Continuing to make a difference to library services, the Friends of the Adamstown Area Library presented their annual contribution of $25,000 to Library Director Carolyn

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese This year’s Toys For Tots fundraiser, sponsored by Lancaster County Marine Corps League Chapter 294, exemplifies the ideals of helping others and making a difference. Eric Bair, who is the owner of the Sports Barber, is the local marine representative in the annual toy drive. Eric has made it his goal to collect new bikes instead of toys for the last few years and this year, thanks to his efforts, the community and businesses, a total of 301 brand new bikes were collected. Just before Christmas, two Toys For Tots tractor trailers pulled into downtown Ephrata to receive the bikes. Shown are a small portion of the bikes as they line the sidewalk in preparation to be picked up. Anyone who witnessed the collection of new bikes on the sidewalk were left utterly speechless at what a community that strives to make a difference can accomplish.

Much Fun Was Had During The 8th Annual Jingle Bell Trolley Tour Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Attendees for the 8th Annual Jingle Bell Trolley Tour began their tour on Friday, December 10, with Family Night at Ephrata Church of the Brethren. Fun things were on hand - crafts, a face painter, and oh, Santa was there too! Coffee and hot chocolate were provided while Ephrata Church of the Brethren provided cookies to enjoy while waiting for the trolleys. Mainspring of Ephrata would also like to thank the emcees for Family Night. They all did a great job and they appreciate you volunteering! On Saturday, December 11, the fun continued with Adult Night kicking off at Old Republic Distillery Ephrata. Attendees enjoyed a complimentary “Jingle Juice” beverage along with some fun treats on the trolleys! Thank you to Kel Lee Fasnacht for being the emcee for adult night! Attendees have voted and this year’s winner of the tour

Brenda J., wife of Richard K. Novak, New Holland; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three brothers: Clyde S. Hibshman, New Holland; Ivan S. Hibshman, Browns town; and Landis “Luke” Hibshman Jr., Ephrata. Janet L. Strauss, 87,
is the Earhart House. The Earhart’s started the tradition of decorating their house for Christmas when they moved in ten years ago. Their youngest child was only one at the time and they wanted him to embrace the magic of the season. They now have a one-year-old granddaughter and are excited to continue decorating to see her smile when the lights come
on! The family loves the holiday season and the most important part is making sure the kids enjoy the wonder and joy that comes along with Christmas. Jim’s personal dream is to one day have the house light up like the Griswolds, so each year they add a little more. Mainspring of Ephrata would like to say Congratulations to the
Earhart Family and thank everyone for taking the time to participate in the Jingle Bell Trolley Tour this year. The self-guided tour, via the Mainspring “Uniquely Ephrata Tours” app, was also available this year. The tour followed Santa and his friends through the ten stops in Ephrata. Santa tells them about each house and/or business and
their decorating traditions. A passport was made available again and includes money-saving coupons from a variety of local businesses. The self-guided tour attendees can take advantage of these coupons to support those awesome local establishments. Mainspring of Ephrata would to thank their many local sponsors for supporting the Jingle Bell Tour this year. They could not have done this without their support. Thank you to all the homeowners and businesses for accepting the invitation to participate in the tour this year. The time you took to decorate for the enjoyment of the community is much appreciated. Lastly, thank you to the Jingle Bell Tour committee for all your time and effort to plan this year’s event. They all look forward to next year’s tour! Shown in the photo, from left to right, are (front row) Michelle, Chance and Jim Earhart; (back) Sue Burkholder, Lisa Willwerth and Ashley Scheirer.

