“Pieces From The Past” - Featuring The Terre Hill Historical Society
“Pieces From The Past” continues this week, featuring the Terre Hill Historical Society. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies.
This week’s featured item is a very interesting map for
local history buffs. The map was recently donated to the Terre Hill Historical Society and among the many properties it has recorded on it, is a special plot of land that was owned by former Vice President Mike Pence’s greatgrandfather! The name is misspelled on the map as Pentz instead
of Pence, and dates back to the mid to late 1700s. The map will be on display at all times and can be viewed on the third Thursday of each month at the Historical Society, which meets at 7:00 p.m. Shown in the photo is Bob Jackson, chairman of the Historical Society, along with the unique map, and
also a close up detail of the Pentz property.
The Terre Hill Historical Society’s meeting is held the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Terre Hill Community Center. The club encourages anyone who has an interest in Terre
Hill and its rich history to come out to any meeting night and join them in this effort to preserve the history for future generations. Also, the Society is always looking for anyone who has old artifacts from Terre Hill’s past to add to their

Bob served the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay community as a professor of mathematics in the natural sciences faculty for thirty years. He contributed after retiring by mentoring students, being involved in research and writing, and continuing his work on environmental issues, specifically water quality issues in Wisconsin and
around the world. His specialty was applying mathematical principles and techniques to a wide range of scientific problems with practical real-world applications. He served as chair of an interdisciplinary science unit for a number of years and was engaged in university governance as well. He was a kind and gentle man, wellrespected by administrators, faculty, and students.
Among the many recognitions he received was the Barbara Hauxhurst Cofrin Professorship of Natural Sciences (in 1997), of which he was extremely proud. He was also a leader of the International Visiting Scholars Program which brought
people from around the world to the Green Bay area to share their expertise in a number of fields.
Bob got great joy out of his international collaborations, including a year at Aalborg University in Denmark and many years of work with colleagues at Beijing Normal University, including a year spent in China, which Lena shared with him. He was a strong believer in the peaceful exchange of ideas with the hope that cooperation would lead to better lives for all. He never crossed paths with someone without showing them respect, kindness, and curiosity.
He also was a decades-long supporter of UWGB basketball, especially the women’s team, whose games he attended religiously.
His greatest joy came from his 62-year partnership with Lena, and their children Kent (ex-wife Sue Ulschmid) and Meg (Scott Bahr). They survive him along with his sister, Elizabeth Wenger, brother, Luke Wenger, and many friends, colleagues, and former students around the world.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring. To send online condolences, please go to www.Pfotenhauer FuneralHome.com.

