In October and November, the Lititz Christian seventh and eighth grade classes participated in the first annual PA State cyber robotic coding competition (CRCC). According to the sponsor’s website, “CRCC is an innovative robotics tournament that excites and engages students in coding. Schools can compete and involve students through gaming and competition in STEM, coding and tech literacy.” The classes’ hard work in completing computer coding missions allowed them to place 13th in the state qualifying round. That placement earned Lititz Christian an invitation to the PA State CRCC Finals, which were held Tuesday, December 4 at Harrisburg University.

The school’s eighth grade team finished the live coding competition eighth in the state, and the school’s second team finished in the top 40. The three phase live competition included over

Outside My Window”

Author and Historian Janet Croon will present a program entitled, “The War Outside My Window.” Hosted by the Lititz Public Library and The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable, this program will take place on Thursday, January 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Sit alongside a disabled teenage Southerner as he records his experience in “The War Outside My Window: The Civil War Diary of LeRoy Wiley Gresham, 1860-1865.” This unique document – rare for its teenager’s perspective, rare for its register of daily pain across five years – is a testament to what it means to watch the world of the Confederacy slowly fall as one’s body fails too. LeRoy Gresham, from Macon, Georgia, began writing his diary at twelve years old while bedridden from an injury. He covers the goings on of his home, family, slaves, and the people who pass through town and his house, as well as what he reads in newspapers until the war comes to an end, and he also dies, at the age of seventeen. The Lancaster Civil War Roundtable is a group dedicated to the study, discussion and learning in depth about America’s War Between the States. For more information email lancastercivilwarround table@gmail.com. The program is free and open to the public.

Denver Women’s Club Meeting

The Denver Women’s Club held their monthly meeting on Tuesday, No vember 20 at Faith United Lutheran Church in Denver. The table display was by Diane Fichthorn; hospitality by Denise Burkhart and Shirley Sweigart; hostesses Jane Lesher and Carol Taylor; and Devotions were read by Deb Ebersole. The program for the evening was presented by “Storyteller” Rita Clarke. Rita was originally from Philadelphia and later moved into the area where she was employed by the Warwick School District for several years before starting a career in story telling. Rita told a story about a little girl and Christmas and how the little girl discovered that Christ mas is not just about the decorations and gifts, but more importantly about

6A - Wednesday, January 2, 2019 - Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News”

Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck By: The Late C. Richard Beam A collection of “Deitsch Eck” columns from past issues of The Shopping News honoring the late C. Richard Beam.

(Originally published in the May 27, 1981 issue of The Shopping News) Tales From Pennytown (II) Die Faule Oyer Sadie Smucker, Age 12 Hoscht du schun ennichebber gsehne faule Oyer esse? Ugh! Awwer, oh, was waar letz? Sie hen gschpaut un gebloose wie wild! So wie sie gemacht hen! Noht sin sie bletzlich heem gange. Why, Elmer, du settscht dich schemme! Faule Oyer fer en Party?

*** Rotten Eggs Have you ever seen anyone eat rotten eggs? My Dad still remembered when his Uncle Elmer had! When he was a little boy, there was a mushroom place that used to fetch manure from his Uncle Elmer. One time when they were loading manure, they found a nest of eggs. Oh, how they enjoyed (ate) those eggs! They made a hole in the shell and sucked it (the contents) out. Ugh! They enjoyed it so much that the next time they came, they took eggs without asking! Elmer though (to himself): he’ll show them something. When they came the next time, they loaded manure as usual. Then they searched for eggs. And they found some. Then their party began! But, oh, what was wrong? They spit and they blew like crazy (wild)! My, how they carried on! And they departed for home very suddenly. Why, Elmer, you should be ashamed of yourself! Rotten eggs for a party? *** Dient Net Abweisse! *** Don’t Show Off! When Dad was a small boy, he had a small sheep. He gave

