Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Lancaster County finally got its first snow of the season. It was absolutely beautiful the way the snow clung to the trees, which provided some great scenic views, and the low accumulation of snow made for easier sidewalk cleanup. However, due to the dramatic temperature changes, some of the icy roads proved to be a challenge for many. This lovely image features the Old Mill in Brownstown as evening begins to settle in and the wet road reflects this shimmering winter scene.

Ephrata Library Receives Generous Donation From Bank The Ephrata Public Library accepted a $5,000 donation from Ephrata National Bank (ENB) on Wednesday, December 18, marking a major milestone in the Library’s Annual Fund Drive. “Having a strong local partner like ENB makes all the difference in running a busy library like ours,” said Will Caverly, Director of Development. “We’re happy to have partnered with Ephrata National year after year. The bank’s gift is a show of support for the Northern Lancaster community.” The Library’s Annual Fund Drive raises critical money for operations and to date has included over 260 individual donors. Institutional donors like ENB make up a large percentage of the total dollars raised each year. Government funding covers only onethird of the Library budget, with the rest raised from various sources. For its part, Ephrata National Bank sees their investment in the Library as part of their philanthropic efforts. Direct giving, like the gift to the Library, gives

in a position to support their Annual Fund Drive. The vital services and programing offered at the library align with our commitment to serving the greater Ephrata

local charities the funds they need to complete their mission. “We value our longstanding partnership with the Ephrata Public Library and are grateful to be

area community. ” In the past year, the Library has seen multiple successes, such as the 2019 Summer Reading Program, which counted more than five thousand participants. Over fifteen thousand people participated in public programs at the Library, from the children attending weekly Story Time classes to adults investing

in themselves through continuing education. Shown in the photo, from left to right, are Jeffrey Stauffer, President and CEO of Ephrata National Bank; Will Caverly, Director of Development at the Ephrata Public Library; and Aaron Groff, former President and CEO of Ephrata National Bank.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My mixed-breed puppy “Max” is very playful — until I put a leash on him. Then it’s a battle to get him to walk with me. He will sit down and not move. All I can do is pick him up and carry him, but he’s getting bigger. What can I do? — Phil in Alexandria, Virginia DEAR PHIL: Max has formed a negative association with the leash. It’s not your fault, but for some reason Max just does not see the leash as a good time. And since dogs are all about having a good time, he’s resisting. The thing to do here is build a positive association with the leash. Here’s one method, courtesy of the AKC: Teach him a “cue” — Fill your pocket with small treats (you can even cut them smaller to reduce calories) and spend one or two indoor training sessions teaching Max a special cue, like “yes,” clicking your tongue, or using a clicker. Each time you cue, toss him a treat. Do this until he responds enthusiastically to the cue even without a treat. Reintroduce his leash — Have him wear the collar and leash in supervised sessions around the house; don’t hold the leash, just let him wear it. Be supportive during the process. Reinforce the “come” command — While he’s on the leash, go across the room and call him. Give a treat (with the cue) when he obeys. Rinse and repeat. Hold the leash — Now, just hold the leash while you give basic commands. Follow with the cue and treat. Begin and end with lots of praise. Take it outside — Start with Max on the leash, training basic commands along with the cue and treat. Once he comes to you, give lots of praise. Work up to the “heel” command, and gradually extend your walks together. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Community Partners Come Together To “Bundle Up” Kids Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Great things happen when the business community and the nonprofit sector come together for a worthwhile cause. “Blue Ridge and the Northern Lancaster Hub have gone above and beyond to provide new coats for those that cannot afford them on their own. Comm unities coming together to help struggling families is exactly what the Christmas Spirit should be all about,” remarked State Repre sentative Dave Zimmerman. During the month of November, Blue Ridge Communications (BRC) launched a special promotion that helped make the new coat distribution possible. “We are thrilled to be working with Blue Ridge to get warm coats into the hands of children who don’t have them.” stated Kelly Ernst Warner, Northern Lancaster Hub Coordinator. It was truly a collaborative team effort among many community partners that made this donation and day possible. The coordination and logistics to make this happen were critical and thankfully, in addition to the many Blue Ridge employees that volunteered to assist there were also repre sentatives from The North ern Lancaster Hub and partnering agencies like Ephrata Power Packs Project to lend a helping hand. “We can always count on Blue Ridge and once again they satisfied a tremendous need in the Ephrata community! This is our second year working with the wonderful