A Ham Story
At the time when the physician still made house calls, the fellow, John became very ill. The doctor stopped in once in a while to see him. One day, he stopped in again. The wife was in the kitchen when the doctor came in. Then she
Neighborhood Santa Helps Local Families In Need
As Neighborhood Santa closes out their 15th year helping local children and their families have a little Christmas, they would like to give a huge thank you to those that continue to support them.
On a special note, a lot of new restaurants have come to the area. However, since it was built here in Ephrata, Applebee’s has been here supporting local families in any way they can from Veterans Day meals, backpacks for local students, Neighborhood Santa, Stockings for Soldiers, plus so many other community give backs.
Thanks to the continued generosity of the community, they have helped over 800 neighborhood kiddies and their families! The invited local children, plus their families, received a holiday meal and gifts from two recent events: Applebee’s in Ephrata, and Denver Fire Hall. Neighborhood Santa
makes sure the children all receive among their special requests from Santa warm blanket, clothing, coats, stuffed animal and board games.
Many tokens of gratitude also go to Denver REAL Life Community Services, Ephrata Area Social Services, and their own personal friends and family
said, “John is in his bedroom. Just go up the stairs.” The physician took his stethoscope and put it to his chest. He listened to John’s breathing, took his temperature, measured his blood pressure and did his duty.
When the physician came down, he said, “I have bad news for you. John is not well. It won’t go too long and John will no longer be with us.” Then she said, “well, what shall I do for him?” “Oh,” he said, “let him rest. He can have anything to eat that he wants. It’s anyhow too late to pay attention to his diet.”
When the doctor had gone, John’s wife went upstairs and into his bedroom. She said to her husband, “John, did you hear the good news?” “No,” he said, “what is it?” “Well, the doctor said you can have anything to eat that you desire. Are you hungry for anything that I can make for you?”“Yes, indeed!” he said. “Do you remember the ham that we have hanging in the attic? I could eat a piece of that ham.”
who generously give up time to help them with this great endeavor. They thank you for helping them help neighborhood families have a wonderful holiday season. Without the compassion of this community, named and unnamed, they would not be able to continue their mission: “To continue being able to give Christmas and
other holiday traditions to neighborhood children in need.”
Moving forward, Neighborhood Santa will start preparing for their 16th year in 2023. If you want to be a Neighbor helping a Neighbor, contact them at 7178082185.
“Oh, no, John,” she said. “You can’t have that. We should save that for the funeral!” ***
On March 25, David Hornberger, who lives on “Keenichschtrooss” in “Effredaa” mailed to us a new series of three stories, which we feature this week and the following two weeks. The first tale, EN SCHUNKELFLEESCH SCHTORIE, may already be familiar to some of our readers, for it is a classic tale and typical of the humor of the Pennsylvania Dutch. Hearing John’s wife tell him that she wants to save the ham in the attic for the meal following his funeral will come as no surprise to the older readers. Our younger readers will have to be reminded that a meal to which, at one time, all were invited was always served following the funeral services. John’s wife wanted to be very sure that she had enough meat on hand for that meal.
Dave, we salute you again!
A dictionary question: How many of our readers say “Schunkelfleesch?” How many of you say “Schunkefleesch?”

Why the Concern?
By Pastor Ricky Kurth
“Wherefore, when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone.
“And sent Timotheus…to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith.
“…when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your
faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain” (1 Thes. 3:1,2,5).
According to the Acts record, the Apostle Paul had only recently spent three weeks in Thessalonica, establishing the church there. Why then was he so eager to check back with them? Twice we read that he “could no longer forbear,” and so sent Timothy to encourage and establish them, and to let him know how they were doing. Yet, as far as the record is concerned, no messenger had come to him with alarming news about the Thessalonian church. What had happened to make him so concerned about the
state of their faith?
The answer is found in Acts 17:510. Paul had just been run out of town—their town! And he was concerned lest this humiliating treatment at the hands of the Thessalonian Jews might have shaken their faith. It is, after all, no small thing when your spiritual leader is thrown out of town!
Not that this had bothered Paul personally. He was accustomed to such violence and was not disturbed by it, as evidenced by the fact that he immediately focused his total attention on the ministry of the gospel at Berea (v. 1012). Indeed, we have his own testimony in 1 Thessalonians 2:2 about the similar event which had
brought him to Thessalonica: “…even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.”
Yes, Paul fully realized “how great things he must suffer” for the Savior he represented (Acts 9:16), but his beloved Thessalonians could not fully realize this. His ignominious expulsion from their city had doubtless left them shaken, especially with “all the city on an uproar,” and the house of Jason assaulted merely on suspicion of harboring the fugitive apostle and his companions (Acts 17:59).
But there was yet another reason for his concern. These same Jews of Thessalonica, when they knew that “the Word of God was preached of Paul at Berea…came thither also, and stirred up the people” (v. 13). Paul was now safely out of their reach in Athens, but he knew they had returned to their own city, and would now doubtless redouble their persecution of the young Thessalonian church.
Little wonder the apostle lost no time in dispatching Timothy, his trusted coworker, to their side, to assure them that
“…no man should be moved by these afflictions; for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
“For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know” (1 Thes. 3:3,4).
How well, indeed, they had come to know this! And how they must have welcomed Timothy to their assembly, and rejoiced over the subsequent epistle from their father in the faith, who evidently cared for them so much!
Finally, Paul wanted them to understand that their afflictions came as a result of living in the dispensation of grace, and not as a result of persecution in the Tribulation, which some were affirming. It is true, says the apostle, that we are