him the bottle and often played with him. One evening company came. Dad got his lamb out and started to show him off. He ran about and jumped about with the little sheep hard on his heels. He kept it up the entire evening. The next morning the lamb was dead! It does not pay to show off! *** Two weeks ago we printed three delightful Dutch anecdotes from the pens of pupils in the famous Pennytown School, which is attended by both Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonite children. We are indebted to the senior teacher, who encouraged her advanced pupils to write these fascinating accounts. As we read and reread these stories, we say to ourselves: if twelveyearold youngsters can do this, why can’t their elders? We again want to encourage our readers young and old to share with us in the dialect their experiences! *** Sunday morning, May 10, we worshipped for the first time with the Old Order Amish congregation at Schaefferstown. The service was held on the Fisher farm, which is located on the southern edge of Schaefferstown and adjoining on the west our Alexander Schaeffer Farm, whose ancient farmhouse dates to the early 1700s. We deeply appreciate the invitation of the Fisher family to attend this service, for it was in this house that the late (Rev.) Thomas R. Brendle was born in 1889. “Tom” Brendle served as a “Parre” (minister) in the former Reformed Church for 50 years and in his lifetime collected possibly the most important collection of Pennsylvania German folklore in existence. This collection of almost 100 notebooks is the property of Historic Schaefferstown, Inc. Worshipping with our Old Order Mennonite or Old Order Amish brothers and sisters is always a very special experience for BischliGnippli. Relatively few “outsiders” do, hence many of the neighbors who live in or near Old Order communities fail to appreciate the depth of the Old Order culture. Last January, we attempted to point out the significance of the Moravian musical culture, which flourishes in the ancient town of Lititz. Since the middle of the 18th century, Lititz has been an important center for Moravian (if you’re real Dutch, you know it’s “Herrnhuter” in the dialect!) music. Valentine Workshop To Benefit Soldiers, Vets And Elderly Spend a fantastic afternoon glittering, gluing, coloring and crafting Valentine’s cards at Ephrata’s non-profit community art center, Art of Recycle, located at 27 Cloister Avenue, in Ephrata. On Saturday, January 26 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Art of Recycle will be partnering with Blue Ridge Communications to host their third annual “Touch a Heart” event at their fab ulous art center. This Valen tine Card Making Workshop is a family-oriented, free event hosted in the Undersea Activity Room. All of the materials and tools needed to make your special Valentines are provided by Art of Recycle. Make a card for a veteran, make a card for a senior in a nursing home, and make a card or two for yourself. It’s a day to celebrate and create a message of love to share with your friends and family and to share with people who might not otherwise receive a Valentine card. When your cards are finished, Art of Recycle will deliver them to Blue Ridge Communications. United States soldiers serving abroad, veterans and resi dents of local nursing homes will receive handmade and personally signed Valentine’s Day cards this year, thanks to those who participate in Blue Ridge Commun ications’ Sixth Annual “Touch a Heart” Valentine campaign. Due to your thoughtfulness, over 3,000 cards were delivered in 2018, with a goal of 3,500 for 2019.

This initiative is designed to deliver personal, hand made cards to those who might not otherwise receive one. These cards will serve as powerful messages of joy and hope to our men and women serving around the

world, our veterans and the elderly, as they are so appreciative of the outpouring of kindness. “It’s a way to make sure that as many people as possible get remembered on that day,” said Cindy Mellinger,

Marketing and Community Relations Coordinator for Blue Ridge. “And it teaches children the importance of giving to someone, especially something they made themselves.” Children may trace their hands on the card, and then decorate it any way they wish, adding their name and a personal message. Lititz Library Family Storytime

Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck By: The Late C. Richard Beam A collection of “Deitsch Eck” columns from past issues of The Shopping News honoring the late C. Richard Beam. (Continued From Page 6A)

(Originally published in the May 27, 1981 issue of The Shopping News) have never heard a Moravian anthem of the Lititz Trombone Choir or have never admired the ancient “Moravian Baroque” architecture (which is a direct reflection of Old World architecture in Herrnhut, now in East Germany) on Church Square in Lititz or have never heard music flow from a Tannenberg pipe organ Tannenberg had his shop in Lititz! you have been deprived of experiences, which by right should belong to you by virtue of your local birth! On the edge of Lititz, you will find one of the more recent Old Order Amish church districts in Lancaster County. Last summer we worshipped with this congregation on the Wenger Farm not too far from Catfish (Oregon). It was a glorious day and the service was held in the great barn. Two and a half weeks ago, we worshipped and sang with the Schaefferstown congregation, which is a short buggy ride to the north of Lititz. The Dutchman who has never sat in the midst of an Old Order Amish congregation and sung their ancient hymns they sing from their 400yearold Ausbund, an early German hymnal again has failed to partake of a musical and religious experience, which is not only unique, but also deeply moving. Both traditions, the Moravian and the Amish, are equally valid. Both cultures are rooted deeply in the Protestant Reformation and flourish in Lancaster County as nowhere else in the world. How much do our children learn about this part of their heritage in school? The Moravians have always been leaders in the education of the young. In 1925, the first Old Order Amish parochial school was established in Delaware. In recent years, the Old Order Amish and the Old Order Mennonites have increasingly seen the wisdom of sending their children to their own parochial schools. If you have never visited an Old Order parochial school, you are unaware of the excellence of the Old Order parochial school education. I guess we Dutchmen still have a lot to learn about each other. SHOPPING NEWS of Lancaster County