Simmered Steaks

people at Blue Ridge, and we are so grateful for all that they continue to do for our families! “ said Stephanie Weber, Program Director Ephrata Power Packs Project. “I am very proud of how our organization supports the communities we serve throughout the year and our “Bundle Up” campaign is always a highlight for me personally.” said Mark Masenheimer, Vice Presi dent of Operations for Blue Ridge. “This is a “winwin” scenario; our customers saved money by “bundling” their services with us and by partnering with The Northern Lancaster Hub, we delivered new winter coats for hundreds of children just in time for winter. Seeing the excitement of the children when they put on their new coat and the relief and gratefulness on the faces of

the parents makes it all worthwhile. Knowing that we helped create that moment is pretty special. I would like to thank all of our customers and employees that “bundled up” and made this day possible.” said Masenheimer. Shown in the photo, from left to right, are (front row): Joe Lerman (BRC), Penny Talbert (Executive Director Ephrata Public Library), Priscilla Eberly (Chief of Staff/State Rep. David Zimmerman), Marie Cofre (BRC Ephrata Team Lead), Santa Claus (Jeff Adams), Mrs. Claus (Liz Ackerman, Executive Director Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce), Joy Ashley (Executive Director Ephrata Area Social Services), Jeff Carvell (BRC); (second row) Alicia Hughart (BRC), Kirstin Sutton (BRC), Stephanie Weber (Executive

You may have doubts when you start stirring orange marmalade into the sauce, but trust us, it all works out perfectly in the end. 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 4 (4-ounce) lean minute or cube steaks 1 cup unsweetened orange juice 1 cup (two 2.5-ounce jars) sliced mushrooms, drained 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium ketchup 2 tablespoons orange marmalade spreadable fruit 1 tablespoon dried onion flakes 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1. Place flour in a shallow dish and coat steaks on both sides in flour. Reserve any leftover flour. Evenly arrange coated steaks in a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray and brown for about 3 minutes on each side. 2. In a medium bowl, combine orange juice, mushrooms, ketchup, spreadable fruit, onion flakes, parsley flakes and any remaining flour. Spoon sauce mixture evenly over steaks. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until steaks are tender. 3. When serving, evenly spoon sauce mixture over top of steaks. Serves 4. Say You Saw It In “The Shopping News” - Wednesday, January 15, 2020 - 9A

And I thought that she was so very nice. Ma told Pa to take me for a walk And give me some fatherly advice.

Pa lifted us on his shoulders so we could see The clowns and all it was better than the zoo.

Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck

The big brass Band and booming Drum, The loud music that they made, Pa kept us on his shoulder still, So we could see the big parade.

By: The Late C. Richard Beam A collection of “Deitsch Eck” columns from past issues of The Shopping News honoring the late C. Richard Beam.

(Originally published in the June 16, 1982 issue of The Shopping News) PA! By Paul B. Horning On Sunday, May 9, we gave honor to And sang the praises of Ma. Now, a little later on, it behooves us To say something good about Pa.

So we grew big, had families of our own, And Pa was old, took sick one night, Didn’t last long; Ma called us on the phone And said, “Your kind and loving Pa has died.”

Then coming home on the crowded Trolley We thought it was mighty neat That Pa stood up in the aisle So that Ma could have a seat.

We all grieved so much and cried, Our oldest Son, just turned eleven, Wiped his eyes, look at me and said, “Don’t weep no more, Grandpa has gone to Heaven.”

When later on to School we’d go And the rain came down, filled every street With water puddles; Pa came by after School And carried us home so we wouldn’t get wet feet.

Ich lieb sie.’” (A few people from the Ephrata section visited me recently. They read The Shopping News but can hardly read the Pennsylvania Dutch. (Continued On Page 10A)

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

Do You Worship At Your Church? By Pastor Ricky Kurth A Worshipful Church Service While we have looked at several ways to worship the Lord, we began by asking if the church service at a grace church is characterized by worship, and the answer to

this is a resounding yes! To begin with, when Joshua is said to have worshipped the Lord, he asked, “What saith my lord unto His servant?” (Joshua 5:14). This worship ful attitude of seeking the words of God is the same mindset we display every time we gather in a grace church to hear God’s Word taught, for it is only when the Word is rightly divided that we hear the Lord’s words to His servants today. Then too, remember how the Lord said of the Pharisees, “in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Mt. 15:9)? Well, if teaching the commandments of men constitutes vain worship, then teaching the

commandments of God must be considered true worship! And only grace churches are emphasizing the command ments of God given to us through Paul (I Cor. 14:37; I Thes. 4:2). This does not mean, of course, that we throw away the law and the prophets, for even Paul himself professed that his “worship” included “believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets” (Acts 24:14). Here we see that we worship God when we go to church and simply believe His Word, His entire Word. Of course, it is only when we recognize dispensational differences and changes that we “worship God in the spirit” (Phil. 3:3).

