publication of this new book is all the more timely when we are reminded by the United States Census Bureau that “more Americans can trace their ancestry to Germany than any other country.” This new study, made public last month, said that 28.8 percent of Americans had reported themselves as being at least partly of German ancestry. That means that about 52 million Americans consider themselves at least partly German. And we Pennsylvania Dutch were the first German group to arrive in 1683. We’ve been here ever since and we have made our mark! Let’s stop hanging heads because we’re Dutch and at long last stand up and be counted! June 2, 1982 Es stolz Bischli-Gnippli

Forest Hills Church Hosts Bible Series

Adamstown Library January Events

Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola, invites the public to its annual Winter Bible School Bible series to be held on four Wednesday evenings in January, be ginning on Wednesday, January 8. Sessions will begin with a shared meal served from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by teaching sessions for adults and activities for children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade at 7:00 p.m. This year’s theme will be “Who Is This Jesus?” “Jesus,” writes Anabaptist theologian Palmer Becker, “is the center of our faith.” But who is this Jesus? 2,000 years after the fact, what do people make of Jesus’ life, teachings, death and resurrection? How do different Christian traditions come to differing ideas about what Jesus meant? Winter Bible School will invite you to consider key questions about Jesus that Christians have faced throughout history. Sessions will have Biblical and historical reflections from Pastor Jon Carlson, followed by group dis cussions of key questions such as: “Is Jesus Lord?”, “Is Jesus Coming Soon?”, “Is Jesus a Fighter?” and “Is Jesus American?” Please call the church at 717-656-6227 or email fhmc@foresthillschurch. org to reserve your space at the shared meal.

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

A Close Personal Relationship by Pastor John Fredericksen Shortly after meeting the woman who became my wife, I knew she was the one for me. It was hard to explain, but she had captured my heart. I thought about her as soon as I woke in the

morning, continually during the day, and she was one of the last things I thought about before going to sleep. I consistently pursued a relationship with her allowing all other relationships to become secondary. I not only confirmed that I loved her, I also expressed to her that she satisfied and completed me like no other woman could. Many of the same principles that make close human relationships work are the same in our personal relationship with the Lord, after salvation. Even though the program has changed from the Law of Moses to the principles of grace, walking with the Lord every

day is essentially the same now as it was for David. In Psalm 63, he expresses many of the things that made his daily walk with the Lord such a sweet and joyous experience. David did not merely have a passive interest in the Lord. He longed for a vibrant relationship with the God of his salvation. He told the Lord, “my flesh longeth for Thee [as] in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is” (v. 1). Since David wrote these words “when he was in the wilderness of Judah,” where water was extremely scarce, his description of being thirsty for the Lord pictured his surroundings. Just as only water can satisfy the

need of one in the desert, David realized that only God could satisfy the thirst of his soul. These were not mere empty words on the part of David. He promised the Lord: “early will I seek Thee” (v. 1). David, like Abraham before him (Gen. 19:27), was in the habit of beginning the early part of his day in communion with the Lord (Psa. 5:3). Just as two people in love long to see each other, David longed “to see Thy power and Thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary” (63:2). As David went through the day, he continued to think about the Lord and talk about Him. He wrote, “…my lips shall

praise Thee. Thus will I bless [or praise aloud] Thee while I live” (vv. 3b-4a). When a man and woman love each other, they talk to others about the one they love, extoling each other’s virtues. It was the same with David, who happily expressed the virtues of the Almighty. David’s walk with the Lord was so fulfilling that he couldn’t help but express it. He told the Lord, “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise Thee with joyful lips…in the shadow of Thy wings will I rejoice” (vv. 5,7b). When two people are in love and maintain a healthy, growing relation-