14A - Wednesday, January 2, 2019 - Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News”

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

(Continued From Page 18A of the 12.26.18 issue of The Shopping News)

Paul’s Kind of Church by Pastor Paul M. Sadler Troas: “And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart

on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight” (Acts 20:7). Today, the sound preaching of the Word has been replaced in most local assemblies with alternative worship services and marketing schemes to build a popular church that everyone wants to attend. There is rarely a month that goes by that I don’t have a colorful brochure come across my desk on Church Growth Programs. Sadly, the church growth movement has relegated the Word of God to a secondary role in favor of song services, skits, films and testimonials. This concept is merely an attempt to draw larger audiences

with the idea that “bigger is better.” If they provide more social functions and innovative programs, they’ll be better equipped to meet the needs of the community. It’s a lofty goal, but a flawed concept. The problem here is this: when the church across town announces they’re building a new gym or they plan to have a contemporary wor ship service with gifted musicians, probably before long many of your people will be going to this new venue. It wouldn’t be the first time a local assembly was left with a small handful of people and a large mortgage. Unfortunately, all of this is at the expense of

the Word of God, which is the very thing that will minister to the needs of the people. The temptation is very real for local churches to go along with the trends of the day, but is it our desire to please men or God? Many church boards are fearful that if Paul’s apostleship and message are proclaimed in their fullness, it may upset someone and drive them away! I remember several years ago I was on the platform with a young Grace pastor who spent the first ten minutes of his message apologizing for Paul’s apostleship. He felt we made too much of Paul and that we need to tone it down in the

Grace Movement or we were going to offend people. I’m sure most of his comments were for my benefit, but he was speaking to the wrong person. I came out of the confusion of denomin ationalism years ago, and I have no intention of returning, as this young man was suggesting. I thank God without ceasing that I’ve been set free from the bondage of tradition, and I’m going to tell anyone who’s willing to listen that they, too, can be delivered if they acknowledge Paul’s gospel. Beloved ones, Paul is God’s spokesman for the Church today; thus, to speak disparagingly of God’s

apostle is to reject the counsel of God itself. Paul’s epistles reveal the mind and will of God for the Body of Christ during this dispen sation. Shall we apologize for the Word of God that has been delivered to us by our apostle? I think not!! While we should speak the truth in love, the truth is offensive (Gal. 5:11 cf. Eph. 4:15). I recall the first time someone told me I was a hell deserving sinner — I was offended by that statement! But I thank God that I was offended, because through the process I got saved. We must be very careful not to remove the “offense of the Cross” by sugarcoating our words with flowery platitudes, which can

The East Cocalico Lions Club recently held its regular meeting at the Reamstown Fire Hall with President Tim Hegeman presiding. After everyone enjoyed a delicious meal served by the Ladies Auxiliary, Rod Redcay, who is the founder and Executive Director of Real Life Community Services, was introduced. He told the club about an exciting project - The Declaration House. Even though it is happening next door in Denver, the outcome would also affect the East Cocalico community. Rod explained that in October of 2016, in cooperation with Lancaster Housing

condemn men to perdition. One of the purposes of the local church is to provide an atmosphere where the Word of God can be received with thanksgiving. The preaching of the Word must be the centerpiece of our worship of Almighty God. True worship begins with God being glorified in the teaching of His Word. It is then enhanced by the singing of hymns, spiritual songs, prayer, and testimonials. For the most part, this order has been reversed in our churches today, which has left the Lord’s people floundering spiritually in their Christian lives. When we speak here of preaching the Word, we are not referring to a 12-minute devotional message on Sunday morning, which has little profit. Rather, whenever we gather around the Word to worship, the preferable way to open the Scriptures is to do a verse-by-verse exposition of a particular book, such as the Book of Romans. We believe this is the most profitable and effective way to teach the Scriptures. Remember, Paul reasoned with his hearers, he alleged, he taught them the Word of life. Whatever format you use, “preach the Word,” and the Lord’s people will respond as those at Thessalonica did to Paul’s preaching.

