The Struggle to Find Pet-Friendly Housing DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m having a very hard time finding a new apartment where the management will allow my two cats. And those that do allow pets have really high pet fees. I’m not sure what to do. Is there a law or something that would force landlords to allow pets? After all, there are laws to keep animals off the street, but it seems like apartment rules banning pets may cause more pets to be abandoned. — Christine B., Atlanta DEAR CHRISTINE: I wish I could say there were laws like that — you make a very good case for them. But I doubt that there are any laws like that on the books in the U.S. While some might say you just need to keep looking for an apartment that takes pets and has reasonable fees, the reality is that fewer apartments allow pets at all. A new study by the National Association of Realtors surveyed homebuyers, and found that 61 percent said “it is very difficult or difficult to find a rental property or a homeowner association that accommodates animals.” At the same time, 95 percent of buyers who are pet owners said that it’s important for housing communities to allow animals. Pet owners paid about $150 a year in fees to communities — either association dues or rental applications — in 2016, the study said. But that didn’t include fees like monthly dues for pets that some apartment communities charge. For now, keep looking. Some new communities are adding pet-friendly features like dog parks, while others are revisiting their policies. Be prepared to pay a nonrefundable deposit for each pet, however, no matter how accommodating the apartment community is. THE

SHOPPING NEWS of Lancaster County

Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, January 8, 2020 - 9A

Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck By: The Late C. Richard Beam A collection of “Deitsch Eck” columns from past issues of The Shopping News honoring the late C. Richard Beam.

(Originally published in the June 9, 1982 issue of The Shopping News) Pennsylvania Dutch Folklore From St. Marys County, Maryland A month ago, an envelope addressed to us was postmarked in Prince Georges, St. Marys County, Maryland. It was an especial delight to hear from St. Marys County, for it is very rarely that we do so. Since the family that wrote to us originally lived in Lancaster County and now lives in St. Marys County, Maryland, we decided to share the contents of this letter with our Eck readers in The Shopping News as well as in Die Botschaft. This family, which has requested that no name be mentioned, lives 45 miles south of Washington, D.C., where four Gmeene (church districts) are located. Here are some of the verses which this family learned as children. (We hope they have been passing this lore on to their children and grandchildren.) *** Eens, Zwee, Drei, Hicke, hacke, hei. Hicke hacke, Hollerschtock, Wieviel Hanner hot der Bock?

Neighborhood Santa Program Was A Success Neighborhood Santa recently closed its 12th year helping local children and their families have a little Christmas. They would like to thank everyone who continued to support the program and they welcome those who want to begin a relationship with them. Thanks to the continued generosity of the community, they have helped over 650 neighborhood children and their families. The invited local children plus their families received a holiday meal and gifts from two recent events: Applebee’s in Ephrata and Courtyard Café in Denver. The program makes sure the children all receive among their special requests for Santa warm blankets, clothing, coats, stuffed animals and board games. Neighborhood Santa would like to thank all of the local businesses, clubs, groups

and “private” shoppers for their kindhearted donations to the program this past year. Without the compassion of this community, named and unnamed, Neighborhood

Santa would not be able to continue the mission: “To continue being able to give Christmas and other holiday traditions to neighborhood children in need.”

Moving forward, they will start preparing for their 13th year in 2020. If you want to be a Neighbor helping a Neighbor, call 717-8082185.

