Through the years Darla worked at clerical and secretarial positions for several local businesses. But her favorite job was raising and caring for their children and making a home for their family. Additional blessings include five grandchildren: Nathan and Ellie Quirk, and Drew, Lucy and Reid Wenger. Welcome to a new year.

ere we are in a brand new year. We all know of others who have not come this far. For them time has ceased to have any meaning. Some wise person once said that time is only a hyphen in eternity. Weeks, months, years and centuries are not relative to the endless scope of forever. Someday, sooner than many of us might expect, time will no longer be a factor in our existence. We are going to pass into eternity; and once there, a year or ten million years will all be the same. Do you know where your soul will be 100 years from now? Wherever it is, it will be there forever. Jesus Christ came to this world, died a bloody death and walked out of His grave so that we might have a way to spend our eternity in heaven. God invites you to put your trust in Christ - to call on Him to be your personal Savior. Answering that invitation positively is the smartest thing any human heart can do.

Do You Know…?

Bluegrass Gospel Music

On Saturday, February 2, Farm Country Shindig will present an evening of Bluegrass Gospel Music featuring Summit Hill and Canaan’s Land Bluegrass at the Reinholds Fire Company Banquet Hall, located along Route 897 at 138 West Main Street, Reinholds. Summit Hill is a group of multi-talented experienced bluegrass musicians/singers. Each band member has an average of over 20 years working with various bluegrass bands. Ron McVey (from Strasburg) plays the old time bluegrass fiddle and sings some lead. He is following in the footsteps of his late grandfather. Ron loves to entertain and make people laugh and forget their troubles. Tim Kilby (from Quarryville) sings baritone and plays guitar. He also plays dobro, bass fiddle and sings lead and bass. Tim appeared with High Ridge Mountain Boys and Stone Mountain Bluegrass. Keith Kupp (from Adamstown) plays banjo and sings tenor. Translation A good friend, Dr. Henry Snyder Gehman, has passed on. He was buried at Bergstrasse, one of the most beautiful graveyards in the countryside and also one of the oldest. From Bergstrasse you can see far over the lovely Conestoga Valley - and to the old homestead, south of the Ephrata Mountain, where Henry S. Gehman grew up. (Continued On Page 2B)

Neighborhood Santa Thanks Community Thanks to the continued generosity of private shop pers, monetary donators and the kindhearted donations from local businesses this past Christmas, Neighbor hood Santa was able to help over 500 neighborhood kids and their families. The invited local children, plus their families, received a holiday meal and gifts from two events held at Applebee’s in Ephrata and Courtyard Café in Denver. Kids received warm blank ets, clothing, coats, stuffed animals and board games. Neighborhood Santa would also like to thank their own personal friends and family who generously give up time to help the local children to have a wonderful holiday season. Without the compassion of this community, named and unnamed, Neighborhood Santa would not be able to continue their mission: “To

continue being able to give Christmas and other holiday traditions to neighborhood children in need.” As the program moves forward preparing for their

12th year, they are always looking for people to help Neighborhood Santa. If you are interested or would like more information, please call 717-808-2185.

Shown in the photo, along with Ephrata Mayor Ralph Mowen and Denver Mayor Rod Redcay, are all the people who made this years’ Neightborhood Santa a success.

THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

Determining What Is Acceptable to God by Pastor Paul M. Sadler “Living the Christian life can be challenging at times. How do we determine what is acceptable to God when there is no direct command of Christ?”

The Word of God is always relevant — it transcends the ages! If a particular matter isn’t dealt with specifically in Paul’s writings, we are to defer to a broader principle. For example, you may want to ask yourself the question, will my action or participation in something glorify God? If you have any reservations whatsoever, you are probably skating on thin ice. Paul says, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (I Cor. 10:31). Another principle to apply is to “prove all things; hold fast that which

is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil” (I Thes. 5:21,22). Proving has the sense of putting things to a test. If you are remodeling an old house and the steps going upstairs look unsafe, you naturally make sure that the steps will hold your weight before you attempt to ascend the stairs. We wouldn’t think of placing ourselves in harm’s way — the same should also be true of our spiritual life. Test: Should we take possession of something that is not rightfully ours? To illustrate, what would you do if you came across a satchel of money sitting beside a park bench? Often, examining the conduct of

a servant of God in such matters will help determine whether our actions will be acceptable to the Lord. When the Apostle Paul won Onesimus to Christ at Rome he could have reasoned that since this runaway slave’s slate was wiped clean from past offenses he would claim him as his own. After all, think how profitable Onesimus could have been to Paul in the work of the ministry. But Onesimus rightfully belonged to Philemon, so the aged apostle returned him, along with a letter, to allow his coworker in the faith to make that decision. In other words, he didn’t simply

assume his friend would understand, he did what was right. The Lord will handsomely reward Paul for his good deed at the

Judgment Seat of Christ. What would you do if you found yourself in a similar set of circumstances?

