With the new year officially underway, one local family decided to come up with a way to raise money to help those impacted by the COVID19 situation and offer some hope for a better 2021. The Pfautz family of Ephrata came up with the idea to have a bake sale. Parents Dana and Seth guided the children with
their kindness project, which was a way for their kids to be actively involved in caring for others. The initial idea stemmed from one of Dana’s daughters and her friends who had a lemonade stand this summer to help get school supplies for Ephrata students in need. The siblings spent most of an entire day baking and
handing out flyers and had the sale the following day. It was a lastminute idea and the kids were amazed at the support and number of people who stopped. When all was said and done, they received over $1,500 in donations. So far they have sent a Visa gift card and some diapers and wipes to an unemployed server

Mister Drucker: Der anner Owed hab ich de Sarah (was mei Irische Fraa is) die Glocke vorgelese, un wie ich so rumbledder, seh ich, das en Circus noch Berlin kummt. Sell hot mich an en Experience erinnert, die mir vor about 40 Yaahr in Walkerton gehappened is. Well, uff em Heemweg hab ich mei Meind uffgemacht, DISCOUNTS FOR LARGE QUANTITY ORDERS!

Die Leit sin yetzt zum Middaagesse heem un ich hab mich an die Tents rum gedriwwe, als uff eemol seller Baas vun der Seitschow kumme is un zue mir gegsaagt hot: “Johnny, if you’ll play the band in the sideshow this afternoon, I’ll give you a ticket for tonight’s circus performance.” “Never mind, I’ll teach you.”

*** This past April, Isaac R. Benevolent, optimistic, and outgoing are words that describe Ephrata High School senior Olivia Mountz. Olivia has participated in cheerleading throughout her four years at EHS, as well as being a competitive all-star cheerleader at a nearby gym for the past two and a half years. Olivia shows leadership qualities that transcribe to her work as a senior officer for the Mini-Thon club and a proud member of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS). She also earned a spot on the Homecoming Court at Ephrata High School. “Olivia is a hard worker, organized, and is an amazing leader. Her compassion for others is her most special quality,” says EHS Mini Thon leader Victoria Socie. Becoming a pediatric nurse has been on Olivia’s mind since she was fifteen when her stepmother encouraged her to take a CNA course. Upon completing the course Olivia realized that she wanted to switch her dream of becoming a teacher to a nurse with dreams of possibly opening her own practice. When Olivia is not attending school, she enjoys practicing her cheer skills and tumbling skills as well as writing. She also values quality time with her best friends Michael and Hannah as well as her family. “Olivia projects positivity. She understands that without hard work, there isn’t much growth. This is true in both writing and in life,” says language arts teacher Gemma Rasmus. In 2012, Olivia and her family faced a devastating hardship when Olivia’s grandmother noticed changes in her health, which would lead the necessity of a lung transplant. When facing a devastating change, Olivia notes that her grandmother’s fear was the possibility of missing a moment of her grandchildren growing up and missing the sight of Olivia’s kindness. “I have always felt that no matter what happens, things could be worse. I live my life with that attitude, I accept things Written by: Anastazia that happen to me as God’s will,” says Toro-Ayala Olivia.

THIS WEEK’S
Biblical Message
Are You a Servant of God?
by Pastor Ricky Kurth “Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle…” (Titus 1:1) Did you ever wonder why Paul, an apostle, began his epistle to Titus by first referring to himself as a servant, the Bible word for a slave? Well, it helps to learn
why the apostle opened two of his other epistles this way. First, he identified himself as a servant to the Romans (Rom. 1:1) because Rome was the capital city of the Roman Empire, and the citizens of Rome were used to owning slaves, not being slaves. Paul himself had been born with all the rights and privileges of Roman citizenship (Acts 22:2528), yet he was humbly willing to acknowledge that he was a servant of God. So in writing the saints in Rome, the apostle introduced himself as a servant to remind them that they too might be free citizens, but that “he that is called in the Lord…being free, is Christ’s servant” (I Cor. 7:22).
Paul also introduced himself as a servant to the Philippians, where two of the ladies were feuding (Phil. 4:2), and everyone in the church was taking sides.
When they received Paul’s letter, they probably thought that he was going to take a side in their squabble and settle it in so doing. But rather than siding with either

not of one mind, the only way they can become of one mind is to let the mind of Christ govern their lives— the Christ who “took upon Him the form of a servant.” If you have a dispute with a brother in Christ, I can tell you whose side Paul would be on. He’d be on the side of whoever was willing to be the other one’s servant. Lowliness like that will solve any and all disputes, but it is high spiritual ground. But then, isn’t that what you have in mind when you sing “Lord plant my feet on higher ground?” Finally, the reason Paul called himself a servant in addressing Titus was because Titus was an intimidating man (II Cor.