*** And here’s a translation of “Little boy blue, come blow We consider this letter from St. Marys County, Maryland your horn.” to be timely indeed, for we are planning a trip to St. Marys County in the near future. Certainly one of the first families “Children two and three years old like to have their fingers Glee Bu blo, kumm bloos dei Hann: we will look up is the family which shared their Lancaster counted and have these verses repeated.” County lore with us via St. Marys County in “Marrland,” Die Kieh sin im Welschkann; as we pronounce Maryland in Dutch. Perhaps we will be Die Schoof sin im Kann. Des Is Der Daume, lucky enough to hear from other families down there in Wo is der Bu blo, des guckt noch die Schoof? Der schiddelt die Blaume, “Marrland.” So this week our (Flying Cloud) hat is off to all Newich em Schtrohschtock fescht am Schlofe. Der leest sie uff, those good Dutch families in the state of Maryland both in Der draagt sie heem, the east and in the west! “The English word ‘rye’ is called ‘Kann’ in Pennsylvania. Un der glee Schellem esst sie all leenich. June 9, 1982 Most (Dutch) Westerners call it ‘Rocke.’ The Dutch word ‘Kann’ also means a grain or seed, like a grain of wheat or Es BischliGnippli “Oft times when it rains in the summer, the boys couldn’t work outside and get into mischief.”

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

Do You Worship At Your Church? by Pastor Ricky Kurth When a Christian lady asked us this question many years ago, we knew she was really asking if our church service was characterized by the kind of emotionalism that is found in so many churches. Her

question prompted me to do a study of the word worship in Scripture, in an effort to obtain a Biblical definition of what constitutes genuine worship of Almighty God. A Worshipful Life Our study begins with God’s command to Abraham to sacrifice his only son (Gen. 22:14), and Abra ham’s announcement that he planned to “worship” God in so doing (v. 5). The law of first reference suggests that the Bible’s first use of the word worship here defines it as a willingness to obey God no matter how one’s faith is tested, a good overall definition even today. And since Abraham indicated that “the lad” was also going to worship, the willingness

of Isaac to give his life up at his father’s behest (as a young man, Isaac could have easily overpowered or out run his elderly father) suggests that when we willingly offer our lives as living sacrifices at our Father’s behest (Rom. 12:1), this too is an act of worship. We find confirmation of this when the Lord equated worshipping God with serving God in Matthew 4:10. Years later, when Abraham sent his servant to his homeland to find a bride for Isaac (Gen. 24:111), his faithful servant prayed for God’s help (vv. 1214). When he received it (vv. 15 25), he “worshipped the Lord” by thanking Him (vv.

26,27), suggesting that each time we bow to thank God for answered prayer, we too are worshipping Him. Many years later, the people of Israel “bowed their heads and worshipped” (Ex. 4:31) when they acknowledged that God was honoring His promise to visit and redeem them from Egyptian bondage (Gen. 15:13-16). This leads us to believe that it is a form of worship when we today acknowledge and thank God when He honors promises He has made to us, such as that found in Romans 8:28. Next, the Bible calls it “worship” when the people of Israel brought “the firstfruits of the land” to God (Deut. 26:10). Thus we

believe that God considers it worship when we put God first in our lives. We well remember the day we asked one of the men in our church to help us with some work on the building. This faithful man listed all of the things that he had to do that week, then paused, and said simply, “But the Lord comes first.” We believe he worshipped God that day, when he gave Him the firstfruits of his time and effort. As we come to Judges 7, Gideon “worshipped” God for the assurance He gave him that his little band of 300 would defeat the Midianites (7:9-14). Similarly, when we thank God today for all the assurances we find in God’s Word, we believe

God is thrilled with this kind of worship. Then when we consider the patriarch Job, it takes our breath away to see how he “fell down upon the ground, and worshipped” after losing all of his children and possessions (Job 1:20). Here we see worship characterized as a firm resolve to maintain one’s spiritual “integrity” (2:9) in the face of even the most horrendous ordeals of life. Add to this how David is also said to have “wor shipped” God in the aftermath of his heart wrenching loss (II Sam. 12:18-20). The worship of God at times like these is a powerful testimony to the lost that we have something they do not possess.

