Board Game History And Design Come learn all about the fascinating history of Board Games and Board Game Design. On Thursday, January 14 at 6:00 p.m. the Lititz Public Library will host this virtual presentation by Game Professor, Ryan Shelley via Zoom. The first 11 participants will receive a free mini magnetic board game and one lucky winner will receive a free modern industry board game. Lancaster County’s (arguably) favorite son, Ryan spends his semesters teaching graphic design classes at Towson University outside Baltimore, Mary land. He created what turned out to be a very virus friendly Board Game Design course for Spring 2020. Program will be held via Zoom. Registration is required by emailing your name to register@ lititzlibrary.org, calling the library at 7176262255 or stopping by the community room to register. After registration a Zoom link will be sent to participants.

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

Real Meditation Author: Wenger Scripture: Philippians 4:8 - “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell (meditate) on these things.”

In a previous study we considered Philippians 4:6 7 which was a command which states: “Be anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God and the peace that passes all understanding will guard your hearts in Christ Jesus.” This week’s verse adds to that by enumerating what a believer’s thought life should be focused on. Meditating on these eight imperatives will bring peace to our minds and more importantly develop guiding attitudes that direct our actions. Attitudes and thoughts will determine our perspective

on life and will also be our motivation for everything we do. Our thought life goes even further; it actually defines who and what we are. The Bible says, “As a man thinks in his heart so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7) Let us begin with the first imperative, “whatever is true.” The Greek word is alēthḗs (“what can’t be hidden”) stresses undeniable reality when something is fully tested, i.e. it will ultimately be shown to be fact (authentic). I hate to start with the negative, but in this case it’s best to consider what truth is not. Deception, lies, halftruth, intentionally not telling the whole story, are

all opposites of truth. “He that covers his sin shall not prosper but he that confesses and forsakes it will have mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13) Deception and lies are why we have the whole court system of justice - to find the truth, what actually occurred. This world is filled with lies and deception; why, because “The whole world lies under control of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19) The evil one is the devil, he is the father of lies. Just look at the nightly news. It’s difficult to discern who is telling the truth. Most news reporting has a narrative, an agenda, and they will report in a way that supports their world

be hidden.” It’s not always discovered in the here and now, though, most of the time it is. Surely, in eternity, it will be! Wow glad that’s over! Now, let’s look at the positive side. Truth is deep, not surface only, not veneer, not particleboard, but solid wood. Truth is on a cellular level. “Behold, You (God) desires truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part, You (God) will make me know wisdom.” (Psalms 51:6) Truth can stand against the tide and stand alone. Truth is not created, relative or subjective. Truth is not different from one person to another. Truth is absolute. It exists and can be known.

view regardless of the truth. Journalism used to be about discovering and then reporting the truth. It may not happen quickly, but the truth usually comes out eventually. All deception will ultimately be exposed. The Bible says, “For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.” (Luke 8:17) It gets better than that. Luke 12:3 goes on to say, “What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roof top.” This takes us right back to our meaning of the word truth… “What can’t

Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, January 13, 2021 - 15A

“You shall know the truth (God’s word) and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32) Our Lord was filled with grace and truth. Jesus is the truth…He said; “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me.” (John 14:6) The Bible is truth, the ultimate truth. Christ’s prayer was for the truth to sanctify (set apart) the disciples. When we meditate on the word of God we are changed…transformed. Romans 12:2 says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” We are told to “Set our minds on the things above, not on the things that are on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2) Meditate on truth, God’s truth. We need to read it, study it, meditate on it and obey it. Next week we consider the other seven imperatives for real meditation.