And so if others have caused you to feel that you don’t worship at your grace church, we trust these thoughts from God’s Word have helped you to see that, as a grace believer, you worship God in ways that are far more pleasing to Him than those who attend services characterized by mere shallow emotionalism. We feel certain that if Jeremiah were to visit some of these churches, he would post a sign above the door that read: “Hear the word of the Lord, all ye…that enter in at these gates to worship” (Jer. 7:2). Hearing the word of the Lord is the highest form of worship, for when we recognize just who it is that is speaking to us through

the Scriptures, we see that this too is a form of worship (cf. John 9:3538). A Worshipful Future Finally, once we draw our last breath and enter His presence, we can look forward to worshipping the Lord in a very unique way. Consider how the people of Israel “worshipped” the Lord after they saw how He accepted their sacrifice (II Chron. 7:13). Then think of what a thrill it will be when we stand someday at the Judgment Seat of Christ and see Him accept every sacrifice we have ever made for Him, and reward us accordingly. It will be our highest honor and deepest privilege to worship Him in that day.

In closing, we would be remiss in this brief study of Biblical worship if we did not call your attention to Isaiah 66:23,24, where we read that in the kingdom of heaven on earth, they will “worship” God by going forth on a regular basis, as God says, to “look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against Me.” The prophet speaks here of souls in Hell, where “their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched.” At the present time, of course, our hearts break at the thought of friends and loved ones suffering eternal torment. But once we reach the eternal state, our minds will be so much like His that we

Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” That quote is one of Emma Musser’s favorites. Emma is blessed with two loving parents, Jeff and Mary Musser, who are always by her side. She has a cool big bro and a sweet little dog. She attends Bowmansville Mennonite Church every Sunday and Hinkletown Mennonite School every weekday. She will be staying at HMS for the Venture Program in high school because she thinks it will be good for her. She has plenty of hobbies that will keep her occupied through the school year. They are the ukulele, volleyball, and one that leads to her dream, cooking. Emma’s dream is to be a jolly chef. Her mom likes helping her succeed at that dream by handing over supper duty to her for some nights. Emma enjoys that duty because she likes making regular food better than desserts. Her family loves whatever she bakes. They really love it when she makes a dessert to go with it since her desserts make everyone’s mouth water for a whole week! Emma has a dream that she will definitely succeed. Emma’s dream is to be a chef, but not a fancy one. She would not want all that pressure on her. Instead, she would much rather work for a little corner cafe in the city. She would make a lot of food and desserts that would be better than any other cafe. She would talk to all her customers and make them all feel welcomed with her smile. Emma is a great person and an awesome friend. If someone feels down and needs encouragement, all they need to do is talk to Emma. Her smile will brighten your day, but her cooking can brighten your year. Written by: Valerie Martin

FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL YEAR!!

Sophomore

Ladies and gentlemen, the spotlight in this article shines on an archer in his tree stand, ready to eliminate the buck in his bow sights. Aside from being a skilled hunter, Hans Burkholder enjoys other outdoor activities, including fishing, trapping, and hiking. Hans is a member at Martindale Mennonite Church, a member of the Heidelberg Sportsman’s Association, and a sophomore at Ephrata Mennonite School. His favorite subject in school is physics because it studies daily activities and explains them mathematically. He says, “It is the intermediate link between school and the majority of the rest of my life that I’ve never known before.” When asked what he likes most about school, Hans says, “The thing that I like most about school is the interaction that it gives me with my fellow classmates as well as teachers.” After he graduates from high school, Hans plans to find “a field of work where interaction with those around him is crucial for success in that field, like a sales representative, shortterm missionary, etc.” We all like to think about something we would change in the world if we had the opportunity, right? Hans says that he would like to make the Bible accessible in every language in the world because only 10% have copies in their language. Hans feels that his greatest accomplishments to date are participating in street evangelism in NYC and playing several musical instruments. If Hans had to choose one person that he admires most in his life, it would be his dad. “He has constantly shown me grace as I learn to become a man. From watching patiently and walking me through the steps of gutting my first deer to explaining to me why we believe what we believe on countless world issues, he has always been there for me. That is why I admire him the most.” Written by: Alia Summy