Cat Voices Displeasure With Zoom Meeting Ban DEAR PAW’S CORNER: During the pandemic, my cat “Rusty” would jump into my lap or roam across my keyboard during Zoom meetings with the rest of my team. Everyone thought it was funny. Last month I was hired to work remotely for a new company. My supervisor told me the cat cannot appear on screen. If I put Rusty into the bathroom during video calls (I have a studio apartment), he yowls loudly until I let him out. What can I do? I need to keep this job. — Jake V., Alexandria, Virginia DEAR JAKE: Pets can be a lot of fun to introduce in casual business meetings, but they can’t always be present, especially if your boss has forbidden it. Here are some things you can try: — Create a “go to work” routine. We tend to follow the same format every morning (wake up, drink coffee, get dressed, sit at our computer), so add two things to the routine: attention time with Rusty, and leaving for work. Give Rusty 10-15 minutes of undivided attention somewhere between coffee and getting dressed. Once you’re dressed, say “I’m going to work!” loudly, and ignore Rusty for several minutes. — Make Rusty more comfortable when separated from you. Put his favorite cat bed, toys and drinking water into the bathroom when he’s sequestered. — Teach “go away” signals. Make a hissing noise or snap your fingers when Rusty tries to jump up. — Set up physical barriers around the desk, like sticky-side-up duct tape. — Wear headphones during calls if Rusty continues to meow. — Incorporate “attention breaks” during the day where Rusty gets your undivided attention, away from the desk. The more structure you can build into a remote workday, the better. If Rusty can count on a comfortable, sequestered space during meetings, plus regular attention breaks from you, he may settle down — and save your job. “Pieces From The Past” - Featuring The Historical Society Of The Cocalico Valley Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese “Pieces From The Past” continues this week, featuring the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies. These epaulets, worn by Jacob Hibshman of Ephrata when serving as a Brigadier General in the Pennsylvania State Militia, were a gift to the Historical Society from the late John Harry Hibshman. Gen. Jacob Hibshman was born December 30, 1771, the son of Wendel and Hannah (Heffley) Hibshman. Wendel was a major in the American Revolution, serving in the 111th Battalion of the Pennsylvania troops. His farm was located at the intersection of Springville and Schoeneck Roads, Ephrata Township, where his home still stands. Jacob Hibshman’s farm was located along what is now North Church Street, north of the Cocalico Creek,
and here he and his wife, Elizabeth Aktinson, reared seven children. In his early life Hibshman was a farmer, but in the course of time he attained prominence and respect in a number of fields. He was an Associate Judge for Lancaster County from 1811 to 1819, served as the county’s deputy surveyor for more than twenty years, and also served for many years as a justice of the peace.
In 1818 Hibshman, a Republican, ran for and won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the counties of Lancaster, Dauphin and Lebanon. In 1820 he sought reelection but was defeated by his opponent in the prior election, James Buchanan. In 1824, when Gen. Lafayette of France visited the United States, Hibshman was selected as chairman
of the Lancaster County committee formed to honor the distinguished guest. At the time of Lafayette’s visit to Lancaster, Hibshman was a Brigadier General in the State Militia, a position he held for twelve years. He helped to found the Northern Mutual Insurance Company of Ephrata in 1844, and served as its first president. Hibshman, who died May 19, 1852, was the great-
grandfather of John Harry Hibshman, long president of the Ephrata National Bank and the founder of the Hibshman Scholarship Fund. The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley is devoted to the geographic region, which includes the present townships of East and West Cocalico, Ephrata, Clay, West Earl and a portion of Earl. The Society collects and interprets a wide range of objects, from high-end antiques to the humble and the quirky. All contribute to our understanding of the region and its inhabitants from around the time of European settlement into the 21st century. In addition, the Society maintains a large and continually growing collection of manuscripts, print items and photographs. The Historical Society library is now open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The museum is open on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For more information, please call 717-733-1616.

THIS WEEK’S
Biblical Message
Be Sure of What’s Pure! by Pastor Ricky Kurth “Unto the pure all things are pure…” (Titus 1:15). Boy, a verse like that sure begs the questions, “Who are these pure people, and why are all things pure for them?” Well, the word “pure” just
means “clean,” as we see when Solomon asked, “Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?” (Pr. 20:9). The answer to this rhetorical question is that none of us can make our heart clean! That’s why we need God to save and purify us. So when sinners believe the gospel, God saves them by His grace, “purifying their hearts by faith” (cf. Acts 15:9)—so much so that Paul could tell even the carnal Corinthians that they were “washed” clean because they were saved (I Cor. 6:11). That means the “pure” people in our text are saved people. But when Paul says
that “all things are pure” unto the pure, it doesn’t take a Bible scholar to know that he can’t be saying that sinful things are pure for saved
people. No, in the context, Paul is telling Titus how to deal with “vain talkers…of the circumcision” (Tit. 1:10),

dispensation of grace, we are all “baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles” (I Cor. 12:13). That means when our apostle Paul says that “we are not under law, but under grace” (Rom. 6:15), even Jewish believers are free to eat meats that God once classified as unclean. That’s why Paul wrote that “commanding to abstain from meats” (I Tim. 4:3) is one of the many “doctrines of devils” that we should avoid (v. 1). If you take a doctrine that God gave specifically to people in one dispensation and impose it on people in another dispensation, it becomes a doctrine of devils. When