Biblical Message THIS WEEK’S
appointed to afflictions, but “…God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” (5:9).
It is evident from the context that the “wrath” they were not appointed to is the wrath of the Tribulation.
Consider: God has not appointed us to wrath, but God has appointed us to “obtain salvation” by our Lord Jesus Christ. Since the Thessalonians were already saved, this can only refer to the completion, the fulfillment of their salvation, i.e., at the rapture of the church. Paul confirms this view by a similar statement in Romans 13:11:
“…for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.”
Furthermore, verse 8 of 1 Thessalonians 5 describes the finishing touch to our armour as “the hope of salvation.” What else could this phrase refer to but “that blessed hope” (Titus 2:13), the completion of our salvation? When we trusted Christ, we were immediately saved from the penalty of sin, and we are today being saved from the power of sin. But some day, at the rapture, we shall be saved from the very presence of sin—and it may be soon!

service, reservists and inactive ready serve. The very first food box distribution was held recently at the Ephrata American Legion and was hosted by E.A.S.S. and
sponsored by multiple local organizations.

Austin Thompson Senior
“If I could change the world, I would make it so people could have discussions and debate without it turning into a fight.” This quote was said by senior Austin Thompson who is passionate about bettering the debate of the world alongside his devoted interest in modern technology.
Thompson mentions that his greatest accomplishment is building his computer. Having to work for the money and source all the parts indicate his knack for problem-solving and his curiosity for computers.
With his interest in modern technology, Thompson’s favorite class at Ephrata High School has been Mounts Tech Support where he works to help students with any possible technology problems they may have. Thompson says, “I enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together. I also really like computers.”
While at Ephrata High School, Thompson has participated in different extracurricular activities such as Yearbook Club and German National Honors Society.
Outside of school, Thompson uses his technology skills in church where he helps out with different lighting and camera work. Other than his participation with the church’s camera work, Thompson enjoys playing video games, playing guitar, weightlifting, and watching documentaries.
Perhaps because of his love for documentaries, Thompson admires many past figures. “I admire a lot of historical soldier figures. Audie Murphy is high up there because of his grit. He was considered the most decorated soldier during WW2.”
In the future, Thompson plans to attend either a four-year college, possibly Messiah, for cybersecurity or Thaddeus Stevens for a computer-related career.
Kaleb Zimmerman 6th Grade
Kaleb Zimmerman is in 6th grade and is a kind young man who is also very athletic. He likes LAMS because of the nice people and because it is a Christian school where he can spend more time with God and learn more about God. Kaleb likes science because of his grades and his teacher. He also likes science because of the experiments and just having a lot of fun with friends. Kaleb enjoys soccer and football, and participated in both of those activities in school, as well as middle school choir. Kaleb really enjoys soccer, and he has played it his whole life. Kaleb participated in track and field and got first place on the running long jump. He also participated in the Lititz soccer team, which won first place in the league, and now he is also January’s student of the month! Kaleb enjoys fishing and hanging out with friends. He also enjoys hunting and recently shot his first buck with his dad! He will always remember this milestone because shooting his first buck feels like an accomplishment. Kaleb hopes to get good grades this year and move on with middle school. He also wants to become better at soccer because, after he graduates high school, he hopes to become a soccer player in bigger leagues. Kaleb’s role models are his dad (who helps him improve in his hobbies) and Christiano Ranaldo, a professional soccer player like he hopes to someday become. Kaleb goes to church at LCBC. His favorite verse is Romans 14:8 because it reminds him that God is always with him wherever he goes. Kaleb believes the world would be a better place if there were more Christian churches all around
world so that more people can learn more about God.