The Fivepointville Fire Company was organized at a local school on April 29, 1957 and received a charter that June. On November 15, 1958, the department purchased the Fivepointville school house, which is at the property where the fire house is today. The first fire engine was bought from the Blue Ball Fire Company for $700. It was a 1936 Mack Junior pumper with a 475-gallon tank that was purchased by Paul H Weinhold, one of the founding members of the Fivepointville Fire Company. Today, under the leadership of Fire Chief Nelson Shirk (shown in the bottom left photo), the Fivepointville Fire Company provides first due emergency services to the western half of Brecknock Township, and provides mutual aid assistance to their neighboring departments as needed. They currently operate with four units — Engine/Tanker 32, Engine 32-1, Support Squad 32-1 and a Fire Police Squad 32-2 — and 30 active members, averaging around 120 calls per year. The members participate in weekly trainings that include search & rescue, fire attack, SCBA, CPR/AED, vehicle rescue, water supply, Haz-Mat and many others. Shown in the top right photo, from left to right, are members: (front row) Steven Weaver, Kyle Hollinger, Manny Martin, Captain Walter Brallier, Deputy Chief Jared Artus and Fire Police Captain Merle Weaver; (middle row) Dustin Zimmerman, Justina Martin, Justin Stoltzfus, Chief Nelson Shirk, Justin Martin, Kelvin Good and John David Martin; (back row) Lieutenant Marlin Sauder, Eugene Sauder, Josh Weaver, Ethan Stoltzfus and Assistant Chief and Training Officer Rodney Good. To raise funds each year, the Fire Company holds an annual letter fund drive, consignment auction (Mud Sale), breakfast buffets, a chicken pot pie dinner, and a cheesesteak/sausage sandwich sale. However, many of these events were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19. If you would like to make a donation to the Fivepointville Fire Company, it can be mailed to 1087 Dry Tavern Road, Denver, PA 17517, or you may call 717-445-4933 for more information. In addition to monetary donations, the Fire Company is always in need of volunteers and active members. You don’t need to be a firefighter to help your community. Community members can help with fundraiser events, administration and maintenance. Also, in the daytime hours when staffing is especially low, drivers, firefighters and fire police are in great need. Visit The Shopping News of Lancaster County on Facebook to see more photos of the Fivepointville Fire Company.

We also advertise our annual Anniversary sale in The Shopping News because we realize our customer base reads the publication regularly, and advertising the sale in The Shopping News is a great way to let our customers know the details of each yearly sale event.” Keep an eye out for the Akron Nutrition Center’s money saving coupon in the January coupon pages in this week’s issue of The Shopping pp g News. The Akron Nutrition Center is located at 22 North 7th Street in Akron. You can reach them at 717-859-4901 or through their website, www. akronnutritioncenter.com. Brownstown Boy Scouts Of America Adventuring In 2020 COVID-19 put a lot of fun on hold but Brownstown’s Boy Scouts of America Pack 82, Troop 82, and Crew 82 kept adventuring in 2020. When the world quarantined the Cubs, Scouts and Venturers transitioned to online meetings, backyard campouts and family cooking challenges, trivia contests and internet-based gaming for their members. Once Lancaster County went into the Green Zone leaders held an Arrow of Light ceremony for seven Cubs and Courts of Honor for twenty Scouts and twelve Venturers. A COVID safety policy waiver for events, which aligned with the state guidelines, CDC recommen dations, and permission from the sponsoring West Earl Lions Club, was adopted by the three units to allow them to coordinate face-to-face activities this summer and fall. An Emergency Preparation Merit Badge program was led by Troop 82’s Assistant Scoutmasters and in December Scouts performed a Conestoga River rescue drill using a two hundred pound safety dummy pro vided by Robson Forensics of Brownstown. Young women aged 11 to 17 extracted the body form and practiced a number of emergency scenarios in cluding communication to a dispatch source, blanket carry, and first aid administration. Pack 82 visited the West

Earl Police and had a chance to experience Cardio pul monary Resuscitation (mimicking the air portion) on training mannequins. The Cubs also participated in

their annual fall West Earl Lions Club Park campout, held a Flag Retirement Ceremony and Flag Etiquette training. Troop 82’s Scouts

organized five separate campouts in the summer and Venture Crew 82 navigated a 50-mile canoe trip including island camping on the Susquehanna River. Brownstown’s Cubs and Scouts helped collect over ten thousand pounds of food for pantries during the Scouting for Food drive. Scouts are also working on an in-home birdhouse building project and supporting the third Eagle Scout Service project benefiting a day care center in Lancaster. Despite COVID restrict ions, Troop 82 camped twenty nights together in 2020, completed dozens of merit badges, provided swimming lessons for the newest Scouts, and are ready to usher in three members into the Inaugural Class of From Minor Tune-Ups to Major Repairs!