unsaved Jews who were teaching the “vain jangling” of the Law (cf. I Tim. 1:6,7). These teachers of the law were probably insisting that certain meats were “unclean” for the pure because the law said they were (Lev. 11:4,5,6,7,8 etc.). For nearly 1500 years, Jews under the law would not eat impure foods. Of course, Gentiles who were not under the law would eat anything. That’s one of the reasons the Lord called the Gentiles “dogs” (Mt. 15:26), for a dog will eat anything! Your dog might be a fussy eater, but even he will eat anything if he is hungry enough. Paul added that “every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused” (v. 4), that’s just another way of saying, “unto the pure all things are pure.” The apostle expressed this truth again when he wrote, “…the kingdom of God is not meat and drink…all things indeed are pure” (Rom. 14:17,20). Had Paul written those words during Old Testament times, someone would have steered him to Leviticus 11 and reminded him that the kingdom of God did involve meat and drink under the law. Then they would have led him out to be stoned for saying otherwise! I know there are many who insist that unclean meats are still impure for the pure, but the only reason God pronounced certain foods unclean was to teach the Jews that certain people were unclean—the unsaved Gentiles (Lev. 20:24,25). We know that Peter understood this, for after the Lord told him he could eat unclean meats (Acts 10:916), he said about the Gentiles, “God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean” (Acts 10:28). So to say that certain meats are unclean today under grace is to say that the Gentiles are still unclean, and God says otherwise. It’s better to agree with Him when He says, “unto the pure all things are pure.” Now would somebody please pass the bacon!
East Cocalico Lions Club Gives Gift Bags
For many years, the East Cocalico Lions Club, along with the Reamstown Fire Company, has been sponsoring a community Christmas event at the Reamstown Fire Hall. This event included a magic show, gifts, balloons, cookies and always a chance to tell Santa what you wanted for Christmas. With the rise of COVID19 cases the club decided, for the safety of all participants, not to host this event. But the East Cocalico Lions still wanted to do something special for the youth in the community for Christmas and with the help of several local businesses and the approval of the Reamstown Elementary School, 400 “Christmas Gift” bags, which were decorated by Reamstown Elementary Students, were put together, with the help of Cadette Troop 70514, and given to each student at the
elementary school. Some of the items included in the bag were, free passes/discounts to local organizations and lots of snacks (Goldfish, chips, pretzels, apples, oranges). CoChairpersons, Lions Sandy Lucas and Tim Hegeman delivered these 400 bags to the elementary school where they were given to each student. Pictured here is Lion Member, Sandy Lucas in front of some of these “Gift Bags” which were given to the students at the Reamstown Elementary School. The East Cocalico Lions is part of the largest service organization in the world with clubs in over 209 countries or geographic areas with over 1.35 million members. Distributing Christmas gift bags to the students of Reamstown Elementary School, is just one of many ways which
the East Cocalico Lions “Serve” as they continue “Lighting the Way” in their community. If you are interested in finding out more about the East Cocalico Lions or would like to join them in service projects such as this one, please call 717336 5311.

Quiet. Persistent. Thorough. Not easily frustrated. These are words that technology education teacher Rodney Myers easily uses to describe senior Ashton Kunkle. “It’s his willingness to repeat and to stick to it until he gets it right that sets him apart.” Throughout his years at Ephrata High School, Ashton has been the recipient of multiple robotics awards, winner of the Mountaineer Recognition Award, maintained a 3.89 GPA, and held part time job at Sharp Shopper. Myers has been one of Ashton’s role models since freshman year. They have had several classes together, including Project Lead the Way computer and engineering-based course work. During his time in Robotics Club, Ashton has won several awards at competitions run by VEX, in addition to receiving separate awards from the school board. He was a part of the first freshman team to ever qualify for the robotics tournament. However, he doesn’t spend computer time solely on robotics. Ashton puts together songs on his home laptop and enjoys creating electronic music. He even runs his own Youtube channel called Avinix. Clearly, Ashton is a goal-oriented person who admits that he would love to work for Elon Musk and Tesla because “his brand is incredibly impressive with all the lives he has impacted.” It is no surprise that Ashton finds motivation in being positive and creating good goals in life. Recently he has become really Written by: passionate about school. Eleonora “It’s become a priority for me. I mean, why Scutaru not do well in school?”