Opportunity Partnership, Real Life Community Services purchased the building formerly known as the “Denver House.” Their vision is to renovate the building in order to provide affordable apartments and offer a community service “Hub.” Welsh Mountain Health Centers will offer medical, dental services and behavioral health counseling. Work has started to renovate the building and excavate the grounds. The projected finish date is the summer of 2019. The entire East Cocalico Lions Club was so impressed with this project

that a check for $5,000 was presented to Chris Hibbert, Director of Social Work at Real Life Community Services, at a later club meeting. Shown in the photo is Lion President Tim Hegeman, along with many of the members of the club, presenting the check to Chris Hibbert. Donating to a worthy project such as this is just

Two of the members are near completion of their Summit Awards, the

highest rank in Venturing. One of the members is the Council Venturing Officers Association President. They also anticipate two high school seniors to receive an extension to pursue the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Rank in college, a daunting opportunity they have waited for since their Eagle Scout brothers joined Cub Scouts. To say these girls are motivated to be involved in BSA Scouting activities is an understatement! The West Earl Lions Club charters Crew, Pack and Troop 82 and has consistently maintained support for youth in the Brownstown area through Scouting since 1958. Recruitment for both BSA Cub Scout Pack, Scouts Troop, and Venturing Crew 82 is going on right now. Keeler

Ephrata High School Abigail Keeler Senior

Showing her spirit and determination in all of her work is second nature for Ephrata High School senior Abigail Keeler. During the school day, she assists English teacher Gemma Rasmus as a student intern. She can also be found enjoying her favorite class, AP Spanish. Additionally, Keeler helps out the Mountaineer newspaper staff by handling their advertisements as the Business Manager. Not only is she involved at the high school, but she brings her positivity to Akron Elementary School in the Big and Little Sisters Club. Every Monday, Keeler assists the elementary schoolers with their homework and teaches them important life lessons alongside other high school girls. In addition to her interaction with younger kids at Akron Elementary, Keeler enjoys spending time with her nephews at home. “It gives me so much joy to see them growing up and knowing that I am helping them become intelligent and confident young men, said Keeler. Also at home is Keeler’s father, whom she notes as her biggest role model. Helping with school assignments and paying attention to the minute details of her life are both on the long list of ways Keeler’s father has influenced her. “He is so caring towards my mom, my sisters, my nephews, and I, said Keeler. “Throughout my whole life, he has done everything he can to keep our family whole. After high school, Keeler plans to attend college to study Special Education. Keeler deems her decision to go to college as one of her biggest accomplishments. “Throughout my high school career, I was not confident in myself that I would be able to handle the intensity of a college education, but with the guidance of my teachers and my parents, I have decided that I can and will reach my full potential, said Keeler. Ezekiel Oberholtzer is 13 and is an eighth grade student this year at Lititz Area Mennonite School. This month, like other past months, the next student of the month has been selected. This month, Ezekiel was chosen for his positive character, and his hard work at the LAMS middle school. Ezekiel has one sister and brother, both of which are younger than him. His role model is his father, who teaches him about how to live a good life. One of his favorite things in school is the electives classes held during seventh period every Thursday. The three electives he either has been or will be involved in this year include computer coding, chess club, and ceramics and sketching. His favorite class is also art, so it would make sense he chose those electives. Other after school activities he partakes in are baseball, archery, and the LAMS choir. Outside of school, some of Ezekiel’s hobbies are collecting coins, reading books, and video gaming. Ezekiel attends New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, and plans on going to Ephrata Mennonite High School after graduating from LAMS. He was asked what the one thing in the world was that he would change today. As one of the larger issues with our world today which has always been a struggle to fight, he responded with the world having no disease. Written by: James Esbenshade
