Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, January 9, 2019 - 7A
Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck By: The Late C. Richard Beam A collection of “Deitsch Eck” columns from past issues of The Shopping News honoring the late C. Richard Beam.
(Originally published in the June 3, 1981 issue of The Shopping News) Das Leben Und Wandel Des In Gott Ruhenden Und Seligen Br. *** (Translation) I, poor pilgrim, was born into this miserable world in the year 1723, on the 9th of August, in the afternoon at 2 o’clock. My father’s name was Stephen Heinrich Sangmeister and my mother’s was Anna Margaretha Bergen, a native of Hornburg in Prussia. Both were of the Lutheran religion and they had such a peaceful marriage, the likes of which I have never seen. They lived in a village called Beddig, about one mile from Wolfenbuettel, where my father was a schoolmaster. This profession was in our family from our grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s time.
*** Short Supplement After I had lived in Ephrata for about one year, I experienced extraordinary strength from God in my inner self, so that I was united with my God when I was awake and asleep. Since I was often hindered from this blissful delight by others, I got a great desire to live alone in the wilderness. As I was considering this, I went walking by the creek and saw a tree hanging over the creek with a bird’s nest and young ones in it. They were very restless and constantly tried to fly (from the nest). One of them got out and fell into the water and almost would have drowned, if Brother Beno, who was present, hadn’t helped (saved it). Suddenly, a voice within me said that the same thing would happen to me if I would leave too soon on my own accord, without heavenly calling. I let my wings drop and resolved to stay in my nest. That is why I became very angry with two men who prophesied that I would not die in Ephrata, for God had called me to something better. *** From time to time, it seems to be appropriate to recall our local High German language heritage. On March 18 of this year, we printed some German verses by Peter Miller of the Ephrata Cloister in memory of the late (Rev. Dr.) John Joseph Stoudt. This week it is fitting that we call to the attention of the good Dutch folk in the 12 northern Lancaster County townships, which receive The Shopping News, a publication which came to us the very day this column is being written. We refer to the Journal Of The Historical Society Of The Cocalico Valley, Volume V. As James A. Tshudy points out in the Editor’s Forward: “This
Lung Cancer?

publication comprises the second and final part of Volume I of ‘Sangmeister’s diary’ as published by Joseph Baumann and recently translated by Barbara Schindler.” We have chosen two paragraphs from the original and the Schindler translation. The first appears very early on; the second stands very near the end. The first paragraph is especially interesting, for it gives Sangmeister’s date and place of birth and family background. This would explain his ability to express himself so well in print. The second paragraph (Kurzer Nachtrag) relates a typical incident in the life of Sangmeister and gives a good indication of his state of mind. We hope that those of our regular readers, who have been taught to read Standard German, will enjoy reading these short paragraphs. Those of you who read the dialect should find it interesting to compare an 18th century German text, which was written here in America, with the Pennsylvania German dialect as you know it. Such a comparison will bring to the fore words such as: Pilgrim (a word all of you know from English); Welt (world); geboren (for Dutch gebore); Jahr (for dialect Yaahr); lutherisch (for our dialect word luddrisch); gesehen (for gesehne); eine Meile (for en Meil); and Schulmeister (for Dutch Schuldeeschder). In the second paragraph the most interesting word to dialect speakers might well be the English loanword die Grick, which Spangmeister spells as it was and is still (by some speakers) pronounced in English (crick for creek). There is much more one could comment on from a linguistic and cultural point of view, but that would fill this page. Suffice it to say, that we owe The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley, located at 249 West Main Street, Ephrata, Pennsylvania 17522, a hearty word of thanks and congratulations on this continuing publication project. We urge all you local history buffs to show your support for the flourishing local historical society through the acquisition of each of this series of publications. (Continued On Page 15A)

THIS WEEK’S
Biblical Message
No Longer Strangers by Pastor Ricky Kurth “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God” (Eph. 2:19). These dispensationally revolutionary words no doubt eclipsed the sting of the apostle’s earlier description of
their position before God as Gentiles in time past: “Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles…that at that time ye were…strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world” (Eph. 2:11,12). Imagine the jubilation those dear Ephesian believers experienced upon learning that they had gone from being “strangers from the covenants of promise” to being “no more strangers”! Sugar Ray never had it so sweet! But here we need to point out that the Gentiles were not just strangers from God in time past, they were strangers from “the covenants of promise” that God made with Israel.
These covenants of promise differed from the conditional “if-then” type covenant that God made with Israel in the Law in that they involved unconditional promises that God made to His people with no strings attached. The Abrahamic covenant, for instance, was an unconditional covenant that God made with Abraham wherein He promised to give him the promised land “for an everlasting possession” (Gen. 17:8). Inherent in that promise of the land is the promise of eternal life, for Abraham could not possess the land forever without living forever. It is this covenant of “promise” (Rom. 4:16) that Paul says extends “to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is
of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all.” In this covenant of promise, God promised Abraham eternal life in exchange for nothing more than believing the gospel that was preached to him, just as God graciously does for us (Rom. 4:3-5). Thus it is that we partake of the spiritual blessing of eternal life that was promised to Abraham without partaking of the physical blessing of the land that was promised to him. The New Covenant was another unconditional covenant that God made with Israel (Jer. 31:31-34), a covenant to which we were once strangers but now are “no more strangers” to the “spiritual things” of this wonderful covenant of promise (Rom. 15:27) which we receive
by grace. We partake of the spiritual blessings of the new covenant without the physical blessings of this covenant, which belong to Israel, just as we partake of the spiritual blessing of eternal life that God promised Abraham without partaking of the physical blessing of the land that God promised him. We know that there are some in the grace movement who hold that we are still strangers to the New Covenant, but when Paul says that we were “strangers from the covenants of promise” in time past, but now “are no more strangers,” we have to assume that he is saying that we are no more strangers to the thing he mentioned we were strangers to just a few verses before, the covenants of promise. The
Greek word and English word for “strangers” is the same. Armed with eternal life, and equipped with the spiritual things that once pertained only to Israel (Rom. 9:4,5), and furnished with “all spiritual blessings in heavenly places” (Eph. 1:3), you are now ready to step into the ring and “fight…not as one that beateth the air” (I Cor. 9:26). If you’re not familiar with all of these blessings that God has to offer people freely by His grace, why not get in the Book that you “might know the things that are freely given to us of God” (I Cor. 2:12). Then, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8), and be ready to fight anyone who tries to put the saints under the conditional promises of the Law!

(Originally published in the June 3, 1981 issue of The Shopping News) We are very proud to point out that Barbara Schindler, mentioned above as the translator of Sangmeister’s Leben Und Wandel (Life and Behavior) is one of our former students at Millersville State College. Having looked over Miss Schindler’s shoulder several times as she was making the translation, we appreciate full well how time-consuming such a task is and the very special skills the translator must bring to the job. *** In conclusion this week, we would like to bring to the attention of our readers a calendar which lists Pennsylvania German Dialect and Related Events In Berks and Other Areas 1981, which was sent to us by: Mr. John H. Schrack, 353 Pennsylvania Avenue, Shillington, Pennsylvania 19607. If you drop Mr. Schrack a card, perhaps he will be able to send you a copy. This calendar is prepared annually by the Berks County Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Versammling for distribution at its annual dinner meeting, usually held on Easter Monday at Kutztown State College. Mr. Schrack will welcome information for his 1982 calendar. June 3, 1981 Es Bischli-Gnippli