ship, they too make a conscious decision to be satisfied and joyful in time together. David experienced an even richer and more complete joy by being in the satisfying presence of his God. David not only began his day in fellowship with the Lord and spoke of Him throughout the day, he also ended his day with the Lord. He wrote, “I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches” (v. 6). For soldiers and shepherds, the night was divided into three watches: from sunset to 10 p.m., from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., and from 2 a.m. until dawn. In verse six, David is sharing that,

to college, hoping they remember what they taught them, plus other fears. They need to remember Joseph trusted God just as you need to trust God. People have assurance they are not by themselves; friends can help lift people up in all things. Mary and Joseph were not alone. God gives people the strength they need. Look at the stars to remind them God is there shining down on them. She also gave the blessing before the meal. After the delicious Christmas meal made and served by the kitchen committee, Mary Martin introduced entertainer Jeff Krick, Jr., an Elvis impersonator from Berks County. Jeff is an award-winning tribute artist. At age 19 he finished sixth in the world. At 23 he is one of the most decorated tribute artists. He sang some of Elvis’s favorite songs. He started out with “Here Comes Santa Claus,” then Elvis’s most favorite song “Blue Christmas.” “Amazing Grace,” “Love Me Tender,” “If Every Day Was Like Christmas,” “Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me” and Elvis’s 1968 comeback special song “If I Can Dream” plus others

The Friendly Circle held it’s December 2019 meeting on Wednesday, December 11 at Akron Church of the Brethren. Sam and Connie Sherk greeted 107 members and four guests. President Jan Witmer welcomed everyone and wished everyone a Merry Christmas. President Witmer also conducted the meeting. The theme song “The More We Get Together” was sung followed by “Joy To The World” and “Silent Night” led by Chorister Bob Groome. The Friendly Circle donated $1,000 to Ephrata Area Social Services general fund, which was accepted by Executive Director Joy Ashley. Pastor Sandy Gideon, from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church was the meditation speaker. She read the Christmas story from Matthew telling them about Joseph and his message from the angel telling him “Do not be afraid.” People become afraid at times like when they send their children off

throughout the night, sleep sometimes evaded him because even then he was thinking about the Lord and His greatness. David also explained: “My soul followeth hard after thee” (v. 8). Just as a young man oftentimes pursues hard after a young woman to win her love, David fervently pursued his relationship with the Lord. Of course, David did not have to win His love. The Lord already loved David. Nonetheless, David was not casual or complacent in the way he nurtured his relationship with the Lord. His walk with the Lord meant too much to him for his efforts to be anything less than diligent and wholehearted. In principle, we should exert the same kind of effort in our relationship with the Lord as we read that David did. Are you following hard after the Lord? We encourage you to pattern your walk with Christ after the example of David’s wholeheartedness. Make a strong effort to make each day one of fellowship with the Lord from beginning to end.

Roundtable Program

Author and Historian Ron Kirkwood will present a program entitled, “Too Much for Human Endurance”: The George Spangler Farm Hospitals and the Battle of Gettysburg. Hosted by the Lititz Public Library this program will take place on Thursday, January 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the library. The bloodstains are gone, but the worn floorboards remain. The doctors, nurses, and patients who toiled and suffered and ached for home at the Army of the Potomac’s XI Corps hospital at the George Spangler Farm in Gettysburg have long since departed. Happily, though, their stories remain, and noted journalist and George Spangler Farm expert Ronald D. Kirkwood brings these people and their experiences to life in “Too Much for Human Using a massive array of Endurance”: The George firsthand accounts, Kirk Spangler Farm Hospitals wood re-creates the and the Battle of Gettysburg. sprawling XI Corps hospital complex and the people who labored and suffered there— especially George and Elizabeth Spangler and their four children, who built a thriving 166-acre farm only to witness it nearly destroyed when war paid them a bloody visit that summer of 1863. Stories rarely if ever told of nurses, surgeons, ambulance workers, mus icians, teenage fighters, and others are weaved seamlessly through gripping, smoothflowing prose. The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable is a group Serving Contractors, Shed Builders, & Homeowners with dedicated to the study, Spray Equipment & Coatings for more than 30 years discussion and learning in depth about America’s War Between the States. * Movie theater hack: “When buttering up your popcorn, grab a straw and stick it down into the tub. Line up the straw with the butter dispenser, and you can distribute butter into the lower layers of your popcorn. Remove the straw and finish off with butter over the top.” -- P.A. in Florida