Female Eagle Scouts of the BSA. Presently the Troop operates via Zoom meetings, practicing their skills at home but look forward to outdoor Klondike camping next month. With the challenges of facilities use Pack 82 worked with chartering organization West Earl Lions to secure new facilities in the local area to continue to meet together while complying the CDC and PA DOH regulations. One great example of this effort was the use of the West Earl Township Municipal Build (Continued On Page 11B)

a big mess for someone else (payback is not kind).” -– A.M. in Kentucky * If your vacuum has a paper filter, spray it with your favorite perfume or essential oil. It will blow into the air as you vacuum, leaving behind a pleasant scent. * Using your fireplace? Try adding citrus peels to the logs for a nice aroma. They can be a good starter material as well. ing for a brief time. Their kindness and opening of their doors to the Cubs really showed the spirit of community. West Earl Town ship Lions Park (Talmage Park) is home to their in-person meetings, and the boys and girls are glad to be back. A Skiing day trip, Klondike sled-building party, Scout Sunday and a winter camping training series is keeping the Troop buzzing, and the Pinewood Derby is in the sights for the Pack. Troop 83 will be returning to Hidden Valley Scout Reser vation in mid-July for summer camp. Venture Crew 82 is planning a weeklong trip of high adventure in June, and Scouts are also turning their eyes to the next National Scout Jamboree in 2023, and the Inter-American Scout Jamboree Camporee at Summit Bechtel Center in 2024. If you would like to be a part of these Scouting groups, the Cubs open their doors for boys and girls Kindergarten through fifth grade. The girls Troop accepts members aged 11 to 17 and boys are welcome in Leola’s Troop 83. Venture Crew 82 is seeking high adventure enthusiasts and role play gaming young men and women ages 14 to 20, and they are always taking in merit badge counselors and presenters for these motivated Scouts! For more information email Erin Blank at Scoutmaster@BSA82.org. Come join them as they Scout on!

The first words that come to mind when you think of this person are comical, godly, and outspoken. For Josh Garman, a senior of Cocalico High School’s class of 20202021, senior year has not been the best, as it has not for most seniors during the widespread pandemic. Garman expresses that whenever he tries to adjust to the world, things are always changing, and oftentimes without the consent of others. This is why Josh finds it important to voice his own opinions and to be heard because of the effect it has to initiate change. One lesson high school has taught Josh is to not be afraid of what others will think. He says, “We like to hide our opinions and beliefs because we think others will laugh at us. It’s true, people will laugh at you for the things you believe, but that isn’t a reason to hide them. The people that laugh aren’t who you should care about; you should care about those that talk to you. Those people are the ones that actually care about your beliefs.” More importantly, if Josh could change anything in the world, he would expose the truth because he believes the truth often gets hidden, especially under politics. After Josh graduates, he plans to take a gap year and work as an electrician. Garman is not sure what he wants to major in, so he hopes that working will help him save money and give him more time to think about his future. Aside from school, he loves to travel and explore new places. He is also active in his church, Metzler Mennonite, and is a student leader in his youth group. Some of his hobbies include longboarding, hiking, and having fun with his friends by doing silly things. For instance, wandering around Walmart and rolling around in a mud pit. Aside from his lively personality, Josh aspires to be a godly man. He believes the world needs men who do the right thing, stand firm for truth, and respect women. “I’m flying by the seat of my pants. I really don’t know what I’m going to do Written by: with my life, but I’m not afraid to go with Melody Pha the flow and see where I end up.”

Cadwalader Lititz Christian School

Evie Cadwalader Senior

Evie Cadwalader is a senior at Lititz Christian School. When talking about Evie, one would describe her as kindhearted, funny, and thoughtful. Evie is passionate, a hard worker, and she never gives up. She is the valedictorian of her class. Evie is extremely smart, and always works hard to achieve her goal of going to college and becoming an aeronautical engineer. Evie’s favorite part about school are her friends, and the close relationships she is able to build there. She enjoys and works hard in volleyball as well. Last season, she helped lead her team to their second consecutive district championship, and even earned herself a spot on the alldistrict team. When Evie isn’t studying or playing volleyball, you’ll probably find her long boarding or hanging out with friends. Evie credits her determination to succeed and her work ethic to her mom, which is who Evie admires the most. Written by: Daniel Evie is a hard working, genuine, and Coomer smart student at Lititz Christian School.