• On January 18, 1882, A.A. Milne, creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, is born in England. In 1920, his only son, Christopher Robin, was born. In 1925, the family bought Cotchford Farm in Sussex. A nearby forest inspired the 100-Acre Wood where Winnie-the-Pooh’s adventures would be set. “Winnie-the-Pooh” was published in 1926. • On January 17, 1916, professional and leading amateur golfers gather in New York City in a meeting that will result in the founding of the Professional Golfers Association. The first annual PGA Championship took place in October. James “Long Jim” Barnes defeated Jock Hutchinson, taking home a silver trophy and $500. • On January 14, 1943, during World War II, Franklin Roosevelt becomes the first president to travel on official business by airplane. The secret and circuitous journey across the Atlantic began January 11. • On January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy is inaugurated as the 35th president of the United States. At age 43, Kennedy was the

youngest candidate ever elected to the presidency and the first Catholic president. • On January 15, 1972, Don McLean’s “American Pie” hits No. 1 on the Billboard charts. The song references the 1959 plane crash that killed famous stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “the Big Bopper” Richardson. • On January 16, 1991, President George H.W. Bush waits to see if Iraq will withdraw from Kuwait by a midnight deadline mandated by the United Nations, or if war will ensue. Just after midnight in the U.S. on January 17, Bush gave the order for U.S. troops to lead an attack on Saddam Hussein’s army. • On January 19, 2007, Beijing, China, gets its first drive-through McDonald’s restaurant. Junior Achievement Lessons At Denver Elementary

Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese Ninety Denver Elementary School fifth grade students had an introduction to personal finance and career readiness through Junior Achievement of South Central PA’s JA Our Nation program. JA Our Nation introduces fifth grade students to the intersection of work readiness and upper elementary grades social studies learning objectives. Through hands-on classroom activities, the program provides students with practical information about the nation’s free market system and how it serves as an economic engine for businesses and careers. The curriculum also introduces the need for entrepreneurial and innovative thinking to meet the requirements of high-growth, high-demand careers and the concept of globalization in business. Shown is a festively dressed Chris Wilson as he teaches valuable lessons to Briella Wilson, Joshua Barrows, William Hibshman and Fiona Chisholm.

done for this neighborhood: Take Henry’s uncle, Henry E. Gehman; he was the first principal of the Ephrata High School. And Martha Gehman, who lives on Park Avenue in Ephrata, and Gehman the jeweler (both of whom were at the funeral), and others, but that must do for this time. Edwin G. Es Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch Eck By: The Late C. Richard Beam A collection of “Deitsch Eck” columns from past issues of The Shopping News honoring the late C. Richard Beam. (Continued From Page 7A)

(Originally published in the June 10, 1981 issue of The Shopping News) In my life I never spoke with anyone who was more learned than Henry. He saw much of the world. He was able to speak about a dozen languages; yet he never lost his love for his first language, Pennsylvania Dutch. Last year in the October 29th issue of The Shopping News I wrote about Henry Gehman in the Dutch Eck. As he lay in the coffin at the funeral, he had the same familiar friendly expression. With all his great learning he remained a common, friendly person. About five years ago we visited at my brother Abel’s place. Henry and his wife, Bertha Lausch Gehman, were also there, near Bergstrasse. Henry liked to speak about Gehman’s Valley, my old home, and his greatgrandparents’ home. His great-grandparents were Christian Gehman and his wife Barbara Kurtz Gehman. Henry had often visited that place. His cousin, Lizzie Gehman Fry, also had lived there. Christian was also a preacher and Henry had the old Bible, which his great-grandfather had used. Ephrata can be proud of what the Gehman folk have

