SPECIAL CONTEST on February 14th!

On Saturday, January 27, the annual “Touch a Heart” event will be held at Ephrata’s non-profit community art center, Art of Recycle, located at 27 Cloister Avenue, Ephrata. Community members can spend a fantastic afternoon glittering, gluing, coloring and crafting Valentine’s cards. Make a card for a veteran, a senior in a nursing home, for a patient in the hospital or to say thank you to a doctor, nurse, caregiver, or for the

many “making a difference” in the community. It is a day to celebrate and create a handmade, personal message of love to share with your friends and family and to share with people who might not otherwise receive a Valentine card. This Valentine Card Making Workshop is a family-oriented, free event. All of the materials and tools needed to make your special Valentines are provided by Art of Recycle. These cards will serve as powerful

messages of joy and hope to the men and women serving around the world, veterans and the elderly, as they are so appreciative of the outpouring of kindness. If you unable to make the event, and would still like to make a card, children may trace their hands on the card, and then decorate it any way they wish, adding their name and a personal message. However, all ages are welcome to make a card. A decorated “drop” box is located in the Blue

My parents’ home will be Completely torn apart. Oh, how can I bear What we have to see? For 50 years in this house All the furnishings were here And made a home so pleasant For my family then. In every piece from that house I see my gracious parents. Now strangers will get these things If I could just keep these things, I would. I wish I could buy all these things Just for myself. But if I did, my small house Would be too full to move about it.

That dropleaf table that stood In the kitchen for years. It was always full of good food When we were youngsters. Now it will be sold like everything else, And, oh, it hurts me so! There goes the old high chair too With one broken leg. My mother’s pretty patchwork quilts, They are stitched so fine. This would be hard for my mother If she had to see it! The wooden tub goes next; We rinsed clothes in it. It’s bought by an old uppity woman To plant flowers in. There goes the heart of the kitchen Mother’s old stove!

Grand Opening Of Vintage View Antiques In Denver Set to open on Friday, January 19, Vintage View Antiques, located at 354 Main Street, Denver, will offer antique photos and cameras, among other things. For the last 12 years, owner Jason Denlinger has been specializing in cameras and photography from the 1840s-1990s. The journey began when he bought his wife, Shannan, a photographer, her first antique camera. Seeing how much his wife enjoyed the camera and deciding to share his passion with the public, Denlinger started setting up outside Renningers Antique Market in Adamstown on Sundays. After developing relationships with regular customers, Jason opened a permanent

inside booth at Renninger’s, where he would stay for five years. Denlinger knew he would eventually want to make the jump into business ownership; however, the COVID-19 pandemic put

this dream on hold. Denlinger turned to the internet and started selling items online throughout the last few years, never forgetting about that ambition to have his own antique store.

Fast forward to 2023, Denlinger has become an expert in photographs, along with his 19-year-old son Devon, a recent graduate of Cocalico High School. Devon has been working alongside his dad since he was eight years old, helping out at the flea market and online sales. Denlinger is excited to offer photographs, cameras, and other ephemera and decorative antiques at Vintage View Antiques at the grand opening on Friday, January 19. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. They can be reached at 717-335-8508.

Yes, all that my parents Valued so highly, Is scattered in every direction. There is nothing more left here!

How much good fare did she prepare there, And how many miles did she walk? The dry sink and the wood box too, The butter churn and the chairs, The dishes from the cupboard, the beds, And the old coffee mill.

Many people like sales, They go just for fun. But to me a sale seems Like a bad and sad place.

The old wooden rocking chair, And playthings so familiar, These things all go to strangers. This seems a disgrace. It feels as though the lives Of my parents were for naught. With home all plucked apart, This hurts me surely.

*** In the middle of September, another envelope reached us from Gladys S. Martin, who resides on Glenwood Drive in Ephrata. We hadn’t heard from Gladys in many a moon, so we were most pleased to hear from her again. But an autumnal mood has occupied our poetess in DER VENDU. And we can appreciate her sadness. Sometimes sales are happy, social events; sometimes they are sad affairs. For Gladys, her sale was clearly the latter. We know that our MUDDERSCHPROOCH lends itself so well to levity and humor. But Gladys Martin demonstrates in this poem that it also lends itself well to more somber moods. Her first two lines are full of melancholy: “Heit is en schwatzer Daag fer mich, Ich wott ich breicht’s net sehne.” There follow lines like: “Mei Aage sin voll mit Draene,” “Oh, wie kann ich des schdende dann,” “Daer Vendu verbrecht mei Hatz,” “Un, oh, es dutt mir weh,” and “Awwer zu mir scheint en Vendu, Wie en iwwel un drauerich Blatz.” We are most pleased to be able to share DER VENDU this week with all the good readers of our ECK in the Shopping News! So we begin the month of December with a mighty salute with our new Schtrohhut, which must soon be winterized or replaced with something warmer. Hats off to Gladys S. Martin vun Effredaa!!! THIS WEEK’S