Contributing financially to the Lord’s work is probably not commonly thought of as worship, but the worship of the wise men is said to have included presenting the Lord with their gifts (Mt. 2:11), suggesting that giving to the Lord’s work is an example of worship that is fit for a King. We don’t always feel like worshipping God when a loved one is sick, and He does not extend to us the same “mercy” He granted Paul and Epaphroditus (Phil. 2:25-27). But when the Lord refused mercy to the Syrophenician woman, she “worshipped” Him anyway (Mt. 15:2125), and her faith and her understanding of why He was refusing to help her touched His heart (vv. 26-28). Surely God’s heart is still touched when we are able to worship Him at such difficult times, understanding that when He forbears to bestow such help, it is so that we will “rather” learn to rejoice in His all-sufficient grace, and the perfecting of His strength in our weakness (II Cor. 12:9). If your heart longs to wor ship the Lord, but you find it difficult, remember that worship always comes much easier when you find yourself in the place where God has “appointed,” just as the disciples did long ago (Mt. 28:16,17). Of course, in this dispensation, God has “appointed” that we suffer “afflictions” for the cause of Christ (I Thes. 3:3), but there is perhaps no time when our worship is more pleasing to God than when we worship Him in the face of such affliction.

Middle Creek Women’s Ministry

Births

“My Favorite Things Party,” hosted by Middle Creek Women’s Ministry will be held on Thursday evening, January 30 (snow date Friday, January 31). All women in the community are invited to attend the Women’s Ministry event on Thursday, January 30 as they share good food and exchange little gifts... these are a few of my favorite things! A “My Favorite Things” gift exchange is all about sharing. Participants bring multiple of the same item that they love, and share them with others via name drawing. The beauty of a “My Favorite Things Party” is that it draws people together. You learn some thing about what other people like, and often find out that you have things in common that you didn’t suspect. Feel free to also bring your favorite snack (and recipe) to share. Please bring up to three of the same item, with an approximate value of $7 each. You will go home with the same number of items that you brought. Please note there is no childcare. There is no cost to attend, but there will be a donation basket to help with the program costs. Middle Creek Church of the Brethren is located at 351 Middle Creek Road, Lititz. Preregister by Sunday, January 26 by contacting the church office at 717-7334222 or emailing the church at office@middlecreek church.net.

His is a common surname in England with roots in Old English, in which language it means, literally, “pile of rocks.” * A narwhal’s horn isn’t a horn; it’s a tooth -- the left front tooth, to be specific. As such, it’s considered to be a tusk, making the narwhal the world’s only animal with a tusk that’s straight rather than curved. The tusk was highly prized in the Middle Ages, fetching as much as 10 times its weight in gold for those fortunate enough to have one to sell. * A scorpion can live for an entire year without eating.

Fulton Elementary Students Recognized Veterans

Every year, Fulton Elementary School students place flags around the Dick Winters Memorial in honor of Veterans’ Day. This year students and staff took things a step further. A group of students worked with community partners Blue Ridge, Mayor Ralph Mowen and Winters

Memorial Chairperson Rebecca Gallagher to create a short Veterans’ Day video to help educate their classmates on the holiday. Additionally, a schoolwide event was held at the end of November. Veterans visited classrooms to discuss with students how being a veteran has impacted their lives and they answered the

Hogs And Heroes Foundation Treated Police Officers

DEAR DR. ROACH: Two years ago at my yearly physical, my doctor said I was low on vitamin B-12 and that the only way to increase it was through a shot in the arm. I received my first shot that day, and my arm was paralyzed for four days. I went in a week later for my second shot, only to have the same thing happen again. I didn’t get any more shots. It still hurts to this day, even though an MRI shows nothing wrong. The specialist says it was just coincidence. I cannot hold my arm over my head or stretch it out. What’s your take? -- D.R. ANSWER: Well, I don’t believe it was just coin cidence. Nerve damage following injection is

On Christmas morning members of the Hogs and Heroes Foundation delivered coffee and donuts to local police stations and the 911 call center. Knowing that the law enforcement is always keeping everyone safe, they wanted to thank them for their service on Christmas. Members of the Foundation were represented by the Regional Director, the Pennsylvania State Director and members from Chapters PA-1 and PA-2. Coffee and donuts were hand delivered to officers from East Cocalico Township Police Department, Ephrata Police Department, Akron Police Department, Northern Lan caster County Regional