faction, he made it clear that he was writing to them “all” (1:1), praying for them “all” (1:4), thought highly of them “all” (1:7), longed after them “all” (1:8), rejoiced with them “all” (2:17), and wished them “all” well (4:23). His marked and repeated use of the word all in this epistle shows that he refused to take sides in their feud. Instead, he told them to get on the Lord’s side, saying, “…be likeminded…being …of one mind…let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God…took upon Him the form of a servant…” (Phil. 2:2-7). 7:15). Spiritual leaders like that sometimes need to be reminded that the strongest leaders of men are nothing more than servants of God. Titus might have been a tough man, but that’s not what made him fit to pastor a church. His fitness was found in his willingness to be a servant of God and lead His people in serving Him by example, and not by force (cf. I Peter 5:3). I’ve heard horror stories of pastors who act like little Napoleons— and some of you have lived such horror stories. Men like that would do well to remember the humility Paul displayed when he referred to himself as a servant, and stop dominating the faith of God’s people (II Cor. 1:22), and “by love serve one another” instead (Gal. 5:13).

Farmersville Fire Company was chartered in 1948 after operating for several years as an auxiliary to the West Earl Fire Company. The first apparatus was a 1933 Chevy Chemical. The department currently responds with a 2000 Pierce Dash Engine, a 2009 Pierce Arrow XT Pumper/Tanker and a 2004 Freightliner Squad. The Farmersville Fire Company responds to just over 200 calls per year in their coverage area of West Earl Township and a small section of Earl Township. Under the leadership of Chief Earl Good (shown in the bottom left photo), they have approximately 45 active members that participate in weekly in-house training as well as state classes. Many members are trained as First Responders/EMTs, Hazmat Operations, vehicle rescue and have Firefighter 1 or Firefighter 2 certification. In addition to training and responding to calls, the department also hosts an annual Fire Safety Day with the schools in their first due response area. Shown in the top left photo, from left to right, are members: (kneeling) Paul Stauffer, Stanley Zimmerman, Cleason High Jr., Andrew Seibel, Kenneth Zimmerman and Tyrell Weaver; (standing) Lamar Zimmerman, David Shirk, Captain Wilson Zimmerman, Terry Golden, Chief Earl Good, Captain Ray Zimmerman and Captain Larry Zimmerman. The fire company holds multiple fundraisers throughout the year, including a Mud Sale on the fourth Friday of every March, as well as spring and fall chicken BBQs. The Farmersville Fire Company Auxiliary operates a food truck at auctions, and also provides food to firefighters when they are responding to calls. Volunteers are always needed; anyone interested can stop by the station any Tuesday evening. Donations can be sent to 74 East Farmersville Road, Ephrata, PA 17522. Visit The Shopping News of Lancaster County on Facebook to see more photos of the Farmersville Fire Company.

“Pieces From The Past” - Featuring The Berks History Center Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese “Pieces From The Past” continues this week, featuring the Berks History Center. In this weekly article, Shopping News readers will learn about local items housed in local museums and historical societies. The label on the exhibit shown here reads, “The parlor was the best room, a place that boasted the family’s finest furniture. It served family functions such as reading after supper and peaceful games in the evening. The parlor served as the setting for receiving and entertaining guests, meetings, courting, church visits, and the laying of the dead.” The Victorian parlor has been remembered as, ‘stuffy, crowded with useless and bizarre objects, and dirty because of the dust their myriad contents collected.’ Many historians define the American Victorian Age roughly between 1876 and 1914. The main theme of the Victorian Age in the United States is change. This era saw the admission of twelve new states, which doubled its geography. The country’s
population doubled, as did the number of foreign-born citizens. Americans were becoming more diverse, more urban, and more mobile. In the face of a resurgence of COVID-19, the Berks
History Center is temporarily closed until further notice. They will resume making appointments for the Henry Janssen Library, museum, and book store as soon as possible. For now, the staff will continue to respond
to inquiries Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You can reach them at 610-375-4375. You can support the Berks History Center by becoming a member, or by donating to the organization.