Biblical Message

“It’s not of works” Author: Wenger Scripture: John 1:12,13 - “But as many as received Him to them He gave the right to become the children of God even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

A friend of mine counseled young men going off to Vietnam; he knew some would not be returning. When he asked them if they were a Christian, the vast majority said yes. The second question he asked was, “what do you do to become one?” They all had one or more of the same answerers. These answers were: my parents are Christians, I got baptized/joined the church or I am a good person. These responses were so much the same, you would think they all read from the same script. He wanted to find one verse that would speak to all three of these false hopes. Our study verse, is that verse; it states we must receive Him/ believe in Him and that it’s

NOT by blood, born into a Christian family; NOT by the will of the flesh, being a good person; NOT by the will of man, joining a church/being baptized; but by God’s power. We do no one any favors by furthering a pretense of salvation when they trust in any of these false hopes. “But as many as received Him.” What does it mean to receive? The Greek word that is translated receive is lambánō. The root of the word means to “actively lay hold of, to take.” Remember, what was said of the Jewish nation about the coming their Messiah… “He came to his own and they received Him NOT.” (John 1:11)

Our verse does exchange the terms receive and believe, but it is not just a mental knowledge or belief about Him. The Bible says that the demons believe and they even take it one step further, they tremble. “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and they tremble.” (James 2:19) The demons know all about Christ, but they certainly aren’t saved. They know who He is, and they certainly believe in Him, but they don’t know Him. The missing element: The demons believe they know about Him, even their theology is correct, but the missing element is

repentance. Now granted, they are fallen angels and can’t repent, but the point I make is they believe. We must understand and personally believe that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) That all includes you. Just as John the Baptist’s ministry in the desert was one of Repentance before Christ came, so repentance must precede real salvation. Repentance is the handle that opens the door to salvation. If you do not believe that you sin and that your sin will keep you from heaven, then you have no need of salvation. Repentance is a 180-degree change of direction in thought and deed. If you don’t see your

sin, you won’t repent about it (change your mind). That was the mistake of the Pharisees and religious leaders in Christ’s time. They believed they were righteous. They thought they were good enough. You can be very religious, kind, studious, giving, attend Church every time the doors are open and be unsaved. That is why there will be more religious people in hell than any other kind. The religious unsaved is the largest group of people that inhabit the earth now and in all of history. You would think it would be atheists… nope! The Bible says, “There is none righteous no not one.” (Romans 3:1012) It also states that, “Our

righteousness is like filthy rags in His sight.”(Isaiah 64:6) Salvation is not of good works - “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy.” (Titus 3:5) Next week we will consider what salvation is not… Not by blood. You are not God’s child because you are born once. It’s not because your parents or grandparents are good Christians… you must be born again. It’s not by the will of the flesh… being good, or doing good deeds. It’s NOT by the will of man… following manmade rules, rites of passage and rituals. But as the verse declares it’s of God. To be continued next week.

If someone were to walk into the 8th grade class at some time throughout the day and hear someone making some sort of dad joke, the best guess is Marvin. Marvin Monterroso is an 8th grader here at Hinkletown Mennonite School and has been at HMS since 4th grade. Marvin is the son of Ana and Jose Monterroso. He also has an older brother named Luis. Although Marvin may come across as funny, talkative, and outgoing, he also thinks that it is really important to make connections with people and to be able to relate to them. For three or four years now, Marvin has become passionate about becoming a therapist when he grows up. He thinks that relating to people and understanding where they are coming from are some of the best qualities that a therapist can have, and those are thing’s he is already good at. His friend Eli agrees and says, “He’s always there and he makes people laugh and smile.” Someone who was a big inspiration to Marvin was Mrs. McCullough, the school guidance counselor. He looks up to her because she helps people in the same way he wants to someday. The way she connects with people and is able to talk to them is what Marvin hopes he can be like to other people someday. Marvin is either planning on going to Hinkletown’s Venture Program or a local public school for high school. From there Marvin would like to attend Yale Written by: University and then go straight into Ashlyn Kanagy pursuing his career as a therapist.