Police and Manheim Borough Police Department. The treats were also brought to the County-Wide Comm

extremely rare, but it sounds like what you are describing. This can be due to direct trauma to the nerve by the needle, or by an inflammatory reaction. The treatment is physical therapy, but unfortunately for you, it works best if begun right away. I still think it is worth

your while, however. Also, vitamin B-12 deficiency absolutely can be treated with oral vitamin B-12. Although pernicious anemia, the most common form of vitamin B-12 deficiency, is due to poor B-12 absorption, this can be overcome simply by giving

much more B-12 than the body usually needs. A dose of 1 mg daily by mouth is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency. Many of my patients still want the injection, however, even though it seems inexplicable to me. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Yesterday, while walking barefoot in my back yard, I stepped on a bee. This has happened to me before, and it seems that each time the results are a little worse. After I removed the stinger from the underside of one of my toes, I put ice on the sting and took a Benadryl. Since this happened in the evening, I was able to elevate

my leg for the rest of the night. In the morning, the area was swollen, red, hot and painful. Now, after my usual three-mile morning power walk, the swelling and soreness is spreading up my foot. I am notorious for going barefoot and stepping on bees. I just know this will happen again. Do you have any suggestions for what might help prevent a bee sting from going “viral”? ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they

do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days. The reason the swelling and soreness spread after your walk is that the exercise and increased blood flow to the area allowed the venom to move to different areas, and the inflammatory response also progressed. I would recommend that you continue cold compresses and avoid your power walks for at least another day or two after a sting. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Will you write about orthostatic hypotension? I’ve been told I have this disorder. I’m a retired 86-year-old man in fairly good medical shape. I want to regain my regular activities. My regular doctor put me on labetalol. I think he is researching this a bit himself. This apparently is not a frequent problem. I have found articles about it on the internet, but the medical language is not easy to understand. -- R.T.F. ANSWER: “Orthostatic hypotension” literally means “low blood pressure on standing upright.” It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. There are many medical conditions that can lead to

the symptom of orthostatic hypotension, but many people, especially those over 65, have no discernable cause that can be found. On standing, the blood pools in our veins, and the heart and blood vessels need to rapidly adjust to prevent blood pressure from falling too much. Even a brief drop in blood pressure can lead to a sensation of lightheadedness, and to fainting if it is more severe and prolonged. Normally, blood pressure drops about five points, but the body compensates by increasing heart rate and by constricting blood vessels. As we get older, our body’s ability to adapt to rapid changes in position can diminish. Medications, especially beta blockers and antidepressants, interfere with the body’s coping mechanisms. So I am From Minor Tune-Ups to Major Repairs!

surprised that your doctor is trying labetalol, since it is both a beta and alpha blocker, and it is one of the most notorious causes of orthostatic hypotension. But it can be difficult in older people with high blood pressure to find a medicine that doesn’t make orthostatic hypotension worse. Some general advice may be of benefit. First, don’t try to get up too quickly. If lying down, sit up for a few minutes before trying to stand, to give your body time to adapt. If your doctor says it’s OK, increase salt and water intake. In your case, it might be worth finding someone, like a hypertension expert or a cardiologist, with more expertise in managing orthostatic hypotension. I assure you it is far more common than you might think.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been experiencing shortness of breath whenever I vacation and walk in the mountains. I was a smoker, but I quit 31 years ago. My doctor sent me for the lung capacity breathing test, and I passed with flying colors. The technician said my number was one of the highest she has seen. This concerns me. Why is it happening? -- N.L. ANSWER: I have two concerns. The first is that lung capacity is a measure of just what it sounds like -how big the lungs are. When the technician says it’s among the biggest she’s seen, I worry that it’s too big. An elevated lung capacity can go along with emphysema, which can be related to distant smoking or can be due to a condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin

deficiency. Emphysema can be diagnosed by other components of pulmonary function tests, particularly a test called the DLCO, and confirmed by X-ray or CT. However, breathing problems also might indicate heart problems and anemia, so you might need another visit. On the other hand, there is less oxygen in the thin mountain air, so some degree of shortness of breath might not be abnormal. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have never seen anything in your column about sebaceous hyperplasia. I read that it is quite similar to acne and that a person could use an acne treatment to keep the condition in check. Could you give your thoughts on this? -- R.G. ANSWER: Although sebaceous hyperplasia can

be mistaken for acne, sebaceous hyperplasia happens mostly to middleaged adults (or newborns). These bumps appear most commonly on the forehead and cheeks, and have an umbilicus (a small hole) in the center. They are enlargements of the oilproducing sebaceous glands. They happen particularly in people with oily skin. Treatment can be challenging. Reducing dietary fat and using a goodquality skin-care regimen for oily skin may help. Dermatologists can treat these when they are cosmetically important, not because they cause harm in themselves. Although they can be mistaken for basal cell cancers of the skin, they are not cancerous or precancerous. They are mostly treated mechanically, and by that I mean using a surgical

technique like cauterization or excision. But these techniques can leave scars. Laser and phototherapy have good cosmetic results but are expensive. Isotretoin, a systemic acne drug with significant side effects, also has been shown in a small study to be effective. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MELISSA K. PLOWMAKER, OD, PC LEANNA K. LAPE, OD

Ning Bucolo, a senior at Cocalico High School, is a diligent and committed person when it comes to recreational activities and academics. Her dedication and willfulness is spread around many rewarding activities, such as the Cocalico field hockey team, Leo club, and National Honor Society. With all of the demanding tasks she receives from these activities, she still finds the time to do what she loves: going on long runs and doing CrossFit. In the midst of these exciting events, she predominantly enjoys spending time with friends and family and making notable memories. Ning’s academic life is challenging with AP Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, AP Chemistry and many other courses occupying much of her time and effort in high school. However, taking arduous classes has benefited her in the long-term because it has helped prepare her for senior year. Moreover, her favorite class she has attempted is Anatomy and Physiology because she finds “the human body interesting,” and the class is “completely different from any other class [she] has taken”. With high school reaching its end, Ning is excited to start a new chapter in her life at the University of Pittsburg and be able to meet new people while studying what she is passionate about: the field of neuroscience. In the meantime, one thing Ning will miss most about high school is playing field hockey with her teammates, but she will least miss early mornings. An important lesson high school has taught her is that there are many high points and low points that follow, but it ultimately shapes you into the best person you can be. High school is the prologue that will prepare many students like Ning for their future life success. Nonetheless, Ning expresses that life’s trials would have been difficult without friends to help carry the burdens of life: “There are always really hard days during school and life in general, and friends truly do make a difference in lifting your spirits.” Overall, Ning has learned to never be afraid of asking for help and is a work-in-progress at being the best version of herself. Isaiah Lapp is a senior at Lititz Christian School who is a blast to be around and works hard toward what he wants. In school, Isaiah’s favorite class is Sports and Entertainment Marketing, which is applicable to his life and offers him fun with the other students and the teacher. “Spending time with my friends and my teachers is my favorite part of school.” Isaiah enjoys hanging out with friends, playing basketball, soccer, and camping, but his main passion is film and photography. He is well known for his extremely successful YouTube channel, which recently reached 100,000 subscribers - a big milestone. After graduating high school in the spring, Isaiah plans on attending One Life, which is a Christian based gap year program. Using his God given talents behind or in front of a camera, Isaiah hopes to find a profession that honors God and makes an impact in the film industry. Isaiah has a unique way to light up a room and make everyone laugh. His relatability, genuine care, fun loving attitude, and strong faith is Jesus Christ make him an amazing friend.