We are again indebted to “Der Weiss Kopp” (the white head) for sharing with our ECK readers his recollections of the funeral service held at the Bergstrasse Lutheran Church for our mentor, Professor Henry S. Gehman, who for many years was the William Henry Green Professor of Old Testament Literature and Chairman of the Department of Biblical Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary. He would have been 93 on June 1, 1981. “Der Weiss Kopp” appended the following note, which many of our readers will find of interest: “I copied from the Gehman book what my aunt Anna Gehman wrote about preacher Christian Gehman, the greatgrandfather of Dr. Henry S. Gehman. ‘Christian Gehman was ordained to the ministry of the gospel in 1817. He was a wheelwright by trade and had a very limited education. After his ordination he placed his Bible on his workbench and studied while he worked. Soon he became an able minister, preaching the Word with power. Barbara Gehman was the mother of 13 children, 62 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. They are buried at Gehman’s Mennonite graveyard.’ ‘The following was written on the flyleaf of Christian Gehman’s Bible, which his great-grandson, Henry Snyder Gehman of Princeton, New Jersey now has. The spelling is the original.’

Henry Snyder Gehman has completed his course. He has returned to the beloved soil of his ancestors. His creator had bestowed many talents upon him. He developed them to the fullest and shared them with the world. As Ed Weber has reminded us, Henry’s scholarship and humility were borne with equal grace. He mastered many languages ancient and modern, but he was never ashamed of his MUDDERSCHPROOCH. Might we not emulate his example? Our hearts reach out to Bertha Lausch Gehman, his wife of 64 years; Mary S. Miller, his sister; H. Nevin H. Gehman, his son; and the seven grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. June 10, 1981 Es bedriebt Bischli-Gnippli

to “tell a grown-up at home and at school” whenever a student encounters a problem that makes them feel unsafe or afraid. Officer Moore reminded students that their school community is safest when students treat others with kindness and respect on the bus, in the cafeteria, on the playground, in the classroom, in the hallways, and in the bathroom. He encouraged students to continue to show respect, responsibility, safety, and readiness for learning everywhere they go! Each classroom teacher selected up to two students for the quarterly awards.

Dom and Mark Burd. During a recent assembly students received “Mighty Mount Awards” for being great role models, active learners, and for following Clay’s school rules: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Ready to Learn. Their special guest speaker, Officer Paul Moore of the Ephrata Police Department, spoke to students about the importance of showing kindness, The only way to have a listening, and working friend is to be one. hard to learn as important ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson components of safety at school. 8th Grade Kathryn Zimmerman is a creative eighth grader who attends school at Hinkletown Mennonite School. She lives with her parents, Lorin and Wendy, as well as her siblings, Austin and Emily. They all attend Millport Mennonite Church. Kathryn enjoys going to the beach with her family, swimming, and soccer. No matter what she is doing, she has many creative ideas. There are a variety of ways Kathryn enjoys being creative. She is very good at art and enjoys drawing sceneries and portraits. She also enjoys other types of art, such as cake decorating. In whatever type of art she is doing, she finds ways to be very creative. In seventh grade art class, Kathryn and her friends made a boat out of trash, including people on the deck doing activities, flags on the roof, and even a water skier. She also enjoys cooking and finding ways to be creative in the kitchen, as well as planting succulents and other flowers in interesting patterns. She enjoys playing soccer where she might just use some creative plays. Kathryn’s creativity will aid in her future dreams of becoming an interior designer. Interior designers need to be extra creative to get every last detail correct. She already has some experience because she helped her parents redesign her room. She has also been part of the yearbook team at school and helped to design it. Kathryn will be a very good interior designer, and her creativity will aid her in the future.

Ephrata Mennonite Dawn Cassel Senior If you were to ask Dawn what her favorite part about school is, she would probably say, “I just want to graduate!” She is very excited to graduate, but besides that she enjoys the service learning program at EMS where she can help elementary teachers by grading papers and tutoring students. She likes being able to interact with the younger kids and help the teachers out while doing that. Dawn Cassel is 18 years old and comes from a family of seven. She has three brothers and one sister and is the middle child. Outside of school Dawn enjoys reading. Her favorite books to read are inspirational fiction, and her favorite authors are Janette Oke and Robin Jones Gunn. She also enjoys hand stitching and spending time with family. Her family takes trips to the cabin that she really enjoys. Dawn is currently working at Martin’s Quality Eggs and plans to continue working there after she graduates. If Dawn could travel anywhere in the world, she would travel to Europe. She doesn’t have a specific place or country she wants to visit. She would love to travel around all of Europe because of its breathtaking scenery. As Dawn graduates this year, she will be remembered by her sarcastic yet caring personality that has helped make class and life at school interesting. Written by: Alexa Burkholder