* “Defog your bathroom mirror with a quick shot of shaving cream. Smear all around and wipe off with a clean, dry face cloth.” -L.A. in Georgia * Use one leg of a pair of stockings over the hose of a vacuum cleaner to “dust” a bookcase. If you have small knickknacks they won’t get sucked up, but dust will. If your stocking gets clogged by a dust bunny, just wipe it off and continue. * A toilet paper or paper towel roll slit down the side makes a handy clamp for keeping wrapping paper from unraveling.

* Go Green Tip: Most large chains have really gotten on the bandwagon with reusable shopping bags. Here’s a tip to help you have one with you at the

right moment. Keep several in the trunk. Purchase one or two foldable bags. There are some that fold small enough to fit comfortably in a woman’s purse. * Common substitutions: Recipe call for arrowroot starch? Substitute allpurpose flour. * “Cabbage leaves go limp in freezer, making them easier to roll. This is especially helpful if you are making a big batch of cabbage rolls!” -- V.W. in California * Clean and decorate a Pringles chip can to store a collection of colored pencils. Keep the lid on for portability. You can even roll up some plain paper to store inside for an on-thego drawing kit. * Need to heat up two plates of leftovers? Form the food into a ring (which is better for even heating anyway), then set a microwave-safe glass or mug on the center of the plate. Set the second plate of leftovers on top. * If you can’t paint your dorm or rental apartment walls, here’s some ways to dress up your decor: Try removable stickers from home decor stores or online. Also you can hang a tapestry. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, and if the material is light enough, you can use removable hooks, like Command strips. Or, try creating a pattern with washi tape, which also is removable.

East Cocalico Lions Visited By District Governor The East Cocalico Lions Club recently held its regular meeting at the Reamstown Fire Hall with President Paul Keller presiding. The club was honored on that night by the official visit of their District 14-D Governor, William Grager. After everyone enjoyed a delicious meal served by the Ladies Auxiliary, Region 3 Chairperson Dennis Ensinger introduced District Governor Bill. District Governor Bill gave a short speech on the theme of “Service” and thanked the club for the Service that they give to their community. Each year the District Governor creates a list of Requested Contributions for various organizations. Among them is Leader Dog for The Blind, American Diabetes Association, Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind, Four Diamonds and VisionCorps. Shown in the photo is Lion President Paul Keller presenting a check in the amount of $3,969 to District Governor William, which represented the club’s 100% payment to these requested contributions. We educate before we estimate!

Get to know Allison Bruckhart, student of the month at Lititz Area Mennonite School. Allison’s favorite class is Language Arts because she has a great teacher that makes learning interesting. Allison has one older sister named Jessica and a German Shepherd puppy named Georgia. Allison goes to Middle Creek Church and is involved in their junior high youth group. She is on the LAMS archery team, middle school choir, worship team, she takes piano lessons, and plans to participate in the middle school spring drama. The thing she likes most about LAMS is being able to talk with friends. After Allison graduates, she plans to go to Manheim Central. She enjoys listening to music. Her favorite artists are For King and Country, Lauren Daigle, and Francesca Battistelli. If Allison’s not at school you could find her playing with her puppy, riding horses, or building things out of LEGOs. Allison admires Joni Eareckson Tada because even though she is paralyzed she trusts God to take care of her. If Allison could change one thing in the world, it would be to stop smoking and drinking because smoking gives you lung cancer, and drinking makes your head not work properly. Allison’s greatest accomplishment in her life is being on the honor roll. Written by: Abigail Zimmerman
